Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix the problem by identifying which of four failures you have: Google Apps (GApps) are missing or mismatched, the Play Store says the device is not certified, Google Play services is missing or outdated, or one banking app rejects the phone. These are separate problems with different remedies. Reinstalling GApps will not automatically satisfy a bank’s security policy, and turning off Play Protect’s malware scanning will not certify an unlocked, modified device.
Before changing anything, record the phone model and codename, LineageOS and Android versions, whether the build is official, the GApps package and version, root or other modifications, and the exact error. Those details determine which device guide and compatibility rules apply.

Identify the failure before changing the phone
Use the symptom, not the app name, to choose the first branch. A phone can have working Google apps while a bank blocks it, or have a perfectly valid LineageOS installation with no Google components at all.
| What you see | Most likely branch | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Play Store and Google apps are absent, crash, or show setup errors | GApps were not installed, are for the wrong Android release or architecture, or were installed at the wrong time | Check the exact device guide and GApps package; do not add a random package after setup |
| Play Store shows “Device is not certified” | Google’s device-certification check failed | Confirm the certification screen and inspect the device’s bootloader, OS, root, and update state |
| “Google Play services cannot be found,” is disabled, or is outdated | The service package is absent, disabled, or unable to update | Check that Google Play services is installed, enabled, and current |
| Only one banking app refuses to launch, sign in, or authenticate | The bank’s own integrity, device, region, or app-version policy rejected the phone | Capture the exact message and ask the bank whether this device and OS are supported |
“Not rooted” is not the same as “passes every integrity check.” Conversely, an uncertified Play Store status does not prove that a particular bank is the cause of the problem. Keep the branches separate while troubleshooting.

Install Google Apps in the sequence LineageOS expects
Google Apps are optional in LineageOS. The operating system can boot and run without them, and a LineageOS installation does not include the Play Store by default. If you want Google services, the package must match both the Android version supplied by your LineageOS build and the phone’s CPU architecture.
Check the package and device guide
- Use the official LineageOS guide for the exact phone model and codename, not a guide for a visually similar handset.
- Verify the Android version required by that build. A package made for a different Android release can fail to boot, crash during setup, or leave services in an unusable state.
- Verify the architecture specified by the guide. A package for the wrong architecture is not a safe substitute.
- Use the GApps package recommended by the guide or its current FAQ. “Works on another phone” is not a compatibility test for yours.
Sideload before the first LineageOS boot
LineageOS installation guidance requires the recommended Google Apps package to be sideloaded while you are still in recovery, before the first boot into LineageOS. The timing matters because the initial setup establishes the system partition and Google components together.
- Back up anything you need and read the complete device-specific installation guide, including firmware and recovery requirements.
- Install the supported LineageOS build and remain in the recovery environment when the guide instructs you to add optional packages.
- Choose the matching GApps package for that Android release and architecture.
- Use recovery’s package-install or sideload function to apply it before starting LineageOS for the first time.
- Only then reboot into LineageOS and complete setup.
If you already completed a first boot without GApps, do not assume that installing a package from Android will repair the installation. The documented recovery route is to factory-reset, sideload the compatible package, and boot again. A factory reset erases user data, so make a backup first. Follow the exact wipe and reinstall sequence in the device guide; a generic sequence can be unsafe on a particular model.
When setup errors involve an old Google account
LineageOS notes that failing to remove Google accounts before replacing stock Android can leave Factory Reset Protection active. That can produce unusual setup or activation errors after the change. It is an installation-state issue, not a universal explanation for a bank’s later integrity refusal. If you are still at the stock-ROM stage, remove the accounts using the manufacturer’s documented process before wiping; if the phone is already in a setup loop, use the exact recovery procedure for that model rather than repeatedly wiping at random.
Check Play Store certification separately from Play Protect scanning
Open the Play Store and locate its certification status in the current settings or “About” screen. Menu wording changes between Play Store releases, but the status normally appears under a label such as Play Protect certification. Record the exact result and any accompanying message before clearing data or changing security settings.

Certification is not malware scanning
Google uses “Play Protect” for more than one function. Harmful-app scanning examines installed software; device certification determines whether Google recognizes the device as eligible to include Google apps. Disabling malware scanning does not turn an uncertified device into a certified one, and it removes a security protection without addressing the certification decision.
Google’s guidance states: “Only Play Protect certified devices are eligible to include Google apps, like the Google Play Store app.” It also warns that uncertified devices may miss system or app updates and that apps and features may not work correctly.

Google lists an unlocked bootloader, a modified Android operating system, and root among common reasons a device fails certification. A standard LineageOS installation can therefore be functional yet still outside the state Google expects for certification. The result is a policy decision, not proof that the operating system is damaged.
- Unlocked bootloader: many LineageOS installations require this state so the system can be installed and updated.
- Modified OS: replacing the manufacturer’s software changes the software and verification state that Google evaluates.
- Root or system modifications: root, framework changes, or other alterations can affect the signals used by services and apps.
- Out-of-date components: an old build, firmware, or Google component can create additional compatibility failures even when certification is not the primary issue.
Do not treat a clean-looking Play Store screen as a guarantee that every app will accept the phone. Certification and an individual app’s security policy are different decisions.
Repair missing or outdated Google Play services
A message that Google Play services cannot be found or is outdated is a component problem, not automatically a certification problem. In Android settings, inspect the app list for Google Play services and verify that it is installed and enabled. Then check for its update in the Play Store, if the store is available, or through the update path supported by the package and device guide.

- If the entry is missing, the GApps installation may be incomplete or incompatible; return to the device guide rather than sideloading an unrelated APK.
- If it is disabled, re-enable it and reboot. A disabled service can make several Google apps appear broken at once.
- If it is present but outdated, update the service and the Play Store, then reboot and test again.
- If updates repeatedly fail, record the Android release, GApps package, and exact error. Clearing data or repeatedly installing different packages can make diagnosis harder and may require a clean reinstall.
Google account sign-in, push notifications, location features, and app licensing can all depend on Play services. A bank may also use it, but a bank’s refusal still needs to be diagnosed under its own policy after the service is healthy.

Understand why a banking app can reject an unrooted LineageOS phone
There is no universal LineageOS switch that makes every banking app compatible. The app developer chooses which device, boot, integrity, region, and software conditions to require. The bank may reject a phone even when no root manager is installed and Google apps work normally.
Play Integrity signals are broader than a root check
Android exposes integrity verdicts to apps. LineageOS’s FAQ explains that some devices provide bootloader-unlock and verified-boot (verity) status to Android during boot, and that LineageOS does not intentionally remove those signals. Its device-support requirements also forbid altering Play Integrity validation responses. The project’s explanation is direct: “We don’t purposefully remove those flags, as it isn’t our place to lie about security features.”
Google’s Play Integrity documentation describes stronger verdicts for Android 13 and later as requiring additional device-integrity and security-update conditions. An app can therefore distinguish among a locked, verified manufacturer system; an unlocked device running a modified system; and a rooted or otherwise altered environment. The exact verdict and threshold selected by a bank are not visible from the Play Store certification page.
Collect the details a bank support team needs
A useful report includes the bank’s name and country, phone manufacturer and model, device codename, official or unofficial LineageOS build, Android and LineageOS versions, GApps package and version, root or modification status, whether the bootloader is unlocked, and the exact error text or code. Include whether the failure occurs at launch, during registration, at biometric setup, or only during authentication. Without these details, “LineageOS is not working” is too broad to diagnose.

Ask the bank directly whether it supports the model, Android version, unlocked bootloaders, and aftermarket operating systems. If it offers an official browser or other access method, use that only as a bank-approved alternative; do not assume that any web login has the same features or protections as the app.
Do not relock the bootloader as a generic certification fix
Relocking sounds like a way to restore a stock security state, but it can permanently prevent a device from booting if the installed system is not exactly what the bootloader expects. LineageOS warns: “Few devices allow for it and even less work properly after that. Relocking can result in actual unusable devices, so be warned!”
Never issue a relock command merely because the Play Store says “Device is not certified” or a bank refuses to start. Consider any bootloader operation only when the manufacturer and the exact LineageOS device guide explicitly document that state and procedure, including the required stock images, keys, and rollback path. The available official guidance does not establish that relocking restores access to any particular bank app.
A safe end-to-end troubleshooting procedure
- Write down the symptom. Copy the exact Play Store, Play services, setup, or banking-app message. Take a screenshot if the message disappears.
- Identify the software state. Record model, codename, official or unofficial build, LineageOS version, Android version, GApps package and version, bootloader state, root status, and recent updates.
- Separate Google components from certification. Check whether Play services is installed, enabled, and current. Separately check the Play Store’s certification result.
- Validate installation timing. If GApps were added after first boot or do not match the guide, back up data and use the documented factory-reset, sideload-before-first-boot route.
- Test without destructive changes. Reboot after a supported update, then test the Play Store and the affected app. Do not stack random APKs, root modules, or “certification fixer” scripts.
- Contact the app owner for an app-only refusal. Provide the full device and error details and ask whether aftermarket Android, an unlocked bootloader, or your region is unsupported.
- Stop before risky bootloader changes. Do not relock, wipe partitions, or flash stock firmware unless the exact device documentation says the operation is safe and you have a verified backup.
Common approaches that fail—and what to do instead
| Attempt | Why it does not solve the stated problem | Safer replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Turn off Play Protect scanning | Scanning and device certification are separate features | Read the certification status and investigate the device state |
| Install any GApps package after setup | Version, architecture, and installation timing must match the guide; late installation can require a clean reset | Use the supported package before first boot, or follow the documented reinstall route |
| Assume “not rooted” means every bank will work | Apps can evaluate bootloader, verified-boot, update, and other integrity signals | Ask the bank which states it supports and preserve the exact error |
| Relock the bootloader immediately | An incompatible relock can make the phone unusable and is not proven to restore certification | Leave it alone unless the exact manufacturer and device guide authorize the procedure |
| Clear every Google app’s data repeatedly | This can erase account state without fixing an incompatible package or policy rejection | First determine whether the failure is package, service, certification, or app policy |
When a clean reinstall is justified
A reinstall is appropriate when the GApps package is for the wrong Android release or architecture, was installed after the first boot, or the current Google components are incomplete and the device guide specifies a clean route. Back up photos, messages, authenticator data, and recovery codes first. Confirm that you can retrieve any encryption or account credentials required after a factory reset.
Recommended Free Tools
A clean reinstall is not a justified response to every bank error. If Play services works, Play Store certification is known, and only one bank rejects the device, wiping the phone may simply reproduce the same policy decision while destroying data. Ask the bank first and check whether its published support terms exclude unlocked bootloaders or aftermarket systems.

What can and cannot be guaranteed
You can reliably correct a mismatched or incorrectly timed GApps installation by following the exact device guide, and you can distinguish a missing Play services package from a certification message. You cannot guarantee Play Protect certification on a modified operating system, and you cannot guarantee that an unnamed bank will accept a particular LineageOS build. Those decisions depend on Google’s certification rules, device security signals, and the individual app’s policy.
If the phone is needed for time-sensitive banking, keep an officially supported device or the bank’s approved web channel available while you obtain a definitive answer from the bank. Do not weaken boot security or run unverified modification scripts in an attempt to force an integrity verdict.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Google Apps required for LineageOS to work?
No. LineageOS can boot and run without GApps. They are optional, but the package must match the Android version and architecture and should be installed before the first LineageOS boot when the device guide requires it.
Will disabling Play Protect make an uncertified device certified?
No. Malware scanning and Play Protect device certification are separate features. Disabling scanning does not change the certification result.
Why does my bank reject the phone even though it is not rooted?
A banking app can evaluate bootloader state, verified-boot signals, operating-system changes, security updates, and other integrity verdicts. Root status alone does not determine the result.
Should I relock the bootloader?
Not as a general fix. LineageOS warns that relocking can make some devices unusable. Only follow a relock procedure explicitly supported for your exact device and software state.
