How to Fix Fortnite Crashes, Lag, and Long Loading Times

Fortnite problems fall into four different categories: a crash or freeze, low frame rate (FPS), network lag (latency, packet loss, or jitter), and a slow login or loading connection. The right fix depends on which symptom you have and whether you play on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch. Changing graphics settings will not repair an ISP outage, and replacing a router will not raise a computer’s frame rate.

Start by recording your platform, the exact error text, when the problem occurs, and whether it happens every time. Check Epic’s current Fortnite known-issues channels, status account, and Epic Games Status page before changing local settings. The following sequence is based on Epic Games Support guidance reviewed on October 13, 2026; those support pages did not display publication dates, so status and interface labels should be rechecked when you use them.

Identify the Fortnite problem before changing settings

Write down four details: your platform, the exact message on screen, whether the issue occurs at launch/loading or during a match, and whether it is constant or intermittent. Also note when it began and whether anything changed immediately beforehand, such as a game update, graphics-driver update, router move, or Windows update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search Epic’s Help Center for the exact error wording rather than a general description. Review the Fortnite Community Issues board, the Epic status account, and the Epic Games Status page. A service disruption or newly acknowledged bug cannot be repaired by reinstalling your game, and a local fix can obscure useful information while the service is degraded.

Fortnite closes, freezes, or shows a black screen Game, driver, file, hardware, or heat stability Capture the exact error, check requirements and known issues, then follow the PC or console sequence below.
Low frame rate, hitching, or stutter Rendering workload, background software, memory, storage, power, or cooling Check requirements and files, use conservative graphics settings, and inspect temperatures and power mode.

Long login or loading screen Connection to the login/game service, background software, drivers, or platform cache Check service status and the exact login message, then use the platform-specific loading steps.

Keep frame rate and network quality separate. A steady 120 FPS can still feel delayed when packet loss is present, while a perfect ping cannot prevent a computer from rendering at 20 FPS.

Fix PC crashes, errors, and launch failures

Epic’s PC troubleshooting path is an escalation sequence, not a promise that every step fixes every cause. Work from the least destructive checks toward reinstalls and data removal. Stop when the issue is resolved and record which change worked.

  1. Search the exact error. Copy the complete message, including any code, into Epic’s Help Center. Similar-looking errors can have different causes.
  2. Confirm the minimum requirements. Compare your processor, graphics hardware, memory, operating-system version, and available storage with Fortnite’s current requirements. A computer that ran an older season is not automatically suitable for a newer build.
  3. Verify game files in Epic Games Launcher. Open your Library, use Fortnite’s three-dot menu, choose Manage, and select Verify if that label is shown. The launcher checks the installation and replaces damaged or missing files without requiring a full reinstall.
  4. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache. Exit the launcher completely, including its background process, then use Epic’s current cache-clearing instructions for your operating system. Cache folders and menu labels can change between launcher versions; do not delete unrelated game data.
  5. Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver supplied for your GPU model and operating system, then restart the computer. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, note that timing before changing additional settings.
  6. Run the launcher as administrator. Close it, right-click the Epic Games Launcher shortcut, choose Run as administrator, and test Fortnite once. This changes permissions; it does not repair corrupted files or network routing.
  7. Disable competing background applications. Close overlays, recording tools, hardware monitors, browsers with heavy tabs, and other programs that consume CPU, memory, disk, or GPU resources. Re-enable them one at a time after testing so you can identify a conflict.
  8. Check the drive for errors. Use the error-checking utility provided by your operating system for the drive containing Fortnite. Back up important files first; a drive reporting errors can indicate a broader storage problem.
  9. Try another drive. If the game is installed on a drive with very little free space or suspected faults, install or move it to a healthy drive and test again.
  10. Follow Epic’s Fortnite-folder exclusion instructions only when appropriate. Security software can interfere with game files, but exclusions reduce protection. Use the exact folders and procedure Epic documents, and remove the exclusion if it does not help.
  11. Reinstall the launcher and then Fortnite. Reinstalling is time-consuming and consumes bandwidth, so do it after verification, cache, driver, and background-process checks have failed.
  12. Remove the local FortniteGame folder only as a late step. This can reset local configuration and may remove files you would otherwise preserve. Follow Epic’s current instructions and expect to redo local settings.

If the complete sequence fails, Epic directs players to the computer or hardware manufacturer. Include the exact error, Windows version, GPU and driver version, game-install drive, and the steps already attempted so support does not send you through the same checks again.

Fix black screens, freezes, and low FPS on PC

Start with a stable baseline

Confirm the minimum requirements and verify the files before tuning performance. In Fortnite’s video settings, set Quality Presets to Low and keep 3D Resolution at 100%. Test a complete match or the same repeatable location, then raise individual quality settings gradually. This isolates the setting that causes a performance or stability change instead of changing everything at once.

Keep the graphics driver current, close unnecessary background programs, and select an appropriate Windows power mode. On a laptop, connect the charger while testing; battery-saving modes can reduce CPU and GPU performance. Results depend on the particular processor, GPU, memory configuration, display resolution, and thermal condition. Epic cautions that its recommendations may improve performance only slightly or not at all on some systems.

Use Performance Mode when DirectX 12 is unstable

If crashes, freezing, or black screens begin while using DirectX 12, switch Fortnite to Performance Mode and test again. Epic also documents the launcher command argument -d3d12 -es31 for this troubleshooting path. Apply only the command and mode combination Epic currently documents for your version; do not add arbitrary launch arguments copied from unrelated guides.

Make sure Fortnite uses the fast GPU

Laptops and computers with integrated and discrete graphics can launch Fortnite on the lower-power adapter. In your operating system’s graphics settings or the GPU vendor’s control panel, assign Fortnite to the high-performance GPU. Restart the game after changing the assignment and verify that the discrete adapter is active while playing.

Check heat and airflow

If performance degrades after an extended session, or the game freezes only after the computer becomes hot, inspect cooling. Clear dust from vents and fan openings, keep the computer on a hard surface, and use a well-ventilated space. Do not block a laptop’s intake, and do not open a device if doing so would void its warranty or create an electrical risk.

Consider storage and memory only after free fixes

Epic says an SSD can help an older PC with hitches or stutters, and that having 6 GB of RAM or more can help the game fit in memory and reduce those symptoms on older systems. These are conditional, device-specific suggestions, not universal upgrade requirements. Check your motherboard, laptop, storage interface, operating-system support, and warranty before buying or installing hardware. An SSD will not correct packet loss, a server outage, or a graphics-driver crash.

Fix Fortnite crashes and performance problems on consoles

PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch use closed platforms, so PC-only instructions such as graphics-driver updates, Epic Games Launcher cache clearing, and Windows power-mode changes do not apply.

  1. Search the exact console error in Epic’s Help Center and check Epic’s current Fortnite known-issues and status channels.
  2. Install every available Fortnite update and the latest system software for the console.
  3. Clear the console’s cache using the platform maker’s current procedure. The menu path differs among PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch models.
  4. Fully power cycle the console: close Fortnite, shut the console down rather than leaving it in sleep/instant-on mode, disconnect power only as the platform’s instructions allow, wait, reconnect, and start it again.
  5. Reinstall Fortnite through the console’s own game-management screen if file corruption remains suspected. Ensure you know which account stores your progress before removing local data.

If the problem continues after updates, cache clearing, power cycling, and a reinstall, Epic recommends contacting PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo support because the platform manufacturer controls the operating system and hardware diagnostics.

Fix “Unable to login to Fortnite Servers. Please try again later” and long loading

Epic documents this message as appearing when Fortnite cannot load quickly enough to connect to its servers. It does not prove that every long loading screen has the same cause. First check for a service incident and confirm whether the delay happens at startup, account login, matchmaking, or when entering a particular experience.

On PC

  • Install the current graphics driver.
  • Close background applications that compete for CPU, memory, disk, or network access.
  • Confirm that the computer meets Fortnite’s minimum requirements.
  • Verify the game files in Epic Games Launcher.
  • If the message remains, follow the network checks in the next section rather than repeatedly reinstalling.

On a console

Clear the platform cache first, then install Fortnite and system updates. If the cache step does not help, use the platform’s connection troubleshooting and consider a reinstall or full power cycle. A long load caused by an Epic service incident will return until the service is restored, regardless of local changes.

Fix network lag, high ping, packet loss, and jitter

Know what the numbers mean

Epic defines latency, also called ping, as “the time it takes for data to travel from your device to a Fortnite server and back.” It is measured in milliseconds. Average ping is only one part of the experience: packet loss means data never arrives, and jitter means delay varies from packet to packet. A connection can show an acceptable average while still producing rubber-banding when loss or jitter spikes.

Epic’s guide says packet loss should be 0% and that consistent loss above about 1% can cause in-game problems. That figure is Epic’s troubleshooting threshold, not a universal independent benchmark. Measure both when the connection is quiet and while another person is streaming, uploading photos, downloading a game, or using a video call.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure the route to Fortnite

  1. Check Epic’s service status and ask your internet provider whether there is a local outage or degraded service.
  2. Use Epic’s published subregion endpoints and its Windows or macOS instructions to send 50 ping requests. Use the endpoint that corresponds to the matchmaking region you are testing.
  3. Record the average latency, packet-loss percentage, and variation between the fastest and slowest replies. Re-run the test under household load if lag appears only when other devices are busy.
  4. Compare those results with the ping shown inside Fortnite and note the specific Fortnite experience or playlist where the problem occurs.

The endpoint test uses ICMP, while Fortnite gameplay uses UDP. Epic cautions that some networks prioritize ICMP differently, so a normal ICMP result does not rule out trouble on the gameplay path. Send the provider or Epic support the endpoint, 50-request results, in-game ping, time of day, and whether the test was idle or busy.

Apply network fixes in reversible order

  1. Restart the modem and router. Use the manufacturer’s normal restart procedure and wait for the connection to stabilize.
  2. Test wired Ethernet. Connect the PC or console directly to the router with a suitable Ethernet cable, using an adapter if the device lacks an Ethernet port. This tests whether Wi-Fi signal loss or interference is adding delay; it cannot repair ISP routing or a Fortnite outage.
  3. Pause competing traffic. Stop large downloads, cloud backups, uploads, streams, and other high-bandwidth activity. If the problem disappears, congestion or queueing is a likely contributor.
  4. Try the in-game matchmaking subregion preference. A closer-looking region is not always the fastest route. Changing it can increase queue times or reduce match quality, so compare the measured ping and actual match behavior.
  5. Enable router QoS or gaming mode if available. Configure it carefully for the gaming device and test before adding more rules. Features and names vary by router.
  6. Improve router placement. Move it into an open, central position away from thick walls, enclosed cabinets, and sources of interference.
  7. Test Wi-Fi bands. The 2.4 GHz band reaches farther but is often more crowded; 5 GHz is generally faster but has shorter range and loses strength through walls. Choose the band that is stable at the playing location.
  8. Update router firmware. Follow the router maker’s procedure and save the current configuration first if the device supports a backup.
  9. Test another router only when a fault is plausible. Borrowing a known-good unit can separate router hardware from the ISP connection. Epic does not prescribe a particular router model.

Choose the next intervention by cost and reversibility

Intervention Cost and risk Use it when Do not expect it to fix
Status and exact-error checks Free; fully reversible A problem starts suddenly or affects many players. A failing drive, overheating GPU, or damaged local file.
Settings, background-app, and power checks Free; reversible FPS is low, stutter is repeatable, or a laptop is power-limited. ISP routing, packet loss, or a service outage.
File verification and cache clearing Free; usually reversible Launch errors, damaged downloads, or unusual loading behavior occur on PC. Insufficient hardware or a bad network path.
Ethernet test Low cost; reversible Lag changes with Wi-Fi distance or household traffic. High latency caused upstream of your router.
Reinstalling Fortnite or the launcher Time and bandwidth; disruptive Verification and configuration checks fail and corruption remains plausible. A platform-wide incident or unsupported hardware.
SSD, additional memory, or another router Hardware cost and compatibility risk Only after diagnosis points to storage/memory hitches or a faulty router. Every crash, every low-FPS system, or every high-ping connection.

When to escalate and what information to provide

Escalate to Epic after checking service status, reproducing the symptom, and completing the relevant platform sequence. For a PC case, provide the exact error, operating-system version, CPU, GPU and driver version, RAM amount, Fortnite drive, whether DirectX 12 or Performance Mode is selected, and the steps that changed the behavior. For a console case, include the console model, system version, Fortnite version, error text, and cache/update/reinstall results.

For network support, provide the ISP with the tested Epic subregion endpoint, 50-request latency and packet-loss results, jitter or range if shown, the in-game ping, time of day, and whether other household devices were active. Tell Epic which Fortnite experience has the problem and include the ICMP-versus-UDP limitation when interpreting the test. This evidence is more useful than saying only that “Fortnite is laggy.”

A compact recovery checklist

  • Identify whether the symptom is a crash, low FPS, long login/load, or network lag.
  • Record the exact message and check Epic’s live status and known-issues channels.
  • Use PC-only file, launcher, driver, graphics, drive, and background-process steps only on PC.
  • Use update, cache, power-cycle, reinstall, and platform-support steps on consoles.
  • For FPS problems, start at Low quality with 3D Resolution at 100%, then raise settings one at a time.
  • For DirectX 12 crashes or black screens, test Performance Mode and Epic’s documented -d3d12 -es31 argument.
  • For lag, measure ping, packet loss, and jitter at idle and under load; test Ethernet before buying hardware.
  • Reserve reinstalls and hardware purchases for cases supported by the preceding diagnosis.
