Windows error 0x8007007e means ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND: Windows could not find a module required by the update. The code does not identify one universal DLL or component, so the reliable fix is to work from the least disruptive repair (the Windows Update troubleshooter) through cache, component-store, file-system, and software-conflict checks. A separate procedure applies when the error occurs on a WSUS server.

What error 0x8007007e means

The string shown in the title is often typed as 08007007e, but the Windows HRESULT is normally written 0x8007007e. Microsoft Q&A identifies it as the Windows system error ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND, displayed as “The specified module could not be found.” In an update operation, a module can be a DLL, an update component, or another file needed by the particular upgrade path.

That meaning is important because the number alone cannot tell you which file is missing. The failing operation might be a regular Windows 10 or Windows 11 update, a feature upgrade, a driver-related update, or a server synchronization task. Start with the consumer-PC procedure below unless the machine is a WSUS server or is managed through WSUS and Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager.

Identify your situation before changing anything

Normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer

Use the desktop procedure when Windows Update fails on an individual PC that is not synchronizing updates for other computers. You will work in Settings, Services, an elevated Command Prompt, and possibly the recovery environment. The first steps are reversible and normally preserve installed applications and personal files.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.

WSUS or Configuration Manager server

If the message appears while synchronizing update metadata on WSUS, do not begin by deleting a home PC’s cache. Microsoft documents a specific case involving hotfix 3095113 and the Upgrades classification. That server-side repair is covered separately below.

Record the failure

Before deeper repair, write down the exact error, the update’s KB number if one is shown, and your Windows edition, version, and build. These details distinguish a single update failure from a broader servicing problem and are required when you ask an administrator or Microsoft support for help. If the error names a particular application or driver, record that name as well; 0x8007007e does not supply it by itself.

Protect your files and prepare

Microsoft recommends backing up personal files before troubleshooting. Copy documents, photos, browser exports, and other irreplaceable data to a separate location. A USB flash drive can hold a file backup or Windows installation and recovery media; it is not itself a repair for error 0x8007007e.

  • Connect the PC to reliable power, especially before a long disk check or a restart-based repair.
  • Close applications and save work before restarting or running commands that may schedule a check at boot.
  • Use an account with administrator rights. Commands that change services or repair Windows will fail or be incomplete in a standard Command Prompt.
  • Keep the update name and build information available so you can test the same update after every repair step.

Repair Windows Update on a regular PC

1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

The troubleshooter is the lowest-risk first action and can correct common service and configuration conditions without manually deleting files.

  1. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Windows Update and select Run. Microsoft also directs Windows 11 users to the Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app; follow that guided flow if it opens instead of the Settings tool.
  3. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  4. Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and allow it to apply the fixes it reports.

Read the result rather than dismissing it. If the tool says it made a change, note that change for your records. The troubleshooter cannot identify every missing module, so an apparently successful run does not prove that the update itself is repaired.

2. Restart Windows and retry the update

Restart after the troubleshooter completes. When Windows is back at the desktop, open Settings > Windows Update (or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10), select Check for updates, and try the same update again. A restart completes pending service changes and releases files that an update may still have open.

If the update installs, no further repair is needed. If the identical code returns, continue in order and test after each major step so you know which change affected the result.

3. Reset the Windows Update cache

A damaged or incomplete download can leave update metadata that repeatedly calls a missing component. Resetting the cache removes downloaded update content while leaving your personal files and installed programs in place. Use either the Services console or an elevated Command Prompt.

  1. Open Services by pressing the Windows key, typing services, and opening the Services app. Locate Windows Update, right-click it, and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
  2. In File Explorer, enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar. Delete the contents of that folder. If you are following Microsoft’s narrower cache procedure, clear the contents of its Download subfolder instead. Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself.
  3. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
  4. Restart Windows. After sign-in, return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.

If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped before trying again. An elevated Command Prompt provides the same service control when the graphical console is inconvenient: run net stop wuauserv, clear the folder contents in File Explorer, then run net start wuauserv. Do not interrupt a download that is actively installing; wait for the service to stop and for the folder to become available.

4. Repair the component store and protected files

Windows servicing depends on the component store and protected system files. Microsoft’s standard sequence is DISM first and System File Checker second, because SFC can use the repaired component store as its source.

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator. Type cmd in Windows Search, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and wait for it to finish. Do not close the window while the operation is running.
  3. In the same elevated window, run sfc /scannow. Allow the verification to reach completion.
  4. Restart Windows, open Windows Update, and retry the failed update.

DISM repairs the running Windows image’s component store; SFC checks protected operating-system files. These commands do not tell you which individual module caused the original update failure, but they can restore files that servicing needs. If either command reports that it could not complete, keep the exact message with your update notes rather than repeatedly launching the same command.

5. Check the system drive for corruption

Storage errors can damage update files or prevent Windows from reading a required module. Microsoft documents chkdsk C: /f /r for update-related disk errors. The /f option repairs file-system errors and /r looks for bad sectors and attempts to recover readable information.

  1. Back up important files before scheduling the check.
  2. Open an elevated Command Prompt.
  3. Run chkdsk C: /f /r.
  4. If Windows reports that the volume is in use, type Y when asked whether to schedule the check for the next restart.
  5. Restart and let the disk check finish. Interrupting it can leave the file system in a worse state.
  6. After Windows starts, retry the update.

This is more time-consuming and less easily reversible than clearing a cache. Use it when corruption is suspected or when the update and file-repair steps continue to fail, not as the first response to a one-off download problem.

6. Isolate security software or an incompatible program

Microsoft’s update guidance lists antivirus or other security software, incompatible applications, and incompatible drivers among possible causes of update failures. A security product can block a file that the update expects to load, producing a missing-module message even when the file exists.

Bootable USB Flash Drive for Windows 7, Windows 7 Ultimate/Home/Pro 32/64 Bit Bootable USB Install & Recovery
  • NOTE: This USB flash drive does not include a Windows key, you must have a Windows key to activate Windows, but you can still clean install or reinstall Windows 7.
  • Latest Version: Deployed with the latest official original version of Windows 7 (SP1), no viruses, no spyware, 100% clean.
  • Professional: Using professional Windows 7 production tool to ensure product quality.
  • Compatibility: Compatible with all PC brands, laptop or desktop, 64-bit/32-bit, Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, Toshiba and more.
  • Plug & Play: Includes user guide and online technical support services. Plug it in and you are ready to go.
  1. Check whether the failure began after installing or updating security software, a system utility, or a driver.
  2. Use the product’s documented temporary-disable or clean-boot procedure only long enough to test the Windows update. If the software must be removed to perform the test, make a restore or reinstallation plan first.
  3. Retry the update while the suspected conflict is isolated.
  4. Restore protection immediately after the test. Do not leave the PC without security software any longer than necessary.

A clean boot is a diagnostic state, not a permanent operating mode. If the update succeeds only in that state, re-enable services and startup items in groups until the conflicting program is identified. If it still fails, restore the normal startup configuration and continue with log collection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Use installation or recovery media only when normal servicing will not work

If the update remains broken after cache, component-store, file, disk, and conflict checks, installation or recovery media may be the next escalation. A USB flash drive can carry that media or a backup, but it does not automatically repair the missing module. Follow the instructions for your exact Windows edition and build, and confirm that your backup is complete before choosing a reset, repair install, or other recovery action.

Recovery operations can change applications, settings, or boot state. Treat them as a separate decision from the routine commands above, and verify the update’s KB number and Windows build before proceeding so that you do not apply media intended for a different release.

8. Collect logs and escalate with precise details

If the code persists, gather the information an administrator will need:

  • The complete error text and the exact update or KB number.
  • Windows edition, version, and build.
  • Whether the troubleshooter, cache reset, DISM, SFC, disk check, or clean-boot test changed the behavior.
  • Relevant entries from Windows Update logs and the Component-Based Servicing (CBS) log, including the time of the failure and any named file or package.
  • Whether the PC is managed by WSUS or Configuration Manager.

The generic HRESULT cannot reveal the missing module by itself. Logs may identify the package or file that failed, allowing a targeted repair instead of repeating every step.

Which step should you choose next?

Situation First action Relative risk and reversibility
One update failed on a personal Windows 10 or 11 PC Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and retry Low risk; changes are generally automatic and reversible
Failure returns after a restart Stop Windows Update and clear the SoftwareDistribution contents Standard maintenance; downloaded update files are recreated
DISM or SFC reports corruption Complete DISM, then SFC, restart, and retry Standard repair; allow each scan to finish
Disk errors or repeated file corruption are suspected Back up files and schedule chkdsk C: /f /r More time and a restart; interruption can increase risk
Only a clean boot allows installation Re-enable startup items in groups to find the conflict Diagnostic; restore normal startup and protection afterward
WSUS synchronization fails with 0x8007007e Use the hotfix and synchronization procedure below Server-wide impact; coordinate the maintenance window

The documented WSUS and Configuration Manager case

Microsoft documents a specific enterprise scenario in which 0x8007007e occurs when WSUS synchronization is attempted without hotfix 3095113 installed before the Upgrades classification is enabled. If synchronization already downloaded upgrade metadata in that state, the metadata can be invalid. This is not the normal procedure for a standalone home PC.

Repair sequence for the affected server

  1. Stop or otherwise repair the affected synchronization state so that another synchronization does not continue using the invalid metadata.
  2. Install hotfix 3095113 according to the server’s supported maintenance process.
  3. Delete the previously synchronized upgrade updates that were obtained before the hotfix and classification change.
  4. Enable the Upgrades classification again.
  5. Perform a full synchronization and monitor the result.

Coordinate this sequence with the WSUS or Configuration Manager administrator because deleting synchronized updates and performing a full synchronization affects downstream clients. Keep a record of the server version, synchronization time, and any remaining error text. Do not apply this server procedure to a personal computer simply because the hexadecimal code looks identical.

Common pitfalls and how to recover

Deleting the wrong folder

Clear the contents of SoftwareDistribution, or only its Download subfolder when following the narrower procedure. Do not delete unrelated folders under C:Windows. If you removed only downloaded update files, Windows can recreate them after the service restarts; if you deleted a different system folder, stop and restore from backup or seek administrator help rather than continuing.

Running commands without elevation

DISM, SFC, CHKDSK scheduling, and service control require an elevated context. If you see an access-denied message, close the window, reopen Command Prompt with Run as administrator, and repeat the command once. Do not assume a command succeeded because the window accepted the text.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stopping a scan too early

DISM, SFC, and CHKDSK can appear idle while processing. Closing the window, powering off, or forcing a restart can leave repair work incomplete. Wait for a completion message; for CHKDSK, wait until Windows returns to the sign-in screen.

Disabling protection and forgetting to restore it

Security isolation is a test, not a fix. Re-enable the product or restore the normal security configuration immediately after the retry. If the update succeeds only with protection disabled, investigate the product’s compatibility guidance instead of leaving the machine unprotected.

Assuming the code names a specific DLL

ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND describes the failure class, not the filename. Avoid downloading a DLL from an unrelated website or copying one from another computer. Use the update and servicing logs to identify the required package, then repair Windows through supported tools or media.

When the repair is complete

After a successful installation, restart once more if Windows requests it and confirm that Windows Update reports the expected KB or build. Re-enable any startup items changed for clean-boot testing, confirm that security protection is active, and keep the backup and repair notes until the system has completed another normal update cycle. If the same code returns with a different update, treat that as a new failure and compare the two sets of logs rather than assuming the missing module is identical.
