How to Fix Google Earth “Access Denied” Error 0x80070005 on Windows

Google Earth’s 0x80070005 error means Windows denied an operation. The code does not identify a particular Google Earth file, so the safest fix is to start with Google Earth Pro’s built-in Repair Tool, then investigate security software, folder and registry permissions, service-account rights, or Group Policy only if the built-in repairs fail. The steps below apply to Google Earth Pro on Windows and preserve recoverable data wherever possible.

What 0x80070005 means in Google Earth

The string sometimes appears in searches as “0X800700,” but the Windows condition normally meant here is 0x80070005. Microsoft identifies it as E_ACCESSDENIED, or “Access denied: the requested action requires elevated privileges.” In practical terms, a Google Earth process tried to read, write, register, or change something and Windows refused the request.

The code alone does not tell you whether the blocked item is a cache file, a configuration folder, a registry entry, a protected service, or an operation intercepted by security software. That is why changing broad permissions or importing registry fixes at random is risky and often ineffective.

Google Earth-specific repairs should come before Windows-wide changes. Cache and default-setting repairs are comparatively reversible; registry, DCOM, Group Policy, and access-control-list (ACL) changes can affect other applications and should be based on evidence from the affected subsystem.

Before you start

  • Use an administrator account, or have administrator credentials available when Windows requests elevation.
  • Close other Google Earth windows and save any work in other applications.
  • If your saved places are important, avoid deleting them until you understand the backup behavior described below.
  • Note whether the failure occurs when Google Earth starts, when it loads a place, when it saves data, or when it changes a setting. That symptom helps identify the blocked subsystem.
  • Do not disable antivirus or endpoint protection permanently. If you test whether security software is involved, use its documented, temporary exclusion or review function and restore protection immediately.

Run Google Earth Pro’s Repair Tool first

Google’s documented first-line workflow is the Repair Tool. It can clear the local disk cache, restore default settings, switch graphics modes, and handle saved-place data without immediately editing Windows permissions.

  1. Open Google Earth Pro.
  2. On the menu bar, select Help > Launch Repair Tool.
  3. Leave the Repair Tool window open. When it instructs you to close Google Earth Pro, close the main Earth window while keeping the Repair Tool running.
  4. Choose one repair action, allow it to finish, and then reopen Google Earth Pro to test the operation that produced the error.

Test after each action rather than selecting every option at once. That makes it clear which change helped and avoids unnecessary resets.

Clear disk cache

Choose Clear disk cache when Earth fails while loading imagery, places, or other locally cached content, or when the cache may be damaged. This removes cached data that Earth can recreate. It does not by itself repair Windows permissions, a blocked executable, or a damaged registry subsystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore default settings

Choose Restore default settings when the problem follows a preference change or Earth will not open normally. This resets Google Earth configuration to its defaults. Recheck display, navigation, network, and other preferences after the program starts again.

Switch between OpenGL and DirectX for rendering failures

If the denial appears alongside a blank globe, flickering, a crash during rendering, or other graphics symptoms, use Switch between OpenGL and DirectX in the Repair Tool. Google notes that hardware and driver compatibility can make one graphics mode work better than the other. This is a rendering compatibility test, not a general permission repair.

Delete My Places only when the saved-place file is suspected

A corrupt saved-place file can prevent Earth from completing startup or loading a profile. Use Delete My Places only when that is a plausible cause and you have considered the consequences. Google Earth renames the existing file to myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kml, creating a recovery copy rather than silently discarding it. After Earth starts, you can inspect the backup and reimport usable places instead of losing them permanently.

Test the result and identify the scope

After each repair, perform the same action that originally failed. Record whether the error is gone, changed, or now occurs at a different point. The scope of the failure determines the next step:

Every repair action is denied or Earth cannot access its files Windows access control, security software, or policy Continue with the Windows checks below.

Check whether security software is locking Google Earth

Antivirus, endpoint protection, ransomware protection, and application-control features can prevent an application from creating or modifying files. A lock can produce the same 0x80070005 code as a missing Windows permission.

  1. Open the security product’s event, quarantine, blocked-application, or protection-history view.
  2. Look for an event at the exact time Google Earth failed. Record the blocked file or folder and the rule that acted.
  3. If the product provides a documented way to allow a trusted application, use that process for the specific Google Earth executable or data location rather than disabling protection globally.
  4. Retry Google Earth, then confirm that normal protection remains enabled.

If no security event names Google Earth or one of its files, do not assume security software is the cause. Continue to the access and policy checks instead.

Verify Windows account and folder access

Google Earth needs to read its program files and write user-specific configuration and cache data. A damaged profile, inherited-permission change, or migration from another Windows account can leave the current user without the required rights.

  • 8 GB of internal memory for map downloads plus a micro SD card slot
  1. Identify the exact location involved. The failure may be in the Google Earth installation directory, the current user’s application-data location, a temporary folder, or a file named in an error or security log.
  2. In File Explorer, right-click the affected folder or file and choose Properties > Security.
  3. Confirm that the account running Google Earth is listed and has the access needed for the operation. Read access is required to open files; writing or changing settings requires the corresponding write or modify permission.
  4. Check Advanced security settings for inheritance and the owner. Do not take ownership or replace inherited ACLs merely because the dialog looks complex; identify which entry is missing first.
  5. If the location belongs to another user profile or an old installation, copy recoverable personal data to a safe location and use the supported application or Windows repair process rather than granting broad access to the entire drive.

Do not grant “Everyone” full control as a shortcut. Overly broad ACLs weaken Windows security and may not fix a denial caused by a service, registry, policy, or security product.

Check SYSTEM and service-account permissions

Some Windows operations run under SYSTEM or another service account rather than under your interactive account. Microsoft’s general guidance identifies loss of service-account or SYSTEM rights as a possible source of 0x80070005. If an installer, updater, scheduled task, or system component fails while Google Earth itself appears to have normal user access, inspect the event details for the account that was denied.

Restore only the specific permission documented for that component. The correct account and ACL differ by subsystem, so copying permissions from an unrelated computer or applying a blanket reset can create new failures.

Check Group Policy and managed-device restrictions

On a work, school, or family-managed PC, Group Policy or endpoint-management rules may block application changes, removable data, scripting, graphics components, or access to particular folders. A policy can therefore produce an access-denied code even when the local folder permissions look correct.

  1. Ask the device administrator whether a policy changed shortly before the problem began.
  2. Review Windows policy or management events for a denial at the same time as the Google Earth failure.
  3. Do not alter organizational policy, security baselines, or registry-backed policy values without administrator approval.
  4. If the machine is managed, provide the administrator with the exact code, timestamp, Google Earth action, and any blocked path shown in logs.

Use Microsoft’s scenario-specific guidance before registry or DCOM edits

Microsoft documents 0x80070005 across several Windows subsystems, including cases where a process cannot access required files, folders, or registry entries. The remedy depends on the subsystem. A registry permission problem, a DCOM activation denial, a Windows Update failure, and a protected-folder block are not interchangeable diagnoses.

Before changing a registry key, DCOM launch permission, component-store ACL, or policy value:

  • Write down the exact key, component, account, and denied operation identified by an event or Microsoft procedure.
  • Create a system backup or restore point appropriate to your Windows edition and keep a separate copy of important personal files.
  • Export a registry key before editing it, when the documented procedure calls for that precaution.
  • Follow the instructions for your Windows version and scenario exactly; do not import a fix file intended for a different error or subsystem.
  • Restart only after the documented change is complete, then test Google Earth and the Windows component that originally reported the denial.

Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting guidance specifically calls for an operating-system backup before resetting component-store permissions. Broad permission resets can break updates, installers, and unrelated applications, so they should be a last resort rather than a first Google Earth fix.

Repair or reinstall Google Earth only after protecting user data

If the Repair Tool and Windows access checks do not resolve the problem, the installation itself may be incomplete or damaged. Preserve any saved-place data, including myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kml, before removing software. Then use the normal Windows uninstall and Google-supported installation process for your edition. A reinstall replaces application files; it does not automatically correct a restrictive Group Policy, a security-product block, or a damaged Windows ACL, so those causes still need attention if the error returns.

After reinstalling, test once with default settings before restoring custom profiles or importing old data. If the fresh installation fails immediately with the same code, that points away from ordinary application-file corruption and toward Windows access control, security software, or policy.

Common mistakes that make 0x80070005 worse

  • Deleting My Places without checking the backup: the repair workflow creates a recovery-named KML file; preserve it before removing anything else.
  • Changing every permission at once: you lose the evidence showing which account or path was denied and may damage Windows security.
  • Disabling protection permanently: this removes a safety control without proving that it caused the block.
  • Using a registry or DCOM fix from a different scenario: identical error codes can arise in unrelated subsystems.
  • Assuming a graphics-mode switch fixes permissions: OpenGL and DirectX address rendering compatibility, not file or registry access.
  • Testing only by launching the program: repeat the exact save, load, update, or rendering action that originally failed.

When to stop and seek administrator help

Escalate to the device administrator or Windows support when the affected path belongs to SYSTEM, a managed policy blocks the action, the event log names a service or DCOM account, or a proposed fix requires replacing broad ACLs. Provide the error code, the action that triggers it, the time, the Repair Tool actions already tried, the affected path or component, and any security or policy event. That information is more useful than simply reporting that Google Earth “will not open.”

Optional shortcut after the manual fixes

Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for Windows problems beyond a single Google Earth setting. It can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, and shared DLL files; it also offers settings tweaks, temporary-file and cache cleanup, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a subscription; it complements antivirus software and does not replace it, and results vary.

Frequently asked questions

Is 0x80070005 a Google Earth-specific error?

No. It is a Windows access-denied condition that Google Earth may surface when Windows refuses a file, folder, registry, service, or policy operation.

Will clearing the disk cache delete my saved places?

Clearing the disk cache removes cached content. It is separate from the Repair Tool’s Delete My Places action, which renames the saved-place file to myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kml for recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I run Google Earth as administrator permanently?

Use elevation only when a documented operation requires it. Permanent elevation can mask an underlying permission or policy problem and gives the application more access than it normally needs.

Why can changing OpenGL to DirectX help?

Google Earth can behave differently with each graphics API. Hardware or driver compatibility may make one mode work when the other produces rendering failures; this does not repair unrelated Windows access controls.
