How to Fix GPU Overheating, Crashes, and Artifacts After Overclocking

First, disable the overclock and restore the graphics card’s factory settings. Then check cooling, dust, case airflow, drivers, monitoring utilities, power connections, and hardware in that order. Overheating, visual artifacts, crashes, hangs, TDRs, BSODs, and WHEA hardware-error events are symptoms with several possible causes; none proves that the GPU is permanently damaged.

Do not apply a universal “safe” temperature number. Thermal limits and sensor readings differ by graphics-card model, firmware, workload, and the sensor being reported. Use the exact card manufacturer’s documentation to interpret temperatures, fan behavior, and warning limits.

What to do immediately

If the problem began after changing core clock, memory clock, voltage, power limit, or a custom fan curve, stop tuning before doing anything else. Continuing to run an unstable profile can make every later test ambiguous.

  1. Return the GPU to stock settings. Disable custom core and memory values and restore the vendor defaults. If the tuning program will not stay open or Windows is unstable, use the card maker’s documented reset method or boot into Windows recovery or Safe Mode so the profile can be removed.
  2. Shut down and inspect cooling. Confirm that the GPU fans, case fans, and CPU cooler operate normally. Look for dust mats, blocked intake or exhaust vents, loose shrouds, and cables touching fan blades.
  3. Test at stock settings. Reproduce the workload that caused the fault, then try a light desktop workload. Record whether the symptom appears only under sustained load or also at idle.
  4. Isolate software. Check graphics-driver and game or application updates and their release notes. Temporarily close or uninstall third-party overclocking, monitoring, overlay, and fan-control utilities while testing.
  5. Check connections and hardware. Reseat the card in the primary PCIe slot, verify that each required power connector is fully inserted, and use independent power-supply cables where the card requires them. Follow the PC and card manuals before moving hardware.

Change one variable at a time and keep a short log of the setting, workload, temperature reading, and result. That turns a frustrating crash loop into a diagnosis.

Recognize what the symptom can—and cannot—tell you

Artifacts are incorrect pixels, flashing polygons, checkerboards, colored blocks, or texture corruption. A driver timeout may appear as a brief black screen followed by recovery (a TDR). A full application exit, system hang, BSOD, reboot, or a WHEA hardware-error event indicates instability but does not identify its source. AMD’s stability guidance lists unstable overclocking and overheating alongside outdated or misconfigured BIOS settings, unsupported or faulty hardware, and operating-system or driver problems.

Observed behavior Useful distinction Next check
Artifacts only during a demanding 3D load Often related to load, memory stability, heat, power delivery, or an application-specific problem; the pattern is not a diagnosis. Return to stock, watch cooling, and test a second 3D application.
Artifacts on the desktop, during boot, or in firmware Because the operating system and driver are not yet involved in every stage, persistent corruption raises concern about a physical or connection fault. Power off, inspect seating and connectors, and arrange professional inspection if it remains at stock.
Driver recovery, a TDR, or a game crash Can result from an unstable clock, overheating, driver conflict, application bug, or power interruption. Use a clean driver installation and remove monitoring or overlay utilities during isolation.
Instant reboot or BSOD under load May involve GPU tuning, power delivery, BIOS, memory, or another component rather than the GPU core alone. Check WHEA records, power connections, BIOS configuration, and the rest of the system at stock.
Failure at idle or in light applications Weakens a simple “the card is too hot under load” explanation and points toward driver, software, power-state, or hardware investigation. Compare a clean driver state with the stock profile and inspect hardware.

Step 1: restore factory tuning

Use the tuning utility’s reset control

Open the utility that applied the overclock and choose its explicit default, reset, or restore-factory option. Disable automatic startup of the profile so it cannot be re-applied at the next boot. Reset core and memory clocks, voltage offsets, power limits, fan curves, and any automatic “boost” or undervolt profile you changed. Save the default profile only after confirming that the application shows vendor values.

Some utilities can apply settings before the desktop appears. If Windows crashes during startup, enter Windows Recovery, choose Safe Mode, and remove or disable the utility’s startup task. The exact path varies by Windows edition and utility, so follow the graphics-card maker’s reset instructions rather than deleting random files from the driver folder.

AMD Adrenalin and Radeon WattMan behavior

AMD’s Adrenalin tuning controls include a stress-test feature, and the controls shown can vary by GPU. AMD states that a stress-test crash or reboot resets GPU tuning to defaults. Radeon WattMan guidance likewise advises returning to the last stable settings after instability. Treat that reset as a recovery aid, not proof that the hardware is healthy: a driver conflict, cooling fault, or power problem can still cause the next crash.

Confirm the reset before testing

Restart the computer, reopen the tuning panel, and verify that no custom values or profile icons are active. Do not combine this test with a new driver, BIOS update, fan curve, or game patch. A clean baseline is valuable only when you know what changed.

Step 2: inspect cooling, dust, and airflow

Check fans and airflow path

With the system powered off and unplugged, inspect the GPU intake, heatsink fins, and exhaust area. Dust between the fins can restrict airflow even when the visible fan blades look clean. Check that every GPU fan can turn freely and that no cable touches a blade. After powering on, verify that the fans behave as the card’s documentation describes; some cards stop their fans at low temperature, so a stationary fan at the desktop is not automatically a failure.

Inspect the case’s front, bottom, and side intakes and its rear or top exhaust. Remove temporary obstructions such as a filter packed with dust or a panel pressed against a wall. A graphics card can recirculate its own hot exhaust in a cramped case, so compare the behavior with the case positioned as the manufacturer recommends. Do not run without panels for long periods as a substitute for fixing airflow; use that only as a short diagnostic comparison.

Clean safely

Follow the card and case manufacturers’ cleaning instructions. An electric air duster can remove loose dust, but it cannot repair an unstable tuning profile, failed fan, driver issue, or damaged component. Hold fans so they do not spin freely while blowing air, use short bursts, and prevent condensed moisture or debris from being driven deeper into the heatsink. Do not open a cooler, remove a heatsink, or replace thermal material unless the manufacturer’s service guidance permits it and you understand the warranty and electrical risks.

Interpret temperature readings correctly

Record the sensor name shown by the monitoring software, the workload, and the time at which the reading was taken. “GPU temperature,” hotspot or junction temperature, memory temperature, and VRM readings are different measurements. Their limits are model-specific, and software may label them differently. Compare each value with the exact card documentation instead of borrowing a cutoff from another GPU generation.

Temperature alone also needs context. A brief peak followed by normal behavior is different from a sustained rise accompanied by fan failure, clock drops, artifacts, or a shutdown. If the card overheats at stock settings after dust removal and unobstructed airflow, stop repeated stress tests and arrange qualified inspection.

From electronics to car care and outdoor life, it's an all-in-one solution.

Step 3: isolate drivers and software

Check updates and release notes

Once stock settings and cooling are confirmed, check the graphics driver, operating-system updates, and the affected application. Read release notes for known crashes, TDRs, visual corruption, or compatibility changes affecting your GPU generation and application. If the fault began immediately after an update, note that timing rather than assuming the update is responsible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Perform a clean driver installation

Use the graphics driver installer’s clean-install option when available, or follow the vendor’s documented removal and reinstall procedure. Disconnecting from the internet temporarily can prevent Windows from installing a different driver during the process. Reboot when instructed, install only the driver components needed for testing, and leave optional overlays or recording modules disabled until stability is established.

Try a known-good driver when appropriate

AMD identifies reverting to a previously working driver as a possible step when a current driver problem has no fix. Choose a version that was actually stable on your system, obtain it from the official driver channel, and record the version so you can reverse the change. Do not switch drivers repeatedly without recording results; that obscures whether the profile, application, or hardware changed.

Remove conflicts

Temporarily disable third-party performance monitors, overclocking tools, RGB controllers, overlays, frame-rate limiters, capture software, and aggressive fan-control programs. Test with one monitor if possible and close browser tabs or background workloads that use hardware acceleration. If the crash disappears, re-enable programs one at a time until the conflicting component is identified. Keep the GPU at stock while doing this.

Use Windows evidence without overinterpreting it

Event Viewer can show display-driver recoveries and WHEA hardware-error events, while Reliability Monitor provides a time line of application failures, driver failures, and unexpected shutdowns. Capture the event time, code, and module name. These records help correlate a fault with a driver or device, but an event label by itself does not prove that the GPU is defective.

Step 4: verify power, slot, BIOS, and hardware

Check the PCIe slot and power leads

Shut down, switch off the power supply, unplug the system, and discharge residual power according to the PC manual. Confirm that the graphics card is fully seated in the primary PCIe slot and secured to the case. Verify every required connector clicks into place. Where the card’s instructions call for it, run separate cables from the power supply rather than using one daisy-chained lead. Never force a connector or mix modular power-supply cables from different power-supply families.

Review BIOS and system configuration

AMD lists outdated or misconfigured BIOS settings among possible stability causes. Check the motherboard and GPU documentation for supported BIOS versions and PCIe settings before changing anything. Avoid combining a BIOS update with several other fixes; if an update is necessary, record the previous version and follow the board maker’s recovery procedure. Revert experimental CPU, memory, or bus overclocks as well, because a GPU crash can originate elsewhere in an overclocked system.

Reduce the system to essentials

Disconnect nonessential USB devices, add-in cards, and accessories during diagnosis. Test with one display cable and one monitor, then reconnect equipment one item at a time. This follows AMD’s recommendation to remove nonessential accessories while isolating unsupported or faulty hardware. Do not remove components whose absence would prevent the system from booting or cooling safely.

When to stop hands-on checks

Stop if you smell burning, see discoloration, hear electrical arcing, find a damaged connector, or cannot safely access the card. A loose heatsink, failing fan, damaged power socket, or repeated artifacts at stock settings warrants a qualified repair technician or the manufacturer’s service channel. The available troubleshooting guidance cannot diagnose your particular card or establish that it needs replacement.

Step 5: retest methodically

Use short, repeatable tests rather than running an endless benchmark. Start with the application that originally failed, then try a second 3D workload and a period of ordinary desktop use. Keep the stock profile unchanged while you determine whether the failure follows the card, one application, a driver version, or a specific load.

  2. Run a brief load and watch for artifacts, fan abnormalities, a clock drop, a TDR, a hang, or a reboot.
  3. End the test immediately if corruption appears or the system becomes unstable; do not wait for a crash to “prove” the result.
  4. Repeat once to check that the symptom is reproducible, then change only one item, such as the driver version or a cable arrangement.
  5. Log the outcome before making the next change.
Test result at stock Most useful interpretation Action
Stable in several workloads The previous tuning profile was likely unstable under at least one condition. Keep the stock baseline and retune only gradually, validating after every change.
Stable in one application but not another Application, API, shader, overlay, or driver interaction remains possible. Compare application updates, settings, and a clean driver state.
Fails only after the card warms up Cooling, thermal transfer, fan control, or heat-sensitive hardware needs attention. Inspect airflow and obtain service if stock operation still overheats.
Fails immediately at stock in every workload A software, power, slot, BIOS, or hardware fault is more likely than the removed overclock alone. Complete connection and driver checks, then seek professional diagnosis.
Artifacts before Windows loads The operating system is unlikely to be the sole cause. Power down, inspect the card and display path, and arrange hardware service if unchanged.

What to do if stock settings do not solve it

At this point, classify the failure instead of adding more tweaks. A clean driver install that still crashes in multiple applications points away from a single game. Correct seating and independent power leads that make no difference reduce—but do not eliminate—the chance of a connection problem. Persistent overheating despite clear airflow raises concern about the fan, cooler, thermal interface, or a sensor. Artifacts that remain at the firmware screen are especially unsuitable for software-only fixes.

Provide a technician with your symptom log, card model, driver and BIOS versions, the exact settings used, and photographs of any visible damage. Mention whether the card was ever exposed to liquid, unusual dust, or a power event. Do not claim that an overclock “killed” the card without a diagnosis; the same symptoms can arise from unrelated hardware or software faults.

How to retune after the system is stable

Only begin tuning after the machine has completed repeatable tests at factory defaults. Save the stock profile so it can be restored quickly. Change one control at a time, make a small adjustment, and run the same stability check after each change. Keep a written record of the last known-good value. If artifacts, hangs, crashes, TDRs, BSODs, or WHEA events return, stop the test and restore that last stable setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a benchmark that finishes once as proof of stability. Test the applications you actually use, include both sustained load and lighter transitions, and watch for delayed errors. The goal is a profile that remains reliable across your normal workloads, not the highest number shown by a tuning panel.

Architecture-specific note about memory artifacts

NVIDIA’s Ampere GA102 architecture documentation describes Error Detection and Replay for GDDR6X memory and discusses overclocking-related memory errors and artifacts in that architecture context. That information explains why memory tuning can produce visible corruption on those parts, but it is not a universal diagnosis for every GPU, memory type, or artifact pattern. Apply it only when the exact architecture and symptom match, and still follow the stock, cooling, software, and hardware sequence above.

When professional inspection is the right next step

  • The card overheats or produces artifacts at factory settings after airflow and dust checks.
  • Artifacts appear during boot or in firmware, not just inside one application.
  • A fan does not spin when the card’s documentation says it should, or a connector is damaged.
  • The system repeatedly reboots, reports WHEA events, or shows BSODs after driver and power checks.
  • You are not comfortable removing the card, inspecting power leads, or following a BIOS recovery procedure.

A repair shop or the card manufacturer can test the board, cooler, power delivery, and system compatibility with equipment and procedures that are not available through software monitoring. Until then, leave the card at stock and avoid repeated stress testing.
