Start with the least destructive checks and match the fix to your device, storefront and exact error instead of reinstalling immediately.
First note the device, game, launcher or store, what happens after you select Play, and any error code or message. Then work through the sequence below. It applies to free-to-play downloads as well as other digital games, although the account and subscription checks differ by platform.

Identify the failure before changing anything
Check whether one game or every game is affected
Try another installed title on the same device. If several games fail at once, suspect a platform or launcher outage, an operating-system or driver problem, account authentication, or a system-wide conflict. If only one title fails, damaged files, that game’s requirements, an entitlement problem, or a title-specific update is more likely.

- Nothing happens after Play: the launcher may be blocked, the executable may be missing, or another process may be interfering.
- A window appears and closes: check requirements, graphics drivers, corrupted files and security-software blocks.
- A padlock, “not entitled” message or subscription warning appears: investigate the account, license or availability before reinstalling.
- An error code is shown: write it down exactly, including punctuation and capitalization. It will be more useful to support staff than a description such as “it won’t work.”
Use this low-risk troubleshooting order
1. Check the service status
Open the official status page for the launcher or console network and look for an incident affecting sign-in, downloads, authentication, multiplayer or the specific store. Epic’s launcher guidance specifically puts its server-status check near the start of troubleshooting, and PlayStation directs users to its service-status information for some access failures. During an outage, reinstalling files or changing local settings will not restore a service that is unavailable. Wait for the incident to clear, then test the game again.

2. Confirm the account and access
Make sure the launcher or console is signed in to the account that claimed or downloaded the game. A free download can still require an online account, a valid entitlement and a working authentication service. For a subscription-based title, verify that the subscription is active and that the game is still included in the catalog in your region. On a console, an unavailable or locked title is an access problem, not evidence of a damaged installation.
3. Compare the device with the game’s requirements
Find the game’s current minimum requirements on its official store or publisher page and compare them with the actual PC specification: operating-system version, processor, memory, graphics processor, graphics memory and available storage. A machine below minimum requirements can fail to launch or perform poorly; buying hardware before identifying a specific shortfall is guesswork. On a console, check the system software and storage location rather than applying PC requirements.
4. Update the game, launcher, system and graphics driver
Install any pending game and launcher update. On PC, apply available Windows updates and the current graphics driver for the installed GPU. Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting guidance and Epic’s launcher checklist both call out current drivers; restart the computer when the driver installer requests it. On a console, install the system update shown in Settings before attempting a reinstall. A restart after updating clears processes that may still be holding an old version open.
5. Repair the installed files
Use the storefront’s built-in verification or repair command before deleting folders manually. It can replace missing or damaged files while preserving the rest of the installation. Verification may take several minutes, especially on a large game or a slower drive.

6. Close conflicts without leaving protection disabled
Exit overlays, recording tools, hardware monitors, game managers and other background applications, then try again. If ordinary closing does not help, follow the platform or publisher’s official clean-boot procedure rather than disabling random services. Security software can sometimes mistake a game executable for a threat. If logs confirm a block, use the security vendor’s instructions to create a narrow exception for the verified game file or folder, and restore normal protection afterward. Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled as a “fix.”
7. Restart, power-cycle or change storage on a console
For consoles, restart after updates and disconnect attached USB devices while testing. A full power cycle can clear a stalled system process. If the game is installed on external storage, move it to the console’s internal storage when the platform guidance recommends that for the case. Reinstall only after these simpler checks fail.
8. Escalate with a reproducible record
When the problem remains, collect the error code, a short description, the exact steps that reproduce it, the device and system version, the game and launcher version, and a screenshot or video if possible. PlayStation specifically asks for those details; the same record helps a publisher, launcher or console-support team isolate the fault.

Steam on a Windows PC
Recommended order
- Restart Windows and open Steam again.
- Check the game’s store page for minimum requirements and compare them with your PC.
- Install pending Windows, Steam and graphics-driver updates. Restart after a driver installation if prompted.
- Close overlays and background tools, including recording or monitoring software, and test with only Steam running.
- Verify the installation: open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Allow the process to finish; Steam may spend several minutes checking a large installation.
When Steam reports a missing executable
A missing-executable error can mean that files are damaged or that security software quarantined the game file. Check the security product’s detection or quarantine history first. If it identified the file, confirm that the game came from the legitimate Steam installation, follow the security vendor’s process for a narrowly scoped exception, and then run Steam’s integrity check so the correct file is restored. Do not begin by manually deleting the game directory; the built-in verification is the less destructive first step.

If verification does not solve it
Test after a clean restart with nonessential startup programs closed. Recheck the game’s requirements and the graphics driver, because a successful file check cannot correct hardware below minimum specifications or a driver-level incompatibility. If another Steam title launches normally, keep the investigation focused on this game’s requirements, files and account rather than changing the entire PC.
Epic Games Launcher on PC
Work through Epic’s launcher checklist
- Check Epic’s service-status page for incidents affecting sign-in, library or game launch.
- Open the launcher’s settings and install any available launcher update.
- Confirm that the PC meets the launcher and game requirements.
- Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache using Epic’s current support procedure, then restart the launcher.
- Update the graphics driver and restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Close background applications and test again. If needed, use the official clean-boot instructions for your version of Windows.
- Reinstall the launcher only after the preceding steps fail, and sign back in before testing the game.
Use administrator mode or fullscreen settings only in the right context
Epic’s documentation mentions administrator mode and disabling fullscreen optimizations in a section aimed at low frame rates. Those settings are not universal launch fixes. Consider them only when the documented symptom matches, and change one setting at a time so you can undo it if behavior worsens.
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
Restart, update and restore the license
- Restart the console and install any system-software update shown in Settings.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account that claimed or downloaded the game and that the network service is operating.
- If a padlock or license warning appears, restore licenses. On PS5, the control is under Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. On PS4, use Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
- For a subscription title, check that the subscription is active and that the game remains available in the catalog. For a purchased or claimed title, check transaction or claim history and any console-sharing arrangement that should provide access.
- If the game is on USB extended storage on PS5, move it to internal storage and test again.
Redownload only after the access checks
Delete and redownload the game if restarting, updating and restoring the license do not help. This removes the local installation, so ensure you can sign in to the owning account and have enough storage before starting. A redownload will not fix a service outage or an account that no longer has access.

Use those options only after ordinary troubleshooting fails and follow Sony’s on-screen instructions exactly; do not select an option that initializes or erases the console unless you understand its data consequences and have the required backups.

Xbox consoles
Apply the basic console sequence
- Open Settings and install any available console-system update.
- Disconnect attached USB devices temporarily, then restart the Xbox.
- Perform a full power cycle using the console’s normal power controls and test the game again.
- If the game is installed on an external drive, try moving it to internal storage, particularly when other titles on the internal drive launch normally.
- Reinstall the game only after the update, restart, power-cycle and storage tests fail.
Advanced account and local-data steps
EA’s cross-platform troubleshooting guidance also lists clearing the alternate MAC address and deleting local saved data for some Xbox cases. These actions are not interchangeable with a routine restart. Clear the alternate MAC address only when the current Xbox prompts and support guidance indicate it, and understand that deleting local saved data can affect the copy stored on the console. Confirm that your saves are synchronized or otherwise backed up before accepting a deletion prompt, then allow the console to resynchronize before launching the game.
Nintendo Switch
Install the system update shown by the console
Open System Settings, select System, choose System Update, and follow the prompts. Restart and test the game after the update completes. If the title is stored on a microSD card, check that the card is seated correctly and that the console recognizes it before deleting or redownloading software.
Interpret the 2026 version reports by region
Nintendo’s regional support pages do not report the same version detail. The Korean support page reports version 23.0.1, released October 1, 2026, as fixing slow software launch, suspension and closing times associated with version 23.0.0. Nintendo’s Japan page reports version 23.0.0 released September 10, 2026. Treat the 23.0.1 information as the Korean-page report, not as a universal version number for every region; install whatever update your own console offers.

Free does not always mean offline or anonymous
A game can cost nothing to download and still require a platform account, an initial claim, an online license check or a live service. Sign out and back in only when you know the credentials for the account that owns or claimed the title. If the platform is experiencing an authentication outage, repeated sign-ins can make the symptom look like a local failure.
Use the error wording as a guide
- Padlock or “cannot use this content” on PlayStation: verify the owning account, transaction or claim history, subscription status and the title’s current availability, then restore licenses when appropriate.
- “Not entitled,” “access denied” or an expired subscription: resolve the account or subscription issue before touching files.
- A game disappeared from a catalog: a subscription entitlement may have ended even though the software remains installed.
- The account is correct but access still fails: check service status and capture the error code for support.
When to reinstall—and when not to
Reinstall after local checks fail
Reinstallation is reasonable when verification or repair reports files it cannot replace, the installation is on unreliable external storage, or the platform’s official sequence specifically recommends a redownload. Ensure you have enough free space, know the owning account and have synchronized saves before removing the local copy.
Do not reinstall for an outage or license problem
A fresh download cannot repair a platform outage, a revoked subscription, an incorrect account or a system below the game’s requirements. Resolve those conditions first to avoid spending time and bandwidth on the same failure.
Prepare a useful support request
Include reproducible technical details
- Device model and operating-system or console-system version.
- Game title, edition, launcher or store, and whether other games launch.
- The account or subscription context, without sharing passwords or security codes.
- Exact error code or message, when it appears, and what happens after selecting Play.
- Steps already attempted, in order, including verification, updates, license restoration, storage moves or power cycles.
- A screenshot or short video showing the failure, with personal information hidden.
Describe one reproducible path
Write a short sequence such as “Start the launcher, select the game, choose Play, the window appears for two seconds, then closes with code …” rather than listing every change made to the device. Support can compare a reproducible path with known incidents and tell whether the next step is a repair, account action or platform recovery.

When a hardware upgrade is actually justified
Consider hardware only after comparing the game’s stated minimum requirements with your PC’s real processor, memory, graphics hardware, graphics memory and storage. A specific shortfall—such as insufficient memory or an unsupported graphics feature—supports a targeted upgrade decision. If the requirements are met and other games launch, changing hardware before checking files, drivers, security blocks and account access is unlikely to be the most efficient next step. Console owners generally cannot upgrade core hardware; use the supported system-update and storage paths instead.
