Error Code 996 has no universal meaning. The number is reused by unrelated products, including an Xbox game, UIDAI/ePOS identity services, IRS foreign-trust processing, Ricoh and Lexmark printers, Fronius Solar.web, and an Accutorr Plus medical monitor. The correct fix depends on the complete message, the device or application, and the exact model. Photograph or transcribe the code—including a minus sign, letters, or a suffix—before changing anything.
Why Error Code 996 cannot be fixed with one universal command
A numeric code is meaningful only inside the system that generated it. “996,” “-996,” and “Status 996” can point to entirely different conditions. In the documented examples, one code is solved by installing a game update, another by correcting an identity or tax record, another by checking an accessory’s compatibility, and another by obtaining service for medical hardware.

The number alone does not prove that a computer is infected, that a printer part is defective, or that a network is offline. Do not install a random driver, replace a component, delete system files, or reset an account until you know which product issued the message. The examples below are documented meanings, not an exhaustive list of every system that might use 996.
Identify the source before attempting a fix
- Capture the complete message. Record whether it says
996,-996,Status 996, or includes words such as “Owner TIN Blank,” “SpO Failure 2,” or “communication error.” A leading minus sign can distinguish one condition from another. - Identify the product. Write down the manufacturer, application or service name, exact model, and (for a computer or phone) the operating system. For a printer, include the installed accessories. For a solar system, include the inverter and datalogger details if shown.
- Note what happened immediately before the code. Examples include opening a game, submitting a tax record, scanning an Aadhaar identity, powering on a printer, connecting a mailbox, or viewing a solar dashboard.
- Check the responsible documentation. Use the publisher’s update notes, the manufacturer’s manual or service documentation, or the government agency or service operator’s instructions for that exact product and code.
- Apply only the remedy that matches the source. An Xbox update, an IRS data correction, and a printer-board repair are not interchangeable. If the source remains uncertain, stop and contact the responsible support channel with the full message and model information.

Fix “-996” in The Long Dark on Xbox
What the code means
Hinterland’s update notes describe an issue in which some Xbox players received -996 after the disclaimer screen and were sent back to the home screen. This is a game-specific software problem, not a general Xbox diagnostic code.

Manual steps
- From the Xbox dashboard, open My games & apps, select The Long Dark, and check for an available update. Install the current update before trying deeper troubleshooting.
- After the update finishes, launch the game again and pass the disclaimer screen. A successful launch indicates that the known game issue was addressed.
- If the updated game still returns to the home screen, record the exact code, your Xbox model, the game version shown in the console, and whether the failure occurs every time.
- Send those details through Hinterland’s support channel. Do not treat a generic console reset or an unrelated Windows repair utility as a documented fix for this game error.
If the message is 996 without the minus sign, or appears in another Xbox game, do not assume that the Hinterland fix applies. Recheck the complete wording and the game title.
Fix UIDAI/ePOS Error Code 996
What the code means
The Jammu and Kashmir ePOS FAQ lists “Error Code 996” with the description “Aadhaar Cancelled.” In this context, 996 describes an identity-status result returned by the UIDAI/ePOS process; it is not a hardware fault that can be repaired by restarting a device.
What to do
- Save the transaction details, including the exact spelling of the person’s name, the time of the attempt, the ePOS terminal or operator, and the complete message.
- Confirm that the code came from the intended UIDAI/ePOS workflow and not from a separate printer, biometric device, or local application.
- Follow the issuing authority’s or authorized operator’s process for an Aadhaar cancellation or status question. Ask what identity or enrollment documentation is required before submitting another transaction.
- Do not attempt to bypass the status result by repeatedly retrying, editing identity data without authorization, or using a generic “error 996” repair guide.
Because identity records are regulated and account-specific, only the responsible authority or operator can determine why the status was returned and what correction, if any, is available.

Correct IRS foreign-trust code 996 (“Owner TIN Blank”)
When the code is generated
The Internal Revenue Manual labels code 996 “Owner TIN Blank.” It is generated when the owner-TIN field is blank while a significant entry appears in related owner-name, distribution-date, or fair-market-value fields. This is a data-completeness and transcription issue in foreign-trust processing, not a computer or network failure.
Correction procedure
- Open the source return or record and compare the owner name, owner-TIN field, distribution date, and fair-market-value information with the submitted data.
- Correct any transcription error, such as a TIN entered in the wrong field or omitted during data entry.
- Research the owner TIN using the authorized records and procedures available to the person or organization preparing the filing.
- If the owner TIN is found, enter it in the required owner-TIN field and resubmit or reprocess the record according to the applicable IRS workflow.
- If no TIN can be found after the required research, enter clear code
Cas specified by the Internal Revenue Manual rather than leaving the field blank.
Keep an audit trail of the source record, the research performed, and the correction. If the record involves a filing deadline or a regulated submission, ask the responsible tax professional or IRS support channel which resubmission path applies.
Fix 996 on a printer
Printer codes are model-specific. The two documented examples below require different actions, so identify the exact printer before opening a cover or ordering a part.

Ricoh Aficio 1027: FCU board not ready
On the Ricoh Aficio 1027, code 996 is listed as an FCU board error: the board is connected but not ready. Listed causes include a defective FCU board or a need to download FCU firmware.
- Write down the exact model and code and check the model’s service documentation for the FCU procedure.
- Confirm whether the documentation calls for an FCU firmware download and whether that operation requires a service mode or approved service file.
- Do not remove or reseat the FCU board while the machine is powered. High-voltage and static-sensitive components can be damaged, and an incorrect service operation can create additional faults.
- If the documentation identifies a board defect, arrange service with an authorized technician or a technician qualified for that model. A consumer printer reset is not a substitute for board diagnosis.
Lexmark Optra W820: incompatible mailbox
On the Lexmark Optra W820, code 996 means that the installed mailbox is incompatible with the printer. The documented service sequence is narrower than replacing the printer or changing its software.
- Power the printer off using its normal shutdown procedure and disconnect power if the service instructions require it.
- Verify that the mailbox is the correct model and option for the Optra W820. Compare its identification label and installation instructions with the printer’s supported-accessory documentation.
- Reconnect or reseat the mailbox exactly as the manual describes, making sure it is fully engaged and mechanically secured.
- Power-cycle the printer and check whether the code clears.
- If 996 remains, the documented escalation is a mailbox-control or engine-board diagnosis and possible replacement. Arrange qualified service rather than repeatedly cycling power or forcing the connector.
A mailbox error should not be treated as a universal printer-driver problem. If a different Lexmark model displays 996, obtain that model’s service documentation before using these steps.

Fix Fronius Solar.web Status 996
What the status means
Fronius describes Status 996 as a communication error between the datalogger and Fronius Solar.web. The status indicates that the monitoring path is offline; it does not, by itself, establish that the inverter has stopped producing power.
Network checks
- Check whether other devices at the site can reach the internet through the same router.
- Inspect the router’s power, network-link indicators, and cabling or wireless connection used by the datalogger.
- Restart the router using its normal power procedure and allow it to finish reconnecting before checking Solar.web again.
- Check the Solar.web status after the network is stable. Record the time, the exact status text, and whether the inverter or datalogger shows any separate local alarm.
- If the system remains offline, contact the installer with the inverter model, datalogger details, router changes, and the complete Status 996 message. The installer can determine whether the datalogger needs configuration or service.
Avoid changing advanced network settings or factory-resetting the datalogger without the installer’s instructions; doing so can remove site-specific configuration and make remote diagnosis harder.

Why this requires qualified service
On an Accutorr Plus medical monitor, code 996 is identified as “SpO Failure 2,” meaning that the SpO system failed its self-test. A failed oxygen-saturation subsystem can affect clinical measurements, so improvised repair is unsafe.

Safe response
- Stop using the monitor for clinical decisions until the responsible clinical-engineering or service process confirms that it is operating correctly.
- Record the exact code, the time it appeared, the monitor’s model and serial information, and any associated messages or indicators.
- Follow the monitor’s service manual and your facility’s equipment-failure procedure. Use only the checks that the manual assigns to the operator.
- Have qualified biomedical-equipment personnel or the manufacturer’s authorized service channel perform diagnosis, repair, and verification.
- Use an approved alternative monitor according to local clinical procedure if patient monitoring is required while the unit is out of service.
Do not open the monitor, substitute an unapproved sensor, or clear the code merely to return the device to operation. Clearing a message does not prove that the SpO self-test has passed.
What to send support when 996 persists
Support can resolve a model-specific code much faster when the initial report contains the information needed to reproduce or classify it.
- Exact code, including a minus sign, prefix, suffix, or status label
- Verbatim on-screen message and a clear photograph, with personal or tax information redacted where appropriate
- Manufacturer, product name, exact model, serial or asset identifier when requested
- Operating system, application or firmware version, and update history for software products
- The action that triggered the message and whether it occurs consistently
- Steps already taken and the result of each step
- For network systems, router or connectivity changes and the time the system went offline
- For regulated identity or tax records, the authorized transaction or filing reference rather than sensitive credentials
Use the support channel belonging to the product that generated the code: the game publisher for The Long Dark, the issuing authority or operator for UIDAI/ePOS, the IRS workflow or tax professional for foreign-trust data, the printer manufacturer or qualified technician for printer hardware, the installer for Fronius Solar.web, and qualified medical-equipment service for an Accutorr Plus monitor.

When a generic “error 996” guide is the wrong tool
Stop following a generic guide if the message concerns identity status, a tax record, a medical self-test, or service-level printer hardware. Those systems have different authorization, safety, and evidence requirements. Likewise, do not assume that a code seen on Windows has the same meaning as one seen on an Xbox, solar datalogger, or printer.
The reliable sequence is always the same: preserve the full message, identify the originating product, consult that product’s documentation, perform the documented remedy, and escalate with complete model information when the code remains.
