gui.exe is not a single, standard Windows component. Different desktop and Store applications can use that filename, so deleting or replacing it blindly can remove the wrong program or install malware. The safe fix is to identify the exact file path, publisher, owning application and Windows version, scan it, then repair or reinstall that application using Windows or the publisher’s official package.
What gui.exe is—and why the name is not enough
An executable named gui.exe normally provides a graphical interface for some application, but the filename alone does not identify its owner. Two unrelated programs can use the same name. Windows therefore cannot tell you whether a particular copy is legitimate from the filename alone.

A known vendor path and a valid signature support an application-repair workflow. An unknown publisher, an unexpected startup entry or a copy under a user-download or temporary directory should be treated as a security question first. Microsoft distinguishes unknown software from confirmed malware and potentially unwanted applications; an unfamiliar name is not proof of infection, but it is a reason to verify before running or deleting the file.

Identify the exact gui.exe before changing anything
1. Capture the path from Task Manager
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - If necessary, select More details, then open the Details tab.
- Find
gui.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. - Copy the complete path, including the drive letter and every folder, before closing the window.
If the process is not running, look for the application that reports the error in Settings > Apps > Installed apps, the Start menu, or a shortcut’s Properties. The goal is to associate the filename with a specific installed package, not to guess from the name.
2. Check Properties and the signature
Right-click the file, choose Properties, and review the General, Details and Digital Signatures tabs. Confirm that the product and company names match the application you intended to install. On the signature tab, select the signer and use Details to verify that Windows reports a valid digital signature. A signature helps establish origin; it does not by itself prove that the program is appropriate for your computer.
3. Record the trigger
Write down what happened immediately before the message appeared: opening a particular application, signing in, installing an update, connecting a device, or starting Windows. Also note whether the message says that gui.exe stopped working, cannot be found, is blocked, or was detected as unwanted. These distinctions determine whether you should repair an app, restore a package, or investigate a security event.

Take a screenshot of the dialog and save the path, publisher, signature result and application name in a note. Do not rename the executable, move it to another folder or overwrite it while you are still identifying it. Those actions can make the original failure harder for a vendor or administrator to reproduce. If the file is associated with an application that stores local settings, record the application’s name and account before using Reset or uninstalling it.
Check for malware or a potentially unwanted application
Do this before downloading a replacement executable or adding an exception. A generic filename can be used by legitimate software and by unwanted software, and whitelisting it without checking removes an important safety control.
- Open Windows Security and go to Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection updates and choose Check for updates so Microsoft Defender has current security intelligence.
- Return to Scan options, select Full scan, and choose Scan now. Leave the computer on until the scan completes.
- If the detection or unwanted behavior persists, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save your work first; Windows restarts and scans outside the normal desktop environment.
- After threats are removed, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall the associated unwanted program. Remove only software you can identify; do not delete an isolated executable while its owner is unknown.
Microsoft treats unknown software as a separate risk category while its reputation is established. Therefore, a clean scan is useful evidence but is not a reason to assume every copy of gui.exe is safe. Keep the path, publisher and parent application in your notes if you need help from the vendor or an administrator.
If Defender names a specific threat, follow the action shown in Windows Security and allow the scan to finish. Do not restore the file from quarantine simply because an application stopped working. First verify the application’s publisher and obtain a fresh installer from an official source. If a work computer is managed by an organization, security policy may prevent you from changing the detection; contact the administrator rather than creating an exclusion.

Repair a known traditional desktop application
Once the path and publisher match an application you recognize, use the least destructive repair first. Repair preserves the installation where possible; Reset removes the application’s data and settings; uninstalling and reinstalling replaces the package.
- Restart Windows. A restart can clear a locked file or an incomplete update without changing application data.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application that owns
gui.exe, select its menu, choose Advanced options, and select Repair when that option is available. - Start the application and reproduce the original action. If it now opens, keep the repaired installation and avoid replacing individual files.
- If Repair did not help, return to the same page and choose Reset. Read the warning first: Reset can remove the application’s local data, preferences or sign-in state.
- If neither option is available or the error remains, uninstall the owning application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Download the current installer only from the publisher’s official site or install the application from Microsoft Store. Do not obtain a standalone
gui.exefrom a file-download page. - Restart Windows after reinstalling, then test the application before restoring optional plug-ins or copied configuration files.
Not every traditional desktop program exposes Repair or Reset in Windows. In that case, use the vendor’s current installer and its documented uninstall procedure. If uninstalling is blocked, note the exact message rather than deleting the program folder manually; a partially removed application can leave services, startup entries or registration data behind.
Repair is the best first choice when you want to preserve documents and preferences. Reset is appropriate only after you understand what local data will be removed and have backed up anything the application does not synchronize. Reinstalling is more disruptive, but it is the correct way to replace a damaged installation when Windows cannot repair it. None of these steps requires downloading a loose executable.
Repair a Microsoft Store or AppX package
Store applications are packaged differently from traditional desktop programs. Launch failures can result from an unregistered package, corrupted package files, permissions, or an AppLocker policy. Deleting files from the AppX repository manually can damage other applications, so use package-aware commands or reinstall through an official source.

Check whether the package is registered
Open PowerShell and query the current user’s packages. Replace the search text with a distinctive part of the application name:
Get-AppxPackage | Where-Object {$_.Name -like "*AppName*"} | Select Name, PackageFullName, InstallLocationConfirm that the returned name and installation location belong to the application that produced the gui.exe message. If nothing is returned, the package may be missing, installed for another user, or blocked by policy; do not guess a package name.
Re-register a package
For a package that exists but will not activate, re-register its manifest in PowerShell using the package name shown by the query:

If registration succeeds but the application’s configuration is damaged, reset the package:
Get-AppxPackage -Name <PackageName> | Reset-AppxPackageResetting can remove the app’s local settings and data. Open the application again and complete its sign-in or setup steps if Windows asks.
Reinstall from an official package source
When the package is corrupt or missing, use Microsoft Store. You can also use Windows Package Manager after confirming the result:

Policy restrictions cannot be safely bypassed by downloading another gui.exe.
Use the package commands only after identifying the owning application. A search term that is too broad can return several similarly named packages, and installing the wrong one can create a second, unrelated application. Compare the displayed publisher, package identity and installation location with the information recorded from Task Manager and File Explorer.

This comparison uses five decision points: confidence in the file’s identity, whether the app is desktop or Store-based, the symptom, how reversible the action is, and whether the source is official. A repair is more reversible than a reset, and a reset is more reversible than uninstalling an application whose data has not been backed up.
How to decide between similar actions
If the application is known and the error began after an update, restart and Repair are sensible first steps. If the app opens but behaves as though its preferences are damaged, Reset may help, provided you accept the loss of local settings. If the file is unknown or the alert comes from Defender, security scanning takes priority over application repair. If a package command returns an access or policy error, repeating the command with random options is unlikely to help; the administrator who controls the device must review the restriction.

Search results and pop-ups can imitate Windows support. A page that tells you to call a phone number, install remote-support software, or download a replacement gui.exe is not an official repair path. Microsoft states, “Microsoft’s error and warning messages never include a phone number.” Microsoft also advises, “Download apps only from trusted sources, such as Microsoft Store.”
- Do not call the number, install the suggested remote tool, or grant the caller control of the computer.
- Close the page or browser window. If it will not close normally, use Task Manager to end the browser process and reopen it without restoring the suspicious tab.
- Run the Defender update, Full scan and, if needed, Offline scan described above.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, remove software installed because of the message, after confirming what it is.
- If you supplied passwords or allowed remote access, change those passwords from a known-clean device and notify the relevant account or workplace administrator.
Do not publish or share a replacement executable as a universal solution. Because gui.exe is ambiguous, a file that fixes one vendor’s application can break another or conceal malicious code.
If gui.exe still will not start
Stop changing files and assemble a reproducible report. Include the complete path, publisher and signature status, owning application, Windows edition and version, exact error text, whether Defender detected anything, and which action failed (Repair, Reset, registration or reinstall). This information lets the application publisher distinguish a damaged installation from a package-registration, permissions or policy problem.
For a Store package, include the Get-AppxPackage result for the affected user and any PowerShell error text. For a traditional desktop app, include the installer version and whether the failure occurs for every Windows account or only one. An administrator may need to review permissions or AppLocker rules; those controls are intentionally outside a normal user’s repair steps.
Do not delete a system or application folder merely because its name contains gui.exe. Once the owner is identified, the official uninstall or reinstall process removes the correct files and registrations. If the owner cannot be established, leave the file in place while Defender and the appropriate administrator or vendor investigate it.

Is gui.exe a virus?
