Fixing a GTA 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2 crash starts with the exact game, timing, and error code—not with buying new hardware. Update the game, Rockstar Games Launcher, Windows, and graphics driver; verify the installed files; then apply the remedy documented for the specific message, such as switching Vulkan and DirectX 12 or lowering RDR2’s video-memory load.
Record the full error before changing settings. Rockstar’s official instructions are targeted troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that one change will solve every PC configuration.

Identify the crash before changing anything
Write down the details while the failure is visible. The same symptom—such as a game closing to the desktop—can have different causes, and Rockstar documents different fixes for different messages.

Take a screenshot of the complete dialog if possible. Do not substitute a similar-looking message for the one actually shown; an ERR_GFX_STATE fix is not a universal remedy for every crash.

Run the general fixes first
These steps address outdated software, incomplete updates, and damaged installation files before you make game-specific configuration changes.
- Connect the PC to the internet and let updates finish. For GTAV, Rockstar says the latest game patch must be allowed to apply. Do not launch while a game or launcher update is paused.
- Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver supplied for your graphics processor, then restart Windows. If a GTAV
ERR_GFX_STATEcrash began immediately after a driver update, Rockstar also documents trying an earlier driver rather than assuming the newest release is compatible with your installation. - Update Rockstar Games Launcher. Open the launcher, allow any pending launcher update, and restart it. RDR2’s general troubleshooting instructions specifically call for graphics-driver and Windows updates and for allowing launcher updates to apply.
- Update Windows. Install pending Windows updates and reboot. A partially installed system update can leave the game, driver, and launcher on incompatible components.
- Verify the game files. Use the Verify or Verify Integrity command in the storefront or launcher where the game is installed. The exact screen depends on whether you use Rockstar Games Launcher or another supported PC storefront. Verification replaces missing or altered files without requiring a full reinstall.
- Launch again with no other change. Test once after the update and verification cycle so you know whether the basic repair solved the problem before adding a settings change.
For GTAV Error Code 134, Rockstar states that an out-of-date game version can trigger the error and provides separate verification instructions for each launcher. Follow the launcher-specific procedure on the official Error Code 134 support page. Rockstar describes reinstalling as a later action if verification does not resolve the error, so do not start with a reinstall.
Choose a targeted fix from the exact error
After updates and file verification, use the branch that matches the message on screen. The following table is a selection guide; it is not a list of interchangeable fixes.

Fix RDR2 ERR_GFX_INIT
The full message is “Failed to initialize graphics device. Please reboot or reinstall latest drivers.” Rockstar’s procedure is specific to Red Dead Redemption 2 and this initialization error. Use the steps in order and keep a backup of any file you edit.
1. Update and restart
Install the latest graphics driver, restart Windows, and allow Rockstar Games Launcher to update. If the message remains, close both the game and launcher completely before touching the settings files.
2. Reset the settings files without deleting system.xml
Rockstar instructs you to reset the RDR2 settings files while preserving system.xml. The purpose is to remove corrupted or incompatible per-user settings while retaining the file that contains the graphics configuration you may need to edit. Do not delete or overwrite system.xml during this step.

3. Change the graphics API in system.xml
Open system.xml with a text editor and change the graphics API setting from Vulkan to DirectX 12, or from DirectX 12 to Vulkan, following Rockstar’s documented syntax. Save the file, then launch RDR2. Test one API at a time; changing several unrelated settings at once makes the result impossible to interpret.
4. Remove the sga_ files Rockstar identifies
Rockstar also directs players to remove existing files whose names begin with sga_. These are generated graphics-cache files. Delete only the files covered by the official procedure, not arbitrary files from the game directory. The complete sequence and file locations are in Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_INIT instructions.
If RDR2 still cannot initialize after the documented reset and API test, stop repeating the same changes and collect the diagnostic files in the support section below.
Fix RDR2 ERR_GFX_STATE
This message indicates a different graphics-state failure from ERR_GFX_INIT, so use its own procedure.
Test DirectX 12 instead of Vulkan
Rockstar recommends current graphics drivers and trying DirectX 12 when the game is using Vulkan. Change only the API, launch the game, and test the same activity that previously crashed. If DirectX 12 is already selected, the comparison test is Vulkan; return to the API that is stable on your system.

Rockstar also documents running the game as administrator while disabling Windows fullscreen optimizations. Apply both settings for the test, then launch from the normal game shortcut or launcher. This is a diagnostic test for the graphics-state error, not a reason to run every application permanently with elevated privileges.

Fix RDR2 ERR_GFX_D3D_DEFERRED_MEM
Rockstar says outdated graphics drivers usually cause this memory-related graphics error. Update the driver first rather than treating the message as proof that a graphics card has failed.
Confirm the minimum requirements
Compare your processor, graphics card, system memory, operating-system version, and available storage with RDR2’s published minimum requirements. If the PC is below a requirement, software changes may not provide a stable result. If it meets the requirements, continue with load reduction before considering hardware replacement.
Reduce graphics memory pressure
Lower the settings that consume graphics memory and restart the game. Rockstar specifically suggests beginning with the in-game Video Memory meter at about two-thirds of available video memory—approximately 66%. This is a settings recommendation for this error, not a measured crash-success rate or a guarantee that every PC will become stable at that value.
After lowering the load, test the same location or activity that produced the error. If the crash returns only when settings are raised, keep the lower configuration and report the exact meter position, resolution, API, and driver version to Support. - Update the graphics driver. Restart Windows after installation.
- Try an earlier driver if the newest one is already installed and the crash persists. This is a compatibility test for a regression, not a general recommendation to keep obsolete drivers indefinitely.
- Switch the graphics API. Rockstar recommends trying DirectX 12 instead of Vulkan. Change the API, launch, and reproduce the same scenario.
- Test administrator launch with fullscreen optimization disabled. Use this only as the documented troubleshooting test, then compare the result with a normal launch.

Fix GTAV D3DERR_DEVICELOST
Rockstar describes graphics-driver conflicts as a common cause of D3DERR_DEVICELOST. Install an updated driver or perform a clean installation of the graphics driver, then restart Windows and test GTAV again.
A clean driver installation removes the previous driver components before installing the selected version. Use the clean-install option supplied by your graphics-driver installer and follow its prompts. If the error began after a driver change, record both the failing and tested driver versions so Support can see the compatibility history. Error Code 134 can appear when the installed GTAV version is not up to date. First connect to the internet, allow the current patch to install, and verify the files through the launcher that owns the installation. Rockstar provides separate instructions for each supported launcher because the menu names and verification process differ.
Launch GTAV after verification. If the code remains, preserve the exact message and launcher name when contacting Support. Rockstar lists reinstalling as a later step after verification has failed; a full reinstall is slower and should not replace the update-and-verify process.
Clear the RDR2 launcher profile only when general troubleshooting calls for it
RDR2’s general troubleshooting page includes clearing local Rockstar Games Launcher profile details. This removes local profile information and requires you to sign in again. Rockstar says it does not delete your Rockstar account or saved games.
Use this reset when the launcher itself behaves incorrectly or when the general RDR2 procedure directs you to it—not as a substitute for an error-specific graphics fix. Before clearing anything, make sure you know the account credentials needed to sign in again and close the launcher fully.

Collect diagnostic files when the crash continues
When updates, verification, and the matching error procedure do not resolve the problem, send Rockstar a complete diagnostic package instead of repeating random settings changes.

- Exact error text or a screenshot. Include the complete code and wording, not a paraphrase such as “graphics crash.”
- DxDiag. Rockstar says this report shows system specifications, including hardware and driver information.
- MSInfo. Rockstar notes that its Windows Error Reporting information can help show what failed.
- Rockstar Games Launcher
launcher.log. Includeprelauncher.logas well if the launcher will not start. - Game
launcher.log, where applicable. Use the log associated with the affected installation. - A short reproduction description. State whether the crash occurs at launch, during loading, or in play; the API selected; the driver version; the storefront; and which documented steps you tested.

When not to buy hardware or repair software
The official troubleshooting pages reviewed do not recommend a particular graphics card, replacement component, or PC-repair utility as a general crash solution. A crash message alone does not establish that a component has failed or that the PC is below the requirements. First complete the relevant updates, file verification, driver/API tests, settings reduction, and diagnostics.
Consider hardware investigation only after the PC has been compared with the game’s requirements and software troubleshooting has produced evidence of a hardware-specific fault. A support ticket with DxDiag, MSInfo, logs, and the exact reproduction pattern is more useful than an unsupported upgrade.
