On the ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA), most launch and input problems come from an outdated Windows/Xbox/Armoury Crate stack, an Armoury Crate profile pointing at the wrong executable, or Xbox mode displaying a running app in an unexpected way. Update everything and restart first; then check the game’s profile, startup path and control mode before changing the installation.
Use the workflow below in order. It separates a missing library entry from a failed launch, a bad control mapping, Xbox-mode window behavior and docked-controller handoff, so you can apply the smallest fix that preserves your existing game files.

Identify the symptom before changing anything
The same black screen or unresponsive button can have different causes on the Ally X. Start with the symptom that best matches what you see.

Do not begin by deleting a library tile or reinstalling the game. A tile is only a library entry, and removing it does not uninstall the underlying game.

Update the complete software stack first
Windows 11, the Xbox PC app, Game Bar and Armoury Crate SE work together on this device. A profile or control change made while one component is out of date can leave you troubleshooting the wrong layer. Apply updates before you edit profiles.
- Open Windows Update. In Game Bar, go to Settings > More Settings > Open Windows Settings > Windows Update. Install every available update.
- Restart the Ally X. Let Windows complete its restart rather than returning straight to the game. This loads the updated input and shell components.
- Update Armoury Crate SE. Open Command Center, select Open Armoury Crate SE, then choose Update Center > Check for Updates > Update All.
- Keep Xbox components current. Update the Xbox PC app and Game Bar as well. If either app offers an update, finish it and restart again before testing the game.
This sequence is the baseline for every later branch. If the problem disappears after the restart, leave the game profile unchanged; unnecessary profile edits can introduce a new mismatch.
When a game is missing from Armoury Crate
Add the existing installation to the library
Armoury Crate SE normally imports installed games, but an imported title can be absent from its library. Open Armoury Crate, choose Manage Library, and select Add Game/App to Library. Pick the installed game or its launcher entry, then save the library change.
This operation creates or restores a library tile; it does not install the game. Conversely, removing a tile from Armoury Crate does not uninstall the game. To uninstall, use the launcher that installed the title or Windows’ Apps settings. Keeping those actions separate prevents an attempted library repair from deleting local files.
Check other PC storefronts through Xbox
The Xbox Library can aggregate installed titles from other PC storefronts. In the Xbox app, open My Apps and select the storefront you use. If that storefront is not listed, open Microsoft Edge and download its launcher from the storefront’s own website, then install or sign in through that launcher.
The Xbox library view is an inventory and launch surface, not proof that every title is installed locally. Confirm whether the entry is marked as owned, installable or playable through Xbox Cloud Gaming before assuming that a missing tile means the game has been removed.

When the game tile launches the wrong program or wrong controls
Correct the startup executable path
Armoury Crate profiles are tied to a startup executable. If a game has a separate launcher, helper executable or multiple editions, Armoury Crate can start the wrong file and apply the wrong profile. Open the game’s profile, choose Game Options > Game Info, and select an alternative path that points to the executable the game actually uses at startup. Save the change and restart the game.

If it now opens with the expected profile, keep that path as the game’s startup entry. Do not create several competing tiles while diagnosing one path; that makes it harder to tell which executable received the profile.
Confirm Gamepad Mode
Open the same game profile and verify that it uses Gamepad Mode, not Desktop Mode. Desktop Mode is intended for pointer and keyboard-style navigation, so a game expecting controller input may ignore the handheld buttons when that mode is active.
Review the button mapping shown in the profile. On the RC73, press M1/M2 + B to display the current mappings while diagnosing an input problem. This reveals whether a rear-button modifier or custom assignment has changed what the game receives.
Calibrate sticks, triggers and gyro input
When slight stick movement is ignored
Armoury Crate SE includes calibration for the sticks and triggers. Use it when an analog control does not reach the game, reaches it inconsistently or only responds after moving farther than expected.

Dead-zone settings create a neutral area in which small movements are ignored. A larger dead zone can suppress accidental drift but reduces initial responsiveness. If a slight, deliberate stick movement is ignored, reduce the dead zone gradually and test again in the game rather than making a large change at once.

When movement jitters or a gyro drifts
Anti-deadzone settings increase the signal leaving the neutral area. They can make a control respond sooner, but too much anti-deadzone can amplify tiny, unwanted movement. For gyro drift or jitter, reduce the anti-deadzone setting in the gyro profile, then retest with the device held still.
Make one adjustment at a time and keep notes of the original values. Calibration changes the input signal; it does not repair a game that is using the wrong executable or Desktop Mode.
Why controls change when the Ally X is docked
Docking introduces a deliberate controller handoff. Xbox’s April 2026 update says the paired Xbox or Designed for Xbox controller takes control when the handheld is docked, and the Ally X’s built-in controls are disabled until that external controller is disconnected.

For the smoothest handoff, pair the external controller before docking:
- Turn on the Xbox or Designed for Xbox controller and pair it with the Ally X while the device is still in handheld use.
- Confirm that Windows recognizes the paired controller and that its buttons work in the game or a controller test screen.
- Dock the Ally X and launch or resume the game.
- If you need handheld controls again, disconnect the external controller. Input returns to the handheld after the controller is disconnected.
If the handheld buttons appear dead only while docked, that behavior is expected controller routing rather than a failed calibration. Disconnect the paired controller first; only then continue with Gamepad Mode or calibration checks.
When Xbox mode makes a running game look missing
Understand the shell’s limits
Xbox mode is a controller-focused, full-screen shell layered over Windows 11. It requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and is available only in supported markets. The shell shows one window at a time, can display unsupported full-screen apps against a black background and disables some ordinary desktop shortcuts.

A black background or an apparently empty screen therefore does not prove that the game failed to launch. The game may be running behind the window that Xbox mode currently shows.
Use Task View to find the game
Open Task View with Win+Tab, a long press of the Xbox button or a swipe upward from the bottom edge. Select the game’s window from the open items. Task View is the switching mechanism to use when Xbox mode is showing another app or when a full-screen title is not represented by the expected tile.
If the game still does not appear in Task View after you select its Armoury Crate entry, return to the update and executable-path steps. Task View can reveal a hidden running window, but it cannot repair a launch command that points to the wrong file.
Exit Xbox mode when desktop access is necessary
You can leave Xbox mode through Game Bar settings, Task View or Win+F11. Exit temporarily when you need to inspect a launcher, change a Windows setting or download a storefront client. Re-enter Xbox mode only after the game launches correctly from the normal Windows desktop.

After updates, a library check, a corrected executable path and a control-profile check, use the Xbox Library to classify the title. It may be listed as owned, installable or playable through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Those labels distinguish a local installation from a streaming entitlement.
Use cloud play as a fallback, not a repair
Xbox Cloud Gaming can let you play a supported title without fixing its local files, but it requires a network connection. It is a practical way to confirm that your account can access the game or to keep playing while local troubleshooting continues; it does not repair a damaged local installation or a broken launcher.

Prepare for offline use
If you plan to travel without reliable connectivity, sign in while connected, pre-download game updates or downloadable content and test the title online before leaving. Cloud play cannot substitute for that preparation because streaming requires an active connection.

A repeatable troubleshooting checklist
- Install Windows updates, restart, then run Armoury Crate SE’s Update Center > Check for Updates > Update All.
- Confirm the Xbox PC app and Game Bar are current.
- If the title is absent, use Armoury Crate’s Manage Library > Add Game/App to Library.
- Do not mistake removing a library tile for uninstalling the game.
- In the game profile, select Gamepad Mode and inspect the button mapping with M1/M2 + B.
- Under Game Options > Game Info, choose the executable that actually starts the game.
- Calibrate sticks and triggers; reduce a gyro profile’s anti-deadzone when it jitters or drifts.
- In Xbox mode, use Task View rather than assuming a black or empty screen means the process stopped.
- Pair an Xbox or Designed for Xbox controller before docking; disconnect it to restore handheld input.
- Use Xbox Cloud Gaming only as a connected fallback, not as evidence that local files have been repaired.
What the compatibility figures do—and do not—tell you
Xbox reported more than 1,000 PC games in its Handheld Compatibility program in 2026 and reported default Game Profiles for 40 supported games in 2025. Those figures indicate the scale of compatibility work, not a guarantee that every Windows game will launch identically on every Ally X configuration.
No authoritative failure-rate statistic has been published for games not launching or controls not working on the ROG Xbox Ally X. Treat a single title’s behavior as a title-, launcher- or profile-specific problem until the steps above identify the failing layer.
Xbox mode availability, compatibility counts and app menu labels can change with Windows, Xbox and Armoury Crate releases. If a label differs, use the closest current equivalent in the same app and confirm the device is running Windows 11 24H2 or later when Xbox mode is involved.

Update the full software stack, correct the Armoury Crate executable path and Gamepad Mode, then use Task View for Xbox-mode display issues and pair an external controller before docking.
