First separate a shallow answer from an incorrect one
Those failures need different fixes. A shallow response may be broadly on topic but omit the background, reasoning, examples, trade-offs or format you needed. An incorrect response states something that is false, outdated, misinterpreted or unsupported. One answer can have both problems, but adding more words to a prompt will not verify a factual claim.

Gemini Apps are generative systems: they predict likely next words from patterns in data and the conversation. That process can produce fluent prose while inventing information or misunderstanding language. Google warns that Gemini Apps may present inaccurate information as fact and may misrepresent how they work, including claims about training, citations or access to fresh information. Fluency, confidence and a neat citation-like sentence are not evidence of correctness.
There is no published Gemini error rate in the official guidance for this problem. Treat each consequential claim as something to evaluate, not as a statistic you can accept or reject based on the tone of the answer.

1. Diagnose exactly what is missing
Before regenerating, identify the failure in one sentence. This prevents a vague request such as “be better” from producing another generic answer.
- Missing context: Gemini did not know your role, location, operating system, audience, deadline or prior decisions.
- Wrong level of detail: It gave a definition when you needed a procedure, or a long overview when you needed a short decision.
- No reasoning or trade-offs: It listed options without explaining when each is appropriate, what it costs or what can go wrong.
- No examples: It described a technique but did not show a worked example, command, calculation or sample output.
- Wrong format: It ignored a request for a table, checklist, numbered steps, JSON or another structure.
- Factual problem: A date, number, attribution, product capability, law, diagnosis or other claim conflicts with a reliable source.
Copy the specific sentence or section that failed. “The answer is shallow” is difficult to act on; “it skipped the maintenance trade-off and gave no example” is actionable.
A quick triage can save several rounds. Mark each sentence as required context, requested analysis, example or factual claim. If the required context is absent, revise the prompt first. If the requested analysis is present but a claim is doubtful, move directly to verification. If the structure is useful but incomplete, ask for the missing section rather than requesting an entirely new answer.

Google documents that you can edit a prompt and regenerate the response. Use that control instead of starting an unrelated conversation when the original context is still useful. Put the information Gemini needs in the revised prompt:
- Goal: what decision, explanation or artifact you need.
- Background: facts Gemini should assume, such as your skill level, region, device, existing setup or constraints.
- Scope: what to include and what to leave out.
- Audience: who will read or use the result.
- Output format: headings, table columns, numbered steps, code, word limit or another explicit structure.
- Evaluation criteria: the dimensions to compare, such as cost, setup time, reliability, privacy or maintenance.
- Uncertainty handling: ask Gemini to identify assumptions, dates that may have changed and points it cannot verify.
This structure improves the chance of a complete response; it does not guarantee that the content is true. Include only information you are comfortable placing in the conversation, especially when the task involves personal, work or connected-app data.
Goal: [the decision or result I need]
Context: [relevant facts, location, version, audience and constraints]
Task: [the precise work Gemini should perform]
Include: [required sections, examples, calculations or comparisons]
Format: [for example, a table followed by numbered steps]
Check: identify assumptions and flag claims that require independent verificationReplace every bracketed item with real information before sending the prompt. If you need a comparison, name the criteria rather than asking Gemini to “compare” without direction. If you need instructions, state the starting point and the desired end state. For a long task, list the required sections in the order you want them; that gives you an easy checklist for reviewing the result.
3. Regenerate once with targeted feedback
After the revised answer appears, point to the missing part and specify the correction. A useful follow-up describes the defect, the required change and any verification boundary:

Your answer skipped the trade-offs. Compare these three options on cost, setup time and maintenance. Keep the comparison in a table, explain which user each option suits, and flag any point you cannot verify.For a procedural answer, request the exact decision points rather than “more detail”: ask what the user should see after each step, what can cause a different result and how to recover. For an explanation, ask for one concrete example and one counterexample. For a summary, identify the source, date range and maximum length.
One focused iteration is usually easier to assess than a chain of increasingly broad prompts. If the second draft still omits the same requirement, change the format or supply the missing context explicitly instead of assuming Gemini inferred it. Do not keep adding stylistic instructions when the real problem is a disputed fact; style and evidence are separate jobs.
4. Verify factual claims outside the generated answer
Prompt revision can improve coverage, but it cannot establish whether a claim is true. Google’s guidance says to use Google and other resources to check information presented as fact. Apply that advice claim by claim, prioritizing statements that could cause harm or cost money.
Use Gemini’s web-checking control as a lead
When available, Gemini’s Google button can help locate related or conflicting web material. Treat the results as leads. Open the underlying pages, read the surrounding context and check whether the page actually supports the sentence Gemini wrote. The web pages returned by the feature can themselves be wrong, incomplete or outdated, and Google’s community guidance warns that the double-check feature can mislead.
Prefer authoritative, current sources
- For laws, regulations and government benefits, check the responsible government authority and the applicable jurisdiction.
- For medical information, check a recognized health authority or a qualified clinician.
- For financial or tax claims, check the relevant regulator, tax authority or licensed professional.
- For software behavior, check the current vendor documentation, release notes and your installed version.
- For research claims, read the original paper or institution’s publication rather than relying on a summary.
Compare the publication date, geographic scope, definitions and exceptions. A statement can be accurate in one country, product edition or time period and wrong in another. If two credible sources disagree, preserve that disagreement in your decision rather than asking Gemini to choose confidently.
For an efficient check, split a paragraph into individual claims. Record the claim, the source you checked, the source date and whether the source confirms, qualifies or contradicts it. This prevents one relevant-looking link from being treated as support for every sentence in a generated paragraph. For high-impact decisions, have another person or a qualified professional review both the claim and your interpretation of the source.
Ask Gemini to expose, not settle, uncertainty
You can ask it to list the claims that need checking, state the assumptions behind a calculation or separate sourced facts from its own inference. That makes verification more efficient, but the resulting list is still generated text and must be checked.

5. Try another available model or draft when the interface offers one
Google’s current Gemini Apps help documentation describes a model selector for signed-in users. Model names and availability can change, so use the choices displayed in your account rather than treating one model as universally best. A different available model may handle a particular task differently, but switching models is not a substitute for source checking.
Some latest responses also offer alternate drafts. Reviewing those drafts can reveal a clearer structure or a missing detail without rewriting the entire prompt. Google notes that alternate drafts are unavailable for responses generated using apps. If the control is absent, that limitation may explain why you cannot access it; it is not evidence that the original response is reliable.
When comparing drafts, keep the same factual checks. Choose a draft for clarity or completeness only after verifying its consequential claims. A model switch is a low-effort presentation experiment, whereas opening authoritative sources is the higher-effort step that addresses accuracy.
6. Use custom instructions for recurring style preferences
Custom instructions can save repeated formatting requests. Google gives examples such as asking Gemini to start with a short summary or use bullet points. They are useful for presentation preferences, preferred level of detail and recurring audience information.
Do not treat them as an accuracy setting. Google cautions that instructions to forget or avoid topics do not always work perfectly. A standing instruction such as “never mention uncertainty” could make an answer look more certain while hiding important limitations. Keep verification requirements in the individual prompt when the claim matters, and review the custom-instruction text whenever Gemini behaves unexpectedly.

If a response remains inaccurate or unsafe, use the feedback controls attached to that response. A signed-in user can submit a reason or explanation. Describe the specific claim, why it is wrong or risky and, when useful, what a reliable source says. Clear feedback is more useful than a general complaint that the answer was bad.
Review the material that will be included before sending feedback. Google says the associated conversation, and potentially uploaded files, images or connected-app content, is added to feedback. Remove or avoid sensitive information when the feedback flow allows that choice, and do not submit confidential material merely to illustrate a minor formatting issue. If the response contains private data about someone else, consider whether reporting it through that conversation is appropriate before proceeding.

When an explanation is too shallow
Explain [topic] to [audience]. Start with a two-sentence summary, then cover [three required aspects]. Include one worked example, one common mistake and the trade-offs between [options]. Use headings and keep the answer under [length]. Mark assumptions and topics that need current-source verification.The request names the audience, structure and evidence boundaries, so “more detail” has a measurable meaning.
When a recommendation contains unsupported facts

When generated code looks plausible
Review this code for [language and version]. Explain the intended behavior, list security and edge-case risks, and propose tests for normal, boundary and failure inputs. Common mistakes that make the problem worse
- Asking for confidence instead of evidence: “Answer decisively” can suppress useful uncertainty without improving truth.
- Accepting a citation-shaped answer: A link or source name still needs to be opened and checked against the exact claim.
- Changing too many variables at once: If you alter the prompt, model, format and source material together, you cannot tell which change helped.
- Repeating an unverified answer: A generated statement does not become reliable because it appeared in several drafts.

Google says not to rely on Gemini Apps for medical, legal, financial or other professional advice. Use the answer, at most, to formulate questions for a qualified professional or locate official information, then make the decision from authoritative guidance. Responses about people may also be inaccurate and should be double-checked before you repeat or act on them.
Escalate immediately when an answer could affect health or safety, legal rights, immigration status, employment, substantial money, privacy or another person’s reputation. Do not let a confident tone, a model switch or a generated list of sources substitute for expert review.
A repeatable workflow
- Classify the defect: write down whether the problem is missing depth, wrong format, missing trade-offs or a factual error.
- Edit the existing prompt: add goal, context, constraints, audience and a specific deliverable.
- Regenerate: inspect the new response against the requirements rather than judging its tone.
- Give one targeted correction: name the omitted section or unsupported claim and request a precise change.
- Verify independently: open authoritative, current sources for every consequential factual statement.
- Use available alternatives: compare another shown model or alternate draft for clarity, while keeping the same fact checks.
- Report a persistent problem: submit feedback only after reviewing what conversation and attachments will be shared.
This workflow addresses presentation and evidence separately. That separation is the key: a better prompt can make an answer more useful, but only independent checking can tell you whether an important claim is dependable.
