If Google Earth Pro installation stops with 0x80070057 (sometimes mistyped as 0X080070057), treat it as a Windows installer or configuration failure—not a problem with satellite imagery. The most reliable sequence is to download the official desktop package, switch from the small web installer to Google’s full or standalone installer, use Earth Pro’s Repair Tool if the program opens, and then run Windows’ System File Checker and Windows Update troubleshooter if the block remains.

What Google Earth Pro error 0x80070057 means

Microsoft defines 0x80070057 as “The parameter is incorrect.” In this situation, the message identifies a Windows installation or configuration problem. It does not indicate that a map layer, satellite image, saved place, or geographic search is damaged. The failure can happen while the installer is unpacking files, reading an installation parameter, or working with an existing Windows or Google Earth configuration.

The spelling matters. The standard code is 0x80070057: after 0x come the digits 80070057. A title or screenshot that shows 0X080070057 contains an extra zero, but the troubleshooting path is the same when the underlying message is the Windows parameter error.

Google Earth Help Community has documented this code during an Earth Pro installation attempt. The community report is useful evidence for a workaround, but it is not a promise that one download fixes every computer. Start with Google’s own download page and keep the Windows-level checks for cases in which the product-specific steps do not work.

Pick the right path before changing anything

What you see Best first action Reason
The small installer stops or reports 0x80070057 before Earth Pro opens Download and run the latest full or standalone installer from Google’s official Earth page A complete package avoids the web bootstrapper that failed
Earth Pro opens, but startup, rendering, cache, or settings behavior is abnormal Open Help > Launch Repair Tool The Repair Tool can change cache, settings, startup mode, atmosphere, saved places, and graphics API without immediately reinstalling
The full installer also fails, or Windows shows broader update or configuration errors Run System File Checker, then the Windows Update troubleshooter These are Windows-level checks; they are not Google-specific guarantees

Before proceeding, close any Google Earth Pro window and save work in other applications. Use only the official Google Earth download page for the installer. If Earth Pro still opens, make a note of any important saved places before using a destructive Repair Tool option. Keep the exact error text and whether it appeared in the web installer or the full installer; that distinction determines the next branch.

Fix 1: Start with Google’s official desktop download

Google’s Earth page provides desktop downloads for PC, Mac, and Linux and also links to previous versions. For a Windows installation error, select the Windows package from that page rather than downloading an executable from a software mirror, a forum attachment, or an advert. A genuine installer gives you a known starting point and avoids adding another variable to an already ambiguous parameter error.

  1. Open Google’s official Google Earth download page in your browser.
  2. Choose the desktop package for your operating system. The Windows troubleshooting below applies to Google Earth Pro on Windows; Mac and Linux users should use the package and instructions for their own platform.
  3. Save the installer to a local folder so you can run the same file again if a later step requires it. Do not launch several copies at once.
  4. Run the downloaded installer and record the exact point at which it stops. If it completes, launch Earth Pro and test it before changing settings.

If the official download succeeds but an older copy fails, the difference is meaningful: the problem may be in the earlier installer or in a configuration left by that installation. Do not assume that deleting random folders or registry entries is safe; the documented repair choices below are less destructive.

Fix 2: Replace the web installer with the full or standalone installer

The most specific workaround reported for this exact code is to download and install the latest full, also called standalone, installer. The small web installer is a bootstrapper: it starts the installation and obtains what it needs during setup. A full package uses a different delivery path and is therefore worth trying when the bootstrapper repeatedly returns 0x80070057.

  1. Return to Google’s official Earth download page and look for the direct, full, or standalone desktop download. Google’s page also exposes links to previous versions; choose the current full package first unless you have a documented compatibility reason to use an older release.
  2. Let the larger download finish completely before opening it. A partial download can produce a different failure that looks like an installer problem.
  3. Close the web installer and any running Google Earth process, then launch the full installer once.
  4. Wait for the setup result. If it succeeds, open Earth Pro and check that it starts normally. If it fails with a different message, keep that new message; it can identify a separate Windows issue.

This is a practical community workaround, not a guaranteed Google remedy. It is especially sensible when the web installer fails early and you have not yet changed Earth Pro settings. If the full installer fails in exactly the same way, continue with the Windows checks rather than repeatedly downloading identical copies.

Fix 3: Use the Google Earth Repair Tool when Earth Pro opens

Google includes a Repair Tool for clearing the cache and addressing startup or rendering problems. It is available from inside Earth Pro, so it applies when the program launches at least far enough to show its menus.

  1. Open Google Earth Pro.
  2. Choose Help > Launch Repair Tool.
  3. When the tool appears, close Google Earth Pro but leave the Repair Tool window open.
  4. Choose the least destructive repair action that matches your symptom. Apply one change at a time and relaunch Earth Pro after each change so you know which action helped.
Repair Tool action Use it when Important effect
Clear disk cache Earth Pro starts slowly, displays stale data, or behaves as though cached data is corrupt Cached files are removed; Earth Pro can rebuild them during later use
Enable Safe Mode Startup or display behavior suggests a graphics or rendering conflict Earth Pro starts with safer graphics behavior for diagnosis
Turn off atmosphere The globe view or 3D display is unstable after launch The atmosphere visual effect is disabled, reducing one rendering variable
Restore default settings Preferences may be preventing normal startup or operation Custom Earth Pro settings are returned to their defaults
Switch between OpenGL and DirectX (Windows) Windows users see rendering problems that change with graphics mode Earth Pro uses the other supported graphics API; this option is Windows-specific
Delete My Places Saved-place data itself appears to prevent normal operation and less destructive options did not help Saved places are removed from the active file; preserve the generated backup first

Use the actions in a cautious order: clear the cache, try Safe Mode or turn off atmosphere for display issues, restore defaults for preference problems, and test the alternate OpenGL or DirectX mode on Windows. Treat Delete My Places as a last resort because it changes personal data, even though Google’s tool makes a backup.

Protect and recover saved places

Google’s Repair Tool documentation says that when it deletes the My Places file, it renames the old file to myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kml. That filename is your recovery copy. Do not delete or overwrite it while testing. If removing My Places allows Earth Pro to start, retain the backup and use it to recover saved places after the application is stable. Because the repair action is destructive to the active file, make this backup check before selecting it, not after.

Fix 4: Run Windows’ System File Checker

If the full installer still fails, check Windows components before assuming that Google Earth itself is damaged. Microsoft documents 0x80070057 as an incorrect-parameter error and recommends built-in Windows troubleshooting for related configuration failures. System File Checker (SFC) is the relevant first check.

  1. Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
  2. Choose the option to run Command Prompt as an administrator. Approve the Windows permission prompt if it appears.
  3. Enter sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  4. Leave the window open until the scan reaches 100 percent and reports its result. Do not interrupt it by closing the window or restarting midway.
  5. Restart Windows after the scan completes, then retry the official full Earth Pro installer once.

SFC is a Windows integrity check, not a Google Earth repair and not a guarantee that installation will succeed. Its value here is to identify or repair system-file problems that can make an installer reject a parameter. If SFC reports that it could not complete or could not repair files, retain that result and move to the Windows Update troubleshooter rather than repeating the same installation attempt indefinitely.

Fix 5: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Update components and installation configuration can be related. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter is therefore a reasonable system-level check when both the web and full Earth Pro installers fail.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Apply any recommended correction, restart if Windows requests it, and retry the official full installer.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  3. Open the additional troubleshooters if necessary, select Windows Update, and run it.
  4. Apply the result, restart Windows when requested, and test the full Earth Pro installer again.

Windows labels can vary slightly by release. If the troubleshooter is not shown in those locations, use Settings search for “Windows Update troubleshooter” rather than downloading a third-party repair utility. This step addresses Windows Update and configuration conditions; it does not prove that Google Earth’s installer is defective.

Repair Tool, full installer, or Windows troubleshooting?

These choices solve different layers of the problem. The full installer changes how the application is delivered. The Repair Tool changes Earth Pro’s own cache, preferences, graphics mode, and saved-place state. SFC and the Windows Update troubleshooter examine Windows itself. Choosing the narrowest tool first reduces unnecessary changes.

Option Best fit Scope and risk
Full or standalone installer The web installer fails before Earth Pro can run Replaces the download path; it does not alter saved places by itself
Repair Tool Earth Pro opens but has cache, startup, settings, atmosphere, or graphics symptoms Product-specific; most actions are reversible or limited, but deleting My Places changes saved data
SFC Both installers fail and Windows may have damaged system files Windows-wide integrity check; it is not a product-specific fix
Windows Update troubleshooter Installation failure accompanies update or configuration problems Windows-wide update diagnosis; it does not repair every installer error

What to do when 0x80070057 still appears

At this point, confirm the exact code and the sequence that produced it. A screenshot or copied message is more useful than a paraphrase, especially if the full installer now reports a different error. Write down your Windows edition, whether the web or full package was used, whether SFC completed, and whether the Windows Update troubleshooter made a change.

  • If only the web installer failed, retry the current full or standalone package from Google.
  • If Earth Pro opens, use the Repair Tool and test cache, Safe Mode, settings, and graphics options before deleting My Places.
  • If neither installer works, complete SFC and the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and make one final full-installer attempt.
  • If the failure remains, use the exact message when consulting Google Earth Help Community or Microsoft support. Avoid registry cleaners, repackaged installers, and instructions that ask you to delete saved-place files without a backup.

Do not interpret a persistent 0x80070057 as evidence that Google’s imagery service is unavailable. The code describes the Windows installation or parameter path; imagery and map-content troubleshooting is a different problem.

Common mistakes that make this error harder to fix

  • Searching for the mistyped code: use 0x80070057 when looking up Microsoft or Google guidance, while noting the extra zero if it appears in your original title or screenshot.
  • Repeating the same bootstrapper: a web installer that fails repeatedly is a reason to switch to the full package, not to launch multiple copies.
  • Deleting My Places first: use the cache, Safe Mode, settings, and graphics options first, and keep myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kml safe if you eventually remove saved places.
  • Using a mirror download: third-party packages make it impossible to tell whether the code came from Google Earth, a modified installer, or the download source.
  • Calling a Windows check a guaranteed fix: SFC and the Windows Update troubleshooter are sensible diagnostics, but neither is a Google-specific promise of success.

The practical order is therefore: official download, full installer, Repair Tool when available, then SFC and Windows Update troubleshooting. Stop after the first step that resolves the issue; unnecessary repairs can change settings or personal data without adding benefit.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, adjust settings that affect CPU, RAM and disk load, clear temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, and record app crashes. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, results vary, and no utility repairs every crash.
