Error 0xFFFFFDEF is not normally a generic Windows 10 or Windows 11 error. In Microsoft’s Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) and Exchange error catalog, it maps to JET_errLogDiskFull (also named IsamErrorLogDiskFull): “The log disk is full.” The correct fix is therefore to identify the application that reported it, find that application’s transaction-log volume, preserve recoverability, and then restore usable space through a supported procedure.
The same hexadecimal value can be passed through by application code, backup software, restore jobs, or another ESE-backed service. Treat the product name, version, event-log entry and log path as essential evidence before deleting anything or changing Windows settings.

What error 0xFFFFFDEF means
Microsoft’s MS-OXCDATA error table associates 0xFFFFFDEF with JET_errLogDiskFull and IsamErrorLogDiskFull. Its definition is “The log disk is full.” ESE uses transaction logs to record database changes before they are committed. When the volume that must receive those logs has no usable capacity, the database operation can stop, a service can fail to start, or a backup and restore task can abort.

An application can also expose the value in its own error message, so a solution that ignores the emitting product can make the situation worse.

Why the application context matters
- Microsoft Exchange: mailbox databases and their transaction logs have application-specific locations and recovery rules.
- Another ESE-backed service: the service may keep logs on a dedicated data or backup volume rather than on the Windows system drive.
- Backup or restore software: the job may be unable to create, replay or truncate logs even when a different volume still has free space.
- Custom application code: the program may display the numeric value while applying its own path, quota or permission rules.
Record the exact message, product name, product version, time of failure and the operation that was running. Those details determine which documentation and recovery workflow are safe.
First response: stop and protect recovery
Do not immediately delete files from a folder whose name suggests “logs.” Active transaction logs can be required to recover a database after a crash. Removing them outside the application’s supported backup, checkpoint or truncation process can leave the database unrecoverable even though it creates apparent free space.
Make a quick incident record
- Copy the complete error text, including any database, service or path name.
- Note whether the message appeared during normal service operation, a backup, a restore, an upgrade, a restart or a crash.
- Write down the affected product and its exact version or build.
- Avoid repeated retries if each retry may generate more logs or alter recovery state.
Confirm whether a supported backup exists
Before cleanup, verify that the application’s backup or log-truncation process completed successfully and that the backup is usable according to the product’s recovery procedure. A backup that merely exists as a file is not the same as a verified recovery point. If no supported backup is available, involve the administrator or vendor before removing transaction logs.

The Windows system drive is only one possibility. The log directory may be on a separate data disk, a mounted volume, a storage-area-network path or another location selected in the application’s configuration.
Use configuration and event evidence
- Open the affected application’s configuration or database-management console and locate its transaction-log directory.
- Review the application’s event log, service log and recent backup records for a path, volume name, quota message or failed truncation notice.
- In File Explorer, browse to that exact location, right-click the volume, choose Properties, and record the available space and capacity.
- Check every component involved. A database may be on one volume while its logs, temporary files or backup staging area are on another.
Free space shown for C: does not prove that the log volume has capacity. Conversely, a volume that appears to have space can still reject writes because of a quota, permissions, an unavailable mount point or a disconnected storage path.

Check the Windows side without changing the database
- In Settings > System > Storage, review capacity and large categories for the relevant local volume.
- Use File Explorer to confirm that the log path exists and that the service account can reach the volume.
- Open Event Viewer and inspect Windows Logs > Application plus the product’s own event channel around the failure time.
- Check whether a disk, mount point, network path or storage policy became unavailable after a restart.
Do not infer that a folder is safe to empty merely because its files have old dates. Transaction-log age is controlled by the application’s backup and checkpoint state, not by Windows Explorer’s sort order.
Restore space safely
Choose the least risky method that gives the application a writable log volume. The right choice depends on whether a verified backup exists, whether downtime is acceptable and whether the product supports relocating or extending its log storage.

Remove unrelated temporary data
If the volume is crowded by unrelated temporary files, old installers, crash dumps or other data that the owning application does not need, remove or move those items using the application’s retention policy and normal Windows storage tools. Do not touch active database logs, database files or backup chains unless the product explicitly authorizes that action.
Extend the volume
When the underlying storage supports expansion, increase the affected volume’s capacity through the storage platform and then confirm in Windows that the new space is available. Coordinate the change with the application owner; some environments require a maintenance window, a rescan or a service restart.
Move logs to a supported volume
Relocating transaction logs can solve a recurring capacity problem, but only when the application documents the procedure. It may require stopping a service, updating a database path, granting the service account access, moving files in a prescribed order and starting a recovery check. Never drag active logs to another drive in File Explorer and assume the database will discover them.

Run the application’s backup or truncation workflow
After resolving the storage or backup fault, run the product’s supported backup and log-management operation. Wait for it to report success, then verify that log growth has stopped and that the database or service can complete the previously failed operation. If truncation still fails, preserve the logs and escalate rather than repeating destructive cleanup.
Restart or retry only after the path is ready
Confirm that the log directory exists, the volume is mounted, the service account has write permission and sufficient capacity remains for new log files. Then restart the affected service or retry the backup operation according to its documented maintenance procedure. Record the result and recheck the event log for a new error rather than assuming that a successful restart proves recovery.
When the volume is not full
A “log disk is full” condition can be caused by something other than raw byte capacity. Investigate these branches in the application’s logs and operating-system events:
Quota or reservation limit
A user, directory or storage quota may be exhausted while the volume still reports free space. Ask the storage administrator to check quotas and any per-application reservation.
Permissions or service identity
The service may have lost write permission to the log directory after a security-policy change, migration or account update. Verify access using the service’s documented identity; do not grant broad permissions as a guess.

Unavailable path or mount
A drive letter, mount point, network share or storage target may be missing. Confirm that the path resolves at service start and that the application is configured for the current location.
Failed backup or log truncation
Logs can continue growing when the backup system cannot complete or acknowledge a backup. Inspect the backup job’s own error and completion records, then use the application’s supported recovery process.
Database recovery or consistency issue
If space, access and backup status are normal, the database may be in recovery or may require a vendor-specific consistency procedure. Stop making manual file changes and use the product’s recovery documentation or qualified support.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 upgrade guidance recommends disconnecting nonessential external hardware, checking the relevant upgrade-error table and contacting Microsoft support if the failure continues. However, 0xFFFFFDEF is not listed in that generic Windows upgrade table and is explicitly defined in the Exchange/ESE catalog. That mismatch means the first task is to identify which setup component emitted the code.
Safe setup investigation
- Unplug nonessential USB devices, external drives, docks and other hardware, leaving only equipment required for the upgrade.
- Write down the setup phase and the complete message, including any application or service name.
- Capture the Windows setup logs from the failed attempt and search for the hexadecimal value alongside a product, database or path.
- Check the suspected application’s log volume, backup state and permissions before retrying setup.
- If logs point only to Windows setup and no ESE-backed component, follow Microsoft’s upgrade troubleshooting path and seek support with the captured logs.
Do not format a volume or delete an Exchange or ESE log directory just because the error appeared in a Windows setup screen. The setup interface may be displaying a code returned by another component.
When 0xFFFFFDEF accompanies crashes or restarts
Unexpected restarts and stop-code failures can involve hardware, drivers or software. In that situation, use Windows’ general troubleshooting sequence while continuing to identify the application that displayed 0xFFFFFDEF.
Stabilize the system
- Remove hardware added immediately before the failures, then test whether the restart pattern changes.
- Start Windows in Safe Mode to determine whether a nonessential driver or startup service is involved.
- Open Device Manager and inspect devices with warning icons; review driver changes and install current drivers from the hardware or system vendor.
- Check that the Windows system volume and the application’s log volume both have adequate free space.
- Install pending Windows updates after confirming that the update process is not the component generating the ESE code.
- If instability persists, use System Restore or another available Windows recovery option, provided the recovery point and its impact are understood.
These steps address system stability; they do not replace the application’s transaction-log recovery procedure. A stable desktop can still leave a database unable to write logs.
Choose a remediation by risk and downtime

The safest first choice is the option that restores headroom without altering active transaction logs. If a verified backup does not exist, prioritize preservation and specialist guidance over speed.

What not to do
- Do not assume the error means the Windows system drive is full.
- Do not run a purported universal “0xFFFFFDEF repair” command; no Windows 10/11 command is established as a universal fix for this code.
- Do not delete, rename or move active transaction logs manually.
- Do not repeatedly restart a failing database or backup job without checking whether each attempt grows the log set.
- Do not treat the numeric code alone as proof of malware, a bad driver or a Windows Update defect.
Information to collect before escalation
Provide the application owner or support team with the exact hexadecimal code, product and version, Windows edition and build, affected database or service, log-directory path, free space on that volume, quota status, backup and truncation results, relevant Event Viewer entries, setup or crash logs and the time sequence of the failure. State whether any files were moved or deleted. This lets support distinguish capacity, access, path, backup and recovery problems without risking additional data loss.
