Stop editing that section immediately. If OneNote displays a repair option, let it try, but treat the result as uncertain. Preserve any readable copy before moving, deleting, or repeatedly synchronizing the section, then update Windows and Microsoft 365 and restart OneNote. If the section still cannot sync, compare it with a known-good notebook copy or contact Microsoft Support.
What error 0xE00001B4 means
The message associated with this code is: “This OneNote section file appears to be corrupted. OneNote may be able to repair the file. Avoid adding content to this corrupted section. (Error code: 0xE00001B4).” A Microsoft Q&A record posted on October 11, 2012 identifies it as a OneNote section-file corruption and synchronization problem.

A OneNote notebook is divided into sections. The error concerns one section file, not necessarily the entire notebook or Windows itself. You may see the warning when OneNote is trying to synchronize, when a section refuses to open, or when changes remain stuck. The code does not identify a universal hardware fault, malware infection, or a Windows component that can be repaired with one command.

Do this first: stop changing the damaged section
- Stop typing, pasting, deleting, or rearranging pages in the flagged section. Microsoft’s message specifically warns against adding content while the section is marked corrupted.
- Do not repeatedly force synchronization. Give OneNote a chance to display its own repair prompt instead of creating more edits while the file is in an uncertain state.
- Leave the notebook open long enough to see whether OneNote offers repair. If a repair action appears, use that built-in option and wait for it to finish.
- Record what is affected. Note the notebook name, section name, device on which the warning appeared, and whether other sections continue to synchronize. This information is useful if you need support.
These precautions protect the readable material you may still have. They do not guarantee recovery; corruption can leave some pages or recent edits unavailable.

Let OneNote attempt its built-in repair
OneNote may be able to repair the section, but “may” is important: Microsoft does not promise that every damaged section can be reconstructed. If the application presents a repair button or dialog, accept the repair and allow it to complete without closing OneNote or shutting down Windows.
After the attempt, check the section carefully. Look for the pages you expected, recent edits, attachments, and the synchronization status. A section that opens is not automatically identical to the version you had before the warning, so preserve the readable result before experimenting further.
If no repair option appears, do not download an unknown “OneNote repair” utility or apply registry edits found in an unauthorised guide. The exact code has no cited, universal command that fixes every instance.

Before deleting, moving, or repeatedly resynchronizing the affected section, make a copy of material that remains accessible. The safest method depends on what your OneNote edition allows and where the section opens.

If the section opens on the same computer
- Copy important page content into a new, uncorrupted section or another notebook. Work from the readable pages and avoid making further edits in the flagged section.
- If your OneNote edition provides an export command, export the readable pages or section to a location you control. Keep the original as well; an export is a fallback copy, not proof that synchronization has been repaired.
- Save critical text and attachments separately when practical. This gives you a usable record if the section later stops opening.
If the section opens on another device
Open the same notebook on a device that still has a readable copy, and copy or export the needed pages there. Do not assume that the copy on another device contains every recent change; compare dates and page content before treating it as complete.
If only some pages are readable
Preserve the readable pages individually. Make a note of pages that are missing or display errors so you can distinguish recovered material from content that will need to be recreated from another copy.
Update Windows, update Microsoft 365, then restart OneNote
Updates are a sensible maintenance step when synchronization problems occur, although updating does not prove that the corrupted section data has been repaired.

Install Windows updates
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install the updates offered for your system.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not immediately require a restart.
- Open OneNote and check the affected notebook once. Avoid editing the section until you know whether it opens and synchronizes.
If Windows Update itself fails, use the Windows Update troubleshooter available in your Windows settings and follow the repair steps it reports. A failed Windows update is a separate problem from the damaged OneNote section; fixing the update process may improve system reliability but cannot guarantee restoration of notebook data.

Update Microsoft 365 or Office, when OneNote came with it
If your OneNote installation is part of Microsoft 365 or Office, open another Office application and use its account or product-information screen to check for updates. The exact labels can differ by Office edition; use the product’s built-in update command, install available updates, restart Windows, and then reopen OneNote. If you use a standalone OneNote installation, update it through the installation channel that supplied it.
Choose the next step based on the scope of the failure

Windows checks when the corruption appears with a wider system problem
Microsoft’s general Windows troubleshooting guidance is relevant when OneNote corruption appears alongside repeated crashes, a failed update, or a recent hardware change. These checks address the surrounding Windows problem; none is a guaranteed repair for the OneNote section itself.
Remove newly added hardware temporarily
Disconnect nonessential external devices that were added shortly before the problem, such as docks, storage devices, or peripherals. Leave only the equipment needed to start Windows and test OneNote. If the error disappears, reconnect devices one at a time to identify whether a change coincided with the instability.

Start Windows in Safe Mode using the recovery options available in your edition. Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. If Windows is stable there but not during a normal start, the surrounding issue may involve a recently installed driver, service, or startup program. Safe Mode does not repair a corrupted OneNote section, so return to a normal startup before testing OneNote’s synchronization behavior.

Check Device Manager after a hardware change
Open Device Manager and look for devices showing warnings, especially hardware installed or updated just before the issue. Use the device’s supported driver recovery or update options and restart Windows when prompted. Do not remove an unknown device or install a driver from an untrusted source merely because OneNote reported 0xE00001B4.
Confirm that the system drive has free space
Check available space on the drive where Windows and OneNote store their working data. Free space is a prerequisite for updates and normal application operation. If the drive is nearly full, remove files using Windows’ own storage tools or move personal files safely, then restart and test again. Clearing space does not reconstruct a damaged section.
Use System Restore only when it fits the timeline
If the broader Windows failure began after a software, driver, or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists, System Restore may return system files and settings to an earlier state. It is not a notebook-history tool and should not be treated as a guaranteed way to recover OneNote pages. Preserve any readable notebook content first and review what System Restore changes before confirming it.

If Windows installation or upgrade errors are also present
When 0xE00001B4 appears during a period of Windows installation or upgrade trouble, follow Microsoft’s general installation-error guidance. Unplug nonessential external hardware, restart, and retry the supported Windows troubleshooting steps for your version. Keep the OneNote recovery work separate: a successful Windows upgrade may improve system operation, but it does not establish that the section file has been repaired.
What not to do
- Do not keep adding content to the section while OneNote labels it corrupted.
- Do not delete the section first. Deletion can remove a readable source you might have copied or exported.
- Do not rely on random registry edits, disk cleaners, or “repair” downloads. There is no cited universal fix for this exact code, and an untrusted tool can make recovery harder.
- Do not assume an update equals recovery. Windows and Microsoft 365 updates are maintenance steps, not confirmation that notebook data has been reconstructed.
- Do not overwrite every available copy. Keep the original notebook and any readable export until you have verified the replacement content.
When to escalate to Microsoft Support
Escalate when the built-in repair does not restore the section, the error returns after restarting and updating, or no device has a complete readable copy. Provide the exact code, the full warning text, the notebook and section names, the Windows version, the OneNote installation type, and the steps that preceded the failure. State whether other sections synchronize and whether you have a readable copy elsewhere.
If support recommends restoring an older notebook copy, decide what recent edits you can accept losing. Keep the damaged original and your exports until the restored notebook has been checked page by page. If the section contains business, legal, academic, or otherwise irreplaceable records, avoid further experimentation and involve the person responsible for your organisation’s data recovery process.
How likely is OneNote to repair it?
OneNote’s wording is deliberately conditional: it may be able to repair the file. The historical Microsoft Q&A record confirms the meaning of the code and the instruction to stop adding content, but it does not publish a success rate or a current Windows-build repair matrix. Outcomes therefore depend on what part of the section remains readable and whether another synchronized copy exists. There is no evidence-based percentage or universal command that can be promised for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
