If Gears of War: E-Day is stuttering, crashing, or running at low FPS on PC, start by checking whether it is installed on an SSD, then separate shader-compilation hitches from a broader performance or stability problem. The game is in early access, with public launch scheduled for October 6, 2026, so some troubleshooting advice below is explicitly beta-era; verify current requirements and patches before treating it as a launch-build fix.
Start with the symptom and the installation drive
If loading problems, missing assets, stuttering, and crashes happen together, check storage before changing graphics settings. The official beta FAQ said mechanical hard drives were unsupported and could cause those problems. That is beta guidance, not a substitute for checking the current launch requirements, but an SSD is the first thing to verify if the game is on a mechanical HDD. Check the drive for reported errors as well.

- Find the drive where E-Day is installed using the Xbox PC app or the app you used to install it.
- If it is a mechanical HDD, move or reinstall the game to an SSD, then test the same scene or activity again.
- If problems continue, check the drive’s health using your operating system or drive manufacturer’s diagnostic tool before assuming graphics settings are the cause.
The beta FAQ also named minimum graphics-driver versions for that beta: NVIDIA GeForce Game Ready Driver 610.74 or newer, AMD 26.7.1 or newer, and Intel 101.8864 or newer. It warned that the beta would not launch with older NVIDIA drivers. These are not established as current launch requirements; the FAQ also said its PC specifications were not launch specifications. Check current official game guidance and your GPU maker’s driver release notes rather than treating those beta numbers as current.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Distinguish shader compilation from ongoing hitching
A hitch during initial startup or when new effects first appear can be related to shader compilation, but not every stutter has that cause. Microsoft describes Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) as a way to include precompiled shaders with a game download, reducing CPU work compiling shaders at first launch and shader-related stutter during play. Its DirectX overview of Advanced Shader Delivery says the Xbox PC app must be installed before downloading the game for the described experience, and lists Windows 11 version 24H2 or higher for that setup.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Microsoft’s 2026 description says first-launch shader compilation for E-Day takes a few seconds with ASD versus several minutes on a typical PC without it, and reports an approximately 95% reduction in compilation time. These are Microsoft’s feature figures, not an independent benchmark or a promise that ASD will eliminate all hitches on every system. The Coalition’s launch update says the Xbox PC app may allow required shaders to be pre-installed even for players who launch the game elsewhere. Availability varies with GPU vendor support and rollout timing.
- Check whether your Windows version and Xbox PC app setup meet Microsoft’s stated ASD conditions.
- If the game has just been installed or updated, allow shader preparation to complete before judging performance.
- If stutters persist during ordinary gameplay, investigate storage, current drivers, graphics settings, and the game’s current known issues rather than assuming shader compilation is responsible.
Interpret performance counters carefully
The Coalition says the launch build’s benchmark overlay does not include generated frames, so its FPS figure can be lower than the full displayed-frame rate when frame generation is enabled. Before comparing a number with another counter, identify which overlay produced it and whether frame generation is on. A counter that excludes generated frames is not necessarily showing the same measure as a display or other tool.

If the problem is low or fluctuating FPS
First confirm that your PC meets the final launch hardware requirements. The September 17 Xbox Wire specification announcement, updated September 28, links to the final specification graphic; use that graphic rather than the beta FAQ’s non-launch specifications. The exact CPU, GPU, and memory tiers are not reproduced here, so do not rely on beta figures or guesses when checking your hardware.

Compare only options supported by your GPU, using the same scene and resolution, and consider image quality and input responsiveness alongside frame rate. - Use the game’s benchmark or a repeatable gameplay scene, and note the resolution, graphics settings, upscaler, and frame-generation state.
- Compare the same conditions when changing one setting at a time; otherwise it is difficult to tell what caused a change.
- If results remain unexpectedly low, check current official requirements and patches before concluding that a particular driver or setting is the cause.
If the game crashes or will not launch
Account for documented launch-build caveats
The Coalition’s launch update reports broad stability and performance improvements, while noting that playing through the full game without reloading checkpoints or restarting may cause memory issues. If you become blocked at an encounter or objective, its advice is to reload a checkpoint. This caveat does not establish that memory is behind every crash.
The update also calls out the benchmark overlay’s omission of generated frames. That affects how FPS is reported; it is separate from evidence of a crash or actual loss of performance.

Use beta-specific fixes only if they match the old beta symptom
The official beta FAQ gave two targeted suggestions that should not be treated as universal launch-build repairs:
- LowLevelFatalError in the Xbox PC app: the beta FAQ directed affected players to Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool. Confirm current support guidance before using this beta-era route for a launch-build error.
- Crashes while recording: the beta FAQ attributed some recording crashes to older OBS versions and advised OBS 29.0.0 or newer. That is a beta instruction; verify current OBS and game compatibility before changing versions.
The same FAQ warned that beta stability and performance were works in progress, with possible dips or crashes. That warning describes the beta and should not be used to characterize the current build.

When to contact support
If crashes, missing assets, or performance problems persist after checking storage, current requirements, drivers, and relevant launch notes, consult the official Gears of War support page and check the Xbox service-status page. Include the exact error message, when the failure occurs, your Windows and driver versions, and whether the game is installed on an SSD; those details help distinguish a local PC issue from a known game or service problem.
