Start by finding the point where the data disappears. If the Fitbit device’s latest steps, sleep, heart rate or workouts are missing in Google Health, fix the device-to-phone connection: keep the Fitbit nearby, charge it, check Bluetooth and internet access, review Android permissions and background limits, then manually sync and restart both devices. If the data is already visible in Google Health but absent from another app, Fitbit is probably syncing correctly; unlink and reconnect that separate app instead.
Google now calls the former Fitbit app the Google Health app. Older instructions and screenshots may still say “Fitbit app,” but the troubleshooting flow is the same. The menu labels below reflect current Google Health guidance; phone manufacturers can rename Android settings.

1. Identify which connection is failing
There are two different sync paths, and treating the wrong one wastes time:
| What you see | Likely break point | Use this part of the guide |
|---|---|---|
| Google Health shows an old “last synced” time or no new Fitbit measurements | Fitbit device to phone or Google Health | Sections 2 through 7 |
| New Fitbit measurements are visible in Google Health, but a connected exercise, health or journal app is missing them | Google Health to the separate app | Section 8 |
| Only old account history is missing after changing accounts | Fitbit-to-Google account migration or retention, not Bluetooth | Section 9 |
Open Google Health and compare a measurement you can verify on the device with the newest entry shown in the app. A stale value in Google Health means you should stay with the device-sync steps. Seeing that value in Google Health proves the first connection worked, so repeatedly re-pairing the wearable will not repair a downstream app.

2. Put the Fitbit in a state where syncing can work
Keep the device close
Place the Fitbit within a few feet of the phone while troubleshooting. Bluetooth Low Energy is the normal phone connection for Fitbit trackers and watches. Walls, a different floor, a bag left in another room, or a second phone that is closer can interrupt discovery. Leave the phone unlocked for the first attempt and keep Google Health open in the foreground.
Charge before trying again
A nearly empty battery can prevent a reliable transfer. Attach the Fitbit to its charger, wait for the charging indication, and retry while it remains connected. Chargers are model-specific; if you need a replacement, confirm the exact Fitbit model and compatible cable or dock rather than assuming a generic cable will fit.
Check the phone’s connection
Turn Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again. Confirm that the phone has working Wi-Fi or cellular data by loading a page in another app. Bluetooth carries the local device link, while internet access lets Google Health finish sending and storing the data. Do not keep toggling airplane mode if it disables the connection you are trying to test.

Fitbit trackers and watches normally sync through Bluetooth Low Energy. Fitbit Aria and Aria 2 scales use Wi-Fi directly, so a scale that is not uploading measurements needs its Wi-Fi network and account connection checked rather than a phone Bluetooth re-pair. Keep the scale in range of the configured Wi-Fi network and use the scale’s setup flow if its network has changed.
Temporarily remove power-saving barriers
Battery Saver, Extreme Battery Saver, Bedtime mode and similar manufacturer features can pause background Bluetooth or network activity. Turn those modes off for the test, or interact with the Fitbit by pressing a button or checking its screen, then open Google Health and retry. Restore your preferred power settings after a successful sync and use the background settings in the next section to avoid an ongoing conflict.

3. Fix Android permissions and background limits
Android can allow the app to open normally while preventing it from discovering the wearable or running long enough to synchronize. Exact wording differs on Pixel, Samsung, Motorola and other phones, but the relevant controls are the same.
Android 12 and newer: allow Nearby Devices
- Open Settings and go to Apps (sometimes Apps & notifications).
- Select Google Health, then Permissions.
- Allow Nearby devices. This permission lets the app discover a nearby watch or tracker without granting GPS location access.
- Return to Google Health, place the Fitbit beside the phone and try a manual sync.
Nearby Devices is the important Android 12-and-later permission for watch discovery. Enabling GPS location for every phone is not required merely because a Fitbit needs Bluetooth scanning.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Android 11 and earlier: check Location services
On Android 11 and earlier, Bluetooth scanning is bundled with Location services. Open Settings → Location and turn Location on while pairing or syncing, then confirm Google Health has the location permission it requests under Settings → Apps → Google Health → Permissions. This setting enables the operating system’s Bluetooth scan; it does not mean Google Health must use your location as a fitness measurement.
Permit background data
- Open Settings → Apps → Google Health → Mobile data or Data usage.
- Enable Background data. If your phone has a separate Unrestricted data usage switch, enable it for Google Health when Data Saver is on.
- Open Battery or App battery usage for Google Health.
- Choose Unrestricted, Allow background activity or the equivalent option instead of Restricted.
Some phones put these controls under Settings → Battery → Background usage limits, Sleeping apps or an automatic app-management screen. If you cannot find an equivalent switch, use the phone maker’s support instructions; the names and paths are not standardized by Android.
Google’s Android guidance explains the reason for these permissions: “The Google Health app runs in the background to keep you connected with certain Google Health app features.” Restricting that background work can leave a wearable apparently paired while its data remains stale.

4. Trigger a sync yourself, then restart cleanly
Manual sync from the main screen
- Put the charged Fitbit next to the phone and keep Bluetooth and internet access on.
- Open Google Health.
- On the main screen, pull down until a progress indicator appears, then release.
- Wait for the indicator to finish before checking the newest measurement. Large gaps in history can take longer than a single live reading.
Use the Connections menu when available
In current versions, open Connections and choose Sync. The precise placement can vary by app version, but the command performs the same manual request. If the screen reports that no device is found, return to the proximity, permission and power checks instead of repeatedly tapping Sync.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRestart in a controlled order
- Close Google Health, restart the phone, and wait until Android has fully loaded.
- Restart the Fitbit using the model’s on-device restart command. A restart is not the same as a factory reset and should not erase stored measurements.
- Turn Bluetooth back on if it was disabled, open Google Health, and run one manual sync.
Restarting clears a stuck Bluetooth session and a phone process that has stopped responding in the background. It does not recover measurements that were never recorded or that were removed from an account.
5. Update the software before changing the pairing
Install pending updates
- Check the phone’s system update screen and install any available Android or iOS update that your device supports.
- Update Google Health from the phone’s app store.
- Install Fitbit firmware updates offered by Google Health while the device is charged and nearby.
Keep the phone awake and the Fitbit on its charger during a firmware update. Interrupting an update can create a different problem from ordinary sync failure, so allow the process to complete before testing.
Remove a competing phone or tablet
A Fitbit account can be signed in on more than one phone or tablet, but a nearby secondary device can claim the Bluetooth connection. If an old phone, tablet or work device is still using the same account, open its Google Health app and remove the device pairing there, or move it out of Bluetooth range and turn its Bluetooth off. Then retry on the phone you have chosen as the primary device.
6. Reconnect the Fitbit only after the simpler checks fail
Re-pairing is a later escalation because it can require permissions again and may temporarily hide the device while setup runs. Use it when proximity, charging, permissions, manual sync, restart, updates and competing-device checks have not solved the problem.

- 3.3ft long charging cord provides you convenient use and the flexibility you need.
- In Google Health, open the device or connection settings and choose the option to disconnect or remove the Fitbit.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings, select the old Fitbit entry and choose Forget or Unpair. Do not try to complete the entire setup from the generic Bluetooth screen.
- Restart the phone and the Fitbit.
- Open Google Health, choose the add-device or connect-device flow, and follow the model-specific pairing instructions.
- Grant Nearby Devices or Location permission when Android requests it, and allow the background settings described earlier.
- Run a manual sync and verify that a new reading appears in Google Health.
Use the account that originally owned the Fitbit. Pairing a device to a different Google account can make it look as though historical data has vanished even when the wearable itself is working.
Reinstall Google Health as a final app-level step
If the current app remains unable to discover the Fitbit after a clean disconnect and re-pair, uninstall and reinstall Google Health, sign in to the correct Google account, grant its requested permissions, and add the device again. Reinstallation removes local app state; it does not recreate account history that was never uploaded. Complete the reinstall only after recording which account you use and confirming that the device is charged.
7. Match the symptom to the likely cause
| Symptom | What to check first | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Last sync time is old and no new steps appear | Proximity, charge, Bluetooth, internet, Nearby Devices or Location permission, then manual sync | That the Fitbit must be factory-reset |
| Steps appear but sleep is missing | Whether the device recorded the sleep period, whether it was worn securely, and whether a later sync completed | That every missing metric is a connection failure |
| Only a scale reading is absent | Scale Wi-Fi and account configuration | That phone Bluetooth troubleshooting applies to Aria or Aria 2 |
| Sync works only while Google Health is open | Background data, battery restrictions, Data Saver, Battery Saver and Bedtime mode | That foreground syncing proves background permissions are correct |
| The device is missing from the pairing screen | Bluetooth state, permission, charge level and another nearby phone using the device | That deleting the app is the first fix |
| Data is in Google Health but absent from another app | That app’s connection, authorization and import status | That re-pairing the Fitbit will repair the downstream service |
8. When Google Health has the data but another app does not
First confirm the newest Fitbit measurement is visible in Google Health. That check separates a healthy wearable sync from a downstream integration problem.
- Open the connected app and inspect its account or integrations page.
- Unlink Google Health or Fitbit from that app, following its sign-out or disconnect instructions.
- Close and reopen both apps, then reconnect the integration from the connected app’s official setup screen.
- Approve the requested data categories and account authorization. If the app offers a date range or import switch, enable the range you need.
- Wait for the import to complete and compare a specific timestamp or measurement rather than expecting every historical field to appear instantly.
If the data remains absent while Google Health continues to show it, contact the developer of the separate app. Its import schedule, supported data types and authorization errors are outside the Fitbit device link. Avoid deleting Google Health data while diagnosing a partner-app problem.
9. Check account migration before blaming Bluetooth
Google’s privacy FAQ says Fitbit-account access ended after May 19, 2026, and that Fitbit users needed to move their account to Google to continue using the service. It also says data from accounts that were not moved could be downloaded or deleted before Google began processing data deletions on July 15, 2026. These are account-policy dates, not sync outage dates.

If an older history set is missing, verify which Google account received the migration and whether the Fitbit account was moved before the deadline. A new Bluetooth sync cannot restore account data that was not migrated or retained. Likewise, signing into a different Google account can show an empty or incomplete history even though the device is currently connecting normally.
10. iPhone and iPad users
The Android permission names above do not map directly to iOS. Keep the Fitbit near the iPhone or iPad, charge it, verify Bluetooth and internet access, open Google Health and pull down to sync, then restart and update both devices. Use Google’s current iOS troubleshooting guide for the exact iOS permission and background settings for your version. Do not enable Android-only Nearby Devices or Location controls on an iPhone; they do not exist there.
11. When to stop troubleshooting and escalate
Escalate after you have identified the failing link and completed the matching path:
Recommended Free Tools
- Device-to-Google Health: provide the Fitbit model, phone model and operating-system version, Google Health version, last successful sync time, battery state, and whether another phone is paired. Include whether manual sync finds the device after a clean re-pair.
- Google Health-to-another app: tell that app’s developer that the measurement is visible in Google Health, identify the missing data type and date, and report the result of unlinking and reconnecting.
- Account history: confirm the Google account used for migration and the account’s migration status before asking support to investigate missing records.
This information prevents support from sending you through Bluetooth steps when the actual gap is an integration or account-history issue.
Quick Recap
12. A practical order to follow
- Decide whether the data is missing in Google Health or only in a connected app.
- Keep the Fitbit close, charge it, restore Bluetooth and internet access, and disable temporary power-saving modes.
- On Android, grant Nearby Devices on Android 12 or newer; on Android 11 or earlier, check Location services and the app’s location permission.
- Allow Google Health background data and unrestricted background battery use.
- Open Google Health and manually sync from the main screen or Connections → Sync.
- Restart the phone and Fitbit, then install pending phone, app and firmware updates.
- Remove competing nearby pairings and retry on one primary phone.
- Disconnect, forget and reconnect the Fitbit through Google Health; reinstall the app only afterward.
- If Google Health already contains the data, unlink and reconnect the separate app and contact its developer if the import still fails.
- If only old history is missing, verify account migration and retention rather than expecting Bluetooth to restore it.
