How to fix Google Discover when it stops showing relevant stories

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Google Discover is showing unrelated stories, first identify which feed you are using: Discover in the Google app, Discover on google.com in a phone browser, a swipe-right home-screen panel, or Chrome’s separate suggestions feed on an Android New Tab page. Each surface has different controls. Then review activity-based personalization, followed and hidden interests, language, location, refresh settings, and whether Discover has been switched off. Google documents these controls but does not promise that any single change will produce a particular feed or say how quickly a preference change will take effect.

Use the matching steps below rather than applying Chrome instructions to the Google app. Menu names can differ because Google is updating Search settings and because some options vary by country and language.

First, identify the Discover feed you are troubleshooting

“Discover” is not one universal screen. Google provides it in the Google app, on google.com when viewed on a phone, and on some devices as a panel reached by swiping right from the home screen. Chrome for Android can also show a separate Discover suggestions feed on a New Tab page. Google’s controls are not identical across these surfaces, so start here. Google’s Discover documentation and Chrome’s New Tab guidance describe the differences.

Where the cards appear Use these controls Refresh action
Google app on Android or iPhone Profile picture → Settings → personalization or interests; activity and Discover settings Pull down on the feed; check Data Saver if cards become stale
google.com in a mobile browser Google Account and Discover settings; verify “Show Discover on home page” where available Reload the page
Swipe-right panel on some Android phones Use the Google app or device panel’s own controls; labels depend on the device Refresh within that panel
Chrome for Android New Tab page Card menu, interest controls, Chrome sign-in and activity settings Pull down on the New Tab page

If the cards are in Chrome’s New Tab page, changing an interest in the Google app may not alter that feed immediately because Chrome maintains its own suggestions surface.

Why identifying the surface matters

A disappearing Google app feed and an irrelevant Chrome New Tab feed can look similar, but they are not the same problem. The Google app uses its Discover controls, while Chrome exposes card-level controls and its own New Tab refresh gesture. A setting changed in one place may therefore leave the other feed unchanged. Take a screenshot or note the app name before troubleshooting so you do not repeatedly change the wrong account or menu.

Use this symptom-to-fix diagnosis

Match the symptom to the documented control before changing several settings at once.

What you see Most likely area to check Why it fits
Stories are about topics you never read Search Services History, Personalized recommendations, and followed interests Discover can use account activity and saved interests to select updates.
A topic or publisher disappeared after you dismissed one card Not Interested and Hidden lists Earlier dismissals can suppress a topic or source until you restore it.
Cards are in the wrong language or region Language filters, home location, and device location context Google lists language and location signals among Discover inputs.
The feed barely changes Data Saver, disabled Discover, or a stale surface Data Saver can reduce refresh frequency; Discover also has an on/off switch.
Only Chrome’s New Tab cards seem wrong Chrome activity, article interactions, and New Tab controls Chrome says its signed-in suggestions can use recent Web & App Activity and taps or scrolls on suggested articles.

Do not treat every irrelevant card as evidence that personalization is disabled. Discover is a recommendation stream, not a list of only followed publishers. Google can combine activity, device and product information, account-stored data, location signals and explicit feedback, so an unfamiliar story can still be a normal result. The useful distinction is whether the problem affects one card, one topic, one language or the entire feed.

Correct personalization in the Google app

Check Search Services History and Personalized recommendations

Google’s currently surfaced instructions direct you to open the Google app and review two areas: Search Services History and Personalized recommendations. Search Services History stores searches and other activity in your Google Account. Personalized recommendations uses saved activity to help select recommendations. Open the Google app, tap your profile picture, choose Settings, then look for the Search or personalization section and open those controls. The exact path and labels can differ while Google updates Search settings. See Google’s current menu guidance.

Some accounts still show older or localized names such as Web & App Activity and Personal results. Treat those as equivalent labels to look for in the Google Account’s privacy and data controls, not as a guarantee that every device will display them. If history is paused or recommendations are disabled, enable only the settings you are comfortable sharing; Discover cannot use activity that your account does not retain.

Understand the privacy trade-off

Activity-based recommendations are a choice, not a requirement. Turning history or personalized recommendations on can give Google more signals about searches and interactions, but it also means more account activity is retained or used for recommendations. If you prefer to keep those controls paused, do not expect Discover to reconstruct the same relevance from information it cannot access. There is no separate switch that guarantees a highly personalized feed while all activity signals remain unavailable.

Review followed interests

In the Google app, open your profile menu and find Personalization or Interests. Review the Following list and unfollow subjects that no longer describe what you want. When you search for a topic, Google may offer a follow control; following it tells Discover to provide updates for that interest. Keep the list focused on durable interests rather than every one-time search, so an old curiosity does not dominate your feed. Google’s Discover help explains following and unfollowing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Following a topic is not the same as subscribing to every article about it. It gives Discover an explicit interest signal, while other activity and context can still influence which cards are selected. If a followed topic is missing, verify that it was not also hidden under Not Interested and that the feed is enabled on the surface you are viewing.

Restore topics and publishers you hid

Dismissed cards can create an accidental filter. In the same interests area, open Not interested or Hidden and inspect both topics and sources. Restore anything you want to see again. For a card that is currently unwanted, tap its More menu and choose the option to mark the topic as not interesting or to stop showing content from that source. Google notes that these controls are not available in every language or region, so a missing button may be an availability difference rather than an account error.

Check both lists instead of assuming that a missing publisher was unfollowed. A topic-level block can remove many publishers at once, while a source-level choice affects one outlet. Restore one item, refresh, and observe the feed before making several changes; that makes it easier to identify which preference caused the disappearance.

Check language and location signals

Remove an unintended language filter

Discover can hide stories written in another language and lets you restore languages that were previously hidden. Open the Discover or interests settings and look for language controls. If the feed suddenly contains only one language, check that a language was not removed accidentally. The available list depends on the interface, country, and language of your account. Google’s Discover settings page covers language and related filters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Language filtering is separate from following a topic. You can follow a subject and still miss its cards if the stories are in a hidden language. Conversely, restoring a language may add more eligible stories without changing your followed-interest list. If a language option is absent, Google says controls can vary by country or language; it is not proof that the account is malfunctioning.

Verify location context

Google says some Discover updates use your home location. If a home location is unavailable, it may estimate your location from other signals such as your IP address. Check the Google Account location context and the device’s location permission when local news, weather, or regional stories are consistently wrong. A location correction will not override every other signal: Google also lists device information, other Google products, account-stored data, and activity settings as inputs. Review the inputs Google lists for Discover.

Location is especially worth checking after travel, a network change, or a move. IP-based estimates can reflect the network’s apparent location rather than your physical address. Correcting home location and allowing the appropriate device location context can improve local relevance, but Google does not promise that every card will immediately become local or that location will outweigh your other activity signals.

Make sure the feed can refresh

Turn off Data Saver temporarily in the Google app

Google lists Data Saver as a setting that can keep features such as Discover from refreshing as often. If cards remain unchanged for an unusually long period, open the Google app’s profile menu, choose Settings, and find Data Saver. Disable it temporarily, refresh Discover, and compare the result. Re-enable it if conserving mobile data is more important than frequent updates. This setting affects refresh behavior; it does not rewrite your followed interests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exact Data Saver location can vary by app version. Google’s app-settings help describes the Data Saver effect.

Data Saver is a refresh check, not a relevance reset. If cards update after you disable it but remain off-topic, continue with activity, interest, language and location checks. If they do not update, confirm that you are online and using the intended Google account before changing more preferences.

Check whether Discover was switched off

If the feed has disappeared rather than merely becoming less relevant, verify the master switch. In the Google app, open your profile picture, select Settings, then General, and look for Discover. On supported regions and devices, google.com has a separate Show Discover on home page setting. Turn the appropriate switch on, then reload the page or reopen the app. Use Google’s “Turn off Discover” instructions in reverse to re-enable it.

Do not assume that an empty feed means the switch is off. A device may not support a particular surface, or you may be looking at Chrome’s New Tab suggestions instead of Google Discover. Confirm the surface first, then check its own enablement control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix Chrome for Android’s separate suggestions feed

Refresh the New Tab page

Open a new tab in Chrome for Android and pull down on the page to refresh suggested articles. This is a Chrome action, not the same as refreshing the Google app’s Discover tab. Chrome documents pull-to-refresh and New Tab controls here.

Understand what Chrome uses

When you are signed in, Chrome says suggested articles may be based on recent Web & App Activity and interactions with the cards, including tapping an article or scrolling past it. That means repeatedly opening a subject can increase its presence, while quickly scrolling through a subject is still an interaction signal. Chrome’s wording is conditional—“depending on your settings”—so an account with activity controls paused may receive different suggestions.

This also explains why skimming can have an unintended effect. Scrolling past a card is listed as an interaction, so do not rapidly scroll through unwanted subjects while trying to dismiss them. Use the card’s More menu and choose the available hide, source or topic control instead. The exact options depend on the version, account and region.

Adjust one card at a time

Open the card’s More menu to hide an article, remove a source, or indicate that a topic is not interesting when those options are offered. Review Chrome’s interest controls on the New Tab page and remove subjects that no longer fit. Because Chrome’s feed is a distinct surface, make these changes there even if your Google app interests are already correct.

  1. Record the surface. Note whether the problem is in the Google app, mobile google.com, a home-screen panel, or Chrome New Tab.
  2. Check that the feed is enabled. Confirm Discover or “Show Discover on home page” is on for that surface.
  3. Inspect activity settings. Open Search Services History and Personalized recommendations; if your interface uses Web & App Activity or Personal results, use those current equivalents.
  4. Clean up interests. Unfollow obsolete topics, then inspect Not Interested or Hidden for accidental blocks.
  5. Correct context. Review language filters and the account/device location context, especially for local stories.
  6. Refresh under normal connectivity. Temporarily disable Data Saver in the Google app, pull down to refresh, and reopen the feed.
  7. Test one change. Follow one clearly relevant interest or restore one hidden source, then observe future cards instead of making many simultaneous changes.

There is no published preference-propagation time, so Google’s documentation supports treating these as checks, not a guaranteed instant fix. If labels do not match, use the current visible menu and Google’s updated help rather than searching for an old path.

Avoid these common troubleshooting mistakes

  • Changing the wrong surface: Google app interests do not provide every Chrome New Tab control.
  • Confusing refresh with relevance: Data Saver can delay updates, but disabling it does not rewrite interest signals.
  • Blocking instead of restoring: Repeatedly dismissing cards can add topics or publishers to Not Interested or Hidden.
  • Assuming labels are universal: Google is updating Search settings, and menu names vary by account, country and language.
  • Expecting an instant result: Google publishes no guaranteed propagation time or ranking formula.
  • Ignoring privacy choices: Paused activity and disabled recommendations limit the signals Discover can use.

What Discover can—and cannot—promise

Google describes Discover as a way to receive updates for interests such as a favorite sports team or news site without searching for them. It does not publish a complete individual-feed ranking formula, a guaranteed relevance level, or a timetable for preference changes. The documented inputs include device and other Google-product information, account data, activity settings, location signals, followed interests, and explicit feedback such as hiding a topic or source.

As a result, a well-configured feed can still contain unfamiliar stories. Relevance is a recommendation outcome, not a fixed subscription list. If a single card is wrong, use its feedback menu; if the entire feed is wrong, work through activity, interests, context, and refresh settings in that order.

Google’s support wording says, “With Discover, you can get updates for your interests, like your favorite sports team or news site, without searching for them.” Chrome similarly says that, depending on settings, suggested articles can be based on recent Web & App Activity and interactions such as tapping or scrolling past an article. Those descriptions explain the available controls, not a promise that every card will match a stated preference.

When to stop troubleshooting

After you have confirmed the correct surface, enabled Discover, checked activity and recommendation controls, removed accidental interest blocks, corrected language and location, and refreshed without Data Saver, the remaining behavior may simply reflect Google’s recommendation system or a regional feature difference. The official help pages do not identify a deeper user-facing ranking control. Keep the settings that match your privacy and data preferences, and use card-level feedback as new stories appear.

If the feed is still empty or unavailable, document which surface, account and device are affected and compare another supported surface. A difference between the Google app and Chrome points to surface-specific controls; identical behavior across both points you back to account activity, interests, language and location. There is no hardware purchase or paid service required by Google’s documented fixes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my Google Discover stories suddenly in another language?

Open Discover’s language controls and restore the language you want to see. Also check whether a hidden-language filter was enabled. Available controls vary by country and language.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I get a missing topic back in Discover?

Open the Google app’s Personalization or Interests area, inspect Following and the Not Interested or Hidden lists, and follow the topic again or restore it if it was suppressed.

Why does Chrome show different stories from the Google app?

Chrome for Android’s New Tab suggestions are a separate surface. When signed in, Chrome may use recent Web & App Activity and interactions such as taps or scrolling, so adjust interests and refresh controls on the New Tab page itself.

How long does it take for a Discover preference change to work?

Google does not publish a guaranteed propagation time. The documented settings are controls to check, not a promise that a particular story or feed will appear immediately.

Why is Google Discover showing local stories from the wrong place?

Check your Google Account home location, device location context and network conditions. Google may estimate location from signals such as IP address when home location is unavailable, and location is only one of several Discover inputs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Data Saver make Discover look broken?

Yes. Google says Data Saver can make Discover refresh less often. Disable it temporarily, refresh the Google app, and then decide whether conserving mobile data is more important than frequent updates.

What should I do if Discover disappeared completely?

Verify that Discover is enabled in the Google app. On supported regions, also check “Show Discover on home page” at google.com. Confirm that you are not looking at Chrome’s separate New Tab suggestions feed.

Why did dismissing articles make an entire subject disappear?

A card’s More menu can mark a topic as not interesting or stop content from a source. Inspect the Not Interested or Hidden lists and restore the topic or publisher if the dismissal was accidental.

Will following one topic force Discover to show only that topic?

No. Following supplies an explicit interest signal, but Google can also use activity, device and product information, account data, location and other feedback. It is not a fixed subscription list.

The Bottom Line

Identify the exact Discover surface, then check the feed switch, activity and recommendation settings, followed and hidden interests, language, location and refresh behavior. Chrome New Tab suggestions need their own controls. Google documents these checks but does not guarantee a particular feed or an instant change.
