The correct fix depends on which PC version you are running. The 2026 native Steam release, FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE, needs game-patch, settings, and support checks. The original PlayStation 2 game running through PCSX2 needs emulator, graphics-driver, runtime, and disc-image checks. Start by identifying your edition; applying PCSX2 advice to the remake, or remake advice to an emulator, can waste time and create new problems.

First identify your version

If the title in your Steam library is the 2026 remake, do not change PCSX2 settings: PCSX2 is not involved. If you launched the PS2 release through PCSX2, the remake’s graphics configuration and Steam troubleshooting do not apply. The edition, not merely the symptom, determines the correct first step.

#1 Best Overall
FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE - PlayStation 5
  • Experience the definitive version of the chilling classic, completely overhauled to deliver a deeper and more intense survival horror experience in the Minakami Village.
  • The revamped sound offers spatial audio that will immerse players deep into the action, allowing them to enjoy a more authentic experience. Not only will they hear and feel the presence of spirits more intensely, but wraiths will appear when least expected, such as trying to grab the protagonist’s hands when reaching for an item or waiting in the shadows. Players will have to react quickly to escape these attacks. Failure to do so will inflict Willpower Damage, leading directly to intense combat.
  • The gameplay mechanics of the Camera Obscura, a signature feature of the FATAL FRAME franchise, have also been reworked to offer a more intense and rich experience during combat and exploration. Players will still be able to attack wraiths by taking photos, but managing to align the focus point with their target will inflict more damage. If the damage dealt exceeds a certain threshold, players will be able to activate Shutter Chance state, where they will then be able to deal significant damage with one single picture within a brief period – making it crucial for fans to be precise and to perfectly time their shot.
  • To confront the spirits lurking in the shadows of Minakami Village, players will be able to rely on new Camera Obscura features such as focus, zoom and filters. By lighting up the focus points on the screen, players will focus on their target and deal more damage to the spirits if they manage to light more focus points. By using the zoom feature, players will be able to attack a spirit from a distance while taking cover and being undetected and will also be able to attack multiple targets at once by zooming out. The zoom of the Camera Obscura will also help players during exploration as they will be able to photograph specific objects.
  • The filters will help players to unravel the mysteries around them by changing filters depending on the situation or wraith they encounter. Among the different filters they can use, the Paraceptual Filter will allow them to increase their shooting distance in combat and, when exploring, to reproduce past actions using the residual memories.

Fixes for the 2026 Steam remake

1. Check the installed patch before changing files

Koei Tecmo’s update history lists Steam version 1.04.00 with stability improvements and minor bug fixes. Earlier update notes also mention an HDR cutscene display fix and named progression and settings fixes. These notes change as patches are released, so check the live update history and compare it with the build installed on your PC before attempting a workaround.

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Right-click FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE and choose Properties.
  3. Use the installed-files or update information shown by Steam to confirm that the game has finished updating.
  4. Restart Steam and the game after an update. Test the original symptom before editing configuration files.

Do not treat version 1.04.00 as a permanent “latest” label. It is the version identified in the cited update history; a newer build may exist by the time you read this. If Steam shows a pending download, a queued update, or a paused installation, finish that process before drawing conclusions about stability.

Patch notes are also useful for deciding whether a problem is already recognized. A note about HDR cutscenes, for instance, is more relevant to a display fault during a cinematic than to a keyboard binding. A progression or settings fix may explain why a particular save or menu behaves differently after updating, but it does not guarantee that every crash is solved.

2. Correct keyboard and mouse controls

The official manuals state: “Controls can be changed via Control Settings under Basic Settings in the Options menu.” In the remake, open Options > Basic Settings > Control Settings, select the action that behaves incorrectly, and assign a different key or mouse input. Use the in-game button guide to check which action you are editing.

The documented default keyboard and mouse arrangement includes:

  • WASD: character movement.
  • IJKL: camera movement.
  • Right mouse button: raise or lower the Camera Obscura.
  • Left mouse button: shoot.

After rebinding, test movement, camera control, Camera Obscura raise/lower, and shooting in a safe area before continuing a difficult encounter. If a key appears to do nothing, check whether another action already uses that key and remove the conflicting assignment. Test one change at a time so you know which assignment corrected the behavior.

Keep a note of your preferred layout before experimenting. If a new assignment feels worse, return to the same menu and restore the prior key rather than editing an external file. The documented menu is the supported way to change controls, and it avoids guessing at configuration-file names or formats.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE [PS5]
  • The complete remake of FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO II: Crimson Butterfly
  • This Japanese-style horror adventure game follows twin sisters who have lost their way in a ghost-haunted village
  • With the Camera Obscura you fight the ghosts
  • This title has been completely remastered and all the elements, from graphics to audio and key gameplay systems and controls have been improved
  • In addition, the mechanism "Take Mayu by the hand" offers an intimate aspect through which you can experience the deep connection between the sister stronger than ever before

A gamepad is an optional comfort choice, not a cure for crashes, black screens, or stutter. The official gamepad manual documents both Modern and Classic layouts. A reviewer also found the PC keyboard bindings awkward and preferred a controller, but that is an ergonomics observation rather than a technical diagnosis. You do not need a particular controller model, and buying one is not a requirement for the game to run.

3. Loading-screen hangs and black screens in the remake

First verify that the symptom belongs to the native remake rather than PCSX2. The Steam Support page links a community guide titled “Fix to: stuck on loading screen when starting new game,” but the guide’s method was not verifiable in the available material. Do not present an unverified community instruction as an official fix.

Use this safe sequence instead:

  1. Confirm the game’s Steam build and install any available official update.
  2. Close overlays, recording tools, and other injectors temporarily, then reproduce the problem once. This is a diagnostic isolation step, not a guaranteed fix.
  3. Record exactly when the failure occurs: launch, new game, a particular room, a cutscene, or a save-file load.
  4. If the issue remains on a current build, report it through Koei Tecmo’s official support route linked from Steam Support. Include your game version, Windows version, hardware, and a repeatable sequence.

There is no established universal remedy for remake black screens in the cited material. Avoid deleting saves or repeatedly editing unknown files unless support specifically instructs you to do so. A failure limited to one save or one scene should be described that way; “the game is broken” is much less useful than “new game hangs after selecting this mode” or “the display goes black during this cutscene.”

Do not infer a fix from a single community post. A guide title can mirror the words players use, but it does not establish that the same steps work on every patch, graphics card, or Windows installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Reduce traversal stutter only as an optional experiment

A Steam Community guide titled “Fix Stuttering / Traversal Stutters” proposes editing graphics_option.json. It says to change shader_precompiled_num from 0 to 1, then increase the value by one if traversal stutter remains. This is a user-generated workaround with no controlled evidence, no demonstrated success rate, and no Koei Tecmo approval. Its applicability to later game versions is uncertain.

If you choose to test it:

  1. Close the game completely.
  2. Make a backup copy of graphics_option.json before editing.
  3. Change only shader_precompiled_num; leave all other values untouched.
  4. Launch the game and test the same route where the stutter occurred.
  5. If the result is worse, restore the backup rather than repeatedly raising the number.

Check the official patch history first. A stability update is safer and more broadly applicable than an anecdotal configuration change. If the file is regenerated by an update, your edit may disappear; if the game stops starting, restoring the backup is preferable to guessing at additional values.

5. Interpreting reports about remake performance

An independent review described a smooth experience on the reviewer’s own high-end test system. That result cannot establish performance on your hardware, and no reliable statistic in the cited material measures how common the remake’s crashes, stutters, or black screens are. Forum-post volume and guide views are not prevalence data.

Use another player’s report as a lead, not as a specification. Note differences in GPU, CPU, laptop power mode, display, resolution, HDR, and installed patch before assuming your systems are equivalent. A controller recommendation from a review addresses awkward keyboard bindings; it does not demonstrate better frame pacing or solve a renderer failure.

Fixes for the original PS2 game in PCSX2

1. Update PCSX2, then verify the game image

PCSX2 says that a black screen or failure to load usually indicates a corrupted or incomplete dump. The emulator’s recommended order is to update PCSX2 and verify the image.

  1. Install the current PCSX2 build using the project’s normal update process.
  2. Open the PCSX2 game list.
  3. Right-click the game and open Properties.
  4. In the Properties window, locate the disc-track list and select the verification button.
  5. Wait for the check to finish. A failed check means the image should be dumped again from the owner’s disc using PCSX2’s official disc-dumping procedure.

Use a disc you own and create your own image. Do not download an unauthorized game image. Verification checks the file you supplied; it does not repair a bad dump. If verification succeeds, continue with PCSX2’s current compatibility and graphics documentation rather than applying a remake configuration edit.

2. Resolve a missing MSVCP140.dll message

If PCSX2 reports that MSVCP140.dll is missing, PCSX2’s Windows guide directs users to install the x64 Visual C++ Redistributable. Install the x64 package, restart Windows or PCSX2 as directed by the guide, and launch the emulator again. This is a PCSX2 runtime requirement; it is not evidence of a missing remake component.

Read the error literally and complete the restart step before trying other changes. Installing unrelated DLL files from download sites is not a substitute for the Microsoft runtime recommended by PCSX2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Stop crashes caused by graphics drivers

For PCSX2 launch or settings crashes that match the emulator’s documented driver symptom, update every relevant GPU driver. Laptop owners should update both the integrated GPU and the discrete GPU, because PCSX2 may run through either device depending on Windows’ graphics selection.

  • Install the current driver for the integrated graphics processor.
  • Install the current driver for the discrete graphics processor, if present.
  • Restart Windows.
  • Open PCSX2 and retest the operation that previously crashed.

Do not describe this as a proven remedy for a native-remake crash. The diagnosis and remedy are specific to PCSX2. If only the emulator’s settings window or game-list operation fails, record that distinction when seeking help.

4. Check Windows shell and interface modifications

PCSX2 documents crashes while opening settings or adding a file or directory when Windows shell or user-interface modifications are present. If you use a shell replacement, Explorer modification, window customizer, or similar UI tool, temporarily disable or uninstall it, restart Windows, and test PCSX2 again. Re-enable one modification at a time only after the emulator is stable so you can identify a conflict.

5. Remove the incompatible Vulkan compatibility package

PCSX2 says the Windows OpenCL/OpenGL/Vulkan Compatibility Pack is noncompliant and can cause Vulkan-related crashes. If that package is installed and PCSX2 crashes when using Vulkan, remove it using Windows’ installed-app controls, restart the computer, and test PCSX2 again. This advice applies to the emulator’s Vulkan path, not to the remake’s renderer.

How to report an unresolved remake fault

Steam Support identifies Koei Tecmo as the official support provider and points players toward the publisher’s support site, product site, discussions, and community guides. The publisher’s PC support index lists the remake.

A useful report is specific enough for another person to reproduce:

  • Edition and build: identify the 2026 remake and the exact installed Steam version.
  • Windows version: include the edition and current update level.
  • Hardware: CPU, GPU, system memory, display resolution, and whether the computer is a laptop.
  • Graphics settings: resolution, HDR state, display mode, upscaling or frame-generation options, and API options if shown.
  • Exact symptom: black screen, infinite loading, crash to desktop, missing input, or traversal stutter.
  • Reproduction path: list the menu choices, save, room, cutscene, or route that triggers it.
  • Recent changes: note a patch, driver update, controller change, configuration edit, or overlay that preceded the problem.

Community bug threads may contain example hardware reports, but individual posts do not show how widespread a problem is. Do not infer a failure rate from the number of reports. If the problem is intermittent, include how often it occurs and whether restarting, changing scenes, or loading a different save changes the result.

What not to do

  • Do not apply PCSX2 fixes to the native Steam remake.
  • Do not use a remake configuration edit as though it were an official patch.
  • Do not treat an anecdotal stutter guide as proof that a setting works for every version or PC.
  • Do not download an unauthorized PS2 image; redump the game from a disc you own when verification fails.
  • Do not delete saves or overwrite configuration files without a backup.
  • Do not claim that a controller repairs crashes, loading failures, or rendering problems; it addresses control comfort only.
  • Do not assume a reviewer’s high-end performance result predicts your frame pacing or stability.
  • Do not keep increasing a configuration value indefinitely; restore the backup if the optional test makes traversal or startup worse.

Decision checklist

  1. Identify whether you are using the 2026 Steam remake or the PS2 original in PCSX2.
  2. For the remake, confirm the live Steam build and read the current Koei Tecmo update notes.
  3. For control problems, use Options > Basic Settings > Control Settings and test a rebind.
  4. For PCSX2 black screens, update the emulator and verify the disc image in game Properties.
  5. For PCSX2 startup or settings crashes, update both laptop GPUs where applicable, check Windows shell modifications, and address the documented runtime or Vulkan compatibility-package causes.
  6. Back up the remake’s configuration before trying the community stutter workaround, and revert it if testing does not help.
  7. Send persistent remake failures to Koei Tecmo with the exact build, hardware, symptom, and reproduction steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know whether I need remake or PCSX2 troubleshooting?

The Steam product named FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is the native Windows release from March 11, 2026. The original PS2 game appears inside PCSX2 and uses a disc image. Native-remake settings do not apply to PCSX2, and emulator fixes do not apply to the remake.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Steam version 1.04.00 still the latest remake patch?

Koei Tecmo’s update history lists 1.04.00 with stability improvements and minor bug fixes, along with earlier HDR, progression, and settings fixes. Check the live update page and your installed Steam build because a newer version may have replaced it.

  • IMMERSIVE 3D AUDIO — Feel the presence of spirits more vividly with enhanced 3D sound design that heightens tension while exploring the haunted village.

What should I do if the remake is stuck loading a new game?

Confirm that Steam has installed the current update, isolate the problem by temporarily closing overlays or injectors, and record exactly where loading stops. Steam links a community guide with that title, but its method is not verified here. Persistent faults should go to Koei Tecmo support with your build, Windows version, hardware, and reproduction steps.

Can a controller fix Fatal Frame II crashes or black screens?

No. A gamepad can make the remake more comfortable because the official manual supports Modern and Classic layouts and a reviewer found keyboard bindings awkward. It is not a remedy for crashes, loading failures, rendering problems, or traversal stutter.

What does a PCSX2 black screen usually mean?

PCSX2 says a black screen or failure to load usually indicates a corrupted or incomplete game dump. Update PCSX2, open the game’s Properties, verify the image from the disc-track list, and redump the game from a disc you own if verification fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I fix the PCSX2 MSVCP140.dll error?

Install the x64 Visual C++ Redistributable specified in PCSX2’s Windows troubleshooting guidance, then restart PCSX2 or Windows as directed. Do not download a standalone DLL from an untrusted site.

Why does PCSX2 crash when I open settings or add a game?

Update the relevant graphics drivers, including both integrated and discrete GPUs on a laptop, and check for Windows shell or user-interface modifications. PCSX2 documents those conditions as possible causes for the affected operations.

Should I remove the Windows Vulkan Compatibility Pack?

Only for the PCSX2 case documented by PCSX2: the OpenCL/OpenGL/Vulkan Compatibility Pack is described as noncompliant and may cause Vulkan-related emulator crashes. Remove it through installed-app controls, restart, and retest. This is not a remake fix.

Is changing shader_precompiled_num an official stutter fix?

No. A Steam Community guide suggests changing shader_precompiled_num in graphics_option.json from 0 to 1 and increasing it by one if needed. It is an anecdotal workaround with no controlled evidence, so back up the file, try it only after official updates, and restore the backup if results worsen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information should I include when contacting support?

Provide the exact edition and build, Windows version, CPU, GPU, memory, laptop status, resolution, HDR and display settings, the precise symptom, where it occurs, and repeatable steps. Mention recent patches, driver updates, controller changes, overlays, or configuration edits.

The Bottom Line

Separate the 2026 Steam remake from the PS2 version in PCSX2 before troubleshooting. Keep the remake updated and use its in-game control settings; treat community configuration edits as optional experiments only. For PCSX2, update the emulator, verify your own disc image, and follow its documented Windows, driver, runtime, and Vulkan guidance. Persistent remake faults belong with Koei Tecmo support, reported with exact version, hardware, and reproduction details.
