How to Fix Fitbit Syncing and Tracking Problems

Most Fitbit problems fall into one of two branches: the device has recorded data but cannot transfer it to your phone, or the sensor did not capture a particular reading. Start by keeping the Fitbit beside the phone, making sure no other nearby phone is connected to it, and requesting a manual sync. If syncing works but heart rate, sleep, or another vital is still missing, troubleshoot fit, movement, sleep conditions, settings, and model support instead of repeating Bluetooth fixes.

The sequence below follows Google Health support guidance, with separate instructions for Android, iPhone, Fitbit trackers, and Pixel Watch. App names and screen labels can change, so use the current labels shown for your device and phone.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

After each change, check the app’s last-sync time and note what happened. That simple checkpoint prevents you from changing several things at once and helps you tell a connection problem from a sensor limitation.

First identify whether the failure is syncing or tracking

A Fitbit can store measurements on the device while the phone connection is broken. Conversely, a successful sync cannot create a measurement that the sensor never captured. Use the symptom that you see to choose the right branch.

What you observe Likely branch Start with
New steps, workouts, or sleep data do not appear in the app Syncing Proximity, the one-device connection, Bluetooth, and phone internet
The app updates, but heart rate is blank or erratic Tracking Band fit, arm movement, and the heart-rate setting on supported older models
Sleep or other vitals are absent Tracking, with syncing also worth checking Recent sync, skin contact, sleep duration, movement, and model support
A Pixel Watch updates only after you open it or interact with it Watch background connectivity Battery Saver and Bedtime mode

If the app shows an old “last synced” time, complete the sync sequence first. If the last-sync time is current but a metric is missing, move to the metric-specific section. This avoids treating every missing number as a Bluetooth failure.

Also distinguish a single delayed update from a persistent failure. One missed refresh can clear after the manual-sync and restart steps; repeated failures after several attempts point to pairing, permission, software, or device-specific support issues.

Fix a Fitbit that will not sync

1. Put the Fitbit next to the phone and release other connections

Keep the device close to the phone during syncing. Google’s help center states: “Important: Fitbit device must remain near your phone to sync.” A Fitbit device can sync with only one device at a time, so check nearby phones and tablets signed in to the same account. A second device may have retained the Bluetooth connection even if you are not actively using its app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Move the Fitbit and the phone into the same room, preferably within arm’s reach.
  • Temporarily move or disable Bluetooth on another nearby phone or tablet that uses the account.
  • Make sure you are trying to sync the intended Fitbit, not an older device still listed in the account.
  • If you recently changed phones, keep the old phone away while testing so it cannot retain the connection.

Once the other device is out of the way, leave the Fitbit beside the phone for the rest of the checks. A nearby tablet can matter just as much as a second phone, even if it is not displaying Fitbit data.

2. Request a manual sync

Open the Google Health app with the Fitbit nearby, go to the device or connection screen, and use the refresh or sync control. The exact navigation label can change between app versions and phone platforms. Wait for the app to finish rather than closing it immediately.

Check the last-sync time after the request. If it changes, the connection is working and you can investigate any individual metric that remains absent. If it does not change, continue with the connection checks. Record whether the app shows a connection error, a spinning refresh indicator, or simply an unchanged time; those outcomes help you describe the problem accurately to support.

3. Reset Bluetooth and verify phone internet

Bluetooth carries the local connection, while Wi-Fi or cellular data lets the app reach its online service. Both are needed for a normal sync.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the phone’s quick settings or Settings app and confirm Bluetooth is on.
  2. Confirm that the phone has working Wi-Fi or cellular internet by loading a webpage or another online service.
  3. Turn Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it on again.
  4. Return to the Google Health app and repeat the manual sync request with the Fitbit nearby.

Do not interpret a successful Bluetooth pairing screen as proof that data has synchronized; always check the app’s last-sync time. A phone can remember a Fitbit while the app still lacks internet access, and a working internet connection cannot help if Bluetooth discovery is disabled.

If you are testing on cellular data, make sure the phone has a usable signal. If you switch between Wi-Fi and cellular during the test, run a fresh manual sync after the connection settles rather than relying on an earlier attempt.

4. Restart both devices

Restart the Fitbit using the model’s normal power or restart control, then restart the phone. After both devices come back on, keep them close, enable Bluetooth and internet, and request another manual sync. A restart is an early troubleshooting step; it does not erase the Fitbit’s stored data.

Complete the restart of both devices before judging the result. Opening the app while the phone is still reconnecting can produce a stale status. Once the app is open again, check the last-sync time and whether the intended device appears, not merely whether Bluetooth lists a Fitbit.

5. Install available updates

Check for updates in three places:

  • The phone’s operating-system update screen.
  • The Google Health app’s listing in the phone’s app store.
  • The Fitbit device update screen shown for your model in the app.

Install an offered update, restart if prompted, and try syncing again. App labels and update locations vary by operating system, so follow the current on-screen instructions for your phone.

Check all three locations because updating only the app does not update the phone operating system or the Fitbit firmware. Keep the device near the phone while an update or sync is running, and do not assume that an update has completed until the app reports completion or the device returns to its normal screen.

6. Check Android permissions and power restrictions

Android permissions can prevent discovery even when Bluetooth appears enabled. In the phone’s Settings, open the app-permission page for the Google Health app and allow the requested Nearby devices access. The Android troubleshooting guidance also lists Location permission.

On Android 11 and earlier, Google says Bluetooth scanning is bundled with Location services. If that is your Android version, turn on Location services as well as granting the app’s Location permission. Battery Saver can contribute to persistent connection or location prompts, so temporarily turn it off while testing the sync.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After changing a permission or power setting, force the app to close, reopen it, and make a fresh manual sync request. Android menus differ by manufacturer, but the relevant controls are normally under Settings → Apps → Google Health → Permissions and Battery.

Do not treat Location as a universal requirement for every phone. The Android 11-and-earlier Bluetooth-scanning rule is version-specific. On newer Android releases, follow the permissions the current app setup requests, and do not copy Android instructions to an iPhone.

7. Charge the Fitbit and remove stale pairings only if earlier steps fail

Low power can interrupt the official sync sequence, so place the Fitbit on its charger and allow it to charge before trying again. Confirm that the charging contacts are seated and that the device shows a charging indication.

If the connection still fails, Google’s guidance recommends cleaning up old pairings:

  1. In the Google Health app, remove other Fitbit devices that are no longer used with the account.
  2. In the phone’s Bluetooth settings, remove obsolete Fitbit entries.
  3. Restart the phone and Fitbit.
  4. Open the app, follow its current pairing flow for the intended device, and request a sync.

Remove only entries that belong to unused or stale devices. Do not delete the active Fitbit from the account unless the app’s pairing instructions specifically require it. Pairing cleanup is deliberately later in the sequence because removing the wrong entry can create another setup task without fixing the original issue.

  • Made of ABS plastic and TPE cable, lightweight, stable and durable, giving you a good charging experience.
  • 3.3ft long charging cord provides you convenient use and the flexibility you need.

Charging and pairing solve different failure modes. If the device is fully charged and the app sees it but cannot upload data, a replacement cable is unlikely to help; continue with connection and account checks instead.

8. Reinstall the app as a later step

Reinstalling the Google Health app is not a guaranteed fix and should come after proximity, Bluetooth, permissions, restarts, updates, charging, and stale-pairing checks. Before uninstalling, confirm that the phone still meets the app’s current requirements and that you know the account sign-in details. Install the current app-store version, sign in, pair the intended Fitbit if requested, and test a manual sync.

Reinstallation changes the phone app, not the physical sensor. It therefore makes sense only after simpler causes have been ruled out. If the phone no longer meets the current app requirements, installation or pairing may remain unavailable regardless of the Fitbit’s condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Apply Pixel Watch advice only to Pixel Watch

Pixel Watch has watch-specific background-data behavior that does not apply to every Fitbit tracker. Google’s sync guidance says Battery Saver and Bedtime mode can limit background data connectivity. Data may sync after you interact with the watch or after you turn those modes off.

For a Pixel Watch, temporarily disable those modes, interact with the watch, keep it near the phone, and run a manual sync. Do not assume that turning off Bedtime mode is relevant to a non-watch Fitbit tracker.

If the watch syncs immediately after interaction, that observation points to background connectivity rather than a missing sensor reading. Restore your preferred power modes after testing, then confirm whether background updates continue.

Android and iPhone checks are not identical

Check Android iPhone
Bluetooth and internet Confirm Bluetooth plus Wi-Fi or cellular data; toggle Bluetooth off and on. Confirm Bluetooth plus Wi-Fi or cellular data; toggle Bluetooth off and on.
Permissions Review Nearby devices and Location permissions. Android 11 and earlier also requires Location services for Bluetooth scanning. Use the app and iOS permission screens that the current setup flow presents.
Power settings Battery Saver can contribute to connection or location prompts; disable it temporarily while testing. Follow the current iOS background-activity and Bluetooth prompts shown for the app.
Stale pairings Remove unused Fitbit devices from the account and old entries from Bluetooth settings if earlier checks fail. Remove obsolete pairings only when the current app’s troubleshooting flow directs you to do so.

Do not apply Android’s Location-services requirement to an iPhone. On either platform, keep the Fitbit near the phone and verify the last-sync time after each change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Platform steps also differ in wording and order. If an iPhone or Android prompt appears during setup, follow that current prompt rather than looking for an identically named menu from another operating system. The goal is the same—Bluetooth access, app connectivity, and a single active pairing—but the controls are not interchangeable.

Fix missing or unreliable heart-rate readings

Heart-rate problems are sensor and wearing-condition problems unless the app’s last-sync time is also stale. A sync repair cannot restore a reading that the optical sensor could not obtain.

Wear the band securely

Fit the band snugly enough that it does not slide around during normal use, while remaining comfortable. A loose device can lose consistent skin contact and produce gaps or unstable readings. Recheck the fit after changing wrist position or tightening the band for exercise.

  • Made of ABS plastic and TPE cable, lightweight, stable and durable, giving you a good charging experience.
  • 3.3ft long charging cord provides you convenient use and the flexibility you need.

Use the same fit check when a reading is intermittent rather than completely absent. A device that works at rest but loses readings after the band shifts is giving you a wearing-condition clue, not necessarily a connection clue. Keep the sensor in reliable contact with the skin throughout the period you want measured.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce interference from vigorous arm movement

Vigorous arm movement can interfere with the heart-rate signal. If a reading disappears during a high-motion activity, keep the device positioned securely and compare it again during a period of steadier movement. This does not prove that the Fitbit is defective; it identifies a condition in which the sensor may have difficulty.

Compare like with like: check the reading during steady movement or rest after confirming the fit, then sync again. If the app has a current last-sync time but only high-motion intervals are missing, continue with sensor-condition checks rather than repeatedly toggling Bluetooth.

Check the heart-rate setting on relevant older models

Some older Fitbit models expose a heart-rate setting that can be disabled or configured differently. Open the device settings shown for your exact model in the app and verify that heart-rate tracking is enabled where the option exists. Do not assume every model has the same setting or menu.

Model-specific menus matter here. The absence of a heart-rate setting does not by itself indicate a fault, and enabling a setting on one generation does not prove that another generation supports the same feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix missing sleep and other vitals

For sleep-related vitals, first verify that the Fitbit has synced recently. If the last-sync time is current, check the conditions that allow the sensor to collect the metric.

  • Skin contact: The device must remain in reliable contact with your skin while you sleep.
  • Sleep duration: A short or interrupted sleep period may not meet the conditions required for a sleep-related reading.
  • Movement: Movement during sleep can affect whether a metric is recorded or interpreted.
  • Model capability: Fitbit features differ by device generation. Confirm that your exact model supports the metric you are looking for.

A missing vital therefore has two separate questions: did the device transfer recent data, and does this device support and capture that particular measurement under the night’s conditions? Answer them in that order.

For example, if the app has not synced since yesterday, missing sleep data is still a sync problem. If it synced after waking but the expected vital is absent, investigate skin contact, the length and interruptions of sleep, movement, and whether the model offers that metric. Repeating a Bluetooth reset will not add a feature the device does not have.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

When a charging cable is relevant

Charging is part of Google’s documented sync troubleshooting sequence, but a replacement cable addresses only a charging fault. Consider one only when the Fitbit is not charging or the existing cable is damaged. Verify compatibility with the exact Fitbit model before buying or using a cable; a cable for another generation may not fit or charge correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A different cable will not fix Bluetooth, phone permissions, stale pairings, missing internet, or a wrist-sensor reading problem. Establish that charging is the failure before treating a cable as the solution. If the Fitbit shows that it is charging normally, return to the sync or tracking branch instead of buying accessories.

What not to assume

  • A current Bluetooth pairing does not guarantee that the app has uploaded data.
  • A successful sync does not guarantee that every Fitbit model records every vital.
  • Reinstalling the app, factory resetting the device, or replacing the Fitbit is not documented as a guaranteed fix.
  • Pixel Watch Battery Saver and Bedtime mode guidance should not be applied to every Fitbit tracker.
  • Android Location guidance is not universal; Android 11 and earlier has the specific Bluetooth-scanning requirement.
  • A replacement charging cable is relevant only when charging itself is failing and the cable matches the exact model.
  • One missing metric does not prove that the whole Fitbit failed; check the last-sync time and the metric’s wearing conditions separately.

When to contact Google/Fitbit support

Contact Google/Fitbit customer support after you have completed the applicable documented steps: proximity and single-device checks, manual sync, Bluetooth and internet verification, restarts, updates, platform permissions, charging, and stale-pairing cleanup. Include the Fitbit model, phone model and operating-system version, app version if visible, the last-sync time, and which steps changed the behavior. That information helps support distinguish a connection failure from a device-specific tracking limitation.

For a tracking complaint, also describe the metric, when it is missing, how the band was fitted, whether there was vigorous movement, how long you slept if it concerns sleep, and whether the model is supposed to support that metric. For a sync complaint, note whether another phone or tablet was nearby and whether the phone had internet access.

Do not factory-reset or replace the device solely because one sync attempt failed. Escalation is appropriate when the Fitbit remains unable to sync after the sequence, or when a supported metric is consistently absent despite secure fit, adequate sleep conditions, and current software.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my Fitbit device sync even though Bluetooth says it is connected?

Bluetooth pairing is only the local connection. Keep the Fitbit near the phone, make sure no other phone or tablet is holding the Fitbit connection, confirm Wi-Fi or cellular internet, toggle Bluetooth off and on, and request a manual sync. Check the app’s last-sync time rather than relying on the pairing status.

Does Fitbit need Location turned on to sync?

On Android 11 and earlier, Google says Bluetooth scanning is bundled with Location services, so turn on Location services and grant the app’s Location permission. Do not apply that Android-specific requirement to an iPhone; follow the permissions shown by the current iOS setup flow.

What should I do if my Fitbit syncs but heart rate is missing?

Treat it as a tracking issue first. Wear the band snugly so it does not slide, reduce interference from vigorous arm movement, and check the heart-rate setting if your exact older model provides one. If the app’s last-sync time is stale, repair syncing as well.

Why are my sleep vitals missing after a successful sync?

Confirm that the device synced recently, then check skin contact during sleep, sleep duration, movement, and whether your exact Fitbit model supports that vital. A successful sync cannot create a measurement the sensor did not capture or a feature the model does not provide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy a replacement Fitbit charging cable?

Only if the Fitbit is not charging or the existing cable is damaged. Verify exact model compatibility. A cable cannot fix Bluetooth, permissions, internet access, stale pairings, or wrist-sensor tracking.

When should I contact Fitbit support?

Escalate after the applicable proximity, one-device, manual-sync, Bluetooth, internet, restart, update, permission, charging, and stale-pairing steps fail. Provide the model, phone and operating-system versions, app version if visible, last-sync time, symptom, and steps already tried.

The Bottom Line

Start with the sync basics: keep the Fitbit beside one phone, verify Bluetooth and internet, manually sync, restart, update, and check platform-specific permissions. If the app is current but a reading is missing, switch branches and check fit, movement, sleep conditions, settings, and model support. Charge or replace a cable only for a charging problem, and contact Google/Fitbit support when the documented sequence does not restore syncing or a supported metric.
