Start with the least destructive fix: restart Windows, check whether the problem began after a driver update, and use Device Manager’s Roll Back Driver option when it is available. If that fails, reinstall the correct AMD or laptop-manufacturer driver with Factory Reset, then use AMD Cleanup Utility for a deeper removal.
Windows Code 43 means the graphics driver reported a failure and Windows stopped the device. It does not, by itself, prove that the Radeon GPU is permanently dead. A driver regression, corrupted installation, Windows replacing the driver, laptop compatibility problems, unstable overclocking, power delivery, firmware, or failing hardware can all produce the same status.
What AMD GPU Code 43 means
In Device Manager, Code 43 means that the device driver reported a failure during startup, so Windows stopped the device. Microsoft lists both driver failures and hardware problems as possible causes: Microsoft’s Code 43 definition.
Common signs include a yellow exclamation mark beside the Radeon adapter, Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, low resolution, missing refresh-rate options, games using integrated graphics, disappearing monitors, black screens, flickering, driver timeouts, or AMD Software refusing to open. These symptoms do not identify one cause by themselves.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
Confirm the exact status
- Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the AMD GPU and select Properties.
- Read Device status, then record the model and the driver version/date on the Driver tab.
Microsoft documents this path, along with driver rollback, uninstall, and reinstall options, in its Code 43 troubleshooting guide.
Before changing anything
- Record the exact GPU model, Windows edition and build, driver version/date, and the Code 43 text.
- Download the intended replacement driver before removing the current one from AMD’s live driver page.
- Create a restore point or verify that System Restore is available.
- Return GPU clocks, voltage, power limits, and fan settings to stock values.
- Temporarily close or uninstall tuning, overlay, RGB, fan-control, and hardware-monitoring utilities.
- Expect low resolution or a blank/flickering display while a driver is being removed.
Fix 1: Restart and roll back the AMD driver
Restart Windows rather than merely shutting down and powering on. A restart can clear a one-time driver crash, but persistent Code 43 needs further work.
If the error appeared immediately after an AMD or Windows driver update, try rollback first:
- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the AMD GPU and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver.
- Choose a reason, complete the process, and restart.
The button is unavailable when Windows has no previous package stored. If rollback succeeds, confirm that Device Manager says This device is working properly, test your displays and games, and keep that known-good driver rather than immediately reinstalling the newest release.

Fix 2: Reinstall AMD Software with Factory Reset
Use this when the existing package may be corrupted but Windows remains stable enough to run the installer.
- Download the exact package from AMD Support, or use AMD’s Auto-Detect and Install Tool.
- Close games and GPU utilities.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Choose Factory Reset if offered.
- Select Default/Full for the complete Adrenalin feature set, Minimal for fewer extras, or Driver Only when Adrenalin itself is part of the conflict.
- Restart, then check Device Manager again.
AMD describes Factory Reset as removing previous AMD Software package versions and temporarily pausing Windows Update during installation. Installer labels can change between releases; see AMD’s installation instructions. Factory Reset is convenient, but it is not identical to every possible driver-cleaning method.

Fix 3: Use AMD Cleanup Utility in Safe Mode
Use AMD’s first-party cleanup tool when a normal reinstall leaves Code 43, when downgrading, or when several driver packages have conflicted. AMD says the utility removes AMD graphics and audio drivers/software but does not modify AMD chipset drivers on AMD-powered systems: AMD Cleanup Utility.
- Download the utility and the replacement driver in advance.
- Temporarily disconnect the internet or disable Wi‑Fi so Windows Update does not install a different display driver during the process.
- Run
amdcleanuputility.exe. - Allow the requested reboot into Safe Mode.
- Let cleanup finish. The screen may flicker or go blank, and AMD says some runs can take 15–20 minutes.
- Allow the required reboot.
- Install the downloaded AMD or OEM driver.
- Reconnect the internet only after the intended driver is installed, then restart once more.
AMD says the utility creates a restore point before cleanup. After removal, Microsoft Basic Display Adapter and low resolution are normal temporary states. If cleanup fails, reboot and run it again in Safe Mode; use the restore point if the system becomes less functional. DDU is an optional third-party tool for advanced users, not a mandatory or AMD-endorsed step.

Fix 4: Install the driver intended for your computer
Desktop Radeon card
On AMD’s driver page, select Graphics → Radeon, then the exact product family, GPU model, Windows edition, and architecture. A driver for the same series is not necessarily the correct package for a particular card.
Laptop, mini-PC, or all-in-one
Try the computer manufacturer’s graphics driver first. OEM packages may be customized for hybrid graphics switching, display routing, power management, external monitors, hotkeys, and the built-in panel. AMD release notes advise laptop and all-in-one users to use OEM drivers for system-specific compatibility: AMD release notes.
- Install the laptop maker’s graphics driver.
- Install its matching chipset driver.
- Restart and test.
- Only then try AMD’s generic package if the OEM driver is unavailable or unsuitable.
Ryzen integrated Radeon graphics
On a Ryzen APU, the Radeon GPU is part of the processor. Do not apply discrete-card advice such as replacing PCIe power cables or reseating a removable card. Use the motherboard or laptop maker’s chipset and graphics packages when appropriate.
Older or legacy GPUs
Support varies by GPU generation and operating system. Do not hard-code a driver as “latest”; select a package on AMD’s live page and use an earlier known-good release when the newest one introduced the error.

Fix 5: Check whether Windows replaced the working driver
After installation, open Device Manager and verify the driver provider, version, and date. If the wrong package returns after reboot, Windows Update may have replaced it.
- Install the intended AMD or OEM driver.
- Restart and verify the package.
- If it changes, temporarily use the appropriate Windows policy or manufacturer-supported method to prevent driver replacement while testing.
- Do not permanently disable all Windows updates; this isolates a cause but does not repair it and abandons important security updates.
Fix 6: Check power, connections, firmware, and settings
Desktop physical checks
Shut down, switch off the PSU, unplug the computer, and discharge it before opening the case. Check that:
- The card is fully seated in the PCIe slot.
- Every required PCIe power connector is fully inserted, including both ends of modular PSU cables.
- The card is not sagging enough to affect the slot.
- There is no scorching, corrosion, liquid damage, or damaged connector.
- The monitor cable is connected to the graphics card, not the motherboard, when using a discrete GPU.
- The PSU meets the card manufacturer’s requirements.
- No unreliable riser, adapter, splitter, or extension is involved during diagnosis.
BIOS, chipset, and motherboard checks
- Load BIOS defaults if the error followed overclocking or firmware changes.
- Update motherboard BIOS only under the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Install the appropriate AMD or motherboard chipset driver.
- Check whether BIOS detects the GPU.
- Try another compatible PCIe slot.
- Review unusual PCIe, bifurcation, CSM, Above 4G Decoding, Resizable BAR, or PCIe-generation changes made after a BIOS update.
These are diagnostic branches, not universal fixes. BIOS updates carry risk, and VBIOS flashing should not be a routine Code 43 step.
Remove modified firmware and unstable tuning
Ask whether the card has a mining BIOS, cross-flashed VBIOS, unofficial driver patch, hardware modification, extreme undervolt, or overclock. Return it to factory configuration where possible. Do not use tools that bypass driver signatures or hardware checks as an ordinary fix; they can create security and update problems while hiding a genuine defect.
How to tell whether the GPU is failing
Cross-testing is the strongest practical discriminator:
| Test result | More likely explanation |
|---|---|
| Code 43 follows the GPU into a known-good computer | Card hardware, firmware, or power circuitry |
| Error stays with the original computer | Motherboard, PSU, BIOS, chipset, Windows, or system configuration |
| Card works in another computer | Original system’s power delivery, slot, firmware, or compatibility |
| Problem occurs only under load | PSU instability, overheating, tuning, memory errors, driver timeout, or failing hardware |
For a used card, verify its exact model and memory configuration, check for modified firmware or mining history, and use the seller or manufacturer warranty when available. A clean reinstall that fails to help does not alone identify the failed component.

Targeted branches for common situations
Code 43 appeared after an AMD update
- Roll back in Device Manager.
- If unavailable, install the previous known-good AMD or OEM package.
- Use AMD Cleanup Utility before downgrading if installation remains messy.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall the same package that triggered the failure.
AMD’s release notes recommend Cleanup Utility when downgrading and may identify a previous recommended driver: AMD release notes.
Code 43 appeared after a Windows update
Review Windows Update history, roll back the display driver, install the correct OEM or AMD package, and check whether Windows replaces it after reboot.

Evidence to collect before escalation
- GPU model and computer type
- Windows version/build and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Code 43 text and driver provider, version, and date
- AMD Software version, if it opens
- Whether the issue followed an update, crash, overclock, or BIOS change
- Whether the GPU appears in BIOS and whether its display outputs work
- PSU model and wattage on a desktop
- Whether Cleanup Utility and an earlier driver changed the result
- Whether the GPU works in another computer
Useful built-in checks include dxdiag, Device Manager → GPU → Properties → Details → Hardware Ids, Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System, and Reliability Monitor. AMD Bug Report Tool is useful when AMD Software can launch.

What not to do
- Do not download drivers or DLL files from random sites.
- Do not use “driver booster” applications as a normal remedy.
- Do not delete registry keys or replace system DLLs based on generic internet advice.
- Do not treat DDU as mandatory.
- Do not blind-flash a VBIOS or install an unofficial driver patch.
- Do not repeatedly install the same failed driver package.
- Do not replace the GPU until clean software testing, physical checks, and cross-testing point toward hardware.
When to contact support or seek a replacement
Contact the laptop maker for an OEM driver or firmware issue, AMD for supported software guidance, the graphics-card manufacturer for warranty or VBIOS procedures, and the seller for a used-card defect. Escalate when Code 43 remains after a clean removal, the correct OEM or AMD driver, stock settings, updates, power and PCIe checks, and cross-testing—or when the error follows the card to another known-good computer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Code 43 mean my AMD GPU is dead?
No. It means the driver reported a failure and Windows stopped the device. Hardware failure is only one possibility; establish it with clean driver testing, physical checks, and cross-testing.
Should I use DDU or AMD Cleanup Utility?
Use AMD Cleanup Utility first because it is AMD’s official graphics-driver cleanup tool. DDU is optional, third-party software for advanced users.
Should a laptop use AMD’s generic driver?
Try the laptop, mini-PC, or all-in-one manufacturer’s graphics and chipset drivers first. Generic AMD software can conflict with hybrid graphics, display routing, power management, or OEM features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan an insufficient PSU cause Code 43?
Yes. Power instability can cause driver failures, especially under load. Verify the PSU, PCIe connectors, and card seating before concluding that the GPU itself has failed.
Can I install an older AMD driver?
Yes, if it supports your exact GPU and Windows version. Roll back first, or use AMD Cleanup Utility before installing a previous known-good package.
Does Windows 10 still receive full support?
Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025. Check the exact AMD release and GPU requirements rather than assuming Windows 10 and Windows 11 have identical support.
