When a Figma AI run fails, hangs, or changes the wrong things, first identify whether you are using the Figma Design agent or Figma Make. Then preserve the current file, copy the exact error, retry once, and reduce the task’s scope before trying again. Design-agent tasks can be stopped and undone from the agent chat; Make projects often need a reload, a duplicate, a clean chat context, or smaller inputs.
The recovery path depends on the failure: network and rate-limit messages need a connection or cooldown check, blocked prompts need different wording, missing-font errors need font resolution, and connector failures need tool permissions, authentication, explicit invocation, and HTTPS hosting.

First determine which Figma product is failing
Figma uses similar AI language for two different environments:
- Figma Design agent: works inside Figma Design files, where it can generate or edit layers, components, and layouts.
- Figma Make: turns prompts into functional prototypes and web apps. It can also work with a local-codebase project and connected tools.
The buttons, limits, and recovery options are not identical. Before changing anything, note the product, file name, time of the failure, selected layers or attachments, and the full error text. A screenshot is useful, but copyable text is better for support and for comparing retries.

Use this triage order before attempting a risky retry
- Classify the run. Record whether it is a Design-agent task or a Make message, and whether the failure happened during generation, editing, setup, preview, or a connector call.
- Save the evidence. Preserve the exact message and timestamp. Do not repeatedly retry while the error is still changing; you may lose the original wording.
- Retry once. A transient request or browser error can clear on a second attempt. If it fails again, reload the browser tab or restart the Figma desktop app.
- Check availability gates. Look for offline or network warnings, a displayed rate-limit reset time, an administrator-disabled AI setting, a blocked-prompt notice, or a missing-font error.
- Make the next request smaller. Select fewer layers, attach smaller frames, shorten the instruction, reduce the number of inputs, and split a large task into screen-by-screen requests.
- Protect the file before a third attempt. Duplicate the file when the previous run made substantial edits or when Make reports an unknown error. In Design, use the agent’s Undo control for the latest change.
| Symptom | Most likely class | First action | Safe recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| “Something went wrong” or request cannot complete | Transient or model failure | Retry, then reload or restart | Duplicate a Make file before another substantial retry |
| Task keeps running in Design | Long or stalled agent task | Click Stop in the agent chat | Reduce selection and prompt scope |
| Make prompt times out | Generative failure, setup race, or oversized input | Wait for preview and background setup to settle | Use a duplicate and a smaller, screen-specific request |
| “Try again, with a smaller selection” | Too many selected layers | Select a smaller group | Work component by component |
| Content-length or attachment error | Prompt, image, or file too large | Shorten text and remove or resize inputs | Split the frame or project |
| Rate-limit message | Temporary usage cap | Wait for the shown cooldown or reset time | Retry after the reset, not continuously |
| Connector connects but does nothing | Tool permission, authentication, invocation, or hosting | Check connector settings | Enable a tool and invoke the connector explicitly |
Recover from a failed or unknown-error run
Figma’s generic “Something went wrong” message does not identify a single cause. Treat it as a transient or model-level failure until a controlled retry shows otherwise.
Figma Design agent
- Copy the complete error and note which layers were selected.
- Retry the same request once.
- If it fails again, reload the browser tab or restart the desktop app. Confirm that the file is not offline and that other network-dependent features respond.
- Resolve any separate gate shown in the message: wait through a rate-limit cooldown, ask an administrator to enable AI if the organization disabled it, revise wording if the prompt was blocked, or install/activate the missing font named by the error.
- Run a narrower request against fewer layers with a shorter instruction. Keep the original file untouched until the smaller run succeeds.
Figma Make
Make documents that some unknown failures come from the generative nature of AI models. The practical sequence is to wait briefly, retry, duplicate the file, and report a persistent bug. A duplicate gives you a safe branch for experiments and preserves the state that produced the error.
- Wait long enough to distinguish a temporary delay from a failed request; do not send many identical prompts.
- Retry once after the preview and project status are visible.
- Duplicate the file before changing the prompt substantially.
- Reduce the request to one screen, one behavior, or one clearly defined change.
- If the same failure reproduces in the duplicate, collect the debug details and report it rather than repeatedly damaging the working file.
Stop a task that is hanging or taking too long
Stopping a Figma Design agent run
When a Design-agent task is still running, click Stop in the chat box. This ends the current task instead of waiting for it to produce more edits. After stopping, inspect the file for partial changes, then either undo the latest change or duplicate the file before a narrower retry.

Avoiding a Figma Make setup race
For a Make project connected to a local codebase, wait 30 to 60 seconds after setup is completed and the preview appears before sending the first change request. Background build tasks may still be running during that interval. Prompting immediately can cause temporary or unwanted files and can make a normal setup delay look like a timeout.
If a Make prompt continues to time out after the preview is stable, stop increasing the prompt size. Use the Make troubleshooting guidance, preserve a reproduction, and prepare the details support needs: project state, exact prompt, timestamp, error text, and the action that preceded the timeout.
Undo unwanted edits without losing a useful comparison
Reverse the latest Design-agent change
Click Undo in the agent chat to reverse the most recent change. Figma’s agent guidance treats this as the normal way to recover from an unwanted edit.

If you need to compare the generated version with the previous state, duplicate the AI-updated version first. Then undo in the original working file. The duplicate preserves the generated result for inspection while the original returns to the prior design.
Protect a Make project before retrying
Make does not use the same Design-agent Undo control for every generated project change. When an unknown error persists or a retry could alter code and assets, duplicate the file before trying again. Work in the duplicate, keeping the last known-good project available for comparison.
Fix output that drifts, ignores instructions, or degrades over many prompts
Long conversations accumulate prior instructions, attachments, guidelines, and connected-tool context. Later requests can then be interpreted against obsolete constraints, producing output that appears to ignore the latest message.

Clear Make’s chat context
Use the option to clear chat context when quality degrades after many prompts. Clearing removes the AI’s prior conversation, attachments, guidelines, and MCP context, while preserving the visible transcript for your reference. It does not erase the visible design or app.
- Record the constraints you still need: target screen, framework or component boundaries, required content, and prohibited changes.
- Clear the chat context.
- Restate the task in a short, explicit prompt.
- Attach only the reference needed for that screen or component.
- Verify the result before adding another requirement.
Use screen-by-screen requests
For fidelity and reliability, provide one screen or one bounded component at a time. State what may change and what must remain untouched. Smaller requests reduce ambiguity and make an unwanted edit easier to undo or isolate.

Selected layers
The message “Try again, with a smaller selection” means the current Design selection is too broad for the request. Deselect the page or large parent frame and select a smaller group, such as one component or one section. Repeat the operation in batches rather than asking the agent to transform an entire complex file at once.
Best Value
Prompt length and content
Content-length errors require a shorter instruction. Remove background explanation, duplicate requirements, and unrelated screens. Keep the acceptance criteria, exact text, dimensions, and exclusions that determine the result.
Attachments
Figma Make supports up to three attachments per message. If you reach that limit, combine only the references that are essential or send separate screen-specific messages. Large images and frames can also trigger attachment errors; crop or split them into smaller sections.
Oversized project files
A Make project containing files over 1 MB can prevent AI chat from working. Shorten or delete oversized files, then retry in a duplicate so the cleanup can be reversed if it removes something needed by the app.

- Offline, connection, or network error: verify that the browser or desktop app is online, reload the tab or restart the app, and retry only after the connection is stable.
- Rate limit: wait for the short cooldown or the reset time displayed in Figma. Sending repeated requests during the cooldown does not make the limit clear sooner.
- AI disabled for the organization: ask a Figma administrator to enable the relevant AI capability. Changing the prompt cannot bypass an organization-level setting.
- Blocked prompt: revise the wording so the request is allowed, specific, and focused on the design or app behavior you need. Do not simply repeat identical blocked text.
- Missing font: resolve the named font in the file or replace it with an available font before asking the agent to continue. Otherwise the run can fail or produce a layout that cannot match the reference.
Repair an MCP connector that connects but does not respond
A visible connector is not necessarily usable. Check the following in order:
- Enable a tool set. At least one connector tool must be set to Ask to run or Always run. A connector with every tool disabled can appear connected but has nothing it is permitted to execute.
- Complete authentication. Add the required API key, personal access token, or OAuth scopes in Advanced settings. Re-authenticate if a token was revoked or its scopes changed.
- Invoke it explicitly. If the agent does not select the connector automatically, write
@[Connector name]in the prompt, replacing the text with the connector’s actual name. - Use supported hosting. Figma’s agent and Figma Make do not support local
localhostorstdioMCP servers. Deploy the server at a publicly accessible HTTPS URL instead. - Retest with a minimal call. Ask for one small, observable action before combining the connector with a large design or code change. This separates connector failure from an unrelated prompt or file-size problem.
A controlled recovery workflow for each product
Design-agent workflow
- Duplicate the file if the requested operation could affect many layers.
- Select only the layers needed for the current change.
- Write a short prompt with the desired result and explicit “do not change” boundaries.
- Run it once and watch for a policy, font, network, or rate-limit message.
- Click Stop if the task runs away or clearly exceeds its scope.
- Use Undo for the latest unwanted edit, or compare against the duplicate if you preserved one.
- Continue in smaller batches after verifying the first result.
Make workflow
- Confirm setup is complete and the preview is visible.
- For a local-codebase project, wait 30–60 seconds before the first change request.
- Keep each prompt to one screen, behavior, or bounded code change.
- Use no more than three attachments in a message and keep each attachment focused.
- Duplicate the file before a risky retry or after an unknown error.
- Clear chat context if the output has drifted after many prompts, then restate the constraints.
- If the timeout or unknown error reproduces in the duplicate, stop retrying and prepare a support report.
What to include when reporting a persistent problem
Support can reproduce a failure only when the report preserves the conditions that caused it. Include:
- The product: Figma Design agent or Figma Make.
- Exact error text, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Date and time with your time zone.
- File or project type, whether a local codebase was involved, and whether a preview had appeared.
- Selected layer count or names, prompt text, attachment count, attachment sizes, and project files near or above 1 MB.
- Connector name, enabled tool mode, authentication method, invocation syntax, and whether the server used HTTPS.
- What you tried: retry, reload, restart, stop, undo, duplicate, context clear, scope reduction, or wait.
- A screenshot or short video showing the failure and the action immediately before it.
For a persistent Make bug, report the reproduction after testing the duplicate. For a Design issue, preserve the original file and identify whether the failure occurs with a smaller selection and shorter prompt.
Quick Recap
Prevention checklist for reliable agent runs
- Start with a duplicate when a task can alter many layers or files.
- Use explicit scope: name the screen or component and list what must not change.
- Prefer one screen or component per request.
- Keep prompts concise and attachments small; Make allows up to three attachments per message.
- Keep Make project files below the 1 MB threshold that can block AI chat.
- Wait 30–60 seconds after local-codebase setup and preview before the first Make prompt.
- Check fonts, network state, organization AI availability, and rate-limit status before escalating.
- Enable at least one MCP tool as Ask to run or Always run, configure credentials in Advanced settings, and host the server over public HTTPS.
- Clear Make context when accumulated instructions begin to conflict.
- Save the exact error and timestamp before repeated retries erase useful diagnostic context.
