To fix ghosting on an LED TV, first identify what you see: trails behind moving objects, a double image, or a mark that remains after the picture changes. Those symptoms can have different causes, so test picture settings, the source and connection, or the TV’s diagnostic image as appropriate before buying anything.
Identify which kind of ghosting you see
- Motion trails: faint smears or trails appear behind moving objects, especially in fast scenes.
- A double image: the picture appears duplicated continuously or on a particular channel or input. This can point to a broadcast, connection, or source issue.
- A lingering mark: a logo, game display, or other shape remains faintly visible after you switch to different content. This may be temporary image retention or longer-lasting burn-in.
These symptoms should not be treated as one fault. TCL describes motion ghosting as trails behind moving objects; LG distinguishes a prior image that sticks after content changes from double-image problems; Panasonic notes that image retention can occasionally occur on LCD/LED displays. Fix trails that appear during motion
Compare picture and motion settings
Choose one fast-moving scene and use it to compare changes. Try a different picture mode, then adjust the TV’s motion or blur controls one at a time. Depending on the model, options may be called Blur Reduction, judder reduction, Motion Clarity, or LED Motion; names and availability vary. TCL advises increasing Blur Reduction or enabling Motion Clarity or LED Motion for fast sports when available. LED Motion may improve clarity but slightly dim the picture. If motion looks unnaturally smooth, lower or turn off motion processing instead. Check the manual for the exact model’s menu names.

Use the mode that suits the source
For a console or PC, Game Mode prioritizes responsiveness and may change motion processing. For movies or sports on that same HDMI input, a Movie or Standard mode with Game Mode off may allow more motion processing. Settings can be stored separately for each HDMI input, so check the input where the problem occurs. These model-specific suggestions come from TCL Support.

Check whether an external source is causing the problem
- Play the same or similar content in a built-in TV app, then from the external box, console, PC, or set-top box. Try another app or source if possible.
- If the problem occurs only with one external device, check that device’s video-output settings and the TV’s settings for that input.
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable and try another HDMI port.
- Confirm the source’s resolution and refresh rate are supported by both the TV and the connected device.
If you need to replace a cable, TCL recommends a High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K and higher frame rates, depending on the equipment. A cable purchase is relevant when the issue is limited to an HDMI source and the connection or signal format is in question; it is not an established fix for panel-level motion trails or image processing.
Diagnose a double image with a picture test
On supported LG TVs, run Picture Test from the Support settings. If the test image looks correct while a broadcast or external source is doubled, the signal or service is a likely place to investigate. If the test image itself looks wrong, contact LG support. Handle an image that remains after content changes
Distinguish temporary retention from a persistent defect
Switch to varied content and see whether the faint mark fades. Static logos and game HUDs, along with high brightness or contrast, can contribute to image retention, according to Panasonic UK Support. LG says image retention often fades after a short time, while burn-in lasts much longer and remains visible across other content.

Use only maintenance features intended for your model
Use only maintenance features documented for the exact TV. LG’s Pixel Refresher and logo-brightness features apply to supported models, including applicable LG OLED TVs; they are not a universal remedy for LED TVs. If a mark persists after varied content or the model’s specified maintenance, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair service. Panasonic also recommends support if image retention persists after varied content or built-in maintenance.

Reset settings and decide when to get help
If you have changed several picture options and cannot tell which helped, TCL suggests resetting picture settings and adjusting them gradually. A power cycle and a check for available software updates are also reasonable troubleshooting steps. If the built-in picture test shows the defect, or a persistent mark does not resolve with normal varied content and applicable manufacturer maintenance, contact the TV maker or an authorized repair service.
