Fast battery loss on a Lenovo Legion Go S is usually caused by an overly high thermal mode, a bright high-refresh display, background Windows activity, or a charger that does not deliver the required USB-C Power Delivery wattage. On battery, switch to 15 W Balance or 10 W Quiet mode, select Best power efficiency in Windows, reduce display demand, close background work, and use a compliant 65 W USB-C PD 3.0 adapter when charging.
Start with the power setting that has the biggest effect
The Legion Go S can spend its small integrated battery very quickly when the processor and graphics system are allowed to run at their highest power target. Lenovo’s user guide identifies three thermal presets with different purposes:

Change the thermal mode
- Open Legion Space and select the thermal or operating-mode control.
- Choose Balance for a practical battery-performance compromise, or Quiet when runtime matters more than frame rate.
- You can also cycle the modes with Legion L + Y.
- Launch the game again after changing the mode so its power behavior is easy to compare.
Performance mode can be useful for demanding games while plugged in, but leaving the 30 W setting enabled on battery creates a substantially heavier load. If a game still drains the battery rapidly in Balance mode, try Quiet mode and reduce the game’s frame-rate limit or graphics quality.

Set Windows to favor efficiency on battery
Windows has a separate power preference that can limit background and processor activity without changing the Legion Space thermal preset.

- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Under the power mode for battery operation, select Best power efficiency.
- In the same page, shorten the Screen and sleep timeouts. A shorter screen-off timeout prevents an unattended handheld from running its display indefinitely.
These settings apply to Windows 11 installations. The Legion Go S is also offered with SteamOS; the Windows paths do not appear on that edition, so use the operating system’s own battery and sleep controls while retaining the hardware and charger guidance below.
Find the app or service using charge in the background
A game is not always the largest drain. Launchers, browser tabs, cloud synchronisation, update tools, and startup utilities can continue using the processor, wireless radios, storage, or display after you close a game.
Inspect recent battery use
- Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage.
- Expand the usage view and look for applications with unusually high consumption during the period when the battery dropped.
- For an application that does not need to run continuously, open its background-permission control and select Power optimized or Never.
Do not disable background operation for software that must deliver notifications or complete a download. Change one application at a time, then check whether the drain changes during an otherwise similar session.
Reduce startup activity
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Turn off programs that you do not need immediately after sign-in, especially game launchers, synchronisation clients, and updater helpers.
- Restart the Go S and observe idle drain before opening a game.
Removing unnecessary startup work is particularly useful when the console loses charge while idle or sleeping rather than only during gameplay.

Reduce what the display has to power
The screen is a constant load, and its demand rises with brightness and refresh rate. Lenovo’s guide identifies 60 Hz as the energy-efficient refresh option; higher refresh rates use more power.
- Lower brightness with the Windows brightness control or the Legion Space overlay until text and game detail remain comfortable to see.
- Where your game does not need high motion smoothness, select the lower refresh-rate option, typically 60 Hz.
- Inside demanding games, cap the frame rate to a value the display and hardware can sustain instead of allowing an uncapped renderer to run continuously.
A lower refresh rate does not make every game faster or slower by itself; it reduces display and rendering demand when the game is already producing more frames than you need to see. Keep a higher setting when it materially improves a competitive or fast-moving game, but expect shorter runtime.
Update Legion Space, drivers, and BIOS safely
Firmware or driver changes can affect power limits, charging behavior, and sleep states. Lenovo’s user guide directs owners to use Legion Space for the console’s updates.

- Connect the Legion Go S to AC power before starting an update.
- Open Legion Space > Settings > Disks and Drivers > Check for Updates.
- Install the offered Legion Space, driver, and BIOS packages in the order presented by the utility.
- Do not unplug the console, close the updater, or power it off while firmware is being written.
- Restart after the installation and recheck the thermal mode and Windows power mode, since an update can restore defaults.
If the drain began immediately after an update, first confirm that the current BIOS and driver packages are installed. A charging problem that persists after those checks may require Lenovo’s battery-driver and firmware troubleshooting path.

Use the correct charger and charging mode
For the Legion Go S 8APU1, Lenovo specifies a 65 W USB-C Power Delivery 3.0 adapter. A lower-rated phone charger, an incompatible USB-C supply, or a cable that cannot carry the negotiated power can make the console charge slowly, stop charging during a demanding game, or appear to lose charge while connected.
Check the adapter and connection
- Confirm that the power supply is rated for 65 W USB-C PD 3.0, not merely that its plug fits the port.
- Connect the adapter directly to the console for testing; temporarily remove docks, hubs, and pass-through accessories.
- Try the other USB-C port if your setup and accessory arrangement allow it, and check that the connector is fully seated.
- Use a cable rated for the required USB-C Power Delivery level. A USB-C cable’s shape alone does not guarantee the necessary current capability.
Check charging behavior in Legion Space
Open the charging or battery controls in Legion Space and verify the selected charging mode. Lenovo support lists charging mode, adapter wattage, and firmware as the first checks when charging behaves abnormally. A high-power game can consume energy faster than an underpowered adapter supplies it, so the percentage may fall even though the cable is connected.
For a meaningful test, connect the specified 65 W adapter, select Balance mode, close background applications, and watch the battery percentage for several minutes while the game is running. If the percentage still declines under those controlled conditions, test another known-good 65 W PD 3.0 adapter and cable before assuming the battery itself is defective.
Remove avoidable loads and heat

- Disconnect USB storage, controllers, lighting devices, capture hardware, and other peripherals that are not needed for the session.
- Close power-consuming applications and browser windows before launching a game.
- Keep air intakes and exhausts clear. A hot console may increase fan activity and reduce efficiency.
- Avoid using or charging the device in extreme heat or cold. Temperature affects both power consumption and charging behavior.
Wireless accessories and network activity can add smaller loads that become noticeable during idle periods. Turn off connections and peripherals that you are not using, while leaving the network enabled when a game or service genuinely requires it.
What battery life is realistic?
The Legion Go S 8APU1 has an integrated 55.5 Wh battery. Lenovo’s 2025 specification quotes an approximate maximum of 14.5 hours of local 1080p video playback at 150 nits. That is a controlled video-playback figure, not a gaming guarantee. Lenovo notes that actual runtime varies with configuration, software, wireless functions, power-management settings, and brightness.
Games place a much higher load on the Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor and graphics system than decoding a local video file. A demanding title at a high frame rate, high brightness, and high refresh rate can therefore run for far less time than the advertised video figure. Compare battery tests only when those variables are similar: thermal mode or TDP, display brightness, refresh rate, frame-rate cap, wireless state, and connected peripherals.
Troubleshoot by when the battery drains
It drains mainly during demanding games
- Switch from 30 W Performance to 15 W Balance; use 10 W Quiet if the game remains playable.
- Cap the frame rate and reduce graphics settings that keep the GPU fully loaded.
- Lower brightness and select 60 Hz when high refresh is not important.
- Check Battery usage for a launcher, browser, recorder, or updater running beside the game.
- Retest with unnecessary USB devices disconnected.
This pattern is normally a power-budget issue rather than a fault: the game is requesting more energy than the battery can provide for a long session.

It loses charge while connected to power
- Verify the adapter is 65 W USB-C PD 3.0 and test a different compliant cable.
- Bypass a dock or hub and connect the adapter directly.
- Inspect the charging mode in Legion Space.
- Install current Legion Space, driver, and BIOS packages while connected to power.
- Repeat the test in Balance mode with background apps closed.
If the percentage falls only in Performance mode during a demanding game, the system may be drawing more than the adapter is delivering. If it falls even when idle with a compliant adapter, continue to the idle-drain branch and then contact Lenovo support if firmware checks do not resolve it.
It drains while idle or asleep
- Review Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage for recent background consumers.
- Set nonessential apps to Power optimized or Never for background permission.
- Disable unnecessary entries under Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Shorten screen-off and sleep timers.
- Disconnect peripherals and, for a controlled overnight test, disable wireless connections that are not required.
Record the starting percentage and the sleep interval. This distinguishes a display that never turned off from genuine standby drain.
The change began after an update
Open Legion Space’s update page and confirm that BIOS, drivers, and Legion Space itself are current. Recheck thermal, refresh-rate, brightness, and Windows efficiency settings after the update. If charging remains abnormal despite a 65 W PD 3.0 adapter, Lenovo’s support guidance includes battery-driver and firmware checks.

Escalate to Lenovo support when the console repeatedly loses charge while idle, refuses to charge with a known-good 65 W USB-C PD 3.0 adapter, reports inconsistent charging modes, or shows a sudden capacity change that survives current firmware and driver installation. Provide the support technician with the Legion Go S model (8APU1), Windows or SteamOS edition, adapter rating, thermal mode, and the conditions under which the percentage falls. That information helps separate a high-load operating choice from a charging or battery fault.
A practical battery-drain test
For a repeatable comparison, use the same game or video and note the starting percentage, brightness, refresh rate, thermal mode, wireless state, connected devices, and adapter. Test one change at a time: first Balance mode, then efficiency mode, then display settings, and finally background-app restrictions. A controlled sequence shows which adjustment matters on your unit instead of attributing every improvement to a single setting.
