How to Fix Gboard Autocorrect and Predictive Text Problems on Android

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

If Gboard autocorrect is not working, its suggestion bar disappeared, or it keeps changing correct words, start with Gboard’s own controls: open Settings from the keyboard, then check Text correction. Turn on Auto-correction for automatic replacements and Show suggestion strip for the prediction bar. These are separate settings, so one can work while the other is disabled.

If the controls are correct, update Gboard, restart the phone, check the active languages, and clear Gboard’s cache. Clear data or storage only later because Google says that resets Gboard to its default state. The exact menu wording can differ by Android version and phone manufacturer.

First identify what is failing

“Gboard autocorrect not working,” “Gboard predictive text not showing,” “Gboard suggestion bar disappeared,” “Gboard keeps changing my words,” and “Gboard is using the wrong language” describe different problems. Matching the symptom to the setting prevents an unnecessary reset.

What you notice Most relevant check
Misspelled words are not replaced automatically Text correction > Auto-correction
The row of predicted words is missing Text correction > Show suggestion strip
Correct words are changed unexpectedly Auto-correction, Smart Compose, auto-capitalisation, languages, and learned words
Suggestions appear in the wrong language Enabled languages, selected layout, and the number of active languages
Problems began after an app or system change Gboard update, phone restart, then cache clearing

Autocorrection and prediction are related but independent. Autocorrection changes text as you type; the suggestion strip displays alternatives or likely next words. A missing strip does not necessarily mean autocorrection is broken, and turning off autocorrection does not by itself hide the strip.

Open Gboard’s settings

Use any app with a text field, such as a messaging or notes app, so that Gboard is visible. Tap the keyboard’s Settings control. On some Gboard layouts, you can touch and hold the comma key to open settings directly. Google documents this keyboard-based route in its Gboard troubleshooting guide.

  1. Tap a text field to display Gboard.
  2. Open the keyboard toolbar or the gear-shaped Settings button. If the button is hidden, tap the four-square toolbar button or the arrow to reveal more controls.
  3. If your layout does not show a settings button, touch and hold the comma key and select the settings option.
  4. Open Text correction to reach the autocorrect and suggestion controls.

Android manufacturers sometimes rename or rearrange these entries. Treat the labels above as landmarks rather than a promise that every phone has an identical path.

Check autocorrect and the suggestion bar

Turn automatic corrections on or off

In Gboard Settings > Text correction, find Auto-correction. Enable it when you want Gboard to replace likely misspellings while you type. If Gboard keeps changing words you intentionally typed, disable this switch temporarily and test in a short message. You can then decide whether another correction feature, a language setting, or a learned word is responsible.

Restore the predictive suggestion strip

In the same Text correction screen, enable Show suggestion strip. This controls the row above the keys where Gboard displays word suggestions. If the strip returns but the words are poor, leave the display setting enabled and continue with the language and dictionary checks below; hiding and showing the strip does not retrain the dictionary.

Check Smart Compose and auto-capitalisation

Still in Text correction, review Smart Compose and Auto-capitalisation if your complaint is unwanted changes rather than missing suggestions. Turn off the specific control that causes the behavior, then type several sentences to verify the result. These controls affect different parts of typing, so change one at a time and test after each change.

Suggestion features are not available in every language or on every device. Google’s suggestions documentation lists language and device limits for particular features and describes restrictions for Smart Compose. If a feature is enabled but never appears, verify that your language and device support it in Google’s guide to word suggestions and corrections. A supported basic suggestion strip and an unavailable advanced feature are different situations; do not treat the latter as proof that all of Gboard is malfunctioning.

Update Gboard and restart Android

Google recommends updating Gboard and restarting the device as the initial troubleshooting sequence. An update can replace a damaged or outdated app build, while a restart reloads the keyboard process and its language resources.

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Search for Gboard and open its app page.
  3. Tap Update if an update is offered. If the button says Open, the Play Store is not currently offering an update.
  4. Restart the Android phone or tablet using its normal power menu.
  5. Open a text field and test both a deliberate misspelling and the suggestion strip.

Test in more than one app. If the keyboard behaves correctly in one app but not another, the difference may be that app’s text field or its own input settings rather than Gboard’s global correction controls. This comparison also prevents you from resetting Gboard when the symptom is limited to a single application.

Clear Gboard’s cache before clearing its data

Cache clearing is a lower-impact reset than deleting Gboard’s stored data. Google places it after updating and restarting in its troubleshooting sequence. The labels can vary slightly, but the usual Android route is:

  1. Open Android Settings.
  2. Tap Apps (sometimes Apps & notifications).
  3. Select Gboard. If it is not visible, use the app list search.
  4. Tap Storage and cache.
  5. Tap Clear cache.
  6. Return to a text field and test autocorrection and suggestions.

Clearing a cache removes temporary files; it does not intentionally erase the learned-word dictionary. If the problem remains, you can return to the same screen and choose Clear data or Clear storage as a later step. Google says this resets Gboard to its default state, so you should expect to review keyboard settings again, including languages, correction switches, and personal preferences. Follow the sequence in Google’s Android troubleshooting instructions rather than jumping straight to a data reset.

What to record before a data reset

Before selecting Clear data or Clear storage, note the languages and layouts currently enabled, whether Auto-correction and Show suggestion strip are on, and any Smart Compose or auto-capitalisation choice you deliberately made. The reset returns Gboard to defaults, so this short checklist makes it easier to restore your preferred setup. It also gives you a useful comparison: if the same test works immediately after the reset, one of the earlier settings or learned words was likely involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check languages and keyboard layouts

Gboard can suggest or correct words according to the languages enabled in its settings. A wrong-language result can therefore look like broken autocorrect even when the correction engine is functioning.

  1. Open Gboard in a text field and enter Settings.
  2. Tap Languages.
  3. Confirm that the language you actually write in is enabled.
  4. Remove languages you do not use or switch to the intended language layout before testing.
  5. Return to the text field and type several words that are distinctive to the selected language.

Google recommends keeping the active set to one or two languages for smoother typing. This does not mean multilingual typing is unsupported; it means that a smaller active set makes language selection and suggestions less ambiguous.

When mixed-language suggestions are the problem

If suggestions alternate between languages or the keyboard repeatedly selects the wrong one, first verify the enabled languages and selected layout. A supplementary Gboard Community guide suggests checking whether languages are paired under one layout, or removing and re-adding them. This is community guidance, not an official guaranteed fix, so use it after the basic language review and test after each change.

Change only one language setting at a time. First select the language you use most, type a few distinctive words, and observe the result. Then add a second language if needed and repeat the same test. If the wrong-language behavior returns only after the second language is enabled, you have identified a configuration trigger without having to delete all Gboard data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manage words Gboard has learned

Gboard stores words you type to improve spelling and prediction. A name, technical term, slang word, or recurring typo can become part of that learned vocabulary and influence later suggestions.

Add a word intentionally

  1. Type the word until Gboard marks it with a red underline.
  2. Tap the underlined word.
  3. Choose Add to dictionary.
  4. Type the word again in a new sentence to confirm that it is accepted.

Delete learned words

  1. Open Gboard Settings.
  2. Tap Dictionary.
  3. Choose Delete learned words.
  4. Follow the confirmation prompt.

Google says deletion is permanent. Use this option when a persistent incorrect form keeps returning and changing individual correction controls does not solve it. After deletion, Gboard may need time and normal typing before it offers useful personal suggestions again. The dictionary controls and their consequences are described in Google’s suggestions and mistake-fixing documentation.

Deleting learned words is broader than removing one entry. If only one name or technical term is wrong, try correcting that word or turning off the setting responsible for the replacement first. Use the delete-learned-words command when unwanted personal vocabulary is widespread and you accept the permanent deletion.

Use a controlled test instead of guessing

After each change, test the same small set of phrases so you can identify which setting made a difference. For example, type one ordinary sentence, one word with a deliberate spelling error, one proper name, and one phrase in each enabled language. Record whether the word is automatically replaced, underlined without replacement, or shown in the suggestion strip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If the misspelling is replaced and the strip is visible, the basic controls are working.
  • If the misspelling is replaced but the strip is hidden, revisit Show suggestion strip.
  • If the strip is visible but the wrong language is suggested, revisit Languages and reduce the active set.
  • If only one personal word is wrong, edit the dictionary rather than resetting the entire app.
  • If behavior changes after a restart or cache clear, repeat the test in the app where you first noticed the issue.

Use short, repeatable tests instead of judging a single sentence. A prediction may change as you type more context, while an automatic correction is visible immediately. Testing in two apps and with one or two known words makes it clearer whether the issue is global, language-specific, or limited to a particular text field.

Understand the reset choices

The troubleshooting order is based on impact. Checking Text correction changes only the relevant behavior. Updating and restarting addresses an outdated app process without erasing your configuration. Clearing the cache removes temporary files. Clearing data or storage is the broadest Gboard step in this sequence because Google says it returns the keyboard to its default state.

There is no cost advantage to a paid cleaner for this problem: Android already exposes the cache action in the app’s storage screen. A factory reset is also not a standard Gboard remedy. Use the smallest step that matches the symptom, and move to a broader reset only when the preceding step fails.

Privacy: learned words, searches, and usage statistics are different

Google says Gboard saves words typed to help with spelling and prediction, and that these saved words stay on the device rather than being sent to Google. That statement concerns the personal words used for typing assistance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google separately says that searches are sent to Google to return search results and that usage statistics are sent to improve features. Those data flows are distinct from the on-device learned-word list. Clearing learned words removes the stored personal dictionary from Gboard; it does not change the separate behavior of search or usage-statistics features.

When the problem still remains

Escalate only after you have checked the correction switches, updated and restarted, reviewed languages, and cleared the cache. If you cleared Gboard data or storage, repeat the settings review because the reset returns the app to its defaults.

  1. Reproduce the issue in a simple text field and note whether it affects autocorrection, the suggestion strip, language selection, or one learned word.
  2. Open Gboard’s in-keyboard feedback option, or use the feedback option available in Android Settings for the app.
  3. Describe the Android device, the language or languages enabled, the exact setting values, and the steps that trigger the problem.
  4. Include whether updating, restarting, cache clearing, or a data reset changed the behavior.

Do not treat a factory reset or a paid cleaning utility as a standard Gboard remedy. The documented path is to correct the keyboard settings, update and restart, clear the cache, and use feedback if the fault persists.

A compact troubleshooting order

  1. Text correction: verify Auto-correction and Show suggestion strip; review Smart Compose and auto-capitalisation for unwanted changes.
  2. Update and restart: install the latest Gboard version offered in Google Play, then restart Android.
  3. Languages: enable the intended language, select its layout, and keep the active set focused.
  4. Cache: use Android Settings > Apps > Gboard > Storage and cache > Clear cache.
  5. Learned words: add legitimate terms or permanently delete learned words from Dictionary.
  6. Data reset: use Clear data or Clear storage only when the earlier steps fail, remembering that it returns Gboard to default settings.
  7. Feedback: report the remaining behavior through Gboard or Android Settings with precise reproduction details.

Why does Gboard keep changing my words?

Review Auto-correction, Smart Compose, auto-capitalisation, active languages, and learned words. Turn off one suspected control at a time and test with the same short phrases.

Will clearing Gboard data delete my settings?

Google says Clear data or Clear storage resets Gboard to its default state. You should expect to review languages, correction switches, and other keyboard preferences afterward.

How can I remove a word Gboard learned?

In Gboard Settings, open Dictionary, choose Delete learned words, and confirm. Google says this deletion is permanent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is Gboard using the wrong language?

Check Gboard’s enabled languages and selected layout. Google recommends keeping the active set to one or two languages for smoother typing. A Gboard Community guide also suggests checking paired layouts or removing and re-adding languages, but that is supplementary guidance.

Should I install a cleaner app or factory-reset my phone?

No. The standard sequence is to check Gboard settings, update and restart, review languages, clear the cache, and use feedback if needed. A paid cleaner or factory reset is not a documented standard fix for this issue.

The Bottom Line

Start with Gboard Settings > Text correction: Auto-correction controls replacements, while Show suggestion strip controls predictive text. Then update and restart Android, verify the active languages, clear the cache, and manage learned words. Use Clear data or Clear storage only as a later reset because it restores Gboard’s defaults.
