Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Error 0x80080005 on Windows 7 is normally a Windows Update failure. Microsoft associates the code with corrupted files, permission problems, or an incorrect system configuration. The title is often written as “0X8008005,” but the documented code has a leading zero after the x: 0x80080005.
Confirm the exact code and the wording around it before changing anything. If the message concerns installing an update, use the Windows Update procedure below. If it mentions a product key, licensing, activation, or Windows not being genuine, use Microsoft’s separate Windows 7 activation guidance instead; activation and update failures are different troubleshooting paths.

First, identify which problem you actually have
A single missing zero can send you to the wrong instructions. Open the original error dialog or Windows Update history and check every character. Microsoft documents 0x80080005, not the shortened 0X8008005 spelling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| What you see | Correct path | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The code appears while Windows Update searches for, downloads, or installs updates. | Follow the Windows Update steps in this article. | Microsoft lists 0x80080005 in its Windows Update troubleshooting material. |
| The message refers to activation, a product key, licensing, or Windows being genuine. | Stop the update procedure and open Microsoft’s dedicated Windows 7 activation instructions. | Activation errors use a separate support path and may not be repaired by Windows Update commands. |
| The code is different, or the dialog does not identify Windows Update or activation. | Record the complete message before proceeding. | A similar-looking code can require a different remedy. |
The code itself is a diagnostic value, not proof that the computer is infected. It tells you that Windows encountered a file, permission, or configuration problem in the documented update context. The exact cause on an individual installation cannot be determined from the code alone.

- Perfect for installs that are corrupted or full of viruses. Works on any make or model computer.Repair boot manager is missing, NTLDR is missing, Blue Screens of Death (BSOD) and more. This item does not include a key code or a license. You must have your own key code to use the install option otherwise you will get a non-genuine message.
Before you start
- Save open documents and close programs that are installing software or changing system files.
- Sign in with an account that can approve administrator actions. Windows will display a User Account Control prompt when an elevated tool is opened.
- Write down the full error text, when it appears, and whether the failure occurs during the search, download, or installation phase. This information helps distinguish an update problem from activation.
- Do not begin with random registry edits, “fix” downloads, or replacement system files. Microsoft’s first-line guidance for this code is the built-in System File Checker followed by the Windows Update troubleshooter.
Fix 0x80080005 with System File Checker
System File Checker (SFC) checks protected Windows system files and attempts to repair files that are damaged or inconsistent. Microsoft’s documented first repair step is to run sfc /scannow from an administrator Command Prompt.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Click the Windows 7 Start button.
- Type
cmdin the search box. - In the results, right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt. The window title should indicate that it has administrator privileges.
If Run as administrator is missing, you are either not selecting the Command Prompt result or the account cannot elevate. Sign in with an administrator account or ask the computer’s administrator to perform the scan. Running the command in an ordinary Command Prompt may not give SFC the access it needs.
Run the scan
- At the elevated prompt, type
sfc /scannow, including the space betweensfcand/scannow. - Press Enter.
- Leave the window open while the verification reaches completion. Do not shut down the computer because the percentage appears to pause.
The scan can take time, especially on an older Windows 7 disk. Avoid starting another repair utility simultaneously. When SFC finishes, read the result instead of closing the window immediately. The result tells you whether Windows found no integrity problem, repaired files, or could not repair everything it found.

- No integrity problem reported: the protected files SFC checked were not identified as corrupted. Continue with the Windows Update troubleshooter; the code can also involve permissions or configuration.
- Corrupted files repaired: restart Windows so repaired components are loaded, then run the Windows Update troubleshooter and retry the update.
- Some files could not be repaired: copy or photograph the final result, restart, and run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Do not download replacement DLL files from an unknown site or edit the registry merely because SFC reported an unresolved file.
SFC is a repair attempt, not a guarantee that every update failure will disappear. A clean scan does not rule out a permissions or configuration issue, and an unsuccessful repair result does not identify the exact update package that failed.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows 7 includes a Windows Update troubleshooter. Microsoft lists it as the other first-line action for 0x80080005. It checks common update-related conditions and offers repairs when it finds a condition it can address.
Open the troubleshooter
- Open Control Panel from the Start menu.
- Open the troubleshooting area and choose the option for fixing problems with Windows Update. The wording can vary slightly with Control Panel view and installed updates.
- Allow the diagnostic tool to complete its checks.
- Apply each repair it reports, noting whether a check was fixed, skipped, or could not be completed.
If you cannot find the shortcut, use the Control Panel search box for Windows Update troubleshooting. Select the Microsoft Windows Update troubleshooter rather than a download offered by a third-party website.
Restart and test
- Close the troubleshooter and restart Windows 7, even if it did not report a repair.
- After signing in, open Windows Update and select Check for updates or retry the failed installation.
- Watch for the same code and record the update name or number if the attempt fails again.
Restarting matters because SFC repairs and troubleshooter changes may not be active until Windows reloads. Retrying immediately in the same session can make it unclear whether the repair was applied.

If the update still fails
When 0x80080005 remains after both first-line steps, keep the evidence you collected rather than repeating unrelated fixes. The documented causes are broad—corrupted files, permissions, and incorrect configuration—so the next useful distinction is what each tool reported.

SFC found and repaired files, but the update still fails
Confirm that you restarted after the scan, then run the Windows Update troubleshooter and apply its repairs. If the code returns, record the exact update and the troubleshooter’s final status. A persistent failure after a successful file repair suggests that the update environment or permissions may still need attention, but the code alone does not justify a particular registry change.
SFC found no problem, but the update still fails
Proceed with the troubleshooter and restart. A clean SFC result only covers the protected files it examined; Microsoft also associates this code with permissions and configuration. Check that you launched the troubleshooter for Windows Update, not a generic maintenance wizard, and preserve the exact message if it fails again.
The troubleshooter reports a repair it could not complete
Note the name of the failed check and whether Windows requested a restart. Restart once, retry Windows Update, and keep the result for the next support interaction. Avoid stacking registry cleaners or manually replacing system components, because those actions can change the configuration without addressing the condition the troubleshooter identified.

Stop treating it as an update failure. If the wording mentions a product key, activation, licensing, or genuine Windows, use Microsoft’s Windows 7 activation guidance. Do not assume that rerunning SFC or the Windows Update troubleshooter will activate Windows; Microsoft directs Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users to dedicated activation instructions for that branch.

| What should you avoid? | Unverified registry edits or replacement DLL downloads presented as universal fixes. | Assuming an update repair will resolve licensing or product-key problems. |
Common mistakes that prevent a fix
Using the shortened code as a search term
The shortened spelling 0X8008005 omits a zero. Always compare the dialog with the documented form 0x80080005. If the characters differ, stop and identify the actual code before applying these steps.
Running SFC without elevation
SFC should be launched from Command Prompt opened with Run as administrator. Merely opening cmd from the Start menu is not the same as opening an elevated prompt.
Closing SFC because progress appears slow
Verification can pause while Windows examines files. Interrupting it leaves the repair incomplete. Let it reach a final result, then restart if it reports repairs.

Skipping the restart
A restart loads repaired system components and applies changes made by the troubleshooter. Always restart before the next update attempt.

Confusing activation with updating
Words such as “product key,” “license,” “activation,” and “genuine” indicate a different support route. The Windows Update code and the activation message may look similar but are not interchangeable problems.
Installing an unofficial “fix”
Microsoft’s documented first-line procedure does not require a generic recovery DVD, registry script, DLL download, or third-party command sequence. Such downloads can introduce a second problem and make the original configuration harder to diagnose.
What to record if you need further support
If the two Microsoft first-line actions do not resolve the issue, prepare a concise record:
- The exact code, including every zero, and the complete dialog wording.
- Whether the failure occurred during update search, download, or installation.
- The name or identifier of the update that failed.
- The final SFC result and whether Windows was restarted afterward.
- The Windows Update troubleshooter checks that were repaired, skipped, or unsuccessful.
- Whether the message later changed to an activation or licensing notice.
This record separates a reproducible Windows Update failure from an activation problem and prevents repeating steps that have already been completed.
Optional shortcut
As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can attempt repairs for more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, and shared DLL problems, while also offering cleanup and troubleshooting features. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a paid subscription, and it complements an antivirus rather than replacing one. Results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Bottom line
Verify that the code is really 0x80080005 and that the dialog concerns Windows Update. Run elevated sfc /scannow, let it finish, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and retry. If the message is about activation or licensing, leave the update path and follow Microsoft’s separate Windows 7 activation guidance.
