What error 0x80070002 means
The documented hexadecimal code is 0x80070002: the 0x prefix is followed by eight hexadecimal digits. The longer form 0X080070002 contains an extra zero and is usually a transcription or search error. Windows defines 0x80070002 as ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND. In this situation, a Store transaction, app package, or servicing operation is looking for a file that is missing, damaged, or no longer registered.

The code does not identify one single Groove Music defect. It can appear while the app is launching, while the Microsoft Store is downloading or updating the app, or while Windows Update is installing a component. The repair that works depends on which of those operations failed.

Step-by-step fixes for Groove Music or Media Player
1. Restart Windows
Save your work and choose Start > Power > Restart. A restart clears a pending installer state and reloads services that may have released or failed to locate the package file. After Windows starts, try the same action once: launch Groove Music/Media Player or repeat the Store download. If the code returns, continue rather than repeatedly restarting.
2. Install pending Windows and Microsoft Store updates
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update (on Windows 10, this is under Update & Security > Windows Update).
- Select Check for updates. Install all offered updates and restart if Windows requests it.
- Open Microsoft Store, select Library, and choose Get updates. Let Store finish updating its components and apps.
- Retry Groove Music/Media Player from the Start menu or Store.
An app package can fail when the operating system or Store services are at an older revision than the package being requested. Completing both update locations removes that mismatch before you make destructive changes.
3. Clear the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
wsreset.exeand select OK. - A blank command window appears while the cache is cleared. Microsoft notes that it can remain blank for about ten seconds.
- Wait for the window to close and for Microsoft Store to open automatically, then try the Groove Music/Media Player operation again.
This procedure targets Store cache data rather than your music files. It is useful when the Store cannot complete a download or reports that a package file cannot be found. If the command window remains indefinitely, close it, restart Windows once, and run the command again.

4. Repair the app without deleting its data
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On some Windows versions the page is labeled Apps & features.
- Search for Groove Music, Media Player, or the exact app name shown in the Store.
- Select the app’s three-dot menu (or open its entry), choose Advanced options, and select Repair.
- When Windows reports that the operation is complete, launch the app again.
Repair refreshes the installation while retaining the app’s local data. It is the appropriate first app-level operation when the program will not launch but you want to preserve preferences and sign-in information.
5. Reset the app only after Repair fails
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features).
- Open the Groove Music/Media Player entry, choose Advanced options, and select Reset.
- Confirm the warning and wait for Windows to finish.
- Open the app and sign in or configure it again if prompted.
Reset reinstalls the app package in place, but it permanently deletes that app’s data, preferences, and sign-in details. It does not erase ordinary files in your Music folder, but any settings stored inside the app must be recreated. Do not use Reset merely to test a theory if preserving those settings matters.
6. Reinstall from Microsoft Store Library
- Open Microsoft Store > Library.
- Find Groove Music or Media Player in the list of owned or installed apps. Use the Library search if it is not visible immediately.
- Select Install, Get, or the available reinstall control, and wait for the package to finish downloading.
- Launch the newly installed app and test playback or the operation that originally produced 0x80070002.
Reinstalling replaces the package after Repair and Reset have failed. Because the app identity may have changed, look for Media Player if Groove Music is no longer listed under its former name.

When 0x80070002 appears in Windows Update
If the message is shown by Windows Update rather than by Groove Music or Microsoft Store, treat it as a servicing failure. Microsoft lists 0x80070002 among Windows Update installation failures involving missing or corrupt files.

- Open the Windows Update page in Settings and run the available Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Allow the troubleshooter to apply its recommended corrections, then restart Windows.
- Return to Windows Update and try the installation again.
- If it still fails, use the administrator-level Windows Update recovery procedure to reset the Windows Update cache and the related update services. A service or cache reset can require an administrator account; close Store and other installers before starting it.
Do not keep resetting the Groove Music app when the failing operation is an operating-system update. The app repair affects only the app package, while the Windows Update path addresses the servicing files and services that generated the code.

Do not remove Microsoft Store as a workaround
Uninstalling Microsoft Store is not a supported repair tactic. Microsoft says removing or reinstalling the Store is unsupported; if the Store has already been removed, the supported recovery route is an operating-system reset or reinstall. See Microsoft’s guidance on removing, uninstalling, or reinstalling Microsoft Store before taking any such step.

Do not confuse a package problem with missing music files
ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND in this context refers to a file or component Windows needs for the transaction. It does not, by itself, prove that songs in your personal library have been deleted. Check the app package and Store state first; avoid deleting library folders as an attempted fix.
Windows version and support considerations
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Older Windows 10 installations may therefore have different update availability and support expectations than Windows 11 systems. The Settings labels can also vary by release: use Installed apps when present and Apps & features on older builds. The underlying sequence—update, clear Store cache, Repair, Reset, then reinstall—remains the same.

How to confirm the repair worked
- Start Groove Music or Media Player without the error dialog.
- If the Store was involved, confirm the app shows as installed in Library and that no download remains pending.
- Play a local track or perform the action that previously failed.
- If you used Reset or reinstall, verify that your preferences and sign-in state are restored manually.
- If Windows Update was the source, check its history for a successful installation rather than relying only on the absence of the Groove Music message.
If the same code returns after every step, note exactly where it appears—app launch, Store download, or Windows Update—and use only the matching branch above. That distinction determines whether the missing component belongs to the app package, Store cache, or Windows servicing stack.
