How to Fix GTA 5 Crashes, Launch Errors, and Stuttering on PC

Fix GTA 5 on PC methodically: identify whether you have Enhanced or Legacy, note the launcher and exact error, check the matching requirements, update the game and graphics driver, verify the installation, then apply the error-specific repair. For ERR_GFX_STATE or D3DERR_DEVICELOST, graphics-driver and graphics-API changes are the priority; for error code 134, updating or verifying the game files comes first. If the problem remains, isolate overlays and security conflicts and send Rockstar complete diagnostic files rather than reinstalling repeatedly.

Start by identifying the failure

“GTA 5 keeps crashing” describes several different failures. A crash before the main menu points toward installation, launcher, entitlement, driver or prerequisite problems. A crash after loading into Story Mode or Online is more likely to involve the graphics API, driver, memory pressure, conflicting software or a damaged file. Stuttering without a desktop crash is usually a performance or resource problem, but it can also appear when the computer is below the edition’s requirements.

Write down four details before changing anything:

• Whether the installation is Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced or Grand Theft Auto V Legacy.
• Whether you start it through Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam or Epic Games Store.

• The exact error code or text, including punctuation. Take a screenshot if possible.

Those details determine which instructions apply. Do not combine Enhanced and Legacy requirements, and do not assume a fix for a graphics error will solve a game-file or launcher error.

Check the correct PC requirements

Rockstar’s PC requirements page, last updated December 10, 2025, lists separate baselines for the two editions. The minimum row is a compatibility floor, not a promise of a particular frame rate or stutter-free play. Rockstar also warns that downloadable content and programming changes can alter requirements over time.

Check the free space in addition to the capacity shown in the table. An installation or update needs room for the game, extracted files and prerequisite data. Rockstar says an “Installation failed” message is usually associated with insufficient disk space for those items; that installation guidance does not establish that low free space causes every crash or stutter.

If your PC is below the matching minimum, software troubleshooting cannot turn it into a supported configuration. If it meets the minimum but not the recommended tier, use the checks below to separate an unsupported workload from a damaged installation or a conflict.

Use this diagnostic sequence before reinstalling

1. Install the current game update. Open the launcher that owns the installation and allow pending GTA V, Rockstar Games Launcher and prerequisite updates to finish. A version mismatch can produce launch failures even when Windows and the driver are current.
2. Update the graphics driver. Use the driver package for your GPU from its manufacturer. Restart Windows after installation. If a graphics error began immediately after a driver update, Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_STATE guidance permits trying an earlier driver version rather than assuming the newest package is always the answer.
3. Verify the game files. Use the launcher’s game-management menu and choose its Verify, Verify integrity or equivalent command. In Steam, open Library, right-click GTA V, choose Properties, open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files. In Epic Games Store, open Library, use the three-dot menu for GTA V, choose Manage and select Verify. In Rockstar Games Launcher, open the installed-games management view and use its Verify/Verify Integrity command; wording can vary with launcher revisions.
4. Confirm the prerequisites. Check that the Windows edition, DirectX components and Microsoft Visual C++ components required by the game are present and functioning. Also compare the PC with the correct Enhanced or Legacy row above.
5. Remove temporary conflicts. Close overlays, recording or game-sharing utilities and other software that injects into or communicates with the game. Check whether security software or a firewall is blocking the launcher or game. For a short diagnostic test, pause only the relevant protection under your normal security policy, restore it immediately afterward, and never leave the PC unprotected as a permanent “fix.”
6. Test the installation location. Rockstar recommends an internally connected drive for optimal data speed rather than an external drive. If the game is on an external device, test it from an internal drive with enough free space. Move or reinstall only after verification and the simpler checks have been tried.

Keep a note of each change and its result. If a driver update, API switch or overlay change makes no difference, undo it before trying the next variable; otherwise several simultaneous changes make the cause impossible to identify.

1. Update the GPU driver. If the error persists on a current driver, test an earlier driver version supplied by the GPU manufacturer.
2. In GTA V, open Settings > Graphics > Advanced Settings. Change the Graphics API from Vulkan to DirectX 12, save the setting, and return to the menu as Rockstar directs. Restart the game and test the same activity that produced the error.
3. If the error continues, locate GTAV.exe in the game’s installation folder. Open its Properties, select the Compatibility tab, enable Run this program as an administrator and Disable fullscreen optimizations, apply the changes and launch through the normal launcher. Rockstar provides launcher-specific paths for the Rockstar, Steam and Epic versions; use the executable belonging to your installed edition, not a copied file from another installation.

Do not treat the API switch as a universal performance upgrade. Vulkan and DirectX 12 can behave differently on different driver versions and hardware; the purpose here is to test whether one graphics path avoids the error.

D3DERR_DEVICELOST

Rockstar describes D3DERR_DEVICELOST as usually involving a graphics-driver problem or a conflict involving DirectX 3D and the display driver. Start with the driver rather than changing many game settings at once.

• Install the current driver for the GPU and restart Windows.
• If a normal update does not help, perform a clean installation using the GPU manufacturer’s driver installer and its clean-install option, following that vendor’s instructions.
• Disconnect or close software that places an overlay, recorder or sharing layer over the game, then test again.
• If the error began after a driver update, test the previous stable driver version, as Rockstar’s graphics-error guidance allows.

A clean driver installation is different from reinstalling GTA V: it replaces the display software while leaving the game files in place.

Error code 134

Rockstar associates code 134 with a game version that has not been updated. First allow the launcher to update GTA V, then verify the installation using the launcher that owns it.

1. Close GTA V and let the launcher finish every queued update.
2. Run the launcher’s Verify/Verify Integrity command. This compares installed files with the expected version and replaces damaged or missing data.
3. Start the game again. If verification does not resolve code 134, Rockstar’s article describes reinstalling the Steam or Epic version. Use the launcher’s uninstall and reinstall workflow so ownership and prerequisites are registered again.

Do not delete random folders from the installation to “force” an update. That can turn a repairable verification problem into a full download.

When GTA 5 will not launch at all

The launcher opens, but the game closes immediately

Confirm the edition and launcher, install pending updates, verify the files and check the graphics driver. Then close overlays and recording tools and test again. If you enabled administrator execution or compatibility settings for a previous test, apply them to the actual GTAV.exe used by that launcher; applying them to a shortcut for another copy will not change the active installation.

The launcher itself will not start

Check security software and firewall events for a blocked Rockstar process, then retry after restoring any legitimate exception required by your security product. If Rockstar Games Launcher will not start, collect prelauncher.log in addition to the normal launcher log before contacting support. A launcher failure is not evidence that GTA V’s graphics settings are corrupt, so changing the in-game API is not the first step in this branch.

The game shows “Installation failed”

Free space must cover the installed game plus extraction and prerequisite files. Check the destination drive, remove enough unrelated data, and retry the installer. If the destination is external, test an internally connected drive when possible. Once installation completes, run file verification before attempting graphics changes.

The game reaches the menu but fails when entering Story Mode or Online

Record whether both modes fail. Verify files, update the driver and test with overlays and recording software closed. A failure limited to one mode should be reported with that exact mode and the complete error text; do not describe it only as “GTA crashes.”

Reduce stuttering without guessing at a cure

Stuttering can mean brief frame-time spikes, repeated pauses while data streams, or a system that is continually short of memory or graphics capacity. Rockstar’s general PC advice treats the following as checks, not proof that one item causes every stutter.

Establish a reproducible test

Choose one repeatable scene or activity and note whether the problem occurs in the menu, Story Mode, Online or everywhere. Test after a clean restart of Windows with overlays and recorders closed. If the hitching disappears, re-enable those programs one at a time to identify the conflict rather than permanently disabling unrelated software.

Match settings to the edition and hardware

Compare your GPU memory and system RAM with the matching requirements row. Enhanced lists 8 GB RAM and a 4 GB graphics card as minimums, while its recommended configuration rises to 16 GB dual-channel memory and an 8 GB graphics card. Legacy’s listed minimum is 4 GB RAM and its recommendation is 8 GB. These figures are not frame-rate benchmarks, but running close to a minimum can leave less headroom for background processes.

As a reversible test, lower demanding graphics options and use the game’s Safe Mode if it offers that choice. Restart and repeat the same scene. If the stutter is unchanged, restore settings before trying another cause; lowering quality is not a confirmed GTA V-specific cure for every hitch.

Check storage and background load

Keep adequate free space on the game drive and, where practical, use an internal drive. Close applications that consume memory or continuously record the screen. Check security scans and scheduled tasks that coincide with the pauses. These tests address resource contention without claiming that any particular background program is responsible on every PC.

Test the graphics API only when appropriate

If stuttering accompanies ERR_GFX_STATE or another graphics error, test the Vulkan-to-DirectX 12 change described above. If there is no graphics error, change one setting at a time and measure the same scene; an API change made without a reproducible comparison can make performance harder to evaluate.

Launcher-specific verification and reinstall decisions

Verification is normally the lower-risk operation because it replaces mismatched files without discarding the entire installation. Reinstalling is appropriate when verification cannot complete, code 134 persists after verification, or the launcher reports a damaged installation. It is not a substitute for checking free space, drivers or conflicts.

Collect the right evidence before contacting Rockstar

If the ordered checks do not resolve the problem, send support enough information to reproduce and classify it. Rockstar asks for system reports, launcher logs and the exact error.

1. Run dxdiag from the Windows search box or Run dialog. Select Save All Information and keep the resulting text file.
2. Run msinfo32. Use the System Information window’s export or save command to create the requested MSInfo report.
3. Collect the relevant launcher.log. Rockstar’s diagnostic instructions identify the default log locations under DocumentsRockstar Games. If Rockstar Games Launcher does not start, include prelauncher.log as well.
4. Attach a screenshot or exact transcription of the error, including the code, and state whether the installation is Enhanced or Legacy and whether it is managed by Rockstar, Steam or Epic.
5. List what you tested: driver version and whether it was a clean install, file verification result, graphics API, overlay status, storage location and whether the failure occurs in Story Mode, Online or both.

Keep the reports from the same failed session when possible. A DXDiag captured after a driver change may not describe the environment that produced the original crash.

Common mistakes that waste time

• Mixing edition requirements: Enhanced’s 105 GB SSD and Legacy’s 125 GB HDD figures are not interchangeable.
• Changing everything simultaneously: API, driver, graphics settings and overlays should be tested in a controlled order.
• Reinstalling before verifying: verification can repair damaged files with less downtime.
• Assuming minimum specs guarantee smooth play: Rockstar presents them as requirements, not performance measurements.
• Leaving security protection disabled: any security or firewall change should be a temporary diagnostic test followed by restoration.
• Reporting only “it crashes”: the edition, launcher, timing and exact code determine which support path applies.

The most efficient path is therefore narrow and evidence-based: match the edition, patch and verify, address the specific graphics or version error, isolate reversible conflicts, and escalate with complete diagnostics when the issue remains.
