Error 0xC00002EE means Windows deleted a security context before authentication finished. Microsoft defines it as STATUS_UNFINISHED_CONTEXT_DELETED: “A security context was deleted before the context was completed. This is considered a logon failure.” It is an authentication status, not a diagnosis of one broken file or component.
The right fix depends on where it appears. A failure while opening a shared folder, connecting a service, or recording Security Event 4625 usually calls for network, domain, credential, clock, or protocol checks. A message that prevents Windows from starting requires Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), Startup Repair, rollback tools, and only then command-line repair. Follow the branch that matches your symptom before considering a reset or reinstall.

What 0xC00002EE means
The status describes an authentication handshake that ended before its security context was completed. Windows therefore records a logon failure, but the code does not identify whether the interruption came from credentials, a domain controller, Kerberos or NTLM negotiation, connectivity, a service account, or damaged startup components.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Microsoft’s definition is intentionally broad. Treat the code as a clue about an interrupted authentication process, not as proof that Windows is infected, that the bootloader is damaged, or that one particular DLL must be replaced.

Why the location of the error matters
- At the Windows sign-in screen: determine whether another account or sign-in method works and whether the machine is joined to a work or school domain.
- When opening a shared folder, printer, or other network resource: investigate SMB sessions, DNS, domain-controller reachability, account passwords, and authentication protocols.
- In Security Event Log, Event 4625: record the Logon Type, account, source computer, and status details. A documented example shows 0xC00002EE with Logon Type 3, which is a network-logon context.
- Before the desktop appears or during startup: use WinRE and startup-repair procedures. Do not assume a network-logon example explains a boot failure.
First, capture the context instead of guessing
Write down the exact message, when it appears, and what action immediately preceded it. This prevents a destructive fix for the wrong problem.
Check Event Viewer when Windows reaches the desktop
- Press
Win+R, entereventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Open Windows Logs → Security.
- Filter or search for Event ID 4625.
- Record the failed account, Logon Type, source computer or network address, authentication package, and status/substatus values.
Do not post usernames, network addresses, or domain names publicly. The record tells you whether to follow the local-startup path or the network/domain path below.
Establish whether this is local or domain authentication
- Try a known-good local account if one exists. A successful local sign-in with a failed domain account points toward domain connectivity, credentials, or policy.
- If the computer is domain joined, note whether it is on the organization’s network or VPN. A machine that cannot contact a domain controller can reject otherwise correct domain credentials.
- For a service or scheduled task, identify the account assigned to that service and when its password last changed.
Quick, low-risk checks
Restart and retry the exact action
Choose Start → Power → Restart, not Shut down followed by an immediate power-on. A restart clears transient authentication state and closes abandoned network sessions. After Windows loads, retry the same share, service, or sign-in method and note whether the failure is repeatable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTry another sign-in method
If the sign-in screen offers a PIN, password, security key, or another account, test an alternative you know is valid. This is a diagnostic step, not a replacement for correcting a failed account or domain relationship. If every account fails and Windows never reaches the desktop, move to WinRE.
Verify simple account conditions
- Check Caps Lock and the keyboard layout at the sign-in screen.
- For a network or service account, confirm that the password has not expired, been changed elsewhere, or been locked out.
- Reconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet before a domain sign-in. If a VPN is required to reach the domain, establish it using the organization’s approved method.
When Windows will not start: enter Windows Recovery Environment
WinRE is Microsoft’s recovery workspace for a system that cannot boot normally. Repeated failed starts can launch Automatic Repair automatically. You can also force WinRE by interrupting startup twice: turn the PC on, and when the Windows logo appears, hold the power button until it shuts down; repeat once, then allow the third start to continue. Another route is Windows installation media: boot from the USB drive and select Repair my PC rather than installing.
Have the BitLocker recovery key available. An encrypted drive may require that key before WinRE can access recovery tools or data. If you do not have it, use the account or organization process that stores your recovery keys before changing partitions or reinstalling.
Use the WinRE menus
- Choose Troubleshoot.
- Open Advanced options.
- Start with the least destructive option that matches the timing of the problem.
Run Startup Repair first for a boot failure
In WinRE select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Repair. The tool checks common startup problems, including damaged system files and boot-configuration errors, and attempts an automated repair. Let it complete without powering off the computer.
Startup Repair is aimed at getting Windows to boot; it does not repair an expired password, a failed domain controller, or a broken SMB connection. If Windows still will not start, WinRE may save diagnostics in %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. The Windows volume letter in that path can differ inside WinRE.
Roll back a recent change before using destructive recovery
System Restore
If the problem began after a driver, application, policy, or system change, choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore. Select a restore point dated before the failure. System Restore normally rolls back system files, drivers, and registry settings without deleting personal documents, but applications or updates installed after that point may be removed.
Uninstall a recent Windows update
From Troubleshoot → Advanced options, choose Uninstall Updates. Start with the most recent quality update if the timing is clear; use feature-update removal only when the issue began immediately after a feature upgrade and Windows offers that option. Keep the computer connected to power while the rollback runs.
These rollback choices are reversible compared with resetting the installation. If neither is available or they do not change the symptom, continue with command-line checks.
Repair system files from WinRE Command Prompt
Use Command Prompt when Startup Repair and rollback do not resolve a startup failure, or when diagnostics indicate file or boot corruption. Commands run in WinRE, so Windows may not be on C:. Using the wrong volume can repair the recovery environment instead of the installed system.
Identify the Windows volume
- In Advanced options, open Command Prompt.
- Enter
diskpart, thenlist volume. - Identify the volume containing the
Windowsfolder. You can leave DiskPart withexit, then test letters such asC:andD:usingdir C:Windowsuntil the installed copy is found.
In the examples below, replace C: with the actual Windows volume.
Run offline System File Checker
Enter:
SFC /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=C: /OFFWINDIR=C:Windows
Wait for verification to reach 100 percent. The result may say that Windows Resource Protection found and repaired files, found files but could not repair all of them, or found no integrity violations. Record the exact result before closing the window.
Use DISM if the component store needs repair
For an offline image, run:
DISM /IMAGE:C: /CLEANUP-IMAGE /RESTOREHEALTH
DISM can take a long time and may appear paused at one percentage. Do not interrupt it solely because progress is slow. When it finishes, run the offline SFC command again so repaired components can be applied.

Microsoft’s boot troubleshooting includes these commands:
BOOTREC /FIXMBR
BOOTREC /FIXBOOT
Use them for a boot-configuration or boot-record problem, not as a generic response to a network authentication failure. If the boot files themselves must be recreated, identify the system and Windows partitions carefully and use the appropriate BCD repair procedure for that layout. A mistaken partition selection can make the installation less bootable, so stop if the volumes are unclear and use Startup Repair or professional support instead.

If the desktop loads and 0xC00002EE appears when accessing a network resource or in Event 4625 with Logon Type 3, concentrate on the authentication path rather than boot files.
Confirm name resolution and domain-controller reachability
- Open Settings → Network & internet and verify that the intended Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection is active.
- At an elevated Command Prompt, test the server name with
nslookup servername. An incorrect or unreachable DNS response can prevent the client from finding the share host or domain controller. - For domain-joined PCs, test the organization’s approved VPN or network route. A successful internet connection alone does not prove that the domain controller is reachable.
Coordinate DNS changes with the administrator. Do not replace organizational DNS settings with a public resolver merely to make one lookup succeed; domain service records may then be unavailable.

Check credentials and service accounts
- Sign out of the affected account and sign in again after confirming the current password.
- For a Windows service, open Services, inspect the service’s Log On account, and update it only through the organization’s credential process. A password changed in Active Directory but not in the service configuration will cause repeated failures.
- Check for account lockout, expiration, or a disabled account with the administrator responsible for the domain.
Clear stale SMB sessions
Old connections can retain incorrect credentials. In Command Prompt, review sessions with net use. If appropriate, close them with:
net use * /delete
Confirm the prompt and reconnect to the share using the intended account. This disconnects mapped and remembered network connections, so save work and warn other users on a shared workstation first.
Check time synchronization and authentication protocols
Kerberos is sensitive to clock differences. Verify the PC’s date, time, time zone, and synchronization source under Settings → Time & language → Date & time. Domain administrators should also verify that clients and domain controllers synchronize to the approved hierarchy.
Do not disable Kerberos, NTLM protections, firewall controls, or endpoint-security features as a first reaction. Authentication can fail when a policy or security product blocks a protocol, but changing those controls reduces protection. Have an administrator review policy, firewall, and endpoint-security logs and test a narrowly scoped, temporary exception only under the organization’s change process.
Use Event 4625 details to choose the next test
| Observed context | Most useful checks | Avoid first |
|---|---|---|
| Logon Type 3 while opening a share | DNS, route to the server, SMB sessions, account password, domain-controller access, and clock | Bootrec commands or reinstalling Windows |
| Service or scheduled task account | Stored password, account lockout/expiration, service logon settings, and policy changes | Deleting system files |
| Domain sign-in fails but local sign-in works | VPN or LAN access to a domain controller, DNS records, time synchronization, and domain account status | Resetting the whole PC |
| No desktop; repeated startup failure | WinRE, Startup Repair, System Restore, update removal, then offline SFC/DISM | Assuming the code proves a network fault |
The code does not establish which row applies. Use the event’s account, source, and Logon Type to select the narrowest test.
When to reset or reinstall Windows
Reset this PC or a clean reinstall is a last resort after you have backed up accessible files and recorded any BitLocker recovery information. In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot → Reset this PC and read each option carefully. A reset can remove applications and settings; a clean reinstall from Windows installation media can remove apps, settings, and data on the targeted installation.
Use installation media when the installed recovery environment cannot start or is missing. Boot from the USB drive, select Repair my PC to reach WinRE, and reserve Install now for a deliberate reinstall. Confirm the Windows edition and target disk before deleting partitions.
What not to conclude from 0xC00002EE
- It is not a universal diagnosis of bootloader corruption.
- It does not by itself prove malware or require antivirus removal.
- It does not identify one DLL, registry key, or Windows component as the cause.
- It does not justify disabling security protocols or deleting credentials without first checking the event context.
Keeping those limits in mind prevents an unnecessary reinstall for a password or DNS problem, and prevents repeated network troubleshooting when Windows actually cannot boot.
