There is no single, confirmed Microsoft definition for 0x8007422. Reports associate the string with Microsoft Store failures (including apps that will not download and Minecraft sign-in problems), while another discussion connects a similar-looking code with Xbox and Windows Update. Start by copying the code exactly and recording your Windows build with winver. Then use the fix for the component that actually displayed it. Do not substitute the documented service fix for 0x80070422; those are different codes.
What 0x8007422 means—and why the exact digits matter
The available Microsoft discussions do not establish a universal definition for 0x8007422. A Microsoft Q&A report dated May 5, 2023 describes the code when Microsoft Store would not open, Store apps would not download, and Minecraft sign-in failed. A separate Q&A thread dated March 8, 2024 discusses an Xbox/Windows Update situation but explains 0x80070422, not 0x8007422. In that second thread, the responder says the error means the Windows Update service is disabled. That explanation must not be applied to 0x8007422 without checking the displayed digits.

Because the same-looking number can be copied incorrectly from a screenshot or dialog, treat the component and the exact string as your diagnosis. A Store symptom calls for a Store-cache reset; a Windows Update symptom calls for Microsoft’s Windows 10 troubleshooter. A service investigation belongs only to the distinct 0x80070422 code.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirst, capture the error and your Windows build
- Copy the complete code. Check every digit, including the zero after the
x. If the message is in a screenshot, zoom in or transcribe it into a note. Record the application or settings page that showed it. - Open the Windows version dialog. Press Win+R, type
winver, and press Enter. - Write down the edition, version and build. Keep this information with the exact message. The Microsoft Q&A response that discusses the Store symptoms specifically asks for this information, and it is essential if you need support later.
- Reproduce the original action once. Note whether the failure is opening Store, downloading an app, signing in to a game or Xbox, or checking for Windows updates. Do not run unrelated registry edits or command files before you have recorded this evidence.
Choose the branch that matches the failing component
| What is failing? | Supported first action | Evidence and risk |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Store will not open, or Store apps will not download | Run wsreset and wait for Store to reopen |
Specific to the May 5, 2023 Microsoft Q&A report; built-in and reversible |
| Windows Update cannot check or install updates | Run the Windows 10 Windows Update troubleshooter | Microsoft-documented procedure; use before broad system changes |
| Xbox or game sign-in fails | Confirm the exact code and identify whether Store or Windows Update is also failing | The available Xbox discussion concerns 0x80070422, so a code check is required |

Fix the Microsoft Store symptoms
Reset the Store cache with wsreset
- Close Microsoft Store and any Store app that is stuck.
- Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
wsresetexactly, then press Enter. - Allow the reset window to finish. It can remain on screen while the cache is cleared; do not close it prematurely.
- Microsoft Store should reopen when the operation completes. Try the same action that produced the error: opening Store, downloading the app, or signing in to the affected game.
This is the context-specific action documented for the Store-related report. It does not prove that every appearance of 0x8007422 is a Store problem. If Store opens but a download still fails, keep the recorded code, build and symptom together rather than switching to a Windows Update service fix automatically.

If the Store reset does not change the symptom
- Verify that the new dialog still shows
0x8007422, not0x80070422or another number. - Repeat the reproduction once and note whether the failure is limited to one app or affects Store itself.
- Preserve the
winverresult and the full wording of the message. The evidence available for this code does not establish a universal second command, registry edit or system-file repair that should be applied blindly.
Fix a Windows Update failure on Windows 10
Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Troubleshoot, then Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply any action the troubleshooter reports, then restart Windows.
- After the restart, return to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
This sequence is the Microsoft-documented Windows 10 procedure. It is the appropriate first step when Windows Update is the surface that fails. It is not evidence that the Store-related report has the same underlying cause.
When an Xbox symptom appears with the update failure
Do not infer the cause from the word “Xbox” alone. First capture the exact code and use winver. If the number is 0x8007422, the available evidence does not define a dedicated Xbox repair. Determine whether Store also fails and use the matching branch above. If the number is 0x80070422, follow the service-check branch below instead.
Do not confuse 0x8007422 with 0x80070422
The strings differ by one digit, but the documented interpretation differs as well:

Microsoft Q&A report involving Store opening, Store downloads and Minecraft sign-in; no confirmed universal definition | Identify the failing component, use wsreset for Store symptoms or the Windows Update troubleshooter for update symptoms |

Separate Microsoft Q&A discussion describing a disabled Windows Update service | Inspect Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer services in services.msc |
If your dialog really says 0x80070422
- Press Win+R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS).
- Check each service’s status and startup setting. The Q&A response identifies a disabled Windows Update service as the cause to investigate and directs readers to these two services.
- Record what you find before changing anything. If you need to change a service, use Microsoft’s instructions for that exact code and Windows edition rather than applying the steps to
0x8007422.
If your original message says 0x8007422, stop after confirming the digits; the disabled-service explanation is not a confirmed definition for that code.

Can System Restore fix 0x8007422?
There is no evidence in the documented discussions that System Restore repairs 0x8007422. The supported actions tied to the observed symptoms are the Store cache reset and the Windows Update troubleshooter, selected according to the failing component. System Restore therefore should not be your first response to this code, especially before you record the build and exact message. If you are considering it because a separate system change caused other problems, preserve the error details first and understand that a restore attempt is not a code-specific fix established by these reports.
What to do when the error remains
Preserve a useful support record
- Exact code, including all digits and capitalization.
- Full text of the dialog or a legible screenshot.
- Windows edition, version and build from
winver. - The failing surface: Store, a particular download, Minecraft or Xbox sign-in, or Windows Update.
- The action you tried and its result, including whether
wsresetor the troubleshooter completed.
Avoid unsupported broad repairs
The available evidence does not justify a universal registry edit, a particular System File Checker command, or a guaranteed system-restore procedure for 0x8007422. Such changes can make diagnosis harder when the original code was mistyped or belonged to another component. Escalate with the record above rather than applying a fix intended for 0x80070422.
Windows 10 lifecycle context
Microsoft states that support for standard Windows 10 Home and Pro editions ended on October 14, 2025. Version 22H2 was the final standard release for those editions. A Windows 10 computer can still display the error after that date, but the operating system is outside standard support. Record the edition and version from winver when seeking help, because lifecycle status and edition affect which assistance and updates are available.

Quick decision checklist
- Exact code first: confirm
0x8007422versus0x80070422. - Build recorded: run
winverand save the edition, version and build. - Store symptom: run
wsreset, wait for Store to reopen, and retry. - Windows Update symptom: use Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter, restart, and check again.
- 0x80070422 only: inspect Windows Update and BITS in
services.msc. - Still unresolved: preserve the code, wording, build, component and attempted steps for support; do not assume System Restore or a registry edit is a confirmed remedy.
