Error 0xC00000B5 means Windows timed out waiting for an input/output operation to finish. It is mapped to STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT, with Microsoft’s wording: “The specified I/O operation on %hs was not completed before the time-out period expired.” The code is a symptom, not a diagnosis of one failed component. It can involve a system drive, another storage device, a controller, cable, port, removable media, or a driver. Protect important data first, then isolate external hardware, test in Safe Mode, inspect the storage path, update Windows and drivers, and use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) if the computer will not start.
What error 0xC00000B5 means
Windows issues this status when a requested read or write does not complete within the allowed time. Microsoft’s NTSTATUS reference identifies 0xC00000B5 as STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT; the same mapping appears in Microsoft’s SMB protocol documentation. The status does not identify whether the delay came from a disk, controller, connection, removable device, or software driver.

You may see the code in a blue-screen message, in boot diagnostics, or as a parameter in an UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME stop error. In that boot scenario, Windows was unable to finish a storage read while trying to mount the volume. The code alone still does not prove that the hard drive or SSD has failed.

Treat the error as a possible data-access problem rather than as proof of a dead drive. A loose cable, failing USB enclosure, bad port, unstable dock, corrupted driver, or temporarily unresponsive storage device can all produce a timeout. Repeated timeouts, a drive that disappears from Windows, SMART warnings from the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility, clicking or grinding sounds, or files that can no longer be read make a physical storage-path failure more likely.

If the disk is intermittently visible, copy irreplaceable files to another disk or create an image before running repeated repairs. Microsoft warns that some recovery choices can cause data loss, so do not postpone the backup decision until after reset or reinstall steps.
Follow these fixes in order
1. Disconnect new and nonessential hardware
- Shut down the PC completely.
- Unplug newly installed internal or external hardware if you can do so safely. Disconnect USB flash drives, external disks, card readers, docks, printers and other nonessential peripherals.
- Leave only the keyboard, mouse and display connected, then start Windows again.
Microsoft lists removing newly added hardware and nonessential external hardware as an initial stop-error step. If the timeout disappears, reconnect devices one at a time and restart between tests. The device or connection that brings the error back is the first item to investigate; do not assume the device itself is defective until its cable, port and driver have also been checked.
2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers. It is useful for separating a Windows software or driver problem from a storage or device problem.
- Open Settings, choose System, then Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now. If Windows cannot reach the desktop, enter WinRE using the recovery steps described below.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the restart, choose Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking only if you need network access.
In Safe Mode, open Device Manager and look for warning icons. For the suspect storage, chipset, USB or other device, use the appropriate action: update the driver, roll it back if the problem began immediately after an update, disable it temporarily for testing, or uninstall it so Windows can detect it again after a restart. Make one change at a time and record what you changed.

3. Check the complete storage path
A timeout can occur anywhere between Windows and the media. On a desktop, with the computer powered off and only if you are comfortable working inside it, reseat the drive’s data and power connections. Try a known-good cable and another motherboard port. For a USB drive, test a different cable and a direct port rather than a hub or dock. Remove failing memory cards or USB media before booting.
Run the drive maker’s health or diagnostic utility and save any reported SMART warning or test result. Such a test is evidence about that device, not a guarantee that every part of the storage path is healthy. If the utility cannot see the drive, Windows also loses sight of it, or the drive repeatedly times out, stop unnecessary writes and move to the escalation guidance below.
4. Install Windows and device updates
When Windows still starts reliably, install pending updates from Settings > Windows Update. Microsoft recommends checking for the latest Windows updates and using Windows Update troubleshooting when updates fail.
For an upgrade or installation failure, Microsoft also lists these measures:

- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Use an elevated Command Prompt or Terminal to run
sfc /scannow. - Perform a clean boot to prevent nonessential startup software from interfering.
- Check that the Windows Update services are running.
- Reset Windows Update components using Microsoft’s documented procedure.
Restart after each major change and check whether the timeout returns. If the computer is unstable during updates, back up first and avoid interrupting a firmware or Windows installation.
5. Check free space and system-file integrity
Windows needs working room for temporary files, updates and recovery operations. Microsoft advises keeping roughly 10–15% of the system drive free. Check available space in File Explorer > This PC. If the drive is nearly full, remove or move files you have already backed up and empty temporary locations using Windows’ storage settings.
From an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Allow the scan to finish and follow its reported result. If the drive is making unusual noises, disappearing, or failing the manufacturer’s diagnostic, stop repair commands and prioritize an image or professional recovery instead; additional writes can reduce the chance of recovering data.
6. Use WinRE when Windows will not boot
Windows Recovery Environment provides repair tools without requiring a normal desktop session. If Windows repeatedly fails to start, it may enter WinRE automatically. You can also start it from Windows installation media or from Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now when the desktop is available.

In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options. Use the least disruptive option that matches the timing of the failure:
- Startup Repair: lets Windows attempt to correct startup files and configuration problems.
- Uninstall Updates: remove a recently installed quality or feature update if the timeout began immediately afterward.
- System Restore: return system files and settings to an available restore point without deliberately selecting a full reinstall.
- Point-in-time restore: use an available restore image or recovery point when your edition and setup provide one.
- Reset this PC: use only after you understand which reset choice is offered and have made the necessary backup decisions.
- Reinstall Windows: reserve this for cases where repair and restore options fail. Microsoft warns that reinstalling from installation media can remove everything.
If WinRE cannot see the Windows volume, that is an important diagnostic clue: the storage device, controller, connection or its driver may not be completing requests. Recheck the physical path and the manufacturer’s diagnostics before repeatedly selecting reset or reinstall.
Which recovery option should you choose?
| Option | When it fits | Personal-file risk | Extra equipment | Disruption |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Remove peripherals and test | The error followed new hardware or appears only with an external device | Normally none, but back up first if the drive is unstable | None | Low |
| Safe Mode and Device Manager | Windows starts, or you suspect a driver or startup software conflict | Normally none | None | Low |
| Windows Update and integrity checks | The system is usable and the issue may be software-related | Normally none; protect data before repair work | None | Low to moderate |
| Startup Repair or update removal in WinRE | Windows will not boot after a startup change or recent update | Microsoft warns recovery options can cause data loss | None if WinRE is present | Moderate |
| System Restore or another available restore point | A restore point or image predates the failure | Personal files are not the intended target, but review the recovery screen carefully | None if recovery data exists | Moderate |
| Reset this PC | Earlier repairs and restore choices did not recover a usable installation | Depends on the selected reset path; make a backup decision first | None | High |
| Reinstall from installation media | Windows remains unrepairable or the installation is badly damaged | Microsoft says reinstalling from media can remove everything | Another working PC and a USB flash drive to create media | Highest |
Microsoft’s recovery guidance moves from troubleshooters and update removal toward reset or reinstall as the disruption increases. The table is a decision aid, not a promise that any option will repair a hardware timeout.

If the affected PC cannot boot and WinRE tools are unavailable or unsuccessful, use another working computer to create bootable Windows installation media on a USB flash drive. Start the affected PC from that media, select the appropriate Windows setup or repair option, and make the backup and data-loss decisions before choosing a reinstall.

Installation media can give you access to recovery tools and a clean installation path, but it cannot repair a defective cable, controller or drive. If the installer cannot read the target disk, return to storage-path testing rather than repeatedly formatting it.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek help
Escalate to a qualified repair or data-recovery service when any of these conditions apply:
- The drive repeatedly disappears or times out.
- The manufacturer’s diagnostic reports SMART warnings or a failed test.
- You hear clicking, grinding or repeated spin-up sounds.
- Important files cannot be opened or copied.
- WinRE and installation media cannot consistently detect the disk.
- The error returns after a known-good cable, port and peripheral test.
Until the data is safe, avoid formatting, resetting, reinstalling, or running repeated write-heavy repairs. A professional can choose imaging or recovery methods appropriate to the failure. The presence of 0xC00000B5 by itself is not a published Microsoft threshold for declaring a drive dead; the escalation decision comes from the surrounding symptoms and test results.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What Microsoft does—and does not—say about this code
Microsoft documents the status meaning and general Windows, boot and storage troubleshooting, but it does not publish one dedicated Windows 10 or Windows 11 fix for 0xC00000B5. There is no authoritative statistic showing how often this exact code indicates a failed drive. Use the code to identify a timeout, then use the sequence above to determine whether the cause is removable hardware, a driver, Windows components, or a deteriorating storage path.
As an optional shortcut for the driver side of this problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, create driver backups and restore points, and schedule scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 with a two-day free trial and no credit card, followed by a subscription; results vary and no tool repairs every timeout.
The Bottom Line
0xC00000B5 is an I/O timeout, not a verdict that your hard drive has failed. Back up data, disconnect peripherals, test in Safe Mode, inspect cables and ports, update Windows and drivers, and use WinRE or installation media only after weighing disruption and data loss. Persistent timeouts, SMART warnings, disappearing drives or clicking noises warrant professional help.
