Start by checking Rockstar’s live service status, then test your own connection, NAT type, platform ports and console or PC network settings. Error messages such as “Saving failed,” “Timed out locating session,” and “Rockstar Games Services are unavailable” can result from either a Rockstar outage or a problem between your device, router and internet provider, so changing router settings before checking status can waste time.
What GTA Online connection errors actually indicate
GTA Online uses Rockstar services plus peer and platform-network connections. A failure at any point can look similar on screen. Common messages include:

None of these messages identifies one certain cause by itself. Rockstar says an unavailable-services error can be caused by an outage in Rockstar’s servers or by an issue with your network. Use the sequence below to separate a service incident from a local connection problem instead of assuming that every disconnection is caused by your Wi-Fi or router.
1. Check Rockstar and platform service status first
Open Rockstar’s Service Status page while the error is occurring. Check GTA Online for your platform, and also check the relevant console network service if you play on PlayStation or Xbox. The status page is a live snapshot, not a historical guarantee: it was observed showing all GTA Online platforms operational at 8:06 PM UTC on October 12, 2026, but that observation does not establish the status at another time.

If an outage or maintenance is shown
- Wait for the service to recover before changing DNS, forwarding ports or resetting your router.
- Retry after the status page returns to operational.
- If the page says operational but the same error continues, proceed with the local checks below; “operational” does not prove that your particular route or account connection is healthy.

2. Confirm that your internet connection is usable
Before changing game settings, verify that the device is online. Load another website or online game, sign in to your platform account, and run the platform’s built-in network test. A failed test or widespread problems on other devices point to your home network or ISP rather than GTA Online alone.
Rockstar’s connection targets
Rockstar’s PC guide, updated May 2, 2024, and its Xbox Series X|S guide, updated September 18, 2025, give the following troubleshooting targets:

These are publisher-provided targets, not a population study or an independent performance guarantee. Latency, packet loss, congestion and short interruptions can disconnect you even when a speed test exceeds the figures. Conversely, a brief speed-test result below a target does not prove that GTA Online is the only problem.
Compare Wi-Fi with a wired test on PC
On a PC, run GTA Online once over your normal Wi-Fi and then, if possible, test with a wired Ethernet connection. Rockstar specifically suggests trying wired Ethernet when wireless remains troublesome in its Grand Theft Auto Online PC Connection Troubleshooting guide. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a promise that a cable will cure every disconnection:
- If the wired session is stable while Wi-Fi disconnects, investigate wireless signal strength, interference, channel congestion or distance from the router.
- If both connections fail in the same way, continue with NAT, service and ISP-path checks.
- If another device also loses internet access at the same time, record the time and contact your ISP if the pattern repeats.
An Ethernet cable is therefore an optional test item, not a required purchase. Borrow one or use an existing cable if possible before spending money.
3. Check NAT type and router restrictions
Network Address Translation (NAT) maps a device’s private address and port to public internet addressing. GTA Online needs inbound and outbound communication to find compatible sessions. Rockstar describes the practical limits this way in its Strict NAT Type Errors on PC article:

Labels and menus vary by router and platform. On PC, Rockstar recommends Open or Moderate NAT and lists enabling UPnP as one possible method. Sign in to your router’s administration page, locate its UPnP or NAT setting, and follow the router manufacturer’s instructions. Do not disable the router firewall broadly or add random forwarding rules: an unrelated port change can alter NAT behavior and reduce security.

How to use the result
- An Open or Moderate result narrows the investigation but does not rule out packet loss, DNS problems, an outage or ISP routing trouble.
- A Strict result gives you a concrete router configuration to investigate. Enable only the method supported by your router, then retest GTA Online.
- If the router is behind another router or an ISP gateway, double NAT can keep the console or PC Strict even after one device is configured. Ask the ISP which unit is performing NAT before changing advanced settings.
On consoles, view NAT status through the console’s own network settings and use the platform-specific Rockstar guide rather than applying PC instructions verbatim. A NAT label can change after a router reboot or network change, so record the result at the time of the failed session.
4. Use the ports for your own platform
Port requirements are platform-specific. Rockstar lists these GTA Online UDP ports in its PC and Xbox Series X|S guidance:

Forwarding a port is not automatically required on every home network. First check service status, connection quality and NAT. If you do configure forwarding, assign the rule to the correct console or PC local address and use only ports Rockstar lists for that platform. Rockstar warns that opening or forwarding other ports can inadvertently change NAT behavior.

Do not copy Xbox network ports into a PlayStation rule, and do not assume that a port-forwarding tutorial for another game applies to GTA Online. Router interfaces may ask for an external range, internal range, protocol and device address; use the terminology and values in Rockstar’s guide for your platform. If you cannot identify the correct device address, stop and consult the router documentation instead of forwarding traffic broadly.
5. Change DNS only after the basic checks
DNS translates service names into network addresses. A DNS change can help when name resolution through your ISP is failing, but it will not repair an outage, weak Wi-Fi signal or packet loss. Preserve your existing DNS values before editing them so you can restore the prior configuration.

Rockstar includes these examples in its PC and Xbox Series X|S troubleshooting guides. Enter them in your operating system or console network settings, reconnect to the network, and test GTA Online again. If the change makes no difference, restore the original DNS values rather than leaving an unhelpful configuration in place.
Change DNS on the device or console first so you can compare results without affecting every person and device in the home. If multiple devices need the same change, note the original router values and make one change at a time. A successful DNS test narrows the cause to name resolution; it does not prove that your upload speed, NAT or route is healthy.

6. Restart the router and isolate the network path
Perform a full router restart
- Close GTA Online and shut down the PC or console.
- Unplug the router’s power cable.
- Leave it unplugged for about 10 minutes, as Rockstar’s guides instruct.
- Reconnect power and wait until the router shows a normal internet connection.
- Restart the PC or console and test a new GTA Online session.
This clears a temporary router state; it does not upgrade your service or fix a continuing ISP outage. Avoid buying a new router as the default response. Consider replacement only after testing shows that the existing router is the consistent source of the problem or cannot provide the required NAT behavior.

Try a different internet connection on PC
For PC “Rockstar Games Services are unavailable” errors, Rockstar suggests testing another connection, such as a mobile hotspot. Keep the test brief and monitor data usage:
- If the hotspot works while your home connection fails, the home router, ISP DNS or ISP route is implicated.
- If both networks fail, a Rockstar or platform issue, PC configuration problem or account-specific issue remains possible.
- If the hotspot also disconnects, stop the test rather than consuming mobile data and continue with the platform and support checks.
A hotspot comparison is an isolation test, not a recommended permanent gaming connection. Cellular networks can have their own latency, data limits and NAT restrictions. Record whether the same error appears and approximately when, then return to the normal connection.
7. Follow the correct console cache procedure
Xbox Series X|S
Rockstar’s Xbox Series X|S procedure is platform-specific. First power the console down completely, unplug it for two minutes, reconnect power and start it again. The same guide also provides a separate method to clear the Alternate MAC Address through the console’s Network Settings. Follow the menu labels shown in Rockstar’s Xbox Series X|S guide, then restart when prompted and retest.

PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
Use the dedicated Rockstar procedures for PS5 and PS4. Their menus, network tests and cache instructions differ from Xbox Series X|S. Follow the article for the console generation you own, and do not substitute PC port or DNS steps unless that guide calls for them.
Match the symptom to the most useful test
Different messages can share a cause, but their timing still helps choose the next check. A failure immediately after selecting Online can point toward service availability, NAT or session discovery. A disconnect after several minutes can also involve an intermittent Wi-Fi signal, packet loss or an ISP route. “Saving failed” should not be treated as proof that your local save is damaged; first check service status and whether the connection dropped at that moment.
- “Timed out locating session” or “Failed to find a compatible GTA Online session”: check service status, NAT and the platform network test. If NAT is Strict, follow the router guidance before trying random ports.
- “Connection to the session lost due to an unknown network error”: compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet on PC, note whether other devices remain online, and test again after a router restart.
- “Rockstar Games Services are unavailable”: check Rockstar’s status page first, then test another connection on PC if the page reports operational service.
- “Saving failed”: note the exact time, avoid repeated router changes during an outage, and verify whether the game can reconnect after service recovery.
These interpretations are starting points, not diagnoses. The same message can be produced by a server incident or a local network fault, which is why each comparison matters.

Passing one test narrows the possibilities; it does not prove that every other component is healthy. For example, a successful speed test says little about NAT, and an Open NAT result does not rule out an intermittent ISP route.

Keep a short troubleshooting record
Write down the UTC time of each failure, the exact error text, platform and model, connection type, NAT result and whether other internet services worked. Record whether Ethernet, a router restart, DNS change, console power cycle or hotspot changed the outcome. This prevents repeating the same unsuccessful step and gives an ISP or Rockstar Support a usable timeline.
Change one variable at a time whenever possible. If you change DNS, router settings and ports together, you will not know which change affected the result and may make it harder to restore a secure configuration. Save existing DNS values and router settings before editing them, and never share router passwords or account credentials in a support request.
When to contact your ISP or Rockstar Support
Contact the ISP when
- Several devices lose internet access at the same time.
- A wired device and Wi-Fi device show the same repeated interruptions.
- A hotspot works consistently but the home connection cannot join or hold sessions.
- You see recurring packet loss, a modem fault or an outage in the ISP’s area.
Give the ISP dates and times, whether Ethernet changed the result, the NAT status, and whether another connection succeeded. Those details help distinguish a local Wi-Fi fault from an upstream routing issue.

- Rockstar’s status page is operational, your platform service is working, and the issue persists across more than one tested network.
- You followed the correct PC, Xbox, PS5 or PS4 procedure and still receive the same error.
- The problem appears tied to one account or Rockstar service behavior rather than every device on your network.
Include the exact on-screen error, platform and model, game mode, approximate UTC times, status-page result, NAT type, connection type, and which tests changed the outcome. Do not share passwords or expose router administration credentials.
A practical order for future troubleshooting
- Read the live Rockstar and platform status pages.
- Confirm that the device and other services are online.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet on PC when possible.
- Run the platform network test and record NAT type.
- Check only the ports and router options documented for your platform.
- Preserve current DNS settings, then test Rockstar’s documented DNS values if name resolution is suspected.
- Restart the router for about 10 minutes and retest.
- Try a different connection, such as a short mobile-hotspot test on PC.

It can contribute. Rockstar describes Open NAT as playable with any NAT type, Moderate as playable with Open or Moderate, and Strict as limited to Open. Check your platform’s NAT result and follow the platform-specific router or UPnP guidance rather than adding random port forwards.

Which GTA Online ports should I open?
Rockstar lists UDP 6672, 61455, 61456, 61457 and 61458 for GTA Online in its PC and Xbox Series X|S guidance. Xbox also has separate network ports, while PlayStation has its own list. Use only the guide for your platform; forwarding unrelated ports can change NAT behavior.
Will changing DNS fix frequent disconnections?
It may help with name-resolution problems, but it cannot fix a server outage, weak Wi-Fi, packet loss or an ISP route. Save your current settings first. Rockstar documents Google Public DNS examples: IPv4 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4; IPv6 2001:4860:4860::8888 and 2001:4860:4860::8844.
Should I buy a new router?
