How to Fix “Error wait: 63/300” in a Palo Alto BGP Session

“Error wait: 63/300” is a log context, not a formally documented Palo Alto error code. In the Palo Alto Networks LIVEcommunity case where this phrase appears, a PA-500 BGP session reached Established, disconnected back to Active, and the peer reported “Last error: Received: Malformed AS_PATH.” The same case involved more than 2,000 advertised routes against a stated PA-500 forwarding-table capacity of 1,250 entries. Start by confirming the last error, checking route volume, and capturing the BGP exchange before changing several settings at once.

What “Error wait: 63/300” means

The exact string is documented in a December 2017 Palo Alto Networks LIVEcommunity discussion about a PA-500. It appeared while the BGP neighbor repeatedly moved from Established to a disconnected or Active state. The peer-side diagnostic was “Last error: Received: Malformed AS_PATH.”

There is no current authoritative Palo Alto reference in the available material that independently decodes 63/300 as a standalone error code. Treat it as context from the session log, then use the accompanying last-error text and packet evidence to identify the fault. Do not assume that the number alone proves a timer, a memory condition, or a specific Palo Alto software defect.

Why the route count is an important clue

The case reported that the peer advertised more than 2,000 BGP routes while the PA-500 forwarding-table capacity was stated there as up to 1,250 entries. Those figures are case-specific historical values, not a universal specification for every PA-500 software release or every table type. They nevertheless show why route scale must be checked before treating the disconnect as a simple neighbor configuration error.

A route-volume problem and a malformed path attribute can also coexist. An over-sized update may expose an interoperability or policy-transformation problem, while a malformed AS_PATH can cause the receiver to reject updates regardless of capacity. Confirm the actual failure with a capture rather than changing the route policy solely because the two numbers look different.

Collect evidence before changing the configuration

Confirm the state transition

  • Record the neighbor address, local and peer autonomous-system numbers, and the time of each transition.
  • Verify that the session reaches Established and then returns to Active or disconnects.
  • Copy the complete “Last error” text, including whether it says Received: Malformed AS_PATH or reports something else.

Record the advertised and accepted prefixes

  • Obtain the peer’s advertised-prefix count and the number your firewall accepts.
  • Note whether the neighbor is intended to provide a full table, a default route, or a limited set of business prefixes.
  • Save the current inbound policy before editing it so that you can restore the original reachability behavior.

Check recent changes

List changes on both ends that preceded the first failure: autonomous-system-number edits, route-policy or aggregation changes, software upgrades, and changes to the device receiving the updates. A timestamped change list helps distinguish a new malformed attribute from a pre-existing capacity mismatch.

Step-by-step fix

1. Verify the peer’s last error

Open the BGP peer status and event details on the Palo Alto device and on the remote router. If the receiver explicitly reports Malformed AS_PATH, keep that evidence as the primary lead. If the last error is different, follow that error instead of applying the steps below mechanically; 63/300 by itself does not identify the cause.

Check whether the error occurs on every update or only when a particular route batch is sent. A failure that appears immediately after the peer begins advertising a large table points to a scale or attribute-processing issue, but timing is only a clue until a packet capture confirms it.

2. Compare route volume with the receiving platform’s capacity

Measure the number of prefixes the peer advertises, not just the number currently visible in the routing table. Compare that count with the capacity documented for your exact hardware and software. The LIVEcommunity case used a stated PA-500 limit of 1,250 forwarding entries and a peer advertisement exceeding 2,000 routes; do not apply those figures as a current specification without verifying your own platform documentation.

Also distinguish control-plane routes from entries that can be installed in the forwarding table. A neighbor may advertise more routes than the device can install, and policy may reject some of them. Record both the received and installed counts when your operational tooling exposes them.

3. Reduce the inbound table when a full table is unnecessary

If the firewall only needs selected networks, create or adjust an inbound BGP filter to permit those prefixes and reject the rest. Build the policy around an explicit list of required destinations, service dependencies, and a documented default behavior. Apply the narrowest policy that meets the design rather than accepting an arbitrary number of routes.

Filtering changes reachability: networks excluded by the policy will no longer be reachable through this peer. Coordinate the change with the routing owner, record the intended prefix set, and monitor the accepted and installed counts after activation. Keep a rollback copy of the previous policy.

4. Ask the peer for a summary or a default route

When the remote router controls the advertisement, request an aggregate summary or a default route instead of the full table. A summary reduces route load without requiring a long local allow-list, but it can be less granular. Confirm that the summary covers every destination your traffic must reach and that the peer has a valid path for more-specific networks.

Choose between local filtering and a peer summary based on ownership and failure behavior. Local filtering gives you immediate control but requires policy maintenance. A peer summary reduces the update volume at the source but requires coordination and careful validation of aggregate coverage.

5. Validate two-byte and four-byte AS-number compatibility

Confirm that both sides use autonomous-system-number settings that are mutually compatible, including whether a two-byte or four-byte AS number is configured. Check the local AS, peer AS, any local-AS or replacement behavior, and route-policy actions that rewrite path attributes. A mismatch or an invalid transformation can produce an AS_PATH the receiver cannot parse.

Inspect the specific update that triggers the rejection. Do not infer the malformed value from the neighbor’s configured AS number alone; the offending path may have been created by an intermediate router, a route reflector, or a policy transformation.

6. Capture the BGP exchange on the Palo Alto device

The LIVEcommunity case recommends the following diagnostic sequence:

  1. Enable the BGP packet capture with debug routing pcap bgp on.
  2. Display the capture using debug routing pcap bgp view.
  3. Follow the saved capture with view-pcap follow yes debug-pcap <bgp_capture_file>, replacing <bgp_capture_file> with the actual capture filename.

Capture a reproduction window that includes the session reaching Established and then failing. Stop or disable capture according to your normal change-control procedure after collecting the exchange, and preserve the file with the session timestamps and configuration snapshot.

7. Determine where the malformed attribute originates

Use the capture to answer three questions:

  • Did the remote peer send an update containing an invalid AS_PATH?
  • Did an intermediate route-policy transformation alter the attribute before the firewall received it?
  • Does the failure correlate with a software-version or interoperability behavior between the two speakers?

If the peer transmitted the malformed path, provide the peer operator with the captured update and request correction at the source. If a policy transformation produced it, remove or correct that transformation and retest. If both implementations appear to encode the attribute correctly but the receiver still rejects it, escalate with the capture, release information, and exact last-error text rather than repeatedly resetting the session.

8. Retest one change at a time

After correcting the source attribute or reducing the route set, clear or reset the BGP session during an approved maintenance window. Confirm that it remains Established while updates arrive, then verify the accepted and installed prefix counts and test representative destinations. Make only one material change between tests so that the result identifies the effective fix.

If the session stays up with a filtered or summarized table but fails when the larger advertisement returns, the route scale is a decisive operational constraint. If it still fails with a small, known-good prefix set, continue investigating AS-number compatibility, policy transformations, and software interoperability.

9. Size the platform when the full table is required

If your design genuinely requires more than 2,000 prefixes, do not treat filtering as a permanent fix unless the resulting reachability is acceptable. The responder in the cited case stated: If you need to support over 2000 prefixes, you’ll need a larger device. Verify current capacity for the exact Palo Alto model, software release, routing and forwarding requirements, and expected growth with your reseller or Palo Alto before selecting replacement hardware.

Plan migration as a routing change, not merely a hardware swap. Confirm feature support, table headroom, maintenance-window duration, rollback connectivity, and how the new device will preserve required policies and monitoring.

Choosing among the remediation paths

Option Route completeness Hardware impact Operational complexity Reachability effect Best use
Inbound filter Filtered set Retains the current appliance Local policy design and maintenance Denied prefixes are unavailable through this peer Full transit is not required
Peer summary or default route Summary or default, not the full table Retains the current appliance Requires coordination with the peer Depends on aggregate coverage and peer routing The remote operator can change advertisements
Correct AS_PATH or policy transformation Can preserve the intended table No capacity change if the table fits Requires packet inspection and coordinated policy work Preserves reachability when the attribute is repaired The capture identifies a malformed update
Larger BGP-capable appliance Full table, subject to verified specifications Higher hardware and migration cost Design, procurement, and cutover planning Preserves full route visibility when correctly sized Full-table service is a hard requirement

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Decoding 63/300 as a guaranteed code. The phrase is documented as log context; the available authoritative material does not define it independently.
  • Blaming capacity without checking the path attribute. The case includes both a high route count and a malformed-AS_PATH report. Capture the update before deciding which condition is primary.
  • Filtering without documenting reachability. A shorter table is not harmless if an excluded prefix supports production traffic.
  • Changing both routers at once. Coordinated changes can hide which side generated the malformed attribute.
  • Using the historical 1,250 figure as a current guarantee. Treat it as the value stated in that 2017 discussion and verify the specification for your exact release and design.
  • Testing only the neighbor state. An Established session can still have incomplete reachability; check accepted, installed, and application-relevant routes after every fix.

Recovery and escalation checklist

  1. Restore the last known-good inbound policy if a filter causes unexpected reachability loss.
  2. Keep the capture, event timestamps, peer configuration, route counts, and software versions together.
  3. Ask the peer operator to identify the exact update and route-policy stage that generated the rejected AS_PATH.
  4. Escalate to your support channel or Palo Alto with the reproducible symptom, the complete last-error text, and the packet evidence.
  5. If full-table operation remains necessary, obtain a current capacity assessment before committing to a larger appliance.

If the Windows workstation used to administer the firewall also has unrelated crashes, broken system elements, invalid redirects, or excessive temporary and cache files, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for those Windows tasks. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and its free trial is limited by category before a subscription; results vary, and it does not repair every crash or replace correction of the BGP configuration.
