Excessive foam is usually a detergent-delivery problem, not a pump problem. Stop the machine, release pressure, dilute or replace detergent if it is too thick, fit the low-pressure black SOAP nozzle, then check the siphon hose, filter, injector and spray tip for kinks, leaks or dried soap. Clean or replace damaged parts and flush the detergent path with clean water after every use. Use the exact detergent, dilution and connector instructions for your pressure-washer model.
What excessive foam means
A pressure washer creates foam when detergent, water and air mix. A small amount of foam can be normal, especially with a foaming detergent or a downstream injector. Foam becomes a fault when it is unusually thick, arrives in bursts, comes from the machine rather than the spray, prevents detergent from siphoning correctly, or leaves the washer unable to rinse cleanly.

The detergent system is normally a low-pressure circuit. Water moving through an injector creates suction that draws detergent from a container through a small hose and filter. The correct nozzle or setting is essential: a high-pressure nozzle can remove the suction needed to pull detergent. A restriction, air leak or detergent that is too viscous changes the water-to-chemical ratio and can produce dense foam or stop pickup altogether.

Safety steps before troubleshooting
- Switch the pressure washer off and disconnect the power source. For a petrol model, follow the operator manual’s shutdown and fuel-safety instructions.
- Close the water supply.
- Squeeze the spray-gun trigger until water flow and trapped pressure stop.
- Engage the trigger lock if your gun has one.
- Only then remove a nozzle, hose, filter or injector. Keep hands away from a pressurized spray tip.
- Use the model’s manual for any additional lockout, cool-down or chemical-handling requirements.
Never test a disconnected detergent line with the machine running. High-pressure water can inject through skin, and detergent can irritate eyes or skin; wear eye protection and follow the chemical label.

Use this troubleshooting order
Work from the simplest cause to the least accessible one. This sequence prevents you from buying a nozzle when the real fault is a blocked filter or cracked hose.
- Identify the detergent. Confirm that the product is intended for pressure washers. Thick vehicle shampoo, household cleaner or an undiluted concentrate may be too viscous for the injector. Action Cleaning Systems advises diluting detergent that is too thick and using the manufacturer’s detergent. Shark’s troubleshooting guidance likewise says high-viscosity detergent must be diluted to specification.
- Follow the label and machine dilution instructions. There is no universal ratio. Measure the detergent and water exactly as the detergent label and pressure-washer manual require. Do not assume that a ratio suitable for one injector, model or chemical is safe for another.
- Select the soap setting. Fit the low-pressure black SOAP nozzle when the machine uses a separate nozzle. Kärcher’s operator guidance states: “Install the black low pressure stream jet nozzle (SOAP) on the spray lance.” Other machines may use a dial, an adjustable lance or a built-in detergent setting; use the configuration specified for your model.
- Remove high-pressure restrictions. A high-pressure-hose extension can prevent siphoning on some Briggs & Stratton machines. Return the washer to its standard hose and low-pressure soap configuration while diagnosing it.
- Inspect the pickup hose and filter. With the machine depressurized, trace the tube from the detergent container to the injector. Look for kinks, pinched sections, loose clamps, cracks, soft spots, dried detergent and a filter that is above the liquid surface. Clean a blocked screen or replace it if it is damaged. Route the hose in a smooth path without sharp bends.
- Clean the injector and spray tip. Dried chemical can block the injector head, metering valve or nozzle orifice. Follow the cleaning method in the operator manual. Do not enlarge a nozzle hole with a drill, wire or other improvised tool; changing the orifice changes pressure and flow and can damage the spray pattern.
- Flush the system. Put the pickup tube in clean water, select the soap setting and run clean water through the detergent circuit for the period specified by the manual. This removes residue before it dries inside the filter or injector.
- Escalate persistent faults. If the detergent path is clean, the chemical is correctly diluted and the proper low-pressure setting still produces abnormal foam, use the manufacturer’s service procedure. An injector, unloader or pump fault may require model-specific parts and pressure testing.
Diagnose the symptom
| What you observe | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Very thick foam immediately after switching to soap | Detergent is too concentrated or too viscous | Label dilution, machine-approved chemical and detergent temperature; mix a fresh, correctly measured solution |
| No detergent is drawn | Wrong nozzle, wrong setting, blocked injector, blocked filter or hose not submerged | Black SOAP nozzle or model-specific soap setting, injector screen, filter and liquid level |
| Foam arrives in pulses | Air entering through a loose connection, cracked hose or intermittent blockage | Clamps, hose cracks, filter seal and kinks; replace leaking tubing |
| Foam decreases when the hose is moved | Kinked or pinched pickup tube | Reroute the tube with a wide bend and keep it away from wheels, hinges and hot surfaces |
| Detergent starts flowing, then stops | Filter or injector screen is loading with dried chemical | Remove and clean the screen; replace a distorted or uncleanable filter |
| Foam appears around a connection | Loose fitting or split tubing drawing air | Tighten the connection without over-torquing plastic; replace cracked tubing or seals |
| Foam remains abnormal with clean water | Internal injector, unloader or pump issue | Stop repeated testing and follow the model’s service procedure |
Correct the detergent and dilution
Choose a pressure-washer detergent
Use a chemical identified by its manufacturer for pressure-washer use and for the surface you are cleaning. A product can be safe for the surface yet unsuitable for a small injector if it is too thick, contains solids or is designed to be applied with a separate foam sprayer. The detergent label and the pressure-washer manual take priority over generic advice.
Mix a fresh solution
Empty an unknown or contaminated mixture and prepare a new batch using the specified ratio. Stir gently rather than shaking a container full of concentrate, which can add air before the solution reaches the injector. Do not add extra detergent to compensate for weak cleaning; excessive chemical can increase foam and leave residue.

Detergent that has partially dried, separated or thickened in a cold container may not pass through the filter as designed. Bring it to the temperature permitted on its label, mix it as directed and discard material that remains lumpy or contaminated. Never heat chemical in an improvised container.

Select the correct nozzle or soap setting
Detergent suction normally occurs only at low pressure. On a nozzle-based system, remove the high-pressure tip and install the black low-pressure SOAP nozzle on the spray lance. On an adjustable lance, turn the selector to the manufacturer’s detergent position. On an onboard tank, select the chemical setting shown in the manual.
Do not judge a nozzle by color alone: color conventions differ between manufacturers and models. Read the marking on the tip or manual. A replacement must match the washer’s pressure, flow, wand connection and detergent function. A high-pressure tip may rinse well but will not necessarily draw chemical.
Inspect the siphon hose and filter
Check hose routing
Remove the pickup tube and lay it out straight. A tight bend can collapse the tube internally even when the outside looks intact. Keep the tube short enough for the injector to lift the solution and ensure the filter remains fully submerged. Do not let the tube rest against a hot engine, exhaust component or sharp edge.

Inspect every joint for a loose clamp, flattened seal or split end. An air leak can interrupt the siphon and create frothy, inconsistent output. Tighten fittings to the manual’s specification. If a plastic barb or tube is cracked, replacement is more reliable than sealant; chemical-resistant parts must match the original size and material.

Clean or replace the filter
Rinse a reusable filter in clean water and remove residue from its screen without damaging the mesh. If the screen is torn, permanently clogged or missing its seal, replace it. A filter that is not submerged cannot draw liquid even when the injector is operating correctly.
Clean the injector, metering valve and spray tip
The injector is a small, high-consequence part: a narrow passage can be restricted by dried soap, grit or mineral deposits. Remove it only as the manual permits and note the order of seals, springs and metering components. Wash parts with the cleaner approved for that chemical and rinse thoroughly.
For a removable spray tip, use the manufacturer’s cleaning tool or method. Never force a larger object through the orifice. If the tip is deformed, corroded or still restricted after cleaning, replace it with the exact pressure-and-flow-rated part. Do not substitute a tip solely because its connector appears to fit.
Flush the detergent circuit after every use
- After cleaning, place the pickup tube in a container of clean water.
- Install the low-pressure soap nozzle or select the detergent setting.
- Run the washer until clear water exits and the detergent smell or visible residue is gone, following the manual’s maximum run time.
- Switch off, close the water supply and release pressure before storing the machine.
- Drain or cap the chemical line as the manual directs. Store detergent separately in its original labeled container.
Flushing prevents dried soap from narrowing the injector, sticking a metering valve or blocking the filter. It also reduces cross-contamination when changing chemicals.

When a replacement part is the right fix
Replace a component when cleaning cannot restore its geometry or seal. A nozzle replacement will not repair a cracked siphon hose, and a new detergent will not clear a blocked injector.
| Part or supply | Use it when | Compatibility checks |
|---|---|---|
| Low-pressure soap nozzle | The original tip is worn, blocked or lost | Model, rated pressure and flow, wand connection and soap function |
| Siphon hose and filter | Tubing is cracked, hardened, kinked or leaking, or the filter cannot be cleaned | Tube diameter, length, chemical resistance, filter orientation and connector style |
| Injector or metering valve | Correct detergent, low-pressure setting and a clean pickup path still fail | Exact model and revision; internal injector dimensions and seals are not universal |
| Detergent concentrate | The existing product is not approved, has thickened or gives an unsuitable mix | Pressure-washer approval, surface compatibility and label dilution |
Before ordering, record the pressure washer’s model and serial information, wand connection, hose diameter and the part number printed on the old component. Manufacturer manuals are model-specific; a connector that looks similar may have a different orifice, seal or chemical rating.

Some machines need adequate incoming water flow for the injector to work. A partly closed tap, restricted garden hose, blocked inlet screen or undersized supply can disturb the water stream that creates suction. Open the supply fully, remove kinks and clean the washer’s water-inlet screen according to the manual. Do not exceed the model’s maximum inlet pressure.

Common mistakes that make foaming worse
- Using a high-pressure nozzle while expecting detergent suction.
- Pouring concentrate directly into the tank because a different product used that ratio.
- Leaving the filter above the liquid or allowing the pickup tube to float out of the container.
- Pinching the hose under a wheel or sharply bending it around the frame.
- Continuing to run the pump after the chemical container is empty.
- Drilling or filing a nozzle to “unblock” it.
- Mixing chemicals without checking label compatibility.
- Storing the machine with detergent in the injector instead of flushing with water.
Decision guide: clean, replace or service
Clean it yourself
Clean the filter, pickup hose and accessible nozzle when the parts are intact and the manual describes their removal. This is appropriate for dried residue, a visible screen blockage or a kink that disappears when the hose is rerouted.
Replace the part
Replace tubing, filters, seals or nozzles that are cracked, permanently deformed, leaking or chemically damaged. Match material and dimensions, not just appearance.
Use manufacturer service
Stop DIY troubleshooting when the injector body is damaged, pressure is unstable with clean water, the machine leaks internally, or the correct detergent path still produces abnormal foam. Internal pump and unloader work can require model-specific pressure measurements and safety procedures.
Preventive maintenance schedule
- Every use: Use approved, correctly diluted detergent and flush the chemical path with clean water.
- After storage or a long pause: Inspect the filter and hose for dried residue, brittleness and insect blockage before connecting chemical.
- When changing detergents: Flush until the water runs clear to avoid reactions or residue between products.
- Before seasonal storage: Follow the manual’s water-draining, pump-protection and chemical-storage procedure; do not leave detergent in the siphon circuit.
- Whenever flow changes: Check the inlet screen, hose routing and nozzle before assuming the pump has failed.
What to record if you need support
Service staff can diagnose the problem faster if you provide the exact model and serial number, detergent name and dilution, nozzle or setting used, whether the pickup tube was submerged, whether a hose extension was fitted, and what happened during a clean-water test. Photograph damaged connectors and note whether foam came from the spray, the detergent container or a machine joint. Do not continue operating a unit that leaks pressurized water or chemical.
