If your OLED gaming monitor flickers only while a game is using variable refresh rate (VRR), first turn VRR off temporarily and repeat the same scene. If the flicker stops, investigate sync settings, frame-rate behavior, and compatibility; if it continues, check the video signal, monitor settings, and hardware instead. Disabling VRR is a diagnostic step, not necessarily a permanent fix: it can bring back screen tearing.

First, work out when and how the flicker happens

Before changing settings, note whether you see brightness or gamma pulsing, brief blackouts or signal loss, or tearing. Record whether it happens in one game or across several, during gameplay or only in menus and loading screens, when frame rates drop, with HDR enabled, or in desktop use. Also note whether changing the connection changes the symptom. These clues help separate a VRR-related symptom from a broader signal or display problem; they do not identify a cause on their own.

VRR adjusts the display’s refresh behavior to match a game’s frame rate. Flicker that coincides with unstable frame timing or dropped frames is a recognized behavior, but the symptom alone does not establish that the monitor is defective. RTINGS describes a controlled DirectX test that varies frame times and measures output brightness across six OLED monitors. That describes the test cohort, not how often all OLED monitors flicker. Read RTINGS’ VRR flicker testing discussion.

Test whether VRR is involved

  1. Open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) and temporarily turn off its VRR, Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync, or G-SYNC control, if available.
  2. Repeat the same game, scene, and display mode. If the flicker stops, turn VRR back on only after checking the relevant driver settings and updates below.
  3. If the monitor’s control does not disable VRR, check the operating system and GPU control panel too. A Windows VRR setting may not disable sync enabled in the graphics driver.

MSI cautions that turning off Windows VRR alone may leave NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel driver-level sync active. Its guidance concerns MSI notebooks, so use it as a reminder to check each control exposed by your own system rather than as a universal menu guide. MSI also notes that disabling VRR can resolve flicker in unsupported games but may reintroduce tearing in supported games. See MSI’s VRR flicker guidance.

  • The Pantone Validated screen accurately reproduces 2100+ lifelike colors and 110+ skin tone shades
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth and more realistic scenes

If the symptom disappears with VRR fully off, the problem tracks VRR use, but that test cannot distinguish among the game, frame timing, driver configuration, and monitor compatibility. If it continues, go to signal and monitor checks.

Check the sync controls for your GPU

NVIDIA G-SYNC

Open NVIDIA Control Panel and go to Display > Set up G-SYNC. NVIDIA’s setup guidance covers enabling G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible, selecting fullscreen or windowed-and-fullscreen operation to match how you play, and enabling the setting for the selected display. Under Manage 3D Settings, check Monitor Technology and select G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible as appropriate. Menu availability and behavior depend on the display and driver. NVIDIA says the display-specific setting can also be used to test VRR on a display it has not validated as G-SYNC Compatible; this is setup guidance, not a guarantee against flicker. Consult NVIDIA’s G-SYNC setup and troubleshooting instructions.

If flicker occurs only in one game, test fullscreen and windowed modes separately. You can also temporarily disable G-SYNC to confirm whether the symptom tracks it. Dell advises disabling G-SYNC if it causes flicker on a monitor that is not G-SYNC Compatible; that recommendation applies to Dell and Alienware products, not every monitor. See Dell’s G-SYNC flicker guidance.

AMD FreeSync

In AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, open Settings > Display and check the active display’s FreeSync status or tier and reported range. AMD also documents per-game choices of AMD Optimized, On, and Off. If FreeSync is unavailable or behaves unexpectedly, check the monitor’s picture, color, or media preset: AMD warns that some presets and custom settings can disable FreeSync. Consult the manual for your exact monitor before changing presets. AMD’s illustrated instructions are based on Adrenalin Edition 23.9.1, and the company notes that menus may differ by system; the page was last updated March 3, 2025. If flicker continues with VRR off, check the signal and monitor

Use the monitor’s native resolution and a refresh rate listed as supported for that exact model. Then work through these checks:

  • Update the graphics driver and the monitor firmware using the manufacturers’ instructions for your hardware.
  • Reseat the video cable at both ends. If possible, test with a known-good, compatible cable and the monitor’s other supported input. A cable fault can cause flicker or signal dropouts, but changing a cable is not a fix for frame-time-related VRR flicker when the signal is otherwise stable.
  • Turn off monitor overclocking or motion-blur features such as MRPT or ULMB if your model offers them, then retest.
  • Run the monitor’s built-in self-test or diagnostic, if available, and check for nearby electrical devices that could interfere with the signal.

These are among Dell’s recommended checks; availability of features and the diagnostic process varies by model. See Dell’s monitor flicker troubleshooting steps.

For a model-specific example, the Alienware AW3423DWF manual identifies 3440 × 1440 as its native resolution and recommends using 60 Hz or higher, disabling VRR/G-SYNC/FreeSync, updating drivers and firmware, trying another cable, and checking for nearby electrical devices. Those directions and resolution apply to the AW3423DWF, not OLED monitors generally. Open the AW3423DWF manual’s troubleshooting section.

When to contact the manufacturer

If the built-in self-test passes, Dell recommends checking the rest of the system, including the BIOS, graphics card, and drivers. If flicker remains after VRR is disabled and basic signal checks are complete—especially if it appears in the monitor’s own menus or with more than one known-good input and cable—follow the manufacturer’s diagnostic and support process for your exact model. A symptom alone cannot determine whether a particular panel needs repair.
