If Gemini will not control your smart-home devices, first identify which Gemini experience you are using. Google’s mobile-app controls require the Gemini app on Android, the same personal Google Account used in Google Home, and an active Google Home connection. The separate Gemini for Home voice assistant has different device support and regional rollout rules.
Work through the checks in this order: confirm the app, account and activity settings; connect Google Home; verify the device’s power, Wi-Fi, Home assignment and firmware; repair the partner integration and sync; simplify the device name; then confirm that the requested action is supported. Do not switch your entire home to Gemini for Home just to troubleshoot one failed command.

First, identify which Gemini is failing
“Gemini” can mean two different smart-home control paths. Treating them as interchangeable leads to wasted troubleshooting and, in one case, an irreversible assistant switch.

The steps below begin with the mobile-app integration because it has a clear account-connection workflow. If you are speaking to a speaker or display, use the Gemini for Home checks in the later section as well.

1. Confirm the app, account and conversation surface
Use the Gemini mobile app on Android
Google’s documented Google Home connection is for the Gemini mobile app on Android. A request made in a browser, Google Messages or a Live chat will not invoke that integration, even if the same Google Account works in Google Home.
Open the Gemini app directly and start a new conversation. If Gemini does not recognize a home-control request, address the integration explicitly by including @Google Home in the request. For example, ask Gemini to turn on a uniquely named light and include the integration mention if it does not offer to connect.
Use the same personal Google Account
Sign in to Gemini with the personal Google Account that owns or has been invited to the relevant home in Google Home. Work, school or another account can show a different set of homes and devices, or no devices at all. In both apps, inspect the profile picture before troubleshooting hardware.
Keep Activity must be enabled for the mobile-app integration. If it is disabled, turn it back on in the account activity settings, then close and reopen Gemini before trying the command again.
Do not infer a device fault from a surface mismatch
If the same command works in Google Home but fails in a web Gemini session, the device is probably not the immediate problem; the request is being sent through an unsupported surface. Move the test to the Android Gemini app before changing device setup.
2. Connect Google Home to Gemini
A Gemini installation does not automatically mean that Gemini can see your Google Home devices. The Home connection grants access to the homes and devices available to that account, including devices you add or share later.

- Start with a simple supported request. In the Android Gemini app, ask for a basic action such as turning a named light on or off.
- Follow the connection prompt. When Gemini asks to connect Google Home, approve the connection and complete the account flow.
- Retry the same request. Use the exact device name shown in Google Home rather than a nickname you have not saved there.
- Verify the account if no prompt appears. Check the Gemini profile and Google Home profile again. An already-connected but wrong account can look like a connection failure.
Connection provides access to eligible devices; it does not make every device type or every action available. A device that is absent from Google Home must be fixed there before Gemini can control it.
3. Check whether the device is healthy in Google Home
Open Google Home and test the device there. This divides the problem into two useful branches:
- Device missing from Google Home: troubleshoot setup, partner compatibility, account sharing or synchronization.
- Device visible in Google Home but the action fails: troubleshoot power, network status, naming, command support or the specific action.
Confirm power and network connectivity
Check that the device is powered on and responsive. For a mains-powered product, inspect its indicator or local controls; for a battery device, verify that it has charge. Make sure the device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network used by the home setup where that requirement applies. A device that has fallen offline can remain listed in Google Home while refusing commands.
Confirm the Home assignment
In Google Home, open the device details and verify that it belongs to the Home you are currently using. A device assigned to a different home may be visible under another household but not respond when Gemini interprets the request against the active one.
Install the manufacturer’s latest firmware
Check the device maker’s app or update screen for firmware updates. Google’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls for the manufacturer’s latest firmware. Apply the update, wait for the device to return online, then test it in Google Home before testing Gemini.

Some products require initial setup or authorization in the manufacturer’s app as well as Google Home. If the device was reset, replaced, or moved to another Wi-Fi network, redo the manufacturer setup first, then add or link it in Google Home. Do not assume that seeing a product in one app means the other app has a valid connection.

4. Repair partner compatibility and synchronize devices
Check whether the service is linked
In Google Home, open Add, choose Link apps or services, and look under Works with Google. Confirm that the service used by the device is listed and linked to the intended account. If it is missing, the device may not have a supported Google Home integration, or the partner account may be different from the one you expect.
Reconnect the partner account when devices changed
If you added, renamed or moved a device in the partner app and it has not appeared in Google Home, verify the partner account first. Reconnect the service if necessary, then allow the account-linking flow to finish. Reconnecting can refresh the device inventory without requiring a new Gemini connection.
Run a device synchronization
After correcting the link, ask Google Home to synchronize devices. The supported phrase is Hey Google, sync my devices. Google also supports device-type synchronization commands, which can help when only a category such as lights or thermostats is stale. Wait for synchronization to finish, then look for the device in Google Home and test a direct control.

If synchronization reports no change, compare the device list in the partner app with Google Home. A device that is not present in the partner account, is assigned to another household, or is not supported by the integration cannot be restored by repeating the sync command.
5. Make the device name easy for Gemini to recognize
Voice and text interpretation becomes less reliable when names overlap with rooms, contain punctuation or differ only by a number. Google recommends simple device names without numbers, special characters or room names, and recommends avoiding similar names.
Use one distinctive name
Rename a light from something ambiguous such as “Desk light 2” to a short, unique name such as “Reading lamp.” Avoid giving a device the same name as its room, a routine or another device. If you have several similar products, use clearly different nouns rather than a sequence that differs only by a digit.

Test the saved name exactly
After renaming, wait for Google Home to update, then issue a direct request such as “Turn on Reading lamp.” Do not combine the first test with a scene, routine or multiple devices. Once the direct command works, add complexity one element at a time.

Remove stale duplicates
If Google Home shows an old entry and a new entry for the same physical product, rename or remove the obsolete entry according to the partner service’s procedure. Duplicate names can cause Gemini to select the wrong device or ask for clarification.

A failed command is not always a connection failure. Gemini can control only the actions exposed by the Google Home integration and the partner service. Some security-device actions are intentionally unavailable. Google specifically states that Gemini cannot perform certain actions such as unlocking a door; for unsupported requests it may open Google Home instead of carrying out the action.
Separate ordinary convenience controls from security controls
Use Gemini for convenience tasks such as a supported light, plug or other compatible device action. Do not rely on it for safety- or security-critical decisions, and do not interpret a refusal as evidence that the device is offline.
Try a lower-risk, basic action
If a complex request fails, test a simple on/off command on the same device. A basic action working while a security-sensitive or advanced action fails indicates a capability boundary rather than a broken account connection.
Use Google Home when Gemini redirects you
When Gemini opens Google Home for a request, read that behavior as a compatibility signal. Complete the action manually in Google Home if appropriate, then check the partner service’s supported capabilities instead of repeatedly rephrasing the same unsupported command.
7. Diagnose the failure by its pattern

8. Gemini for Home voice assistant: separate checks
Gemini for Home is a voice-assistant product for compatible Google speakers and displays, not simply a different wording mode inside the Gemini mobile app. Its supported services page directs users to check partner compatibility in Google Home, and availability depends on region and language.
Check rollout eligibility before changing the home
Early access is rolling out to selected languages and countries. If Gemini for Home is not offered for your account or location, repeated device resets will not make it appear. Confirm that your language and country are included in the current rollout and that the partner service is supported.
Do not switch assistants as a first fix
Switching a home to Gemini for Home cannot be reversed to Google Assistant. Make the reversible checks first: account, device visibility, partner link, synchronization, naming and supported action. Consider a switch only when you deliberately want the new assistant and have confirmed that your devices and language are eligible.
Keep the two troubleshooting paths separate
A mobile-app connection problem does not prove that a compatible speaker or display is faulty, and a voice-assistant rollout limitation does not prove that the Gemini Android app lacks access. Record which device heard the request and which app or assistant produced the response before changing settings.
9. A clean recovery sequence
When several variables are wrong, use this order so that each test has a clear result:
- Open Gemini on Android, not the web, Messages or Live chat.
- Confirm the personal Google Account matches the account used in Google Home.
- Enable Keep Activity and restart the Gemini app.
- Connect Google Home by issuing a simple request and accepting the prompt.
- Open Google Home and verify the target device is powered, online, in the correct Home and updated.
- Check Add → Link apps or services → Works with Google for the partner integration.
- Reconnect the partner account if the device was recently added, renamed or moved.
- Run
Hey Google, sync my devicesand wait for the inventory to refresh. - Give the device a short, unique name without numbers, special characters or room names.
- Test one direct, supported action; include
@Google Homein Gemini if it does not invoke the integration. - If the action still fails, determine whether it is a security-sensitive or otherwise unsupported capability before changing hardware.
What not to do
- Do not buy a new smart plug, router or device as the first response. Google’s documented causes are account, integration, setup, synchronization, naming and capability issues.
- Do not reset every device at once. A reset can erase working configuration while leaving an account or compatibility problem untouched.
- Do not keep switching accounts during a test. Record the account and Home that contain the device, then use those consistently.
- Do not treat a refusal to unlock a door as a malfunction. Some security actions are deliberately unavailable.
- Do not switch to Gemini for Home merely to change the result. Rollout limits apply, and the home switch cannot be undone.
When the problem is ready for escalation
Escalate to the device manufacturer or Google support after you can document a consistent, reproducible failure: the Android Gemini app and correct personal account are being used; Keep Activity is enabled; Google Home is connected; the device is powered, online, correctly assigned and updated; the partner service is linked and synchronized; the name is distinctive; and the requested action is supported.
Include the device model, partner service, Home name, exact command, whether the device works directly in Google Home, and any error text. Those details distinguish a partner integration issue from a Gemini surface or capability limitation.
