How to Fix Error Code 0x8007045D in Windows 7

Error 0x8007045D means Windows could not complete a read or write request because of an I/O device error. The code does not identify one failed part: the source disk, destination disk, USB connection, controller path, optical disc, or burner may be responsible. Protect important files first, isolate the failing path, run chkdsk /r on the involved volumes, and replace storage that reports bad sectors or repeated read errors.

The safest repair order is reversible testing before disk repair: secure readable data, identify the task that fails, check both source and destination, change one cable or port at a time, then use System File Checker only when Windows-file corruption is plausible.

What error 0x8007045D means

Microsoft Learn lists Win32 system error 1117, displayed as 0x45D, with the sentence “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” Windows commonly shows the HRESULT-style form 0x8007045D. It describes an unsuccessful input/output request: Windows asked a device to read or write data and the request did not complete.

That wording is deliberately broad. The code is not proof that the hard drive is dead, and it is not proof that Windows itself is corrupt. The failing component can be anywhere along the operation’s path:

  • the source volume that Windows is trying to read;
  • the destination volume that Windows is trying to write;
  • a USB socket, cable, hub, enclosure, or storage bridge;
  • a disk controller or its driver path;
  • a CD/DVD, optical drive, or burner;
  • filesystem damage or unreadable sectors on a disk.

The operation that triggered the message is your first diagnostic clue. A backup failure involves both the source and target disks; a DVD installation points toward the disc, optical drive, or installation media; and a copy that fails only through one USB socket points toward that connection path.

Protect data before trying repairs

If the operation involves a disk containing valuable files, treat every repeated read error as a warning. Copy the most important readable files to a different healthy destination before running repair operations. Do not leave the suspect disk as the only copy. If a file cannot be read, repeated retries may not make it readable, so prioritize files that still open and copy successfully.

For a backup job, distinguish the disk holding the original files from the disk intended to receive the backup. A new USB external hard drive can provide a replacement backup destination when the existing target is unreliable, but it cannot repair a failing source disk. If a disk check reports bad sectors or a growing number of errors, preserve what you can and plan to replace that disk rather than trusting it with another backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not begin by formatting, initializing, or deleting partitions on a disk that contains the only copy of your files. Those actions can remove the information you are trying to preserve. First copy accessible files, and keep the original device disconnected when it is not needed for a controlled test. If Windows repeatedly hangs while reading one folder, move on to other important folders instead of allowing one damaged area to block the entire backup.

Identify exactly where the operation fails

Write down the task, the drive letters or devices involved, and whether the error occurs at the same point each time. Use this map to choose the least destructive test first.

Failing task Likely paths to investigate First useful test
Windows Backup or system-image creation Source volume, destination volume, USB cable, port, enclosure Check both volumes and reconnect the external drive directly to another USB socket
Ordinary file copy Unreadable source file, destination disk, cable or port Copy a different small file and test the source and destination separately
Windows installation from DVD or USB Installation media, optical drive, USB media, connection Use known-good media and another port or drive where possible
CD/DVD burning Blank disc, burner, firmware, unsupported burn speed Try a different disc and a slower supported speed
Windows Update or another system task System volume, Windows files, storage controller path Check the system volume, then use SFC only if protected-file corruption is suspected

Disconnect nonessential external devices while testing. Reconnect the affected device directly to the computer rather than through a hub. Change one variable at a time so you know which change altered the result.

Note whether the failure happens while reading, writing, or verifying. A copy that always stops on the same source file suggests a source-read problem. A copy that reaches different points and then fails on the target suggests destination media or its connection. An installation that fails only with one disc points to media; an installation that fails with several known-good discs points more strongly to the optical drive or its connection.

Run CHKDSK with the repair-and-recovery option

Open an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Click Start, choose All Programs, then open Accessories.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt if it appears.

Use the drive letter for the volume involved. For example, to check drive E:, enter:

chkdsk /r E:

Replace E: with the actual source or destination letter. The /r option asks Windows to locate unreadable sectors and recover readable information while also checking the filesystem. Run it for each involved volume, not just the destination, because a backup can fail while reading the source.

Check the letters carefully in Windows Explorer before pressing Enter. Running a command against the wrong volume can waste time and complicate diagnosis. Close applications that may have files open on the volume, and allow the scan to complete rather than judging it from the first progress pause.

Schedule a check for the Windows system volume

If you check the volume containing Windows, CHKDSK may report that it cannot lock the drive and ask whether to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y, close open applications, and restart the computer. Allow the scan to finish; interrupting it can leave the filesystem in an uncertain state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the result conservatively

  • If CHKDSK reports filesystem corrections but no continuing read problems, retry the original operation once.
  • If it reports bad sectors, unreadable files, or an increasing number of errors, stop treating the disk as trustworthy. Copy readable data, create a replacement backup, and replace the disk.
  • If CHKDSK cannot complete, the volume repeatedly disconnects, or the same files remain unreadable, move from repair to data preservation and hardware replacement.

CHKDSK can repair filesystem metadata and mark sectors that Windows should avoid. It cannot make physically failing media reliable, and it cannot recover data that the device can no longer read. A successful scan is therefore not a permanent health certificate; it only tells you what Windows could check at that time.

Isolate USB and external-drive problems

Try another socket

Shut down the failed operation, disconnect the external drive safely, and reconnect it to a different USB socket. Avoid a hub during the test and remove other high-load USB devices temporarily. If the drive works from one socket but not another, the port or its connection path is suspect.

Test the cable or enclosure

Where the design permits, use a known-good compatible USB cable. For a removable drive mechanism, test another compatible enclosure or adapter. Do not force a connector or use a cable that does not match the drive’s power and data requirements.

Test on another computer

Connect the drive to another computer and perform a small read and write test using nonessential data. If the error follows the drive, suspect the drive or enclosure. If it occurs only on one computer or one socket, suspect that computer’s port, controller path, or connection. This comparison is a diagnostic inference, not a guarantee that every component has been cleared.

When a replacement external drive is needed, use it as a fresh backup destination after diagnosing the original source and target. Simply buying a new destination does not cure a source disk that cannot be read. Keep the new drive separate from the computer when it is not being used for backup so one device failure does not eliminate every copy.

Fix CD and DVD-specific failures

If 0x8007045D appears while reading or burning optical media, the disc, burner, media compatibility, or burn speed can be at fault. Microsoft support guidance identifies defective or incompatible discs, burner malfunction, and unsupported burn speeds as possible causes.

  1. Try a different blank or installation disc from a compatible type and a different batch or brand.
  2. Cleanly reconnect the optical drive and test whether it can read another known-good disc.
  3. Install firmware supplied by the drive manufacturer when the model and instructions specifically support it.
  4. When burning, select a slower speed that the drive and media support rather than the maximum advertised speed.
  5. Retry with a small, nonessential burn or a verified installation medium before committing important data.

If multiple known-good discs fail in the same drive, the burner or its connection is more likely than one defective disc. If only one disc fails while others work, replace that media. Do not assume that a disc that looks clean is readable; surface defects and compatibility problems may not be visible.

Use System File Checker only for Windows-file corruption

System File Checker (SFC) is intended for missing or corrupted protected Windows files, and Microsoft documents it for Windows 7. It is not a remedy for a bad hard disk, USB cable, USB socket, optical disc, or burner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start → All Programs → Accessories.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and approve the prompt.
  3. Run:
sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then read the final message. If SFC reports that it found and repaired protected files, restart Windows and retry the original task. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, record that result and continue investigating the storage or connection path; do not interpret an SFC result as proof that a physical device is healthy.

SFC is most relevant when several Windows components show corruption symptoms, not when one external disk fails during a copy. Running it after protecting data is sensible, but it should not delay replacing media that is producing bad-sector or repeated-read warnings.

Retry and verify the original operation

Retry only after the suspected path has been checked. For a file copy, open several copied files from the destination. For a backup or system image, use the backup program’s test-restore or restore-validation function when available and open a sample of restored files. For installation media, verify that setup proceeds past the point where the error previously occurred. A task that reports completion is not useful if the resulting files cannot be opened.

If the error returns, record what changed between attempts: the same file, the same sector range, one USB port, one disc, or one destination. Repeated failure at the same point strengthens the case for an unreadable source area or failing media. Failure that moves when you change a cable, port, or disc points toward that changed component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a short test log containing the device, port, cable, operation, and result. This prevents repeatedly performing the same risky test and makes it easier to decide whether a replacement solved the problem. Once a backup succeeds, open files from more than one folder and, where possible, perform a test restore instead of relying only on the program’s completion message.

Choose the next repair path by risk and reversibility

Option When it fits Data risk Reversibility and cost
Change USB socket or cable Error is limited to an external connection Low; no disk repair is performed Highly reversible and usually the least expensive test
Try another enclosure or computer The external drive may be fine but its bridge or host path is questionable Low when testing with nonessential writes Reversible; may require compatible hardware
Run chkdsk /r A volume has filesystem errors or unreadable sectors Higher if the disk is failing; preserve critical files first Software repair, but it cannot restore physically failing media
Replace the destination drive Backups fail because the target is unreliable Low for the source, provided the source remains readable Hardware cost; improves backup resilience, not the source disk
Replace the source disk Bad sectors or repeated read errors continue Necessary to protect remaining data Hardware cost and migration effort; the appropriate response to untrusted media
Run SFC Symptoms indicate protected Windows files may be corrupt Low to the disk, but irrelevant to a physical I/O fault Reversible software check

Start with the path that can be changed without altering data. Escalate to disk repair or replacement when the evidence points to the media itself. The cheapest option is not always the safest: replacing a cable is inexpensive, but delaying replacement of a disk with bad sectors can put the only readable copy at risk. Conversely, buying a new destination drive is worthwhile for backup resilience but does not remove the need to migrate away from a failing source.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Checking only the backup destination: a source disk can fail while Windows is reading it, so inspect both sides of the transfer.
  • Assuming the code names one component: 0x8007045D identifies a failed I/O request, not a guaranteed failed disk.
  • Continuing to retry a failing disk indefinitely: save readable files first and stop relying on media that reports bad sectors.
  • Using SFC as a hardware repair: SFC addresses protected Windows files, not cables, ports, discs, burners, or failing sectors.
  • Changing several things at once: isolate one port, cable, disc, or computer at a time so the result is meaningful.
  • Replacing only the destination: a new backup drive does not make a damaged source readable.
  • Skipping verification: inspect copied or restored files instead of trusting a completion message.
  • Interrupting a scheduled disk check: let CHKDSK finish after restarting the system volume.
  • Testing with irreplaceable data: use a small, nonessential read/write test when comparing computers, enclosures, or ports.

When replacement is the responsible fix

Replacement is justified when CHKDSK reports bad sectors or unreadable files, when errors recur across different cables and computers, or when the disk repeatedly disconnects during ordinary reads. Preserve readable data before retiring the device. A filesystem repair may allow temporary access, but it does not turn deteriorating media into dependable storage.

If the failure is confined to one USB socket, cable, enclosure, optical disc, or burn speed, replace that connection component or media instead of the disk. If failures occur across multiple known-good connections and tasks, treat the drive or optical device as the likely failing element. Compare the cost of a replacement cable or disc with the cost of replacement storage, but give priority to protecting data over extending the life of questionable media.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fix error code 0x8007045D in Windows 7?

Protect readable files first, identify whether the source, destination, USB path, or optical media is involved, then test another port or cable and run chkdsk /r on both affected volumes from an elevated Command Prompt. Replace storage that reports bad sectors or repeated unreadable files, and verify the backup or copy afterward.

Why does Windows say the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error?

Microsoft defines error 1117 (shown in this form as 0x8007045D) as an unsuccessful input/output request. Windows could not read from or write to a device. The message does not identify whether the source disk, destination disk, connection, controller path, optical disc, or burner caused the failure.

Why does my Windows 7 backup fail with 0x8007045D?

A backup reads the source and writes the destination, so either volume can be responsible. Check both with chkdsk /r, reconnect an external destination directly to another USB socket, and test a known-good cable or computer. A new external backup drive helps only when the destination is unreliable; it cannot fix a source disk that cannot be read.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I run CHKDSK on the source or the destination?

Run it on both volumes involved in the failed operation. A destination-only check can miss unreadable sectors on the source. If the Windows system volume is locked, schedule the check for the next restart by answering Y, then let it complete.

Does 0x8007045D mean my hard drive is dead?

No. It is an I/O failure code, not a diagnosis of one component. A bad cable, USB port, enclosure, optical disc, burner, controller path, filesystem, or disk can produce it. However, bad-sector reports, repeated read errors, disconnections, or failures across known-good connections mean the disk should no longer be trusted.

How can I fix 0x8007045D while installing Windows 7 from DVD or USB?

Use known-good installation media, try another USB socket or optical drive, and test another disc if the source is optical. For a DVD, a different compatible disc, supported slower burn speed, or manufacturer firmware may resolve media or burner problems. If several known-good media fail, investigate the drive or connection.

Will System File Checker repair error 0x8007045D?

Only when protected Windows files are actually missing or corrupt. Run sfc /scannow from an elevated prompt when system-file corruption is plausible. SFC cannot repair a failing disk, unreadable sector, USB cable, port, optical disc, or burner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is buying a new external hard drive the fix?

It is a sensible replacement backup destination when the current target is unreliable and the source remains readable. It is not a cure for a failing source disk. Copy data off a source that reports bad sectors, replace that source, and verify the new backup by opening files or performing a test restore.

The Bottom Line

Error 0x8007045D is a failed I/O request, not a single-part diagnosis. Save readable data, test the source and destination separately, change USB or optical components one at a time, run chkdsk /r on affected volumes, and use SFC only for suspected Windows-file corruption. Bad sectors or repeated read failures mean the disk should be replaced, while a new external drive should be treated as backup protection rather than a repair for the original source.
