Google Earth error 0x80070057 is Windows’ E_INVALIDARG (“one or more arguments are not valid”) code. It is generic: a failed Google Earth installation or startup can result from damaged files, permissions, or an incorrect Windows configuration, and the code alone does not prove that Google Earth is corrupted.
Use this order: run Google Earth Pro’s Repair Tool if the program opens, retry with the latest full installer if the web installer fails, then apply Windows Update and System File Checker checks. The safest repair depends on whether the failure happens while downloading, installing, launching, or rendering graphics.

First, correct the error code and identify the failure stage
The code is commonly mistyped as 0X800070057. The documented Windows code is 0x80070057. Microsoft defines it as E_INVALIDARG, meaning that a program or Windows component received an invalid argument. In practice, Windows associates this class of failure with corrupted files, permission problems, and incorrect system configuration.

- Intended for ages 5+ years; requires 4 AA batteries; batteries included for demo purposes only; new batteries recommended for regular use
- During a web download: the small installer may be unable to retrieve or pass the required files.
- During installation: the installer may be receiving invalid settings, encountering damaged data, or lacking permission to write.
- When Google Earth Pro starts: its local settings, cache, saved places, or graphics mode may be damaged or incompatible.
- When the globe or 3D view renders: the problem is more likely to involve the graphics path, where switching between OpenGL and DirectX can help.
This distinction matters because a graphics repair cannot fix a download failure, and a Windows file check will not restore a deleted Google Earth place list.
Protect settings and saved places before repairing
Cache clearing and default-setting restoration are designed to remove local state, but deleting My Places is more consequential. If you need saved locations, note that Google Earth Pro’s Repair Tool creates a backup named myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kml when you use its Delete My Places option. Do not delete that backup until Google Earth opens and you have confirmed that your places are either restored or no longer needed.
Close Google Earth before running a repair operation when the tool asks you to do so. Save other work, and restart Windows before retrying an installation. Download installers only from Google’s official Google Earth site; do not use repackaged executables or random “fix” downloads.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix Google Earth Pro with the built-in Repair Tool
Use this first when Google Earth Pro opens, or when its startup window gives you access to the Help menu. Google specifically provides the Repair Tool for clearing cache and fixing startup problems.
Clear the disk cache
- Open Google Earth Pro.
- Select Help > Launch Repair Tool.
- When Google Earth asks you to close the application, close it and continue in the Repair Tool window.
- Choose Clear disk cache.
- Reopen Google Earth Pro and test the action that produced 0x80070057.
Clearing the cache removes temporary local map data. It does not intentionally remove your saved places. The first map views after clearing may take longer to load because Google Earth must rebuild temporary data.

Restore default settings
- Open the Repair Tool through Help > Launch Repair Tool.
- Close Google Earth when prompted.
- Select Restore default settings.
- Start Google Earth Pro again and retry the failed operation.
This resets Google Earth’s local preferences. It is appropriate when the application starts but immediately fails, behaves inconsistently, or has settings that prevent normal startup. Record any custom preferences you need before applying it.
Delete My Places only when the saved-place data is the suspected cause
- Launch the Repair Tool from Help > Launch Repair Tool.
- Close Google Earth when prompted.
- Choose Delete My Places.
- After the operation, look for
myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kmland keep it in a safe location. - Open Google Earth and test startup. If the error disappears, the saved-place data was likely involved; if it remains, restore your places only after confirming that the application is stable.
This is a targeted diagnostic step, not a routine first action. Because it changes user data, use cache clearing and default restoration first.

Switch the graphics mode for rendering or startup problems
The Repair Tool on Windows lets you switch between OpenGL and DirectX. Use this option when the error appears as Google Earth tries to display the 3D view, when the window is blank, or when startup fails around graphics initialization.
- Open Help > Launch Repair Tool.
- Close Google Earth when prompted.
- Change the rendering mode from OpenGL to DirectX, or from DirectX to OpenGL.
- Reopen Google Earth Pro and test the same view or action.
This changes the graphics path; it does not repair an installer that fails before Google Earth is installed.
Use the full Google Earth Pro installer when the web installer fails
If 0x80070057 appears while the small web installer is downloading or installing Google Earth Pro, download the latest full Google Earth Pro installer from Google’s official Google Earth site and run that package instead. A Google Earth Community report describing this exact Windows error says the full installer resolved the failure when the web installer did not. That is a community-reported workaround, not a Google-published explanation of the underlying cause, so it should be treated as a practical retry rather than a guaranteed fix.

- Restart Windows.
- Go to Google’s official Google Earth site and choose the current Google Earth Pro download for Windows.
- Select the full or standalone installer when that option is offered, rather than repeating the small web installer.
- Save the installer locally, then run it again.
- If Windows asks for permission to make changes, verify that the publisher and file are the expected Google installer before accepting.
- Record whether the error occurs before the installation wizard opens, while files are being copied, or at the final configuration step.
Do not manually delete the Windows Installer cache to make room for another attempt. That cache can be required by Windows to repair, update, or remove installed programs; deleting it can create a separate servicing problem.

Run Windows checks for permissions, configuration, and damaged system files
When the Repair Tool and full installer do not resolve the issue, check Windows itself. Microsoft’s guidance for 0x80070057-class failures points to the Windows Update troubleshooter, permission and configuration checks, and System File Checker when damaged system files are suspected.
Install pending Windows updates and run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Settings.
- On Windows 11, go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and run the troubleshooter.
- Apply any repair that Windows recommends, restart the computer, and retry Google Earth.
The troubleshooter addresses Windows Update components and related configuration. It may not repair Google Earth’s own cache or saved-place file, so use it as a system-level step rather than a replacement for the Repair Tool.
Check that your account can install software
An installation needs permission to write its program files and related configuration. Confirm that you are signed in with an administrator account or that you can provide administrator credentials when Windows requests them. If the installer works for an administrator account but not for a standard account, the difference points to permissions or policy rather than a Google Earth graphics setting.
Also check whether security or organizational policy is blocking software installation. On a managed work or school PC, an administrator may need to approve the install; do not bypass those controls by downloading an unofficial modified installer.

Run System File Checker
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. - At the elevated prompt, enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Do not close the window while the scan is running.
- Read the result, restart Windows, and retry the Google Earth installation or launch.
System File Checker examines protected Windows system files and attempts to repair corruption it can identify. If it reports that it could not complete the operation, note the message rather than repeatedly interrupting the scan. That result indicates a Windows servicing issue that should be resolved before drawing conclusions about Google Earth.

What the error does—and does not—tell you
0x80070057 is not a Google Earth-specific diagnosis. It is a reusable Windows status code, so the same number can appear in unrelated operations. The code does not by itself establish that malware is present, that a graphics driver is defective, or that Google Earth’s servers are unavailable. Use the stage of failure and the result of each test to narrow the cause.
A successful full-installer run after a web-installer failure suggests that the original download or bootstrap path was the obstacle, but it does not prove why. Likewise, a successful launch after clearing the cache indicates that local Google Earth data was involved, but it does not mean every future failure will have the same cause.
If the error remains after all steps
- Write down the Windows edition, whether you used the web or full installer, and the exact point at which the message appears.
- Record which Repair Tool options you tried and whether they changed startup, graphics, or saved-place behavior.
- Keep the
myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kmlfile if you used Delete My Places. - Note the result reported by Windows Update troubleshooting and
sfc /scannow. - Use those details when contacting Google Earth support or asking a Windows administrator for help; they distinguish an installer-stage failure from a local-profile or Windows-system failure.
Do not keep repeating the same web installer, manually remove the Windows Installer cache, or discard your My Places backup while troubleshooting. Those actions can remove useful recovery options without addressing the invalid-argument condition.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL issues and app-crash information while offering Windows cleanup and settings tools. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category lasting at least two days before a subscription.
