If your Final Fantasy XIV hotbar suddenly shows another job’s actions, check the hotbar page number before rebuilding anything. A changed page can make Hotbar 1 appear to have been replaced by Hotbar 2. If the page number is correct and settings really disappeared, use the appropriate character or client backup: character backups cover HUD, hotbars, cross hotbars, and keybinds, while client backups cover system settings and shared macros.
The important distinction is between a display or input problem, a missing local configuration, and genuinely lost saved data. The same symptom can come from each one, so work through the least destructive checks first. Do not delete configuration files or reinstall while you are still trying to determine which category is affected.

The fastest explanation for “my actions were replaced” is that the selected hotbar changed. Final Fantasy XIV stores multiple hotbar pages, and each page can contain a different action layout. Cycling from one page to another does not delete the first page; it changes which page is displayed and used.

- Look at the number displayed next to the hotbar that appears wrong.
- Compare it with the page you normally use. If you expected Hotbar 1 but the display shows Hotbar 2, switch back to Hotbar 1 using your assigned hotbar-cycle controls.
- Test the bar with the correct page selected before changing any actions. If the original layout returns, no restoration is needed.
This check also applies to cross hotbars on a controller. A page change can be triggered by an accidental key press, controller input, or a changed keybind. Do not overwrite a working page while diagnosing what is only a page-selection problem.

Check the hotbar-cycle commands
Open System > Keybind and inspect the entries named Cycle through Hotbars (Up) and Cycle through Hotbars (Down). Selecting an entry highlights it; the next key or button press is registered as that command’s shortcut. Confirm that the assigned inputs are the ones you intend to use and that an easily pressed key or controller direction has not been assigned accidentally.
If the page changes again immediately after you return to the expected number, temporarily note or remove the conflicting shortcut, then test in a safe area. A recurring page change points to input or keybind behavior rather than erased action data. Check whether a keyboard key, mouse button, gamepad direction, or controller combination is sending the cycle command when you do not expect it.
Determine whether the problem is limited to one bar or one job
Switch to another hotbar page and, if practical, another job. If only one page displays the unexpected actions, the issue is probably page selection or a partial layout change. If every job on the same computer has the same display, sound, input, or accessibility change, inspect client-level settings instead of repeatedly restoring one character. If one character is affected while another still looks correct, character settings and character-specific backups are the more relevant path.

Many Final Fantasy XIV configuration values are stored locally on the client. They are not automatically present when you move to a different computer, operating system, console, or other client environment. A setting that appears to have vanished may therefore be absent from the environment you are using, rather than deleted from every copy of your character data.
The game separates character-related settings from client-wide settings. This distinction determines both where you look for the setting and which backup can restore it.

Character and client backups are separate. Restoring a character backup will not automatically restore every display, audio, accessibility, or shared-macro choice, and restoring client settings is not a substitute for a character hotbar backup. Identify the setting category before selecting a restore command.
Use the scope of the symptom as a clue
- One character, HUD, or hotbar: start with Character Configuration and the server-backed character settings route.
- Several characters on one client: inspect System Configuration and client settings.
- Only a different computer or platform: check whether the settings were transferred; local files do not automatically follow you.
- Only the visible page changed: check the hotbar number and cycle commands before restoring anything.
Inspect the correct settings menu before restoring anything
Character Configuration
Use Character Configuration for character-specific behavior, user interface layout, and hotbar controls. This is the first place to inspect when only one character’s HUD, hotbars, cross hotbars, or related behavior looks wrong.
Review the HUD layout and hotbar pages without moving actions until you know whether the issue is a page selection, visibility option, or genuinely missing data. If the bar is hidden, displayed in an unexpected location, or showing a different page, correcting the layout or page selection may solve the problem without a restore.

System Configuration
Use System Configuration for system-level choices such as display, sound, graphics, mouse, gamepad, theme, and accessibility. If several characters on one client show the same display, audio, input, or accessibility change, investigate this menu rather than restoring an individual character.
System > Keybind
Keybinds are managed from the System menu’s Keybind screen. Select a command to highlight it, then press the key or button that should trigger it. When diagnosing a hotbar problem, check both the hotbar-cycle commands and any shortcut that may have been assigned to an action, menu, or controller function.
Make a short list of what changed before editing. For example, note whether the bar number, slot contents, HUD position, key presses, audio, or graphics changed. That record helps you avoid restoring a broad backup for a narrow problem and makes it easier to verify the result afterward.
Restore a server-backed character settings backup
Use the server backup when your character’s HUD, hotbars, cross hotbars, keybinds, or other character data were previously saved and you need to bring that saved copy back. The restore process starts outside the world at the character-selection screen.
Restore steps
- Return to the Character Selection screen.
- Open the subcommand menu for the affected character.
- Select Back Up Character Settings.
- In the backup window, choose Download to import the saved server copy.
- Enter the game and verify the HUD layout, hotbar pages, cross hotbars, keybinds, and macros that you expected to recover.
The wording can be confusing: the same character-settings window provides the backup operation and the download operation. Choose Download when your goal is to retrieve the saved copy, not to upload the current damaged layout. If the current layout is newer than the saved copy, preserve it first or accept that the restore may replace those newer changes.

Data not included
The official character-backup documentation specifically excludes character appearance, screenshots, item-sort settings, and inventory-location data. Shared macros are handled with Client Settings rather than the character backup. Do not interpret a successful character restore as proof that those excluded items should also return.
Protect the current state first
A restore can replace current settings with an older copy. Before downloading, preserve any newer layout or keybind changes you might want to keep. When creating a backup, the official manual provides a Do not overwrite older data option; use that option when you need to keep an existing backup instead of replacing it. If no usable saved character backup exists, the download window cannot reconstruct a layout that was never saved.

Import settings from another character
If one character still has the layout you want, Final Fantasy XIV provides a separate import path. This is useful when the problem affects one character but another character on the same service has the correct HUD and hotbar arrangement.
- At Character Selection, open the affected character’s subcommand menu.
- Select Import Character Settings.
- Choose the character that contains the desired settings.
- Select the settings categories to import and confirm.
- Log in and verify the imported hotbars, HUD, keybinds, and other selected categories.
Character appearance data is not copied through this import path. Treat it as a settings transfer, not a character-cloning feature. Select only the categories you need when the import screen allows that choice; importing a broad set can replace intentional differences between characters.
Restore a local launcher backup on Windows or Mac
The launcher has a separate local Backup Tool for Windows and Mac. It is appropriate when you previously created a local copy and need to restore client configuration or other settings stored in that backup.

Create a backup
- Open the Final Fantasy XIV launcher.
- Select Config.
- Open the Backup Tool.
- Choose Back Up.
- Keep the resulting backup folder in a safe location. It contains a file named
FFXIVconfig.fea.
Use the manual’s Do not overwrite older data option when making a backup if you need to preserve an earlier copy. Keep dated copies if you are troubleshooting an intermittent reset; otherwise, a new backup can replace the only known-good local copy. Store the folder somewhere outside the game installation so an unrelated client change does not remove it.
Restore the local copy
- Open the launcher and select Config.
- Open the Backup Tool.
- Choose Restore.
- Select the folder that contains
FFXIVconfig.fea. - Launch the game and check the affected display, input, accessibility, HUD, and hotbar settings.
The launcher tool is documented for transferring settings between Windows and Mac. It is not documented as a direct transfer route to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch 2. For supported cross-platform transfers, use the server backup function instead. A local launcher file is useful only where you can access that file and use a supported desktop client.

Use the server route when the needed data is character-specific and a server copy exists. Use the client or launcher route when the missing setting is system-wide or when the saved copy exists only on Windows or Mac. Neither route is a substitute for the other, and neither can restore data that was never saved.
What to do when no backup restores the layout
If the expected page number is selected, the keybinds are correct, and no usable backup exists, rebuild only the settings that are actually missing. Start with one hotbar page and verify it in combat or a training area before changing every job. This limits the chance of copying a mistaken layout across multiple pages.

Separate visibility problems from missing actions
- If the hotbar is absent or moved, inspect HUD Layout and visibility settings.
- If the bar is visible but shows another page, correct the page number and cycle commands.
- If only one or two slots are wrong, replace those actions rather than resetting the entire bar.
- If shortcuts activate the wrong command, inspect System > Keybind for duplicate or unintended assignments.
- If graphics, sound, mouse, gamepad, theme, or accessibility changed across characters, work in System Configuration and the client backup area.
Do not delete configuration folders or reinstall the game as a first response to an unexplained reset. The official material does not establish either action as a general safe fix, and deleting local data can remove the only copy of settings that was never backed up.

Rebuild in a controlled order
- Confirm the intended hotbar number.
- Restore the HUD position and visibility if the bar itself is missing.
- Replace only clearly missing actions.
- Set and test keybinds one group at a time.
- Create a new character and client backup after the layout is confirmed.
This order keeps a visibility error from being mistaken for an action loss and gives you a known-good copy before further experimentation.

Server-backed character settings are the practical route when the destination client differs from the source and the relevant data is supported by the server backup system. The Windows/Mac launcher backup is a local file-based workflow, so it depends on access to the folder containing FFXIVconfig.fea and on using a supported desktop client.
Do not assume that every setting follows a character. Character appearance, screenshots, sorting choices, inventory-location data, client-wide options, and shared macros have separate boundaries. Identify the category first, then choose the matching backup.
A backup made on one computer can also be newer than the copy on another computer. Check the date and contents you intend to restore, and protect the current state before replacing it. If you move between Windows and Mac, the launcher tool is the documented local transfer method; if you move to a console, use the supported server backup path rather than attempting to copy the desktop file.
Is this a known current FFXIV bug?
The official sources do not establish one universal current cause for every player’s unexpected reset. A changed hotbar page, a local-client difference, an input or keybind change, an unavailable backup, and an actual settings failure can produce similar symptoms. The recovery steps above are therefore diagnostic branches, not a claim that one bug explains all cases.
One official Lodestone notice from 2017, following Patch 4.11, described failed client-side saves and a corrupted-settings case that returned settings to defaults. Square Enix stated that the cause had been confirmed and addressed in the October 31, 2017 hotfix. That dated incident is historical context, not evidence of a current widespread problem.
If a reset repeats after you have checked the page number, keybinds, client environment, and backups, record exactly what changes and when. Note the platform, whether one or several characters are affected, and whether the bar number changes. Those details distinguish a page-selection symptom from a broader configuration failure when you seek further support.
Prevent the next reset from becoming a disaster
- After building a major HUD or hotbar layout, create a server-backed character settings backup.
- On Windows or Mac, create a launcher backup and retain the folder containing
FFXIVconfig.fea. - Keep more than one dated backup when experimenting with keybinds or controller layouts.
- Before restoring an older copy, preserve the current state so a newer change is not lost.
- Record which hotbar page each job uses and avoid assigning cycle commands to easily triggered inputs.
- When changing platform or computer, identify whether the missing item is character data or client data before choosing a transfer method.
- After a major restore, test both keyboard and controller input if you use both.
These habits do not prevent every local configuration problem, but they turn an unexpected reset into a reversible restore instead of a full manual rebuild.
