First identify which connection is failing: FFmpeg’s -reconnect options apply to HTTP inputs, not generally to an RTMP/RTMPS output sent to YouTube. For a temporary RTMP output failure, FFmpeg documents a separate FIFO-muxer recovery approach. Then verify YouTube’s stream URL and key, encoder settings, and upload capacity. These measures address different failure points; none guarantees an uninterrupted return to the same YouTube stream.
1. Find the failing connection before changing flags
Read the command and the first meaningful FFmpeg error line. Identify the inputs after each -i and the destination used for output. A radio stream may be reading audio from an HTTP source while sending the finished audio or video feed to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS; a reconnect option aimed at one side does not repair the other.

- HTTP input disconnect or premature end: the HTTP protocol’s reconnect options may apply to that input.
- RTMP/RTMPS output write failure: HTTP input reconnect flags do not provide generic outgoing RTMP recovery. Check YouTube ingest and consider FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer recovery mechanism.
- FFmpeg process exits: restarting the process is a separate operational measure. It will not correct invalid input, credentials, incompatible media settings, or an unavailable ingest endpoint.
Keep a copy of the exact command, FFmpeg version/build, timestamps, and error lines for diagnosis. Redact the stream key before sharing commands, logs, or screenshots.
2. If the HTTP input is disconnecting
FFmpeg documents reconnect controls in its HTTP protocol options. Use them only for the HTTP input that is failing, and check that your installed FFmpeg build supports the options you select. Place protocol options so they apply to the intended input.

-reconnect 1retries when the connection is disconnected before EOF.-reconnect_at_eof 1treats EOF as an error and can be useful for live or endless streams that unexpectedly end.-reconnect_streamed 1enables reconnect behavior for streamed or non-seekable inputs.-reconnect_delay_max,-reconnect_max_retries, and-reconnect_delay_total_maxlet you bound retry delay, attempts, or total retry time.
Choose retry limits deliberately: endless retries can leave a dead source running without useful audio, while a short limit can give up during a temporary source outage. Confirm the HTTP source itself is reachable and producing the expected stream; reconnecting cannot restore a source that is permanently unavailable.
3. If YouTube’s RTMP output is failing
For temporary output failures, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation gives an RTMP example using -f fifo -fifo_format flv -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1. The FIFO muxer is intended to keep processing in real time and attempt output recovery after a temporary failure.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
Adapt the documented example to the actual output portion of your command and validate it with your FFmpeg build and YouTube ingest configuration. It is a starting point, not a universal command or a promise that every interrupted stream will resume seamlessly. Buffering and interruption behavior depend on the setup; the documentation does not quantify continuity for an individual radio stream.
4. Verify YouTube’s ingest details
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the stream URL and the current stream key, then copy them into the encoder configuration exactly. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that identifies where the encoder sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
- If the key may be stale or compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and immediately update FFmpeg or the encoder with the replacement. A reset key will not work until the sending configuration is updated.
- Prefer RTMPS where supported. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and supported video and audio codecs.
Never put the stream key in public command examples or diagnostic output. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send to your stream.

5. Check media settings and upload headroom
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 fps; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use YouTube’s current resolution-specific bitrate table rather than relying on an old fixed bitrate. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
The selected total bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom and counting both primary and backup stream bitrates when applicable. Its network tips warn that connectivity disruption can break a stream. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen resolution and bitrate, lower the setting and retest. Also check YouTube’s stream error messages for problems such as unsupported codecs or incorrect bitrates.

6. If FFmpeg has exited, handle the process separately
A process supervisor can relaunch FFmpeg after it exits, which may help on an always-on VPS or server. That is process management, not a repair for a bad command, failed source, rejected stream key, incompatible encoding, or unavailable YouTube endpoint. Confirm how your supervisor handles repeated failures and whether a restarted process reconnects as expected in your environment. A secondary VPS guide discusses this kind of deployment; treat it as general setup advice rather than a guarantee.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems7. Retest and monitor the live stream
- Make one change at a time so you can identify which layer it affects.
- Test before the intended broadcast. YouTube advises monitoring stream health and messages during the event; see its streaming tips.
- When an error returns, note whether the HTTP input, RTMP output, or FFmpeg process failed first. Save the timestamp and exact error line, with secrets removed.
- Check the input source, YouTube stream health, and actual upload headroom while the stream is running. Do not infer recovery solely from FFmpeg continuing to print output.
8. Keep the radio stream running without a home computer
If the real requirement is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo is the cloud option to consider first: it loops the upload from the cloud, accepts any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. It streams to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
