The hexadecimal code is generic. The preceding HTTP status, MP name, certificate messages, proxy errors, boundary information, and file-system events identify the actual cause.
Start with ccmsetup.log and the complete failure block. Do not reinstall a distribution point (DP) until evidence shows that the DP itself, its content, or its role installation is broken.

What GetDPLocations is trying to do
During client installation or upgrade, CCMSetup contacts the management point and sends a location request. The MP evaluates the client’s site, boundary, boundary group, protocol, and available content sources, then returns a usable location for the Configuration Manager client files.
- Management point: Handles client communication, policy, site information, and location requests.
- Distribution point: Hosts and serves client-installation and deployment content.
- CCMSetup: The bootstrap installer that finds the files and starts the client installation.
A DP can be healthy while this request fails because the client cannot reach the MP, authenticate, validate its certificate, receive a valid response, or qualify for a DP. Windows client setup normally uses a DP, but it can fall back to the MP or use an alternative source. Microsoft’s site-system guidance describes these source options.

Find the useful evidence in the logs
On the affected computer, start with:
C:WindowsCCMSetupLogsccmsetup.log
The installation directory can be customized. Microsoft identifies ccmsetup.log as the main log for client setup, upgrade, and removal activity. See the Configuration Manager log reference.
Capture roughly 20–40 lines before and after the error, including:
- the MP hostname or FQDN;
- whether the request uses HTTP or HTTPS;
- the HTTP status code and status text;
Failed to send location request;Failed to receive ccm message response;Failed to find DP locations from MP;- certificate, proxy, DNS, boundary, or authentication messages.
If a client is already installed, also inspect C:WindowsCCMLogsLocationServices.log, ClientLocation.log, and CAS.log. On the MP, review MP_Location.log and other site-system logs, commonly under C:SMS_CCMLogs; customized installations may use another path.
Use the HTTP status code as the decision tree
| Status or symptom | Most likely investigation |
|---|---|
| 401 Unauthorized | Client certificate missing or rejected, Windows or token authentication failure, CMG authentication, or an untrusted certificate chain. Microsoft documents a related missing-client-certificate case with HTTP 401 and this message: update-rollup notes. |
| 403 Forbidden | Authorization, IIS access rules, HTTPS binding, certificate, or CMG configuration. For CMG-specific 403 and certificate checks, use Microsoft’s CMG communication guidance. |
| 404 Not Found | Missing or incorrectly configured MP application or virtual directory, wrong MP URL, IIS permissions, or an unhealthy MP. A documented case of this exact error showed a 404 and was resolved by correcting IIS permissions: case report. |
| 500 or another 5xx | MP-side, IIS, database/provider, or component failure. Correlate the request in IIS logs, MP logs, Windows Event Viewer, and Configuration Manager component status before rebuilding a role. |
| 200 but the same error | Transport succeeded, but the response may be empty, malformed, missing location records, altered by a proxy or inspection product, or followed by a local file-system failure. A Microsoft Q&A case associated HTTP 200 with antivirus interference in C:WindowsCCMSetup: case details. |
Do not interpret 0x80004005 as proof of “access denied,” a dead DP, or a permissions problem without the surrounding evidence.

Test the configured TCP port
HTTP normally uses 80 and HTTPS normally uses 443, although a site can use custom ports. Client-installation properties lists the defaults and syntax.
Test-NetConnection <ManagementPointFQDN> -Port 80 Test-NetConnection <ManagementPointFQDN> -Port 443Run only the command matching the protocol and port in the log. A successful TCP test proves reachability to the port, not a working IIS application, authentication, certificate, or endpoint.
-
Test the client-content endpoint
Use the same hostname, protocol, and custom port as the failing request:
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.Invoke-WebRequest "https://<ManagementPointFQDN>/CCM_Client/ccmsetup.cab" -UseBasicParsingUse
http://when appropriate. The documented MP/CMG workflow uses/CCM_Client/ccmsetup.cab; see Microsoft’s CCMSetup workflow.- 401/403: investigate authentication, authorization, certificates, bindings, or CMG settings.
- 404: investigate the MP/IIS application path and permissions.
- 5xx: investigate the MP and IIS server side.
- TLS or certificate failure: check subject/SAN, trust chain, expiration, revocation, and protocol compatibility.
- 200: the endpoint answered, but the complete location request can still fail.
-
Verify the selected MP and installation parameters
If setup uses:
CCMSetup.exe /mp:<ManagementPointFQDN>confirm the name, hierarchy, protocol, and port. The
/mpoption supplies an initial MP for finding installation content; it does not permanently assign the client to that MP.Rank #3

Check the WinHTTP proxy
netsh winhttp show proxyCCMSetup commonly runs under the Local System context. Browser proxy settings, user credentials, and certificate stores may differ, so a browser test is not conclusive. Also check SSL inspection and endpoint-security traffic filtering.
Check boundaries, boundary groups, and content eligibility
Reaching the MP does not guarantee that the MP can return a usable DP. Verify all of the following:
- The client’s IP subnet, Active Directory site, VPN range, or other network location is represented by a boundary.
- That boundary belongs to the intended boundary group.
- The group has a suitable DP for the client’s protocol and certificate mode.
- The Configuration Manager client package is distributed successfully to that DP.
- The client is not being directed to an obsolete, moved, or decommissioned site system.
A DP’s existence is not the same as DP eligibility. VPN-only failures often indicate missing VPN boundaries or split-tunnel routing; failures after a site migration can indicate an old MP, wrong site code, or incompatible client baseline.
Validate MP, IIS, and certificates
On the MP, correlate the client request in IIS logs and MP_Location.log. Check:
- IIS bindings for the configured HTTP or HTTPS port;
- the MP application and virtual directories;
- the HTTPS certificate’s subject/SAN, expiration, trust chain, and revocation status;
- Schannel, IIS, HTTP Service, and Configuration Manager events;
- MP installation and component logs such as
MPSetup.logandMPMSI.log.
Microsoft’s management-point deployment example explains the relevant role logs. If the evidence shows a damaged or unregistered MP, repair that role before changing the DP.

Check antivirus and endpoint security
Security software can quarantine, lock, or prevent execution of files below:
Recommended Free Tools
C:WindowsCCMSetup
Check for blocks involving ccmsetup.exe, the downloaded client package, ccmcache, or the client MSI. A Microsoft Q&A case resolved this exact symptom by adding an antivirus exclusion for C:WindowsCCMSetup; treat that as a documented, case-specific fix, not a universal recommendation. Apply exclusions only under your security policy and remove any temporary test exclusion when finished.
Special cases: workgroup, Internet, CMG, and Entra-joined clients
Workgroup, cross-forest, and Internet clients cannot rely on every Active Directory-published installation property. Microsoft describes these exceptions in its AD-published property guidance.
Use explicit, supported parameters where required:
CCMSetup.exe /mp:<ManagementPointFQDN> SMSSITECODE=<SiteCode>
For CMG or PKI deployments, confirm trusted roots, client-authentication certificates, CRL reachability or the organization’s approved revocation policy, tenant onboarding, CCMHOSTNAME, and the CMG authentication method. Microsoft Entra-joined devices may need the tenant and authentication information described in the CMG client-installation workflow.
Retry with a controlled source
After correcting the demonstrated cause, retry with a known MP:
Best Value
- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
CCMSetup.exe /mp:<ManagementPointFQDN> SMSSITECODE=<SiteCode> /logon
/logon is appropriate only when you want setup to stop if a client is already installed. For a verified local or network source, bypass DP location lookup with:
CCMSetup.exe /source:"\<SiteServer>SMS_<SiteCode>Client" SMSSITECODE=<SiteCode>
The /source option is documented as an alternative installation source. If HTTPS uses a custom port, specify the actual client communication port:
CCMSetup.exe /mp:<ManagementPointFQDN> CCMHTTPSPORT=<Port> SMSSITECODE=<SiteCode>
Do not add /UsePKICert, /NoCRLCheck, or other certificate-bypass switches merely to suppress an error. Use them only when they match the organization’s documented PKI and Internet-client design.
When should you repair or reinstall the DP?
Consider DP repair only when logs show missing or corrupt DP content, failed DP role installation, a broken DP service or binding, invalid DP certificates, replication/content-distribution failure, or an MP response that specifically identifies that DP as invalid or empty.
An HTTP 401, 403, 404, or MP connection failure points first to the MP, IIS, authentication, DNS, routing, or client security path. Rebuilding a DP will not correct those failures.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Captured the complete
ccmsetup.logfailure block. - Confirmed the MP FQDN resolves to the intended server.
- Tested the correct HTTP/HTTPS port.
- Tested
/CCM_Client/ccmsetup.cabwith the same protocol and hostname. - Mapped the HTTP status to authentication, IIS, MP, or content checks.
- Validated certificate trust, name, expiration, and revocation behavior.
- Confirmed boundary-group membership and an eligible DP with client content.
- Checked WinHTTP proxy, SSL inspection, antivirus, and
C:WindowsCCMSetup. - Used explicit parameters for workgroup, Internet, VPN, CMG, or Entra-joined scenarios.
- Retried only after correcting the evidenced cause, then reviewed the new log block.
