Personal Gmail accounts
Google’s current availability information says that personal Gmail use without a paid plan is limited to the United States. That is an availability rule, not a statement that every US account will have the control immediately. Rollouts, account eligibility, and local availability can change.
Google AI and Workspace plans
Eligible Google AI plans and eligible Google Workspace editions can use Help me write in supported languages globally, subject to Google’s current terms and the organization’s settings. A work or school address may be on an edition that does not include the feature, or an administrator may need to enable or permit Gemini features.
Check the account you are actually using
- Open Gmail and identify the profile shown in the account switcher.
- For a personal address, compare the account’s country and plan with Google’s current Gemini-in-Gmail availability page.
- For a work or school address, ask the administrator which Workspace edition is assigned and whether Gemini features are allowed for your organizational unit.
- If you have multiple accounts open, test the account that should be eligible instead of assuming Gmail is using the intended profile.
Do not treat an eligible plan as a permanent guarantee. Google can change rollout status or local availability, and the public help pages do not provide a per-account activation date.

Google lists Help me write availability for the web, iOS, and Android. The relevant availability documentation lists English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. The language requirement can apply to the device or account experience, so an unsupported device language can make a feature appear to be missing even when the plan is eligible.
Check the language setting
- Look at the language used by your device and Gmail interface.
- Use one of Google’s currently listed supported languages if your account and plan are otherwise eligible.
- Restart the Gmail session after changing the language: reload the browser on a computer, or close and reopen Gmail on a phone or tablet.
Language availability is subject to change. If the feature remains absent, verify the current Google availability page for your account and region rather than relying on an old screenshot or a language list copied from another site.

Check the platform
Test the platform covered by your account’s eligibility. The web version runs in a desktop browser; mobile support is provided in the Gmail app for Android and iOS. A missing mobile control does not prove that the web version is broken, and a browser problem does not prove that mobile access is unavailable.
Find Help me write in the right place
Computer browser
- Open Gmail in your browser.
- Click Compose, open a reply, or open an existing draft.
- Inspect the bottom area of the compose window. Google places the Help me write prompt bar there.
- If the prompt bar is not visible, look for the Help me write control in the compose interface and click it to open the prompt.
Looking at the inbox, a message-reading view, or a separate Google service will not show the compose control. The feature is part of the draft or reply flow.
Android phone or tablet
- Open the Gmail app and tap Compose, or open a message and start a reply.
- Look inside the compose window for Help me write.
- Use the control to create a draft or refine text already entered in the message.
iPhone or iPad
- Open the Gmail app and create a new message or reply.
- Inspect the compose window for the Help me write option.
- If the button is present but inactive, follow the retry and app-restart steps below.
The exact icon placement can change as Google updates Gmail, but the documented context is the same: Help me write is accessed while composing, replying, or editing a draft.
Fix a missing control step by step
- Verify the account. Confirm whether you are using personal Gmail or a managed Workspace account, and check the applicable Google AI or Workspace plan.
- Verify country availability. Personal Gmail without a paid plan is currently listed as US-only by Google. Workspace and Google AI access has its own eligibility conditions.
- Verify language. Use a currently supported language listed by Google for the relevant account and platform.
- Open the correct compose context. On a computer, create a compose window, reply, or draft and inspect the bottom prompt area. On mobile, inspect the compose window in the Gmail app.
- Retry later if the control is unavailable. Google specifically notes that a Help me write button may sometimes be impossible to select temporarily.
- Refresh the session. Reload Gmail in the browser. On Android or iOS, close and reopen the Gmail app, then start a fresh compose or reply.
- Escalate managed accounts. If the account is controlled by an employer or school, ask the administrator to verify edition eligibility and organization settings.
These steps target the documented causes. They do not establish that your mailbox is damaged, and reinstalling Gmail is not a required first step in Google’s guidance.
Fix Help me write when it is visible but does not work
The button cannot be selected
Do not repeatedly tap or click a disabled control. Google’s mobile troubleshooting guidance says: Sometimes, you may not be able to select the Help me write button. When this happens, try again later.
Wait and retry in the same compose flow. If the problem persists, close and reopen Gmail on mobile or reload Gmail on a computer before testing again.

The prompt accepts text but produces no draft
- Reload Gmail if you are using a computer browser.
- Close and reopen the Gmail app if you are using Android or iOS.
- Open a new compose or reply window rather than reusing a stale draft session.
- Enter a short, clear request and submit it once; repeated submissions can make it harder to tell whether the service has recovered.
- If generation still fails, retry later. Google does not publish a guaranteed recovery time or a success rate for failed Help me write requests.
The generated text is incomplete, inaccurate, or inappropriate
A successful response is not automatically a send-ready email. Google warns that AI-generated suggestions can be inaccurate or inappropriate. Read the entire draft, check names, dates, recipients, promises, attachments, tone, and confidentiality, and edit it yourself before sending. Remove any invented details instead of treating fluent wording as evidence that the content is correct.
The feature works on one device but not another
Use the device-specific location and restart action: inspect the bottom of the compose window and reload the browser on a computer; inspect the compose window and close and reopen the Gmail app on Android or iOS. Then recheck language and platform eligibility. Different behavior across devices can reflect rollout or platform availability rather than a damaged account.
Work and school accounts need an administrator check
Workspace access is not controlled solely by the end user. The organization’s edition, licensing, rollout stage, and administrative settings can determine whether Gemini features appear. Google also documents a Workspace Experiments path for some early-access contexts, which is separate from assuming that every Workspace mailbox has the production feature.
What to give your administrator
- The exact account address and whether the issue occurs on web, Android, iOS, or all platforms.
- Your device language and the language used in Gmail.
- Whether Help me write is absent, unselectable, or failing after prompt submission.
- The approximate time of the failure and whether another eligible account works on the same device.
- The Workspace edition or Google AI plan, if known.
Ask the administrator to confirm that your account is in an eligible edition and organizational unit and that Gemini features are enabled. If those checks pass but the control remains unavailable, use Gmail Help for account-specific support; Google’s public documentation does not identify the cause of every individual-account failure.
Compare the availability axes instead of guessing
When two Gmail accounts behave differently, compare the variables that Google actually uses for eligibility. Start with account type: a personal Gmail address and a managed Workspace address follow different access rules. Next compare the plan: an eligible Google AI or Workspace plan is distinct from personal Gmail without a paid plan. Then check country and language, because availability is not universal for every account or interface language. - Use the same supported language and the same platform where the problem was first observed.
- Start a brand-new compose or reply rather than relying on an old draft.
- Check the documented location: the bottom prompt area on a computer or the compose window in the mobile app.
- If the control is present, try one short prompt. If it is not selectable or generation fails, apply the platform-specific reload or app-restart step once.
- Repeat on another supported platform only if you need to distinguish an account issue from a device or interface issue.
Do not infer a permanent outage from one failed attempt. Google publishes no official failure rate, success rate, or guaranteed recovery time for Help me write. A later retry can therefore be meaningful, while repeated immediate submissions add little diagnostic information.
