Error 0xBE5 does not have one universal Windows meaning. A blue screen may actually be Microsoft’s documented bug check 0xBE, which means a driver attempted to write to read-only memory. The literal 0xBE5 can also be an application-specific value, including a legacy DAO message about an Access database file already being in use.

Capture the complete message, the application name, and whether Windows crashed before choosing a fix. Then follow the branch below that matches what you saw.

What error 0xBE5 can mean

The characters after the 0x are hexadecimal digits. A single extra digit can change which component produced the value, so treating every 0xBE5 report as the same Windows failure can send you toward the wrong remedy. Microsoft documents 0x000000BE, not 0xBE5, as the ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY bug check. It is issued when a driver attempts to write to a read-only memory segment.

The same-looking value may be emitted by software that has its own error numbering. A historical DAO/Crystal Reports support result used dao error code: 0xbe5 when an Access .mdb file was already in use. That does not establish a general Windows definition for the value.

Where you saw it What is established First troubleshooting direction
Blue screen or stop screen Check whether the displayed value is really 0xBE. Microsoft associates that bug check with a driver writing to read-only memory. Record the named driver, preserve the dump, update or roll back the affected driver, and test in Safe Mode.
Outlook or Excel freeze/startup failure The surrounding Office failure may involve an add-in, Office installation, data file, antivirus interaction, or profile. There is no confirmed universal Office-specific 0xBE5 fix. Use Office safe mode, isolate add-ins, update or repair Office, and check the relevant data file or profile.
Database or reporting program The legacy DAO example describes an .mdb file already open elsewhere. Close competing processes, verify file access and credentials, and retry the report.
Another application or device utility The application’s own documentation is needed; the hexadecimal value alone is insufficient. Save the complete text and identify the program before changing Windows settings.

Before changing anything: capture the evidence

Write down or photograph the complete message while it is visible. Include every digit, any prefix such as 0x800..., the stop-code wording, and the name of the application or driver. Note whether the event was a restart, a freeze, a dialog box, or a report-generation failure.

Record what changed immediately beforehand. Useful details include a Windows update, a device-driver update, newly installed hardware, an Office update, a new Outlook or Excel add-in, a changed database location, or a security product change. Also note whether the problem occurs once or on every launch, and whether other applications fail at the same time.

  • One application only: stay in that application’s troubleshooting branch first.
  • Repeated system restarts or a blue screen: use the Windows stop-screen branch and preserve crash evidence.
  • One database or report file: check file locks and access rights before repairing Windows.
  • Several unrelated applications: prioritize Windows updates, recent driver changes, and Safe Mode isolation.

Step 1: verify whether the stop code is 0xBE

If the message came from a blue screen, compare the displayed value character by character. Microsoft’s documented bug check is 0x000000BE, also shown in shortened form as 0xBE. A screen that appears to show 0xBE5 may have included another value elsewhere, may have been read incorrectly during an automatic restart, or may have come from software running after the crash.

When Windows identifies a likely driver, its name can appear on the blue screen and is retained in memory for analysis. Treat that name as a lead, not proof: the driver may be the component that exposed the memory violation rather than the only possible cause. Preserve the exact stop text and any available minidump before deleting temporary files or using cleanup utilities.

Step 2: decode the hexadecimal value

Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool can translate many Windows error codes. Version 6.4.5 was published on July 15, 2024. After downloading that utility from Microsoft, open Command Prompt, change to the folder containing it, and run:

Err_6.4.5.exe <error code>

Replace <error code> with the value you recorded. The tool is a decoder, not a repair program, and it will not turn an application’s private error numbering into a supported Windows diagnosis. If it returns no useful description, keep the application name and full message as the primary evidence.

Use the tool only after preserving the original text. Try the value exactly as displayed, then the shortened Windows form if the message clearly came from a stop screen. Do not remove digits simply to obtain a familiar description. A result for 0xBE explains Microsoft’s bug-check terminology, but it does not prove that a database or Office dialog originated in the Windows kernel.

How to choose the correct troubleshooting branch

Four comparisons usually identify the right path: context, scope, timing, and evidence. Context means whether the value appeared before Windows restarted, inside an Office window, during report generation, or in a device utility. Scope asks whether only one file or program fails, or whether the entire computer becomes unstable. Timing connects the first failure with a recent update, driver, add-in, hardware installation, or file move. Evidence includes a named driver, a dump file, a complete application message, or a recognizable file-lock condition.

For example, a single report that fails while every other program works is more consistent with a file-use or permission issue than with a system-wide memory violation. Conversely, repeated restarts in several applications justify prioritizing Windows updates, driver isolation, and Safe Mode. An Office freeze that disappears with outlook.exe /safe or excel.exe /safe points toward an add-in or startup customization, while a failure that remains in safe mode calls for repair and data-file checks.

These comparisons prevent a common mistake: applying a driver package to an application-only problem, or repairing Office when Windows is repeatedly crashing. Change one variable at a time and write down the result. That creates a usable timeline for a vendor if the first-line steps do not resolve the failure.

If 0xBE5 appeared on a Windows blue screen

Install current Windows updates

Save your work, connect the affected computer to reliable power, and install pending updates. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then select Check for updates. Restart when requested and observe whether the same stop screen returns.

Do not install a random driver package merely because its version number is newer. For a device implicated by the crash, use the current driver supplied for that hardware and Windows edition by the device manufacturer or the computer maker.

Roll back a driver that preceded the crash

If the first crash followed a driver update, revert that specific change rather than changing several drivers at once:

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand the category for the suspected device, such as display adapters, network adapters, storage controllers, or audio inputs and outputs.
  3. Right-click the device, choose Properties, and open the Driver tab.
  4. If Roll Back Driver is available, select it, choose a reason, and restart.

If rollback is unavailable, use the recovery option for the recent driver update or uninstall that recent driver from the same properties or device-management workflow, then restart and install a known-good package from the hardware manufacturer. Change one device at a time so you can identify which change affected the result.

Test in Windows Safe Mode

Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and startup components. If the crash disappears there, a third-party driver or startup component becomes more likely; Safe Mode does not prove which one is responsible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery in Windows 10.
  2. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  4. At the list of startup choices, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking when network access is necessary.

Use the computer long enough to reproduce the activity that normally triggers the stop screen. If it remains stable, re-enable or reinstall recently changed drivers and startup components one at a time, restarting between changes. If the crash happens even in Safe Mode, third-party startup software is less likely and the preserved dump, Windows recovery options, or vendor support become more important.

Preserve dump and driver details

Keep the minidump files, the exact stop-screen text, the implicated driver name, driver versions, and your recent-change timeline. Do not delete the evidence while attempting cleanup. A hardware or software vendor can use those details to distinguish a driver regression from a broader Windows problem.

If Outlook or Excel freezes or fails at startup

An Office application that hangs while showing 0xBE5 needs Office-specific isolation. The procedures below address common freeze and startup causes; they do not establish that Office itself assigns a universal meaning to this value.

Start the application in safe mode

Close the affected Office program. Open the Windows Run dialog with Windows key + R, then enter the safe-mode switch for the application:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • outlook.exe /safe for Outlook.
  • excel.exe /safe for Excel.

If the program opens in safe mode, an add-in or customized startup component is a leading suspect. If it still fails, continue with Office repair and data-file or profile checks rather than repeatedly reinstalling add-ins.

Disable the add-in that triggers the failure

In the safe-mode session, open the program’s add-in management screen. For Outlook, use File > Options > Add-ins; for Excel, use File > Options > Add-ins. At the bottom, set Manage to the relevant add-in type, select Go, and clear the check box for recently installed or recently updated add-ins. Restart normally and test. Re-enable items one at a time only after the application is stable.

Update and repair Office

With another Office program open, select File > Account > Update Options > Update Now, when that menu is available. To repair the installation in Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10. Select Microsoft 365 or the installed Office edition, choose Modify, and run the available repair option. Start with the less disruptive repair; use the more comprehensive online repair only when necessary and when you can allow the installation to download files again.

Check data files, security software, and profiles

Outlook may hang because of a damaged or inaccessible data file, a profile problem, or an interaction with antivirus scanning. Confirm that the mailbox or data file is available, has not moved to an unavailable drive, and is not being opened by another process. If a security product was updated immediately before the freeze, consult its documented Office-exclusion and compatibility guidance rather than disabling protection indefinitely. Creating a fresh Office or Outlook profile can separate a profile-specific failure from a system-wide one; preserve the existing profile until you know the new one works.

If a database or reporting program shows dao error code: 0xbe5

The legacy DAO example is narrower than a Windows stop error: an Access .mdb file was already in use. Close Microsoft Access, the reporting program, preview windows, scripts, and background jobs that might have the file open. On a shared location, ask other users to close the database and verify that no process still holds a lock.

  1. Confirm the database path points to the intended .mdb file, not a stale copy or disconnected network location.
  2. Close every report, preview, and Access session that could be using that file.
  3. Wait briefly for a lock file or background process to release the database, then retry.
  4. Verify that the account running the report has permission to open the file and its folder.
  5. If the report still fails, copy the complete DAO or reporting message and the application version to the software vendor.

Do not apply blue-screen driver changes merely because the digits look similar. This application-specific branch concerns file usage and access, not a demonstrated memory-write violation.

Question If yes Next action
Did Windows restart or display a stop screen? Investigate the documented 0xBE bug check and any named driver. Preserve the dump, update or roll back the driver, and test in Safe Mode.
Does only Outlook or Excel hang? The failure is probably scoped to Office, an add-in, a data file, or a profile. Use the application’s safe mode, disable add-ins, update, and repair Office.
Does a report fail only when one .mdb file is involved? The legacy DAO interpretation may apply. Close competing processes and verify the file path and permissions.
Is the complete text unavailable? No interpretation is reliable yet. Reproduce the event if safe, capture the message, and note the application and recent changes.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the final digit is harmless: 0xBE and 0xBE5 should not be treated as interchangeable.
  • Changing several drivers together: that removes the timing evidence needed to identify a regression.
  • Using a generic driver-download site: an unrelated package can introduce another failure and make rollback harder.
  • Deleting dumps or temporary evidence: the named driver and minidump may be the most useful clues available.
  • Disabling antivirus indefinitely: use the security vendor’s compatibility guidance and restore protection after a controlled test.
  • Repairing Windows for a locked database: first confirm that another user, preview window, script, or background job is not holding the .mdb file.
  • Calling a decoder a repair utility: Error Lookup explains many codes but does not fix the component that generated them.

When the problem continues

Stop making unrelated changes once you have completed the matching branch. Record which step changed the behavior, whether the failure is reproducible, and whether it affects one user account, one file, one device, or the whole computer.

Escalate with the exact error text, any named driver, minidumps, driver versions, Windows edition and build, Office edition when relevant, application version, file location, and recent-change history. Give that package to the hardware or software vendor responsible for the failing component. Avoid registry edits and driver-download sites that are not tied to the device manufacturer; an incorrect package can make diagnosis harder.

There is no supported, universal “0xBE5 fix.” The reliable path is to identify whether the value came from Windows, Office, a database/reporting program, or another application, then use the evidence for that component.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review settings, and provide an app-crash log; it complements antivirus software and does not replace it. It offers a free trial by category for at least two days, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does error 0xBE5 mean?

It depends on where it appeared. Microsoft documents 0xBE as ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY, caused when a driver writes to a read-only memory segment. A literal 0xBE5 can instead be an application-specific value, such as the legacy DAO message for an Access .mdb file already in use.

How do I fix 0xBE5 on Windows 10 or Windows 11?

First capture the complete message and determine whether it was a blue screen. For a stop-screen event, install current Windows and manufacturer drivers, roll back a driver that immediately preceded the crash, test in Safe Mode, and preserve any minidump. Do not apply these steps to an Office or database dialog without confirming the context.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Is 0xBE5 a blue-screen driver error?

Not necessarily. The documented Microsoft blue-screen code is 0xBE, not 0xBE5. A screen that appears to show the longer value may have been misread or may include a separate value, so verify every digit and the surrounding stop text.

Why does my Office app show 0xBE5?

The value may accompany an Office freeze or startup failure without being a confirmed Office-wide code. Start Outlook or Excel with its safe-mode switch, disable recently added add-ins, update Office, run the appropriate repair, and check data files, profiles, and security-software interactions.

How do I decode a hexadecimal Windows error code?

Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool version 6.4.5, published July 15, 2024, translates many Windows codes. Run Err_6.4.5.exe <error code> from Command Prompt after downloading it from Microsoft. The result is descriptive, not a repair, and may not recognize private application codes.

What should I do if a DAO or Crystal Reports program reports 0xbe5?

Treat it as an application-specific file-use condition. Close Access, report previews, scripts, and background jobs; ask other users to close the shared database; confirm the intended .mdb path; wait for locks to clear; and verify folder and file permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I edit the registry or buy a repair product for 0xBE5?

No universal registry edit or physical product is supported for this ambiguous value. Identify the source first, use the matching Windows, Office, or database procedure, and avoid unrelated hardware or driver-download recommendations.

What evidence should I give technical support?

Provide the exact message, the application or named driver, Windows and Office versions when relevant, driver versions, minidumps from a blue-screen event, the affected file path, and a timeline of updates, hardware, add-ins, or other changes.

The Bottom Line

There is no single 0xBE5 repair. Verify the full code and source first: investigate driver memory access when the event is a Windows stop screen, isolate add-ins and repair Office when Outlook or Excel hangs, and resolve file locks and permissions when a DAO report names an .mdb file.
