If Windows 10 shows 0x8007422 when Windows Update, Microsoft Store, Xbox, or a game download starts, first verify the characters. Reports to Microsoft Q&A use 0x8007422, but Microsoft documents 0x80070422 for the condition where a required service is disabled or stopped. Microsoft’s wording is: “The service cannot be started because it is disabled.” In practice, check the Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) services before trying more invasive repairs.
The sequence below keeps changes reversible: identify the exact error and Windows build, run Microsoft’s troubleshooter, enable the relevant services, reset update components if necessary, repair system files, and only then use Store-specific recovery steps. Windows 10 reached end of standard support on October 14, 2025, so a successful repair does not restore free security or feature updates that Microsoft no longer provides for the operating system.

What 0x8007422 means
There is no separately documented Microsoft error definition for the exact spelling 0x8007422 in the material available from Microsoft. Microsoft Q&A discussions from 2020 and 2024 show users reporting that string in Microsoft Store, Xbox, game-download, and Windows Update scenarios. In one answer, the responder mapped it to 0x80070422, the documented ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED condition.
That distinction matters. Do not assume every 0x8007422 report has one confirmed root cause. It may be a typing or display variant, a transcription error, or a different message copied incompletely. The most useful working hypothesis is that Windows cannot start a service needed by the operation, especially Windows Update or BITS.

Symptoms that fit the service-disabled interpretation
- Windows Update immediately refuses to check for or install updates.
- Microsoft Store downloads remain pending, fail at the start, or show the code after selecting Get.
- Xbox app or Microsoft game downloads stop before transferring files.
- The Windows Update service is listed as Disabled or is stopped and cannot be started.
- A related message names error 1058, which commonly means a service is disabled.
If your message names a different component, records a different code, or appears during a non-Microsoft installer, follow the wording in that message rather than forcing the 0x80070422 interpretation.
Confirm the code, Windows edition, and affected app
- Copy the complete code and the sentence around it. Distinguish 0x8007422 from 0x80070422; the extra or missing zero changes what can be concluded.
- Press Win+R, type
winver, and press Enter. Record the Windows version and build shown in the dialog. - Note where the failure occurs: Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, Microsoft Store, Xbox, or another application.
- Write down whether the operation fails for every account or only one Windows profile. This helps separate a system-service problem from an app-cache problem.
Keep this information if you need to contact Microsoft or the software or device vendor. It prevents a support technician from treating a Store-only cache failure as a system-wide service failure.
Fast decision guide
| Where the error appears | First action | What the action changes | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then inspect Windows Update and BITS in services.msc. |
Diagnoses and enables the services that download and install updates. | High; service startup settings can be returned to their previous values. |
| Microsoft Store or Xbox download | Check the same services first; use wsreset only after the service check. |
Addresses the underlying transfer service, then clears the Store cache. | High; cache reset does not remove installed apps. |
| Service will not start | Record the exact Windows error, inspect Event Viewer and update logs, and escalate. | Collects evidence instead of making unsupported registry edits. | Highest; no destructive change is made. |
| Corruption remains after service repair | Reset update components and run DISM followed by System File Checker. | Rebuilds update caches and repairs Windows component or system files. | Moderate; back up personal files before repair work. |
Run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter
Use the built-in diagnostic before changing service settings manually. It can identify common configuration and update-database problems and may apply a repair automatically.

- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Troubleshoot, then Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply any recommended fix, restart Windows if requested, and retry the original update.
Microsoft’s current support flow may direct you to the Get Help app instead of, or in addition to, the legacy troubleshooter. Use the path offered by your build. A troubleshooter result is not proof that the underlying service is healthy, so continue to the service check if the code returns.
Enable Windows Update and BITS
The first hands-on check is whether Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) are disabled or stopped. BITS transfers update and Store content in the background; Windows Update coordinates the update process.
- Press Win+R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt if it appears. - Find Windows Update, double-click it, and look at Service status and Startup type.
- If Startup type is Disabled, change it to a non-disabled setting offered by your build, such as Manual or Automatic. Do not choose a setting that your organization’s policy requires you to avoid.
- Select Start. If the service is already running, select Restart when available, then choose Apply and OK.
- Repeat the check for Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Set it to a non-disabled startup type and select Start or Restart.
- Close the Services console, restart the computer, and try Windows Update or the original Store/Xbox download again.
Do not disable these services as a troubleshooting experiment. If a work or school computer resets the setting, a group policy or management product may be enforcing it; contact the administrator rather than repeatedly changing it.
Optional command-line verification
An administrator can confirm the service state without changing it. Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
sc query wuauserv
sc query bits
Look for the service state and any error text. These commands are for observation. Use the Services console for the startup-type change unless a Microsoft support instruction for your build tells you otherwise.
Reset Windows Update components and cache
If both services are enabled but the update database or download cache is damaged, Microsoft’s update-component reset procedure can clear the stale state. This is more invasive than the troubleshooter, so save open work and back up important personal files first. You need an administrator account.
- Open Command Prompt (Admin).
- Stop the services that can hold update files:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
If a service reports that it is not running, note the message and continue. Do not force a service that refuses to stop; restart Windows and try again.
- Rename the update data folders so Windows can create fresh ones. Renaming preserves the old folders for rollback:
ren %windir%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %windir%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
- Start the services again:
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv
- Restart Windows, wait several minutes for the new folders to be created, and test Windows Update.
If a rename says the folder is in use, a service or security product still has a file open. Restart, ensure the three services are stopped, and retry. Do not delete the folders or registry keys blindly. After Windows has completed several successful update cycles, you can remove the .old folders if you need the disk space; keeping them temporarily provides an easier rollback.

Repair Windows component and system files
Service settings can be correct while Windows files remain corrupted. Microsoft commonly recommends Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) and System File Checker (SFC) for this situation. Keep the command window open until each command reports completion.
- Open Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
DISM may appear to pause at a percentage while it works. Let it finish. If it reports that the component store could not be repaired, record the exact message rather than repeating the command indefinitely.
- After DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and retry the update or download.
SFC may report that it found and repaired files, found files it could not repair, or found no integrity violations. The result determines the next support step; it does not specifically prove that 0x8007422 was caused by file corruption.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If Microsoft Store or Xbox is the only affected app
When Windows Update works normally and the code appears only in Microsoft Store or Xbox, treat the app cache as a secondary branch. Keep the service checks above because Store and Xbox downloads still depend on Windows transfer components.
Reset the Microsoft Store cache
- Press Win+R.
- Enter
wsresetand press Enter. - Wait for the blank command window to close and for Microsoft Store to open automatically.
- Sign in if requested and retry the download.
wsreset is a community-suggested Store reset, not a guaranteed repair for this code. It clears the cache; it does not reinstall Windows or repair a disabled service.
Re-register Microsoft Store
Microsoft Q&A discussions also suggest re-registering the Store package with PowerShell when the Store itself is damaged. Use this as a context-dependent step, preferably after creating a restore point and closing Store windows.
- Open Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Run the following command exactly as one line:
Get-AppxPackage -allusers Microsoft.WindowsStore | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"}
- Restart Windows and test the Store. If PowerShell reports a deployment error, save the complete text and seek Microsoft support instead of removing AppX packages manually.
What to do when a service cannot be enabled
If Start is unavailable, the startup type immediately returns to Disabled, or Windows displays an error such as 1058, stop changing settings and capture evidence.
- Record the service name, startup type, exact error number, and the time it occurred.
- Open Event Viewer by pressing Win+R, entering
eventvwr.msc, and reviewing Windows Logs > System around the failure time. - Review Windows Update logs through the troubleshooting tools available on your Windows 10 build. Copy relevant error lines, not only a screenshot of the headline code.
- Check whether security software, privacy hardening, debloat scripts, or organization policy changed service permissions. Undo only a change you can identify and reverse.
- Escalate to Microsoft support, your organization’s administrator, or the computer or software vendor with the build number and captured errors.
Never delete service registry entries or change service dependencies based on an anonymous fix. A wrong dependency edit can prevent Windows from starting or can disable unrelated services.
Windows 10 support status and what the repair can achieve
Microsoft ended standard Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Under the standard support statement, free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended after that date. The steps in this guide can restore a disabled service, repair local files, or make an existing Store download work; they cannot create new security updates or extend Microsoft’s support terms.
After the local repair, check winver again and consider whether the device can move to a supported Windows release. If hardware, licensing, or organizational policy prevents that move, document the limitation and apply your organization’s risk controls rather than treating a repaired 0x8007422 message as proof that the operating system is fully supported.

- The full code and surrounding message were copied, and 0x8007422 was not confused with 0x80070422.
winversupplied the Windows edition and build.- The Windows Update troubleshooter was run from Settings or Get Help.
- Windows Update and BITS are not Disabled and can start.
- The computer was restarted before testing again.
- Update-component reset was attempted only after the basic service check, with personal files backed up.
- DISM and SFC results were recorded if file repair was needed.
wsresetor Store re-registration was used only when Store or Xbox was the affected app.- Unresolved service errors, Event Viewer entries, and update logs were saved for escalation.
As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and offers settings, cleanup, privacy, vulnerability-check, real-time boost, file-shredder, and crash-log features. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 with a free trial by category of at least two days before a paid subscription; it complements antivirus software, results vary, and no utility repairs every crash.
When to stop troubleshooting
If the code returns after the services are enabled, update components are reset, and system files pass repair, the remaining cause may be policy, a damaged user profile, a Store package deployment problem, or an issue specific to the Windows build. At that point, the exact code, app context, service errors, and logs are more valuable than another generic reset. Provide those details to Microsoft, an administrator, or the relevant vendor so the next step targets the actual failure.
