Start by identifying the return form, tax period, and filing status. A draft GSTR-1 error is handled differently from a mismatch after filing, and a GSTR-1A correction is available only before filing GSTR-3B for the same period. Use the matching route below, then verify the corrected figures in the portal.
First identify the error and return status
Note the form and period involved, whether the return is still a draft or already filed, and the exact portal message. Also distinguish an upload or validation error from a difference between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, an input tax credit (ITC) mismatch, or an error in how credit was used. If you uploaded data, check whether the portal generated an error report; it can point to the records that need attention.

Do not assume a portal warning proves the underlying tax treatment is right or wrong. Reconcile the return against the relevant invoices, supply records, liabilities, and ledgers before changing figures.
Fix a GSTR-1 error before filing
When GSTR-1 is still a draft, correct the source invoice or supply details and review the affected table. GSTN says uploaded draft invoice details can be edited or deleted before filing. After correcting the data, regenerate the return summary and review any validation messages or upload error report.
#1 Best Overall
- Open the relevant GSTR-1 period and locate the affected invoice or table.
- Correct or remove the incorrect draft record, or resolve the reported upload or table validation issue.
- Regenerate the summary and compare its totals with the source records before filing.
GSTN’s guidance describes table-total validation warnings and issues that can prevent summary generation. Follow the portal’s reported error rather than relying on a generic workaround. GSTN GSTR-1 and GSTR-1A guidance and GSTN guide to creating GSTR-1 explain these workflows.
Correct a filed GSTR-1 before filing that period’s GSTR-3B
If GSTR-1 is filed but GSTR-3B for the same period is not, check whether GSTR-1A is available. GSTN describes it as an optional, one-time facility to amend a record or add a missed record for that same tax period. It becomes available after GSTR-1 is filed or its due date has passed, whichever is later, and must be used before the period’s GSTR-3B is filed.
Changes made through GSTR-1A auto-populate into that period’s GSTR-3B. Review the updated figures before filing GSTR-3B; GSTR-1A is not a general route for changing a period after its GSTR-3B has been filed.

Tell the recipient when ITC timing matters
GSTN says ITC for supplies added or amended through GSTR-1A appears in the recipient’s GSTR-2B for the next tax period, not the current one. Tell the recipient what was corrected and which period’s GSTR-1A was used so they can account for the timing appropriately. See GSTN’s GSTR-1 and GSTR-1A guidance.

Check the amendment cut-off for an older GSTR-1
GSTN’s GSTR-1 FAQ states that errors or omissions relating to a previous financial year cannot be rectified after 30 November of the following financial year. This is a procedural cut-off tied to the relevant financial year, not a general promise that every amendment will be available until that date. Confirm the applicable law, tax period, and portal availability before acting on an older return. GSTN’s GSTR-1 guidance contains the relevant FAQ.
Respond to an ITC mismatch intimation in DRC-01C
For a DRC-01C mismatch, use the GST Portal’s Services > Returns > ReturnCompliance > ITC Mismatch DRC-01C path. GSTN’s instructions say the intimation and response cadence follows the taxpayer’s GSTR-3B frequency—monthly or quarterly. Read the intimation for the relevant period and respond using the portal workflow.
If the portal rejects a DRC-03 acknowledgement reference number (ARN), check each of these points before trying again:
- The DRC-03 belongs to the same GSTIN as the DRC-01C intimation.
- It relates to the same tax period.
- It was filed on or after DRC-01C Part A.
- The cause of payment is the specified option, “Liability mismatch – GSTR-1 to GSTR-3B.”
GSTN lists “Please provide valid ARN of DRC-03” as an example error message. Verify the ARN and its associated details rather than submitting an unrelated payment reference. Consult the GSTN DRC-01C instructions for the current response process.

Resolve an ITC cross-utilization error against the ledgers
An invalid cross-utilization error means credit is not being used according to the portal’s utilization rules. Check the relevant liability and electronic credit ledger, then compare the proposed utilization with GSTN’s published principles. The correct adjustment depends on the taxpayer’s actual balances and liabilities, so do not move credits based on a generic formula or workaround. GSTN’s known-issues and suggested-solutions document points to its ITC utilization principles.
Choose the correction route by filing status
| Situation | Route to check | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
| GSTR-1 is still a draft | Correct the source record or table, then regenerate and verify the summary. | Draft invoice details can be edited or deleted before filing, according to GSTN. |
| GSTR-1 is filed, but same-period GSTR-3B is not | Check GSTR-1A for the same period. | Optional, one-time use; availability depends on GSTR-1 filing or due date, and it must precede that period’s GSTR-3B. |
| Previous-financial-year GSTR-1 error | Check the applicable amendment cut-off and current portal availability. | GSTN’s FAQ states 30 November of the following financial year as the cut-off for rectifying prior-year errors or omissions. |
| ITC mismatch intimation | Open ITC Mismatch DRC-01C under Services > Returns > ReturnCompliance. | Check GSTIN, period, DRC-03 ARN timing, and specified cause of payment. |
| ITC cross-utilization error | Reconcile the actual ledgers and liabilities against GSTN utilization rules. | The right correction depends on the taxpayer’s balances and liabilities. |
Verify the correction before filing or replying
- Confirm the GSTIN, return form, and tax period are the intended ones.
- Compare the corrected figures with the source invoices, supply records, and relevant ledger balances.
- Review the portal-generated summary and any upload error report after making changes.
- For GSTR-1A changes, check the same-period GSTR-3B before filing and communicate the next-period GSTR-2B timing to the recipient where relevant.
- For DRC-01C, verify that the response and any DRC-03 ARN meet the intimation’s GSTIN, period, timing, and cause requirements.
GSTN provides portal entry, an offline return tool, and third-party ASP/GSP preparation routes for return preparation. These can help organize recurring data, but they do not resolve an incorrect source record or determine the right tax treatment. For a nil GSTR-3B question, consult GSTN’s separate GSTR-3B nil-return instructions.
