The fastest way to fix an unstable PC game is to identify which symptom you have, record when it occurs, and change one variable at a time. Restart Windows, check the game’s current requirements, update Windows and your graphics driver, verify the installation, close unnecessary background software, and then reduce resolution or demanding settings while watching CPU, GPU, memory, temperatures, and frame-time behavior. A minimum-specification match does not promise high FPS, and a high average FPS does not rule out stutter.
First, identify exactly what is going wrong
“Crashing,” “low FPS,” and “stuttering” describe different failure modes. The useful fix depends on whether the game fails before its menu, closes during play, renders every frame slowly, or produces occasional long frames. Write down the details before changing settings; this prevents a temporary improvement from hiding the original cause.

| Symptom | What to record | Most useful comparison |
|---|---|---|
| It never launches or closes during startup | Exact error text, launcher, whether a window appears, and whether the failure began after an update | Does another game launch on the same PC? |
| It crashes after reaching a menu or during a particular scene | Location, repeatable action, game version, and any crash report or log requested by the developer | Does it happen in one game or several? |
| FPS is consistently low | Resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate result, CPU/GPU/memory use, and temperatures while the slowdown is visible | Does lowering resolution or one demanding setting change the result? |
| Movement or input hitches intermittently | When the hitch occurs, frame-time behavior, loads, temperatures, and whether it follows a repeatable event | Is the average FPS acceptable while individual frames become unusually long? |
| The problem began after a change | Game, Windows, driver, or graphics-setting update date and the previous configuration | Does reverting the changed setting or installing the current supported update alter the symptom? |
Also note your Windows edition and version, processor, graphics card, installed RAM, storage drive, game version, launcher, display resolution, and current graphics settings. Steam Support notes that the number of possible hardware and software combinations makes a machine-specific diagnosis more reliable than a universal fix.
Check requirements before changing advanced settings
Find the game’s current minimum and recommended requirements on its official store page or support site, then compare every component with your PC. Check the operating-system version, processor, memory, graphics card and graphics memory, storage space, and any stated API or special requirement. Requirements can change with expansions and patches, so use the current listing rather than an old screenshot.
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by NVIDIA GeForce GT 610, 40nm chipset process with 523MHz core frequency, integrated with 2048MB DDR3 memory and 64-bit bus width
- Compatible with windows 11 system, no need to download driver manually
- HDMI / VGA 2 ports output available. HDMI Max Resolution-2560x1600, VGA Max Resolution-2048x1536
- Support DirectX 11, OpenCL, CUDA, DirectCompute 5.0
- Original half height bracket matches with the low profile brackets make the Glorto GeForce GT 610 graphics card fit well with all PC tower, small form factor and HTPC(except micro form factor)
Meeting the minimum means the game may be able to run under the developer’s stated conditions; it does not guarantee a particular frame rate, visual quality, or stable frame pacing. If your PC is below the requirements, first test a lower resolution and less demanding settings. Consider an upgrade only after measuring which component is actually short and confirming compatibility with your motherboard, power supply, case, cooling, and target resolution.
Do these safe checks before deeper troubleshooting
- Restart Windows. A full restart clears transient processes and leaves the game with a fresh session. Do not treat sleep or closing the game alone as an equivalent test.
- Install pending Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update, install applicable updates, restart if requested, and retest before changing several other variables.
- Update the graphics driver from the GPU or PC manufacturer. Use the driver appropriate for your exact graphics card and Windows version. Avoid installing a random package intended for a different model.
- Close non-essential background programs. Exit browsers, recording tools, launchers you do not need, and other heavy applications for one controlled test. If the game improves, reopen programs one at a time to identify interference.
- Return experimental overclocks or undervolts to a stable default. A setting that appears stable in one workload can crash another. Make one controlled change and document it so you can undo it.
Fix launch failures and crashes in the right order
When the game will not start
- Read the complete error message and capture its wording. Record whether the launcher says “preparing to launch,” whether a process appears briefly, and whether Windows reports an application error.
- Restart Windows, then try the game once with non-essential background software closed.
- Install relevant Windows and graphics-driver updates, restart, and test again.
- Use the launcher’s built-in game-file verification or repair command. In Steam, the usual route is Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files; other launchers use different labels. Let the process finish, allow it to reacquire damaged or missing files, and launch again.
- Check free storage on the installation drive. If the launcher cannot write updates or temporary files, free space before repeating verification.
- Consult the game developer’s current support article and patch notes for the exact error. A game-specific workaround may depend on its version and cannot be safely generalized to every title.
Corrupted extracted files are one documented reason a launch can fail, which is why verification is an early check rather than a last resort. Verification does not repair a failing drive, unsupported hardware, or every third-party conflict.

When it crashes after the menu or during play
- Determine whether the crash is tied to one save, level, cutscene, graphics option, or repeatable action. A repeatable trigger is valuable evidence for the developer.
- Record the exact game build and any recent patch. If the crash started immediately after a patch, read that patch’s known-issues list before making unrelated system changes.
- Test with non-essential overlays and background applications closed. Do not assume a particular overlay is the cause; use a before-and-after test.
- Verify the game files, update Windows and the graphics driver, and retest with a conservative graphics preset.
- Keep any crash dump or log the developer requests. Do not delete evidence before copying it to a safe location.
If several unrelated games crash in the same session, the scope has changed from a game-specific defect to a possible system, driver, temperature, memory, or hardware problem. Continue with the monitoring steps below and seek qualified support if the pattern persists.
Raise low FPS by reducing load methodically
Low FPS means the game is taking too long to produce frames consistently. Change one setting at a time, play the same area for long enough to reproduce the slowdown, and record the result. A large list of simultaneous changes makes it impossible to know which trade-off helped.

Use a controlled graphics test
- Choose a repeatable scene or built-in benchmark. Keep the same resolution, camera movement, and test duration for each comparison.
- Lower the display resolution temporarily. If FPS rises substantially, the graphics workload is likely a limiting factor; if it barely changes, investigate CPU, memory, thermals, background programs, or a frame-rate cap.
- Reduce the most demanding options individually, such as shadows, reflections, volumetric effects, view distance, or anti-aliasing. The exact names differ by game.
- Check whether a frame-rate limit, synchronization mode, or display refresh setting is intentionally restricting output. Record the original value before changing it.
- Close unnecessary startup and background programs, then repeat the same scene. Steam identifies competing programs and high resource use as potential contributors.
Do not promise a universal FPS number. A result that is smooth on one monitor and game version may be unsuitable on another, and an average alone does not describe frame pacing.
Check memory pressure while the slowdown occurs
Open Windows Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and observe CPU, GPU, memory, disk, and network activity during the reproduced slowdown. High memory use can force Windows to swap data to storage, producing visible pauses and lower frame rates. Close the specific process consuming resources, if it is safe to do so, and retest. If memory pressure returns with only the game running, compare installed RAM with the game’s recommended requirement before considering an upgrade.

Diagnose stuttering separately from average FPS
Stutter is a frame-pacing problem: most frames may arrive quickly, but one unusually long frame is visible as a hitch or delayed input. Steam’s overlay-monitor guidance explains that a game can report a solid 70 FPS while a single long frame still causes noticeable stutter or input latency. Therefore, do not declare the issue fixed solely because an FPS counter looks high.
Measure when the hitch happens
- Write down whether it occurs during loading, entering a new area, a large fight, camera movement, saving, or a repeatable effect.
- Watch CPU, GPU, memory, disk activity, and temperatures at the moment of the hitch. Note which resource changes, rather than assuming the busiest graph is the cause.
- Compare a quiet scene with the problem scene using the same resolution and settings.
- Test one change—such as a lower texture or shadow setting, fewer background programs, or a different resolution—then repeat the same trigger.
Overheating can reduce performance, and memory pressure can create disk swapping and hitches. Keep ventilation clear, verify that fans are operating normally, and stop testing if the system reports unsafe temperatures or powers off. The exact safe temperature depends on the component and manufacturer; use its specifications rather than a universal threshold.

Compare the pattern to choose the next branch
| Pattern | What it suggests | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Only one game crashes | A game file, patch, setting, save, or game-specific compatibility issue is more likely than a universal PC fault. | Verify files, use conservative settings, and contact that developer with the exact build and trigger. |
| Several games crash | Investigate shared drivers, Windows, memory, thermals, storage, or unstable hardware settings. | Update system software, monitor temperatures and memory, restore stable defaults, and seek PC support if it continues. |
| Low FPS in every game | A system-wide resource limit, configuration cap, driver problem, or hardware shortfall may be involved. | Compare requirements and measured CPU/GPU/memory use; inspect display and frame-rate limits. |
| Only one game stutters | A title-specific scene, asset, patch, or setting may be responsible. | Reproduce the trigger, test one setting at a time, and check the developer’s known issues. |
| Symptoms began after a driver, Windows, or game update | The changed software is a useful comparison point, but timing alone does not prove causation. | Record versions, read release notes, and use the vendor’s supported rollback or current fix when available. |
| Crashes include restarts, blue screens, or shutdowns | The problem may involve hardware, power, heat, or a system-level driver. | Stop treating it as only a game setting; back up important data and seek qualified PC support. |
Decide whether an upgrade is justified
Do not buy a component because an FPS counter is low without measuring the limiting resource. Compare the game’s recommended requirements with your PC, your target resolution and refresh rate, and the resource graphs during the slowdown.
| Observed shortfall | Possible direction | Checks before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics card is below the game’s requirement or GPU load remains the limit after lowering CPU-heavy options | A compatible graphics-card upgrade may help. | Power-supply capacity and connectors, case clearance, motherboard slot, cooling, driver support, and budget. |
| Available memory is low and disk activity rises during play | Additional compatible RAM may reduce swapping. | Motherboard capacity, memory type and speed, matching modules, operating-system limits, and whether the game itself recommends more. |
| CPU is saturated while GPU use is comparatively low | Reduce CPU-heavy settings or investigate a processor/platform limit. | Socket and motherboard compatibility, cooling, firmware support, and whether the workload is truly CPU-bound. |
| Temperatures rise and clocks or performance fall | Improve airflow or repair cooling before replacing performance parts. | Dust, fan operation, heatsink contact, room temperature, and manufacturer limits. |
These are conditional paths, not model recommendations. A new component cannot correct corrupted files, a defective drive, an incompatible patch, or an application conflict.
When and how to escalate
Contact the game developer or publisher
Use game support when the failure is limited to one title or follows a reproducible in-game action. Provide the exact error text, game and launcher version, Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage location, resolution and settings, steps that reproduce the problem, and every troubleshooting step already completed. Attach logs or crash reports only through the support channel’s requested method, and remove personal information from files when appropriate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse a qualified PC technician
Seek local professional help when multiple games and other applications fail, the PC restarts or blue-screens, temperatures appear unsafe, storage or memory tests report errors, or the machine shuts down under load. Back up important files first. A technician can test hardware and power delivery that game settings cannot diagnose.
Optional diagnostic utilities
Windows diagnostic or optimization software may help organize system information, but it is not a guaranteed repair for a crashing game or a proven way to increase FPS. Treat any such utility as optional, review what it changes, keep a restore or backup plan, and do the official game, Windows, driver, and file-verification checks first.
Quick Recap
A compact repeatable checklist
- Record the symptom, exact error, trigger, versions, hardware, resolution, and settings.
- Restart Windows and compare the PC with the game’s current requirements.
- Install applicable Windows and manufacturer graphics-driver updates.
- Close non-essential background programs for a controlled test.
- Verify or repair the game installation through the launcher.
- For low FPS, lower resolution and demanding settings one at a time.
- For stutter, inspect frame-time behavior and resource or temperature changes at the hitch.
- Compare one game with several games to separate a title problem from a system problem.
- Measure the actual shortfall before considering a graphics-card, RAM, or other hardware upgrade.
- Escalate with complete evidence to the developer or a qualified technician when basic checks do not explain the failure.
