How to fix FSR 4 performance, image quality, or compatibility problems on Steam Deck

If FSR 4 is missing, performs poorly, looks wrong, or appears not to work on a Steam Deck, first treat it as a compatibility question rather than a graphics-setting problem. AMD’s current documentation calls FSR 4 FSR Upscaling inside its FSR “Redstone” technology, and its published machine-learning upscaling list names Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics. Steam Deck’s RDNA 2 GPU is not on that list, so there is no established official FSR 4 support or guaranteed Deck performance gain to unlock.

You can still troubleshoot the game, SteamOS, Proton, and any older or native upscaler it offers. The sequence below separates ordinary performance and image-quality problems from the hardware and software boundary around FSR 4, without treating a menu label or an experimental workaround as proof that FSR 4 is rendering.

What FSR 4 means on a Steam Deck

AMD’s published compatibility boundary

AMD describes FSR Upscaling as a machine-learning upscaler intended to improve image quality over FSR 3.1 on supported hardware. Its current compatibility guidance lists Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics for the ML-based feature and says RX 6000 support is planned for 2027. The guidance does not list the Steam Deck’s RDNA 2 graphics processor.

That omission matters. A game can contain an FSR option, and a compatibility layer can expose an FSR-related setting, without the Deck having the hardware support AMD currently identifies for FSR Upscaling. Do not expect a hidden toggle, a higher-quality preset, or a driver replacement to turn the Deck into an officially supported FSR 4 device.

Why a menu entry is not proof

AMD distinguishes games that integrate FSR Upscaling natively from its Windows workflow for games with FSR 3.1 or later. In that Windows workflow, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition can swap software DLLs to upgrade a supported game. A label in a game or Proton menu therefore tells you only that an option or code path is present; it does not confirm that the ML-based model is executing on your Deck.

A Valve Proton issue reports cases in which selecting or upgrading to FSR 4 in Proton Experimental fell back to FSR 3. That is a report about a particular software path, not a guarantee about every game, Deck, or Proton build. Use observable in-game behavior and a controlled comparison instead of assuming that the label describes the active renderer.

What troubleshooting can and cannot change

  • Updates, restarts, Proton selection, and lower graphics settings can resolve ordinary crashes, instability, or excessive workload.
  • A game’s own FSR implementation may work independently of AMD’s ML-based FSR Upscaling, depending on that game and its renderer.
  • Those steps do not establish official FSR 4 support on Steam Deck, and no controlled Deck-wide FSR 4 performance or image-quality result has been established here.

Identify the symptom before changing settings

Write down the exact game, Deck model, SteamOS version, Proton tool, launch options, and the symptom. The LCD and OLED Deck models are both covered by Steam’s software troubleshooting guidance, but a game-specific issue can look similar to a platform limitation.

Symptom First question Useful evidence
Low frame rate or uneven frame pacing Does the game remain slow with its upscaler disabled or with a lower preset? Game settings, resolution, frame-rate display if the game provides one, SteamOS version, and Proton version.
Blurred UI or a soft image Is the game rendering below native resolution, and does the appearance change when its upscaler is disabled? Before-and-after screenshots from the same scene and the exact upscaler and sharpness options shown by the game.
Shimmering, ghosting, or unstable fine detail Does the artifact occur only during motion, and does another in-game upscaler change it? The scene, camera movement, selected quality mode, and whether the effect is present at native rendering.
FSR 4 option missing Is the option documented by the game, or is it supplied by a Proton or modification layer? Game version, SteamOS version, Proton branch, and a screenshot of the menu.
Game fails to launch or becomes unstable Did the problem begin after a Proton change, a desktop utility, or an experimental component? Launch options, Proton tool, installed third-party applications, and whether the failure remains after a restart.

Follow Steam’s safe troubleshooting sequence

  1. Record a clean baseline. Start the game with the current settings and note whether the problem is performance, image quality, launch failure, or instability. Record whether the Deck is an LCD or OLED model, the SteamOS version, the selected Proton tool, and any launch options. Change one variable at a time so you can tell which action mattered.
  2. Install system updates and restart. Steam’s official guide states: “To address issues with system instability, install any available system updates (Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates) and restart your Steam Deck (from the Software Updates section or via Steam > Power > Restart).” Apply all available updates, then use Steam > Power > Restart before testing again.
  3. Temporarily disable third-party desktop applications for instability tests. If you installed utilities through Desktop Mode, disable them and retry the game. This isolates background software from the game and Proton. It is a stability check, not a method for enabling FSR 4.
  4. Try the current Proton version when the game needs Proton. For a Steam game that runs through Proton, test the current Proton version offered for that title rather than immediately moving to an experimental branch. Keep the result with your baseline notes. If the game is native to SteamOS, Proton changes will not address its renderer.
  5. Reduce the game’s workload. Use the game’s lower graphics preset, then reduce individual expensive settings if the game allows it. Retest the same scene and the same upscaler mode. Lowering settings can improve ordinary frame-rate or stability problems, but it does not make unsupported FSR Upscaling hardware-supported.
  6. Test the game’s own upscaler independently. If the game offers FSR, compare its available modes with the upscaler disabled, using the same resolution and scene. A native implementation may be available even when AMD’s ML-based FSR Upscaling is not. Record the exact label the game uses; do not rewrite “FSR,” “FSR 3.1,” or “FSR 4” as proof of the underlying algorithm.
  7. Only then investigate an existing Proton-based upgrade. If a Proton tool or compatibility modification is already part of your setup, verify which branch and version is active and compare behavior with a normal current Proton version. Use a repeatable scene, identical settings, and a reliable in-game indicator. Avoid making DLL replacement a routine Deck fix: AMD’s documented DLL-swapping workflow is for AMD Software on Windows, not a SteamOS installation procedure.
  8. Escalate with complete details. If the issue persists, capture the game title and version, SteamOS version, LCD or OLED model, Proton tool and branch, launch options, exact symptom, selected upscaler, and whether third-party utilities were disabled. Send a platform problem to Steam Support and a game-specific renderer problem to the game developer, including those details.

Compare the available upscaling paths honestly

Your game may expose more than one kind of scaling. The practical choices are a game’s native implementation, a SteamOS-level scaling feature if your particular setup exposes one, and an unofficial Proton-based upgrade. They do not have the same compatibility or risk profile.

Path Compatibility Image behavior Frame-rate and latency evidence Setup risk
Game-native upscaler Depends on the game, renderer, and the code shipped with that game; it may work without AMD’s ML-based FSR Upscaling. Judge with the game’s own quality modes and a repeatable scene. No Deck-wide image-quality winner has been established. Measure in the specific game and settings. No controlled Deck-wide FSR 4 comparison is available. Lowest, because it uses the game’s supported options.
SteamOS-level scaling, where exposed Depends on the game’s presentation mode and the SteamOS feature available on that system. Can differ from the game’s internal reconstruction; test text, fine detail, and motion separately. There is no general Deck-wide FSR 4 result to apply to this path. Use identical scenes and settings. Usually lower than replacing game files, but the exact behavior is game-dependent.
Unofficial Proton-based upgrade Depends on the Proton build, game integration, and hardware. A Proton issue reports fallback from an FSR 4 selection to FSR 3 in at least one path. A label can remain visible even when the requested model is not the one rendering; verify rather than assume. No controlled Deck benchmark establishes a performance or latency advantage. Higher: experimental components can change behavior and may affect a game prefix or saves.

For a fair comparison, hold the game version, resolution, graphics preset, SteamOS version, Proton version, and scene constant. Change only the upscaling path, and record frame rate or frame pacing only if the same reliable measurement is available in every test. Do not present a single game’s result as a Deck-wide rule.

Diagnose image-quality complaints

Blur or unreadable fine text

First check whether the game is rendering at a reduced internal resolution. Disable its upscaler, keep the display resolution and graphics preset unchanged, and inspect the same text and geometry. If the image becomes clear at native rendering but performance falls, the complaint is a quality-versus-workload trade-off rather than proof that FSR 4 is malfunctioning. If the game supplies separate quality modes, test them one at a time and record their exact names.

Shimmering, crawling detail, or ghost trails

Capture a repeatable moving scene and compare the game’s available upscalers with native rendering. Temporal reconstruction can show different artifacts from native rendering, and a Proton compatibility layer can add another variable. If changing Proton changes the artifact, report the game, Proton branch, and scene; do not infer that every Deck has the same behavior.

An FSR 4 label that looks like an older mode

Check the active Proton branch and the game’s own documentation or menu. The reported Proton fallback means the selected name is not sufficient evidence. Compare the same scene with the option disabled and with the normal current Proton version, and preserve screenshots or notes that show the difference.

Diagnose performance and launch failures

Low frame rate after enabling an upscaler

Return to the baseline, apply SteamOS updates and a restart, then lower the game’s graphics settings. Test the game-native upscaler, if present, without adding an experimental Proton component. If the game remains slow, the upscaler is not a guaranteed solution; it may have its own processing cost or may not be using the model the menu suggests.

Crashes or instability after a Proton change

Switch back to the current normal Proton version used for the game and retest after a restart. Disable third-party desktop applications during the test. Keep Proton Experimental out of the basic sequence unless you are deliberately investigating a compatibility issue and can accept changing behavior.

Considering Proton Experimental or Bleeding Edge

Valve documents Proton Experimental as a public testing branch. Bleeding Edge is automated and untested, and Valve warns that it can damage a game prefix or saves. Neither branch should be the default response to an FSR menu or performance complaint. Back up important saves using the game’s supported method before any experiment, and be prepared to return to a normal Proton version if the title stops launching.

Why AMD’s Windows upgrade instructions do not translate to SteamOS

AMD’s documented upgrade method uses AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and software DLL swapping for supported games. The technical-preview driver notes specify Windows 10 or Windows 11 and Radeon RX 9000 hardware. Those prerequisites describe AMD’s Windows workflow; they are not Steam Deck or SteamOS installation instructions.

Installing or copying Windows-oriented components into a Proton prefix is therefore not an official way to add FSR 4 to the Deck. It can introduce a new failure mode while leaving the underlying GPU compatibility unchanged. If you are investigating such a modification, treat it as an unsupported experiment, record exactly what changed, and keep a known-good Proton configuration available.

When the right answer is “this is not an FSR 4 fix”

  • The game has no native FSR option and the only FSR 4 entry comes from an experimental compatibility layer.
  • The Deck is listed nowhere in AMD’s current ML-upscaling compatibility guidance.
  • The visible option changes neither image quality nor measured behavior in a controlled comparison.
  • The problem remains after updates, restart, third-party-app isolation, current Proton, and lower graphics settings.
  • The workaround requires an untested branch and risks a game prefix or saves without a reproducible benefit.

In these cases, use the game’s supported renderer and settings, or report the compatibility issue with your complete configuration. A lower preset or an older native upscaler can be a practical solution even though it is not FSR 4.

What to include in a support report

A precise report lets Steam Support or the developer distinguish a Deck hardware boundary from a game regression:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Exact game title, edition, and game version.
  • Steam Deck LCD or OLED model and SteamOS version.
  • Proton tool, branch, and version, or confirmation that the game is native.
  • Display resolution, in-game resolution or scaling mode, graphics preset, and every FSR-related option.
  • Launch options and any compatibility-layer modification.
  • The exact symptom: frame-rate loss, frame pacing, blur, shimmer, ghosting, missing option, crash, or failure to launch.
  • Whether the issue reproduces after a system update and restart.
  • Whether third-party desktop applications were disabled.
  • A controlled comparison showing what changed when the upscaler or Proton version changed.

This information is more useful than reporting only that “FSR 4 is broken,” because that label can describe several different code paths or a fallback to another FSR version.
