Error 0x81000302 is not a standard Windows 10 or Windows 11 recovery code. Exact-code reports most often come from LGUP, LG’s phone-firmware flashing utility, where the message usually means that the required model DLL is missing or does not match the phone’s firmware protocol. If the code appeared in a Windows recovery screen or another application, verify that context first rather than copying an LGUP fix.
Use the manual procedure that matches what you were doing: correct the LGUP model DLL when an LG phone is being flashed, or follow Windows’ least-disruptive recovery sequence when a Windows installation is failing. Back up important files before using any recovery option that could change the system.

What error 0x81000302 means
Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 recovery documentation does not define 0x81000302 as a built-in Windows recovery code. Code-specific reports instead associate it with LGUP. Two message variants are commonly described:

- “0x81000302, Please use latest DLL” — LGUP cannot find the model DLL it needs, or the installed DLL is not the current one for the phone.
- “LAF Protocol version is not match DLL” — the DLL and the phone’s LAF (LG Advanced Flash) protocol or firmware combination are incompatible.
The digits alone are not enough to select a remedy. The application name, complete text, phone model, carrier or regional firmware, and the point at which the error appears all matter. The code is an error identifier, not proof of malware or a hardware failure.

Identify the context before changing anything
When LGUP is open
If the window title or surrounding instructions mention LGUP, a phone, Download mode, LAF, or a DLL, treat this as an LG firmware-tool problem. Windows recovery options will not supply the model-specific DLL that LGUP is requesting.
When the message appears outside LGUP
Record the application name and the entire message, including any file name or path. A third-party program can use a code that resembles an LGUP error, while a Windows recovery screen may show a different code with similar digits. Do not place an LG DLL into a Windows system folder unless the application’s own documentation specifically requires it.
Information to note before attempting a fix
- Windows edition and version, if the problem is on the PC itself.
- The exact LG phone model and, where relevant, carrier or regional variant.
- The firmware package you intended to flash and whether it is for that exact model.
- The complete error wording and whether Windows still starts normally.
- Any update, driver, firmware, or software change immediately before the failure.
Fixing 0x81000302 in LGUP
These steps apply only when LGUP is the application reporting the code. The objective is to make the model DLL and the phone firmware agree; replacing random files or repeatedly retrying a flash can make recovery harder.

- Stop the flash and identify the model. Close the operation without disconnecting the phone in the middle of a write. Read the model from the handset label, Download-mode screen, or the original documentation. Do not rely only on a similar retail name; regional and carrier variants can use different firmware packages.
- Capture the full LGUP message. “Please use latest DLL” points to a missing or outdated model DLL. “LAF Protocol version is not match DLL” points to an incompatibility between the DLL and the phone’s protocol or firmware.
- Obtain the latest DLL for that exact model. Use the model-specific package supplied with the LGUP setup or an official, authorized LG firmware source. The DLL must correspond to the phone model and the firmware family you intend to use. A DLL for a visually similar model is not a safe substitute.
- Place the DLL in LGUP’s common model directory. On a typical 64-bit Windows installation, the documented location is
C:Program Files (x86)LG ElectronicsLGUPmodelcommon. If thecommonfolder is missing, verify that LGUP is installed in that parent directory before creating or selecting a folder. Do not copy the file intoSystem32, the Windows directory, or an unrelated application folder. - Restart LGUP. Close every LGUP window, reopen it, reconnect the phone in the required mode, and check whether the model is recognized. If Windows reports that the file is blocked or corrupted, stop and obtain a clean, model-matched package rather than bypassing the warning.
- Verify the firmware and protocol together. If the LAF mismatch remains, the DLL may be current but still wrong for the firmware or regional variant. Select a firmware package explicitly intended for the phone’s exact model and carrier or region, then retry only after confirming that the DLL and package belong to the same device family.
- Preserve a recovery route. Keep the original firmware package, model information, and any backups available. If LGUP still refuses the device after a correct DLL and firmware pairing, stop repeated attempts and use the device manufacturer’s service or recovery procedure; the code-specific reports do not establish a universal DLL that works for every LG model.
LGUP pitfalls
- Downloading a generic “latest DLL.” “Latest” means latest for the model and compatible firmware, not simply the newest file found for another handset.
- Mixing carrier or regional files. A package intended for another market can produce a protocol mismatch even when the model name looks close.
- Using an old DLL copied from another computer. The file may belong to a different LGUP release or phone family.
- Disconnecting during a write. The error itself is a compatibility signal; forcing the process can create a separate firmware-recovery problem.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 recovery sequence
If the code appears during a Windows problem rather than in LGUP, use Microsoft’s recovery choices from least disruptive to most disruptive. Start with option 1 — it is the least disruptive. Back up documents and other important files before proceeding, because later recovery choices can remove data or applications.
1. Run the built-in troubleshooter
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Run the troubleshooter that matches the symptom, such as the one for the affected component. Follow its proposed repair and restart if requested. Windows 10 exposes troubleshooters from its Settings troubleshooting pages; use the troubleshooter that corresponds to the failure rather than running unrelated ones.
This step is appropriate when Windows still boots and the problem is limited to a feature, device, or application. It changes fewer system components than a reset or reinstall, so it is the correct first test even when the code itself is not documented as a Windows code.

2. Uninstall a recent Windows update
If the failure began immediately after Windows Update, remove the most recent applicable update from the Windows Update history. In Windows 11, use Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates; Windows 10 presents the equivalent option from its Windows Update history page. Select the update associated with the beginning of the problem and restart.

It is not the right choice when the failure predates the update or when the update is required to correct a security issue; in that case, continue with another recovery path after documenting the symptom.
3. Use System Restore
System Restore is useful when a restore point exists from before the failure. Microsoft describes it this way: “It rolls back system files and settings (but not personal files) and is available on both Windows 10 and Windows 11.” Choose a restore point dated before the first appearance of the problem, review the affected programs if Windows shows that list, and allow the process to complete without powering off the computer.

When Windows will not start, enter Windows Recovery Environment and select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. Choose the earlier restore point and sign in with an account when prompted. System Restore changes system files and settings; it is not a replacement for backing up personal data.
4. Use “Fix problems using Windows Update” when offered
Supported Windows 11 versions may show a Fix problems using Windows Update reinstall option. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving personal files, installed apps, and settings when the option is available. Keep the computer connected to power and allow the process to finish. If the option is absent, do not assume that a manual installation-media reinstall will preserve the same items; use the next recovery choice only after reviewing its data impact.

5. Reset this PC
Reset this PC is a larger change than System Restore or an update rollback. Windows offers a choice to keep personal files or remove everything. “Keep my files” still removes applications and resets system settings, so make a list of programs, activation information, and configuration details before starting. “Remove everything” erases personal data as well as apps and settings and should be considered only after a verified backup.
6. Reinstall with installation media
An installation-media reinstall is the most disruptive option in this sequence. It can remove personal files, applications, and settings depending on the installation path you choose. Create or obtain the media for the correct Windows edition, back up data, and record any device-specific drivers or recovery information first. Microsoft’s guidance also recommends manufacturer recovery media when hardware-specific drivers are important.

If Windows will not start
Do not jump straight to a destructive reset merely because the desktop is unavailable. From Windows Recovery Environment, try Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore when a suitable restore point exists. If the problem followed an update, use the recovery option to uninstall that update. Only after those choices fail should you evaluate Reset this PC or installation media, with the backup and driver considerations described above.
A phone-related 0x81000302 shown by LGUP is a separate case: Windows Recovery Environment cannot correct a phone-model DLL mismatch. Return to the LGUP procedure and verify the model, firmware family, and DLL together.

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides the normal free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes covered by Windows 10 support. A recovery operation can repair an existing installation, but it does not restore the ended support lifecycle. If you remain on Windows 10, plan separately for a supported operating-system path that fits your hardware and software requirements.
What not to do
- Do not treat 0x81000302 as a universal Windows code when the message actually comes from LGUP.
- Do not download a DLL solely because its file name contains your phone’s commercial name.
- Do not copy an LGUP DLL into Windows system directories.
- Do not repeatedly flash after an LAF mismatch without confirming the exact model, carrier or region, firmware package, and DLL.
- Do not reset or reinstall Windows before backing up important files and recording applications or hardware-specific drivers.
- Do not assume that a successful Windows repair will fix an LG phone’s firmware state, or that replacing an LGUP DLL will repair a Windows startup problem.
When the error remains
If the message is in LGUP and a model-matched DLL in the documented LGUPmodelcommon directory still produces an LAF mismatch, preserve the exact error text and firmware details and contact the device manufacturer or an authorized service channel. If the message is in Windows, note which recovery option completed, whether Windows boots, and whether the failure returns before escalating. That record prevents a repair technician from repeating a destructive step without knowing what has already changed.
