How to Fix FFmpeg YouTube Live Stream Buffering While Looping Video

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no one FFmpeg switch that fixes every buffering problem. First identify whether the trouble is in FFmpeg’s loop or encoding, the connection carrying the stream to YouTube, or playback on viewers’ devices. Compare FFmpeg logs and a local recording with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health; then work through the branch that matches the evidence.

Where is the buffering happening?

“Buffering” can describe different symptoms. A slow or struggling FFmpeg process, a stream-health warning during ingest, and viewers seeing playback pauses are not interchangeable failures. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance treats encoder condition and outbound connection strength as separate things to check (YouTube: Fix streaming issues).

  • FFmpeg-side trouble: Check its output for encoder or input errors, slow processing, missed pacing, or disconnects. Note whether CPU load is unusually high rather than assuming it is the cause.
  • Ingest trouble: Open YouTube Live Control Room and read the stream-health messages. Warnings about bitrate, keyframes, resolution, or connection point to different checks.
  • Viewer playback trouble: If ingest and a local recording look healthy but viewers still report pauses, investigate the outbound path and playback conditions, including the stream’s latency mode.

The title alone does not establish your command, FFmpeg build, host capacity, output format, or measured upload speed. Treat the steps below as a diagnostic workflow, not a guaranteed fix.

Check that the file loops and plays at the intended speed

FFmpeg has more than one way to repeat video. The command-line input option -stream_loop -1 requests infinite looping of an input stream; place it before the corresponding -i. The video loop filter loops frames instead. They operate at different layers, so switching between them is not a universal cure for an encoder or network problem. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation and FFmpeg loop-filter documentation.

  1. Find the input corresponding to the video being repeated. Confirm that -stream_loop -1, if used, appears before that input’s -i, not after it.
  2. Check whether the command paces the file as a real-time live source. A file that is processed as fast as possible is not necessarily being delivered at its intended playback rate.
  3. Review FFmpeg’s timestamps, processing speed, and errors across a loop boundary. If the local output stutters at the same point on each repeat, investigate the file, decoding, filtering, or encoding path before blaming YouTube.

Do not assume the loop filter is less demanding or that -stream_loop -1 itself causes buffering. The right diagnosis depends on the complete command and input.

Match output bitrate and keyframes to YouTube’s current guidance

For RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval with no more than four seconds between keyframes. Confirm the current table and the support of your installed FFmpeg build and chosen output protocol before changing codecs: YouTube recommended encoder settings.

H.264 example in YouTube’s guidance Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s listed ingest settings, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. Match the value to the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not copy an old command’s bitrate without checking the current table.

Set a two-second GOP using the output frame rate

YouTube’s error guidance says keyframes that are not sent often enough can cause buffering. It recommends a two-second frequency, a maximum interval of four seconds, and a closed GOP for optimal transcoding (YouTube live streaming error messages). In FFmpeg, GOP size is commonly specified in frames: at 30 output frames per second, two seconds is 60 frames. Calculate from the actual output frame rate, not just the source file’s rate. If the command changes frame rate or uses variable-frame-rate material, inspect the resulting output rather than assuming the conversion.

A keyframe interval that is too long can trigger an ingest warning even if the bitrate is right. Conversely, changing keyframe frequency will not repair an unstable connection or a local encoding slowdown.

Separate encoding problems from transport problems

Compare the FFmpeg process, local output, and YouTube’s stream-health report while the stream is running. YouTube recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load, inspecting a local archive, and testing outbound upload strength (YouTube streaming troubleshooting).

  • If a local recording also stutters: The fault is already present before YouTube playback. Check the source file and decoding path, FFmpeg errors, filters, output settings, and whether the host can sustain the encode. Reduce workload or adjust settings only after identifying what is failing.
  • If local output is smooth but YouTube reports ingest trouble: Compare the configured bitrate and format with YouTube’s guidance, then test whether the outbound connection can sustain the stream consistently. A momentary speed-test result alone does not prove sustained stability.
  • If YouTube flags connection health: Gather the stream-health message and upload-test results. YouTube recommends contacting the ISP when testing identifies an outbound connection problem; do not infer packet loss, a bad cable, or ISP fault without evidence.
  • If the connection is healthy but the encoder reports errors: Focus on the FFmpeg build, selected codec/protocol, command, and host load. A codec switch is not appropriate until you confirm that the build and output path support it.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. For a test, include representative audio and movement rather than validating only a static image, and continue monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube encoder and stream setup guidance).

If ingest is healthy but viewers still buffer

When YouTube reports healthy ingest and the local output is smooth, the problem may be downstream of FFmpeg, such as outbound variability or viewer playback conditions. Check the selected latency mode as one possibility, not as a presumed diagnosis. YouTube warns that lower latency may mean more playback buffering (Manage live stream settings). Lower delay and more resilient playback can involve a trade-off; compare the result after changing one setting at a time.

Common symptoms and next checks

What you observe What to check next
FFmpeg slows down or reports encoding errors Inspect the full log, host load, source decode, filters, output frame rate, and codec support. Check whether the local recording is also affected.
YouTube reports infrequent keyframes Verify the output GOP duration against the two-second recommendation and four-second maximum; account for the actual output fps and closed GOP.
YouTube reports bitrate or resolution trouble Confirm the stream’s actual output settings and compare bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendation for that codec, resolution, and frame rate.
Local output is smooth, but ingest health is poor Test sustained outbound upload and compare the result with the configured bitrate and YouTube health messages.
Ingest and local output are healthy, but viewers report pauses Check latency mode and consider viewer-side playback or network conditions; lower latency can mean more playback buffering.

Information needed to diagnose a specific stream

If the checks do not isolate the fault, collect the evidence rather than trying unrelated flags. Keep stream keys and other credentials private if sharing a command or log.

  • The complete FFmpeg command with the YouTube stream key redacted, plus the FFmpeg version and build configuration.
  • Relevant FFmpeg log lines from before and during a loop, including processing speed and any errors.
  • YouTube Live Control Room’s exact stream-health message and whether the issue appears in the local recording.
  • Output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, GOP/keyframe interval, and whether the frame rate changes from the source.
  • Host CPU/load observations and upload-test results taken during representative streaming conditions.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube loop rather than maintaining an FFmpeg host, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. The uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed. Start at StreamNeo’s free trial.
