Most Fairbuds problems can be isolated to one of four areas: the Bluetooth pairing record, the charging path, the phone’s Bluetooth settings, or the earbuds’ connection to the Fairbuds app. Start with the least destructive fix: charge both earbuds, place them in the open case, and hold the case button for three seconds until the LED blinks blue. Select Fairbuds in your phone’s Bluetooth menu. If the old pairing record is corrupt, forget Fairbuds first, then hold the case button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes red three times and pair again.
Use the charging checks before resetting anything when an earbud is not detected or will not power on. For repeated dropouts, test another phone or computer before changing hardware. The app has its own requirement: Fairbuds must already be connected in Bluetooth, and Android may need location permission to scan for the earbuds.

Identify the failure before changing settings
The same symptom can have different causes. A phone that cannot see Fairbuds has a pairing problem; a phone that sees them but loses audio may have interference, range, or a damaged Bluetooth record. An earbud that remains at zero percent while the other charges points toward seating, contacts, the earbud battery, or the case’s charging hardware rather than Bluetooth.
| What you observe | First check | Most likely remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Fairbuds do not appear in Bluetooth | Both earbuds in the open case; case LED blinking blue | Enter pairing mode, then forget and reset the Bluetooth record if necessary |
| Pairing fails after Fairbuds were previously used | Remove the saved Fairbuds entry from the phone | Hold the case button for 10 seconds until the LED flashes red three times, then pair again |
| One or both earbuds do not charge | USB-C cable, adapter, case LED, and earbud seating | Use a certified 5V, at least 0.5A adapter and inspect the charging path |
| Audio cuts out or Fairbuds disconnect | Distance, obstructions, another connected device, and another phone | Reconnect, restart the phone, and use the phone’s Bluetooth reset only as a later step |
| The Fairbuds app cannot find them | Bluetooth connection and location permission | Connect in system Bluetooth first, enable Location or Location Services, grant permission, and tap Retry |
| A replacement or additional earbud will not work | Both earbuds charged and together in the case | Run the replacement-earbud synchronization sequence |
Pair Fairbuds for the first time
Put the earbuds into pairing mode
- Place both earbuds in the charging case.
- Leave the lid open.
- Press and hold the function button on the bottom of the case for three seconds.
- Release it when the case LED blinks blue.
- Open your phone’s Bluetooth settings and select Fairbuds. On Android, a Google Fast Pair prompt may appear instead.
Keep both earbuds in the case while pairing mode starts. If the LED does not blink blue, check that the case has charge and that each earbud is seated on its charging contacts. A completely flat case cannot advertise the earbuds reliably.

Reset a failed or corrupted Bluetooth pairing
A reset removes the Fairbuds Bluetooth pairing record from the earbuds. It does not replace the phone-side action: delete or forget the existing Fairbuds entry first so the phone does not keep trying to use stale credentials.
- In the phone’s Bluetooth settings, select the saved Fairbuds entry and choose Forget, Unpair, or Remove this device.
- Put both earbuds in the case and leave the lid open.
- Press and hold the case function button for 10 seconds.
- Wait for the LED to flash red three times. That pattern confirms that the Bluetooth reset is complete.
- Return to the phone’s Bluetooth list and select Fairbuds. Keep the case open until pairing finishes.
Use the 10-second reset when Fairbuds were previously paired to another phone, when the phone reports an authentication or connection error, or when audio drops immediately after a seemingly successful connection. Do not use it as the first response to a dead battery; a reset cannot repair a case that is not powering the earbuds.
Connect Fairbuds to two devices with dual-point
Fairbuds support dual-point connectivity, allowing two devices to remain connected. This is useful for switching between a phone and a computer, but it can also make troubleshooting confusing if both devices are competing for the audio connection.
- Put both earbuds in the case and leave the lid open.
- Hold the case button for three seconds until the LED blinks blue.
- Pair Fairbuds with the second device.
- On the first device, open its Bluetooth menu and reconnect Fairbuds.
If dropouts happen only when both devices are nearby, temporarily disconnect Fairbuds from one device and test with a single connection. Re-establish dual-point after the single-device connection is stable.

Fix Fairbuds that will not charge
Use the specified USB-C power source
Fairbuds charge through USB-C. Fairphone specifies a certified power adapter supplying 5V and at least 0.5A. Use a known-good USB-C cable and that type of adapter before assuming the case or an earbud has failed. A cable can carry enough power for another gadget yet have a damaged connector or intermittent contact that prevents the case from charging.
| Case LED | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Low charge | Leave the case connected to the specified adapter and check again after charging |
| Yellow | Medium charge | Continue charging; verify that the cable remains firmly inserted |
| Green | Fully charged | Remove the cable and test whether the earbuds charge in the case |
Fairphone states that the earbuds take approximately two hours to reach a full charge. A 10-minute charge can provide up to 90 minutes of playback; that figure is a maximum claim, so volume, codec use, calls, and battery condition can reduce actual time.
Check each earbud’s position
- Remove both earbuds and inspect the charging contacts on the earbuds and in the case for debris or anything preventing contact.
- Reinsert each earbud in its matching recess and press it down gently so it sits fully on the contacts.
- Close and reopen the lid, then observe whether the case recognizes both earbuds.
- Try the known-good USB-C cable and certified adapter again.
If one earbud charges and the other remains unavailable, swap the earbuds’ positions briefly. If the problem follows the same earbud, its battery or contact area is the stronger suspect. If the problem stays with one side of the case, inspect that side’s seating and charging contact.

A working battery does not rule out a charging-core fault. Fairphone identifies the charging core as a replaceable part when charging fails despite a battery that is known to work. Persistent failure with multiple cables and a compliant adapter, especially when one case position never recognizes an earbud, warrants a replaceable part or support assessment rather than repeated Bluetooth resets.

Stop Fairbuds from disconnecting
Check range and obstructions
Fairphone reports a controlled, unobstructed range of 10 meters. Walls, furniture, a body blocking the phone, crowded wireless environments, and a phone inside a bag can reduce that distance. Test with the phone close to the case and earbuds, then increase distance gradually. A connection that is stable nearby but fails at a particular location points to range or interference rather than a failed pairing record.
Run the phone-side Bluetooth checklist
- Confirm Fairbuds are switched on, charged, and within range.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it on again.
- Remove Fairbuds from the phone’s saved Bluetooth devices, then pair them again.
- Test Fairbuds with another phone or computer. This separates an earbud problem from a handset-specific problem.
- Restart the Fairphone or other handset.
- If the failure affects multiple Bluetooth accessories, use Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi.
The final step erases saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth connections. Record Wi-Fi passwords and be prepared to pair every Bluetooth accessory again before using it. Because it affects the entire handset, reserve this reset for cases where toggling Bluetooth, reconnecting Fairbuds, restarting, and testing another device have not helped.
Interpret the result of the another-device test
- Fairbuds work normally with another phone: concentrate on the original phone’s Bluetooth record, operating-system settings, or nearby wireless conditions.
- Fairbuds fail in the same way on multiple devices: charge both earbuds, perform the Fairbuds 10-second Bluetooth reset, and then reassess. Continued failure suggests a Fairbuds-side fault.
- Only one earbud drops: check that earbud’s charge level and seating before changing phone settings.
- Dropouts occur only with two devices connected: disconnect the second device and test single-device operation, then rebuild dual-point.
Make the Fairbuds app discover the earbuds
The Fairbuds app does not replace system Bluetooth pairing. The phone must already show Fairbuds as connected in its Bluetooth settings before the app can discover them.
- Pair Fairbuds in the phone’s Bluetooth settings first.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled.
- On Android, enable Location and grant the Fairbuds app permission to access it. Android requires location access to scan for nearby Bluetooth Low Energy devices.
- On iOS, enable Location Services and allow the app’s requested location permission.
- Open the Fairbuds app and tap Retry when prompted.
Location permission here is a scanning requirement; it does not mean the app needs your physical location for audio playback. If the app still cannot see Fairbuds, close it, reconnect Fairbuds in the system Bluetooth menu, and open the app again rather than repeatedly pairing inside the app.

Synchronize a replacement or additional earbud
Replacing a lost earbud or adding a matching unit requires the two earbuds to exchange their case pairing information. Charge both units before starting.
- Place both earbuds in the charging case.
- Make sure the case and earbuds have charge.
- Press and hold the case button for 10 seconds, until the LED blinks white.
- Close the case and leave it closed for at least five seconds.
- Open the case and pair Fairbuds with the phone again through Bluetooth.
If the replacement procedure does not complete, repeat it with both earbuds firmly seated. A missing charge on either side can prevent synchronization, so solve the charging issue first if the LED or phone does not recognize one unit.

Fairphone’s 2026 FAQ says it aims to support spare-part availability until the end of 2030. Availability can depend on region and stock, so check the current official support and parts channels for your location before ordering.
Choose a part-based repair when the same physical side repeatedly fails to charge, a known-good cable and compliant adapter make no difference, or the failure follows one earbud across multiple phones. Choose phone-side troubleshooting when Fairbuds work on another device or when every Bluetooth accessory fails on the same handset.
A practical decision path
| Evidence | Next action | Why this order makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| LED never reaches blue pairing mode | Charge the case with USB-C, 5V and at least 0.5A; reseat both earbuds | Pairing cannot start reliably without power and contact |
| Previously paired phone refuses to reconnect | Forget Fairbuds, hold the case button for 10 seconds, then pair again | Both sides of the old pairing record are cleared |
| Fairbuds work on another phone | Toggle Bluetooth, reconnect, restart the original phone, then consider Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi | The evidence points to handset settings rather than the earbuds |
| One earbud remains at zero charge | Reseat it, try another cable and adapter, and compare the failure with the opposite case slot | This separates contact, cable, case, and earbud faults |
| App says no earbuds found but Bluetooth says connected | Enable Location or Location Services, grant app permission, and tap Retry | The app needs a Bluetooth Low Energy scan permission |
| Replacement earbud is not recognized | Run the 10-second white-blink synchronization sequence, then pair again | The replacement must be synchronized with the existing earbud |
When troubleshooting is finished
Stop repeating resets once the evidence points to a physical component. A case that will not charge with several known-good USB-C cables and a certified 5V, at least 0.5A adapter, an earbud that fails in either case position, or a charging fault that follows the same side across devices is more likely to need a replaceable battery, earbud, or charging core. Use the Fairbuds app’s support material or Fairphone’s official repair channels to identify the correct part for your model and region.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After any repair or replacement, charge both earbuds, complete the appropriate synchronization or Bluetooth reset procedure, and make a fresh pairing. This prevents an old phone record from being mistaken for a new hardware failure.
