Error 0xC000006E means Windows accepted the supplied user name and authentication information but blocked the sign-in because an account restriction applies. It is the NTSTATUS value STATUS_ACCOUNT_RESTRICTION, not the usual wrong-password result. The fastest way to find the actual cause is to inspect the failed-logon record in Event Viewer, especially its Sub Status value. That value tells you whether the account is outside permitted hours, limited to another workstation, disabled, expired, missing a logon right, or affected by another policy condition.
The repair path depends on whether you are signing in with a domain account or a local account, what Logon Type appears in Event ID 4625, and whether the computer can contact a domain controller. Work through the evidence before changing passwords, registry settings, or security software.

What error 0xC000006E means
Windows reports 0xC000006E when the identity information is valid but an account restriction prevents authentication. In practical terms, the password may have been accepted, yet Windows still refuses the requested logon because the account state, policy, workstation, schedule, or logon right does not permit that action.

Do not treat the parent code as a complete diagnosis. The useful detail is in the failed-logon event’s Sub Status, together with the logon type, account, process, workstation, and source address.
Start with Event ID 4625
Before changing an account or policy, capture the complete failed-logon event. It shows which identity Windows evaluated and which kind of logon was rejected.
- Sign in with another administrator account, if necessary.
- Open Event Viewer. You can search for it from the Start menu.
- Go to Windows Logs → Security.
- Filter or scan for Event ID 4625, the failed-logon event.
- Open the event generated at the time of the failure and record the account name, domain, Sub Status, Logon Type, process name, workstation name, and source-network address.
Event 4625 is an audit record. One isolated event does not prove malware or an intrusion. A process name, source address, and repetition pattern can instead point to a service with an old password, a scheduled task, Explorer reconnecting to a share, or another computer repeatedly trying to authenticate.

Use the hexadecimal value shown as Failure Information → Status or Sub Status in the event. The following Microsoft-documented examples are common reasons for a 0xC000006E parent status:
| Sub Status | What it indicates | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
0xC000006F |
Logon occurred outside the account’s authorized hours. | Allowed logon hours in the account policy and the computer’s local time. |
0xC0000070 |
The account attempted to log on from an unauthorized workstation. | The account’s Log On To workstation restriction and the workstation named in Event 4625. |
0xC0000072 |
The account is disabled. | Account status in Active Directory or Local Users and Groups. |
0xC0000071 |
The password has expired. | Password-expiration state and the organization’s password policy. |
0xC000015B |
The user lacks the requested logon right on that computer. | Allow and Deny user-right assignments for the displayed logon type. |
0xC0000193 |
The account has expired. | Account expiration date in the directory. |
If the event shows a different substatus, use that value as the lead rather than assuming the password is wrong. The parent 0xC000006E code only establishes that a restriction blocked otherwise valid authentication.
Use Logon Type to identify the operation
The Logon Type narrows the search. An interactive sign-in, Remote Desktop session, network connection, service, and scheduled task can each be controlled by different user rights. For example, a user may be allowed to sign in at the keyboard but denied Remote Desktop, or a background service may continue trying an old credential even though the person can log on normally.

Fixes for a domain account
Use this section when the sign-in name includes a domain, the computer is joined to an organization, or Event 4625 identifies a domain account. Make the change that matches the substatus; broad policy changes can create new security problems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems1. Verify the account’s state
In Active Directory, confirm that the account is enabled, not locked out, not expired, and using a current password. Then check the specific restrictions indicated by Event 4625:
- For
0xC000006F, review allowed logon hours. - For
0xC0000070, review the account’s Log On To workstation list and make sure the target computer is included. - For
0xC0000072, enable the account only after confirming that doing so complies with your organization’s access policy. - For
0xC0000071, change the password through the approved domain process and update any services, tasks, or saved connections that use it. - For
0xC0000193, correct the account expiration date or use a different authorized account.
If several users fail at once, do not reset each password first. A shared policy, domain-controller connection, time source, or DNS problem is more likely.
2. Check user-right assignments and Group Policy
A valid account can still be denied because the computer does not grant the requested logon right. Review the local security policy and the domain Group Policy objects that apply to the computer. Compare the account’s group membership with the Allow and Deny assignments for the logon type shown in Event 4625.
Pay particular attention to conflicts: a user may be included in both an allow and a deny assignment, or a domain policy may override a local setting. For Remote Desktop, verify that the account is permitted to log on through Remote Desktop Services. For a service, scheduled task, or network access, inspect the corresponding service, batch-job, or network-logon right instead of changing interactive-logon settings.
3. If the failure happened during a domain join
Open the client-side domain-join log at %windir%debugNetSetup.log. Confirm that the supplied account is the intended domain identity and that it can create or reuse the computer object in the target organizational unit.

Also check the default quota for nonadministrator users. A nonadministrator account normally has a quota of 10 domain joins. Reaching that limit can block another join even when the credentials are correct. An administrator can delegate the required permission or remove stale computer objects according to organizational policy.
4. Repair DNS, connectivity, and time
A domain logon depends on locating and communicating with a domain controller. Verify that the client uses the organization’s DNS servers and can resolve the domain and domain-controller records. A client pointed only at a public DNS service may have internet access while still being unable to locate the domain controller.
Confirm network reachability to the appropriate domain controller and required services. Then check the Windows Time service and clock synchronization on the client and domain controllers. Kerberos authentication is sensitive to clock differences; an unsynchronized clock can turn otherwise valid credentials into a failed domain logon.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After correcting DNS or time, retry the same operation and inspect a new Event 4625 record. Do not rely on an old event to judge whether the current settings worked.
5. Test and repair the computer’s secure channel
If the computer account password in Active Directory no longer matches the password held by the client, the domain trust or secure channel can fail. First restore network connectivity and make sure the client can reach a domain controller. Then, from an elevated Command Prompt, run:
Nltest.exe /sc_change_pwd:<DomainName>
Replace <DomainName> with the actual domain name. Restart the computer after the password-change operation and test the domain logon again. If the channel cannot be repaired, a domain administrator may need to reset the computer account or remove and rejoin the computer under the organization’s change procedure. Preserve the Event 4625 and NetSetup evidence for whoever administers the domain.

Fixes for a standalone Windows 10 or 11 PC
On a home or workgroup computer, there may be no domain controller. Use the Event 4625 account and substatus to determine whether a local account is disabled, expired, restricted, or denied a local logon right.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Check the local account
Sign in with another administrator account and inspect the affected account in Computer Management → Local Users and Groups → Users, when that console is available in your Windows edition. Confirm that the account is enabled and that its password is current. Review local security policy if the substatus points to a denied logon right or an account restriction.
Do not repeatedly guess passwords. Repeated attempts can trigger account lockout policies and make the original event harder to interpret. If the account is managed by a work or school organization, ask that administrator to verify the restriction instead of bypassing it.
Try Safe Mode to separate startup interference
Restart Windows and test the original profile in Safe Mode. Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and startup components. If the account works there but not during a normal boot, examine recently installed security software, credential providers, startup applications, or policy changes.
Microsoft advises checking antivirus interference when sign-in fails. Temporarily isolate the suspected component only through its supported troubleshooting procedure, keep protection disabled for the shortest practical time, and restore normal protection immediately after the test. A successful Safe Mode sign-in does not prove that the security software is defective; it only identifies a normal-startup difference worth investigating.
Recommended Free Tools
Repair a damaged or temporary profile
If Windows signs you into a temporary profile, reports that it cannot load the profile, or loses profile data after each restart, protect any work created in that temporary session before signing out. A temporary profile is not a safe location for documents you need to keep.
Best Value
Create a new local administrator account, sign in to it, and move the affected user’s documents and other required data from the old profile after checking permissions. Re-create application settings as needed. Keep the original profile until you have verified that the important files, browser data, and application licenses or configuration have been preserved.
Review the built-in logon troubleshooter
Windows includes a recommended logon troubleshooter for some corrupted or missing resource-file conditions. It runs automatically when its detection conditions are met rather than appearing as a universal manual wizard. In Windows 10 and Windows 11, review the troubleshooter history in the system’s recommended-troubleshooting area to see whether it ran and what action it took.
When the error appears outside a normal sign-in
Remote Desktop
For an RDP attempt, compare the client account, the target computer, and the Event 4625 logon type. Confirm that the account is allowed to use Remote Desktop on the target and is not denied by a local or domain policy. Check workstation restrictions and authorized hours as well. A successful console sign-in on another computer does not prove that RDP is permitted.
Services and scheduled tasks
If Event 4625 repeats while nobody is trying to sign in, inspect services and scheduled tasks that run under the named account. Update stored credentials after a password change, or replace the account with an approved service identity. The process name and repetition interval in Event 4625 can help identify which job is responsible.
Network shares and mapped drives
For a network logon, identify the source workstation and resource shown in the event. Remove obsolete saved credentials or mappings through the organization’s approved process, then reconnect with an account that has the required network rights. Do not infer an attack from a single network failure; investigate repeated attempts from an unexpected source address or workstation.
Use the scope of the failure to choose the next test
| Observed scope | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| Only one account fails on one computer | That account’s enabled, expired, locked, hours, workstation, and local-right settings. |
| One account fails only through RDP, a service, or a task | The Event 4625 logon type and the matching allow/deny user right. |
| Many domain users fail on one computer | DNS, time synchronization, domain-controller reachability, policy application, and the secure channel. |
| Many computers fail to authenticate to the domain | Domain-controller health, DNS, time, network paths, and recent Group Policy changes. |
| Failures repeat when no person is signing in | The event’s process, source workstation, and account usage in services or scheduled tasks. |
Common wrong turns
Assuming it is simply a bad password
Wrong-password conditions normally produce different status or substatus values, such as 0xC000006A or 0xC000006D. For 0xC000006E, verify the restriction first. Resetting a password cannot correct a disabled account, an unauthorized workstation, an expired account, or a missing logon right.
Calling one event proof of malware
Event 4625 records a failed authentication attempt; it does not identify the cause as malicious. Correlate the account, process, logon type, workstation, source address, and frequency. Investigate further when the pattern is unexpected, but do not label the computer compromised solely because this event exists.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Running a registry cleaner or generic optimizer
The documented remedies concern account state, policy, DNS, time, domain-controller access, secure-channel trust, or profile integrity. A registry cleaner does not change the status definition or grant a missing user right. Focus on the evidence in Event 4625 and the appropriate Windows or directory-management control.
Quick Recap
After making a change: verify the result
- Repeat the exact operation that failed: console sign-in, RDP, network access, service start, scheduled task, or domain join.
- Open the newest Event 4625 record if it still fails and compare its substatus with the original.
- Confirm that the account, workstation, logon type, process, and source address now match the intended operation.
- If the error changes to a different status, follow that new status rather than continuing to apply the old fix.
- Document the successful policy, account, DNS, time, or secure-channel change so the same restriction can be diagnosed quickly if it returns.
